Dress Code

I REALLY need to put stuff up here more often.

To be honest, I’ve had a lot of ideas for writing. However, procrastination is a full time job.Oh well.

I’ve been with the same company for a fair while now. I don’t think highly of them. They’ve tried to do some things that a fairly suspect, but I’ve stuck it out with them as I like my job.
About a month and a half ago, I found out that according to our dress code, Hawaiian/Aloha shirts were technically acceptable attire for men outside of casual dress Fridays as our dress code stipulated that either dress shirts or polo shirts were acceptable attire.
This made me quite happy, as I like them a fair bit and have a few, but I don’t get to wear them often. So, naturally, I started wearing them to work.

This didn’t seem to be a problem until four weeks ago. Three others decided to start wearing Hawaiian/Aloha shirts every Monday, mostly because they could.After the second Monday, one other person started wearing Hawaiian/Aloha shirts every day. This was brought to an end come Wednesday afternoon.

One of the managers who prefers to remain in their office, infrequently stepping out and if so, seemingly refusing to acknowledge in the slightest any of the workers that aren’t team leaders or coordinators sent out an email advising of an updated dress code, stressing that Hawaiian/Aloha shirts were not acceptable business attire. Checking the actual dress code attached, dress and polo shirts had been removed for men and replaced with business shirts, which happened to also be both in bold font and underlined. The rest of the dress code was unchanged.

Come Thursday, early in the morning, the manager that sent out the email stepped out of their office to do some copying or printing or faxing and whilst they were, thought it appropriate to stare me down. I decided to check the legitimacy of the new dress code with our HR department. Sadly, they confirmed it was.

I understand that in an office environment, a certain level of professionalism in attire is to be maintained. However, a dress code should not be changed because someone doesn’t like it being followed in an unexpected way. Especially if that someone hides in their office as much as possible and ignoring most of the floor.

I probably wouldn’t take so much issue with it if they themselves followed dress code.Or if some of the other managers followed dress code.
One of them who happens to be friends with the code altering one seems to have had the dress code vaguely described to them, as they make no attempts to dress appropriately, usually showing up to work in an extremely casual attire with a business jacket.
However, this could be due to, as one manager explained it, a supposed different set of rules for managers that are incredibly difficult to locate.

Suffice to say, the whole silly situation has left a fairly bitter taste in my mouth, as well as others.

Well, at least, at the end of the week the dress code changed, the manager that had it changed was able to go to the pub with one of their office friends well before the work day had ended to reward themselves for a job well done.
