Pat Metheny: You Are

One listen for this one. I tried to sort of follow the sounds and keep what I was writing as something that came out easy and I think I succeeded there, but I wonder if I could’ve done better going in with a plan of sorts.

Path Metheny’s “You Are” is from From This Place.

I hope you enjoy.

Keys speak into space. They speak with simplicity, draw out and link to each other. Soon they add a bit more but the space is there. The space remains, even as they add more to what they are saying. It’s speaking and breathing, maybe.

Percussion and bass reveal themselves briefly, though maybe the bass had been there for a bit and is coming more forward. Soon guitar also joins the conversation and it’s not long before the keys start almost rolling along. Everything else fills out more and the hum of strings floats around in the background seemingly as a constant.

Instruments build and fill but they maintain that space. They fill it in but they don’t suffocate; they allow for that breathing. There’s something akin to a voice here and there, accentuating, filling out and everything keeps on flowing as a slow rush, and it keeps on building and various instruments know when to add and pull back and move to something else, and they ride the melody as a build and it keeps growing and expanding, and in a way it is comforting as it seems to keep on going.

Everything releases but pulling back suddenly, and there is a lingering lowness. Soft takes over as all sink back into silence, and soon it’s just the keys. They speak into space; they speak into the quiet. They draw out and link to each other and they linger, then stop as the song ends.
