Five-Hundred Word Challenge 113: Mysterious Object and the Expanse Before it

Always at ten and across the green desert lies an object of distinct desirability.

Many people have come and tried to conquer the grand expanse that lies between them and this object, but none have been able to get anything that could be considered far.

No one knows what the object is, but they know that it had not always been there.

There are many grave dangers found throughout the expanse. Some are far more unknown than others. It would be safe to say that most of them are completely unknown, for no one has been able to see them.

Trying to fly over the expanse does not work, as, for some unexplained reason, vehicles lose power as they travel over.

Once there was a time when someone almost managed to get farther than anyone else.  They were lucky enough to return in one piece. However, before they could tell anyone anything, they died due to natural causes and then, instead of people having hope, they were let remaining in the dark of a way to possibly getting father than anyone else.

I guess that kind of goes against what was said earlier, but sometimes that is the way of how things go with these things.

Anyway…

It is odd that the unknowable of the object adds to its desirability, although it isn’t.

There are many reasons as to why people would pursue the torture that would be to get the object; some people seek fame, whereas others want to observe and take notes. Some may want to destroy it, whilst some desire to move it to an even more remote location.
Some just want to find answers and then talk about them.

Although many people have tried to traverse the expanse and failed, no bodies have ever been found, nor an indication that people have been there. Many have been witnessed going in, but nothing s left remaining after they fail.

It is perhaps this reason that enhances the mystery of the object and the expanse itself.

Perhaps the expanse developed to protect the object from being taken and used for purposes that are unknowable due to the unsuitability of the object itself.

It is difficult to know.

There may be one day that someone will finally get through the danger and the mystery or the expanse and finally see the object. Despite what their purposes may be for doing so, we will no doubt have to respect their tenacity for having made it the whole way through. This is, of course, assuming they don’t end up dying from exhaustion and manage to come the whole way back through the expanse to the beginning again, therefore being able to show their vicinity to whoever would care to look on.

Until that time, people will keep on trying and failing, not realising that they could probably just go around and enter through the back.

Although, they can’t, but they should probably look where they’re going. It would help a lot.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:51:01

First time trying to make up fiction as I write it in a while.
It seems pretty… something.

I don’t know what to make of its quality.
Probably on the poorer end of things, but I’m not fussed.

Written at my (new) desk at home.
