Five-Hundred Word Challenge 372: On the Acceptance of Weirdness

You know what really grinds my gears?

The whole idea that it is cool to be weird, as it seems to be to be some sort of fastidious grooming to look weird, as few people actually seem to like weird. They just like the image.

I think that it is fair to say that I’ve been weird most of my life. Possibly. I don’t know.
I used to be bullied for being weird. That’s how it was. Being weird was seen as something undesirable when I was growing up. It’s also something that’s lead to a lot of distance between myself and others and generally it leaves me left out in a lot of groups.

That’s not a complaint. That’s just the way life is sometimes. Not much you can do other than keep on living and being who you are and all that.

So at this point in time, people love the weird. Well, that’s at least what they say. They love weird things and love weird people.

It might be cynical to think, but I don’t think that people who claim this actually do love weird things. I really think that they’re trying to keep some sort of scenester / hipster image going in order to be cool, as most weird people are still left on the outside and not included.

Does anyone know why “weird” people are weird? It’s not due to their love of things that most people perceive as weird and try to stay away from as they cultivate their image of weird. It’s due to their attraction to things that may have been a part of their whole life.

It might be to them acting the way that they act due to finding their own place in something and choosing to be who they are.

These people (usually) don’t try to shape an image to present to people. They just do their thing.

Now this might seem as though I’m setting goal posts, but I’m not. I see a whole lot of people who claim to be weird putting on a facade almost as some sort of attempt to fit in, as it’s cool to be weird, just like it is cool to be a gamer.

Meanwhile people who are weird are still kept away from as they aren’t desirable. They’re not cool. They’re not people to be around.

Of course this does exclude weird people who are accepted, but that’s not the point. There’s a lot of weird people out there who are ignored by far too many people as their being weird is not considered socially acceptable. A lot of them don’t have to even be too weird for this to kick in.

There are worse issues out there, I will admit.
However, I can’t help but be frustrated by the whole adoption of image of people instead of actually accepting the substance of people.

I don’t understand why people do this. All it does is perpetuate a hollowness that shouldn’t be acceptable.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:05:65

This was much calmer than I thought it would be.
I don’t think I’ve made a strong argument.

It most definitely is a rant, but it could have been much better, I think.

Written at work.
