Five-Hundred Word Challenge 476: Klang.

“Klang”.

The sound resonates off the walls, through the hearts of the populace and around the world ninety times before it can no longer be felt.

The dropping of the object was not what was expected. The watching of it fall was almost as though it was some sort of horrible dream.

The feeling of it hitting the floor and the sound that came out after was uncomfortable and, in a way, sickening.

What it symbolised was something far beyond what people could imagine, and as they tried they slowly went mad and became ravenous, gnashing their teeth and howling in incomprehensible screams.

No one knew what to do. What the object represented and what its fall signaled was something that no one had a solution for. No one could explain how it happened, either. IT just kind of happened.

There were plans set in place to prevent such an event happening, but of course no amount of planning could actually stop the fall from happening. All it did was merely reduce the chances of it happening at a few particular points in time.

As it sank through the air and reached for the ground, those that were around were wide-eyed. They wanted to jump in and stop the object from reaching its unintended target, but they dared not touch the object, for there was no telling as to what would happen.

And it rang out and spread across the surface of the earth and reached out to the peoples and they went mad from the revelation and they became violent and aggressive as they were exposed to the sound as it stretched across everyone.

It was a single sound that rang out  and it was a single sound that lead to society simultaneously deciding to eject itself from all that heard and felt that single sound.

This was a change that was not gradual, but sudden. It was almost as if a world that had great societies built was not even a concept. All succumbed to base primitive instinct and all stopped thinking.

In only a few weeks the human world was irrevocably changed for that period of time. Primitive behaviour ruled and those that were not strong enough were cast to the side to hide away from those that struck down that which got in their way to whatever they were targeting.

Eventually, with time a new society formed and slowly built itself upon the old formations. It was not quite something that resembled pure primitive behaviour, but also not something that could have been considered something advanced. It was purely modern in its scope and it functioned as well as it needed to. However, those that had survived did not know of the object and did not know of its sound, were it to fall once more.

No one knew and in that not knowing there was enough space for failure, for the structures were shaky and the new society was still fragile in its early infancy.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:28:22

Slow. A bit more together than some posts.

Surprised that this came out apocalyptic.
Still, it’s more fiction and I want to push my posts closer to fiction.

Written at work.
