Watching Puss in Boots

When did I see Puss in Boots? I think it was in 2013. I don’t think I bought tickets to it. Someone I knew may have won them. Not sure. Anyway, I went and saw Puss in Boots and it was in 3D!

At the time I was still partially into getting stoned, and so I had a joint with the two others I went with.

There’s not much that I remember about the film. I remember Puss in Boots being really hairy, but that had more to do with my not putting on the 3D glasses for a large portion of the film. I think I ended up alternating a few times just to see what they were like, and I remember seeing the bean stalk collapse whilst I had the glasses on and that was a thing that happened.

I remember finding the detail the 3D glasses allowed to be a bit too much, hence the alternating. However, I’m now wondering if it was the other way around, though I’m pretty sure it was the increase in details rather than the decrease, and I think that partially has to do with my not wearing the glasses for a large portion of the film before I began alternating.

Now I’m wondering if it wasn’t a large portion and I began alternating earlier.

Spoilers, by the way.

I think there was a point in the film where Humpty Dumpty was evil. Then he wasn’t evil.

So anyway, after that the three of us went somewhere. It may have been to McDonald’s; it may have been to Hyde Park. Can’t remember. What I do remember is that we walked across George Street without looking. That section was still a while off before it became part of the light rail route and so there was plenty of personal vehicle traffic around.

We didn’t realise we crossed the road until after. I don’t think there were any nearby cars whilst we were crossing, but we were lucky we weren’t run over.

Ibis Walking

I was in Centennial Park yesterday afternoon which gave me the opportunity to get this photo. There’s nothing particularly good about it; it’s competent, but I like ibes and so I wanted to share this photo.

I hope you enjoy.

Envy: Shining Finger

One listen for this one.

There’s an ending of a song stuck in my head; well, not so much stuck but rather returning here and there. I can’t remember what song it is from and, after the hours I sunk into working out the previous song that was in my head (which happened over an afternoon and evening last week that eventually led to my working out it was Battles’ “My Machines” which I then decided to write about a couple of days ago) I decided to try and ignore this one. It comes and goes and I kind of care, kind of don’t.

Anyway, I thought it might be “Shining Finger” so I did a brief check this morning and it’s not. However, hearing the song for the first time in a while made me want to write about it and so I did.

I think this is mostly decent. There are parts that are weaker and I think that’s due to thinking too much about what I was writing, but overall I think I did better than usual with this one.

Envy’s “Shining Finger” is from Athiest’s Cornea.

I hope you enjoy.

Guitar plays spaced notes, coming in to gently touch and drift. Bass underscores with precise simplicity. When percussion comes in with its spaced beats the other instruments pick up a little and align in rhythmic flow. Vocals are also here and they speak brief, quick passages. The guitar and bass seem to build; they hit a point, the percussion builds a little and then everything expands in sound.

The moment is tender if a bit intense as the vocals grow harsh, but not aggressive. The flow is forward and it seems to hit a maximum glide of sorts. Then keys become apparent and space returns. In this slow moment the keys seem to flutter here and there whilst everything else sans the vocals stay back.

A sense of build once more as the vocals return, and all is gentle and not swaying, and then it all becomes massive once more. Similar to last time, though the vocals remain soft and the synth follows along. and it all seems to swing into some sort of cool future for a moment. Everything is aligned and smooth and loud and calm, and energetic.

A brief pause of build before going for the grand once more. The vocals, harsh once more, and the keys are dancing through and around as everything drives along. It is an expansive moment; it is a full moment, and once more the instrumentation hits that point of gliding, and glide it does.

There is relief and release here, and it’s all beautiful and seemingly celebratory. Loud and expansive, and not aggressive, and all keeps going toward a point which it soon strikes. From there the instruments release and fade, and the song ends.

Crouching by the Amp

Another photo of a musician.
I wasn’t sure about sharing this one due to how it turned out. I like it, but I find it lacks a lot of necessary sharpness. That said, I do like how expressive the musician comes across.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week. Participating is pretty straightforward and something I recommend. If you do, then include the tag “monochrome-madness” in your post. If not participating, then at the least check out Leanne’s photography as well as what other people submit.

I hope you enjoy.

Moondawg: Never let us Die

One listen for this one.

I wasn’t sure what would come forward but I was certain that I wanted to write about this song in some capacity. I think I did okay; some parts are better than others, but overall I feel this reads well enough.

In part I was thinking about an overcast dawn as I was writing but, based on how the song presents itself and how it progresses there’s a bit of openness regarding what imagery can come forward. It will likely be based around a few specific emotions, but there’s a bit of room available.

I first heard a snippet of “Never Let us Die” in the early aughts when it was used in Final Fighting Fantasy, a flash animation series by SplashKhat. I’d hunt for the full song every few years when I’d remember it; There is very little information out there on the song, as well as Moondawg and so, combined with my casual approach to searching for it, the search didn’t see success until 2020.

Moondawg’s “Never let us Die” may be from an album by the name of Southern Heat. I say may as I’ve found only one source that has information about an album, and I don’t know if the source is accurate.

I hope you enjoy.

Rustling in the wind, or waves lapping at the shore. A fragile rhythm forms on a light percussive touch. Another sound comes to form a base and alongside it reveals a sadness and strife. Gradually a beat comes forward, more energetic but still “low”, in a sense.

As the beat comes forward the light percussive touch disappears. The beat then starts “emptying” and becomes lighter, then also disappears. The base is there, lingering, languid, though perhaps hopeful. It is heavy in breaths.

A new beat comes along, much more firm and striking. With it another sound comes along and emphasises the rhythm. Eventually a pulse of sorts joins, and these new sounds move at a faster pace. The base remains slow and drawn out.

Gradually the beat pulls away and for a moment it stops. It seems to hold on a moment before it resumes once more.

The sounds continue their motion; they remain heavy, but there is perhaps a sense of warmth and comfort among it all. There is hope and there is drive, and maybe even relief.

Eventually the beat ends one last time and two sounds linger as though a final moment to hold on, as though staring out across a great expanse, then the song ends.

Battles: My Machines

Three listens for this one.
I struggled a bit trying to get anything down and I think that’s due to the song’s rapid pace alongside what has been an absolute struggle to write over the past few days.

I think I described the song well enough; If you listen to the song this does make sense. I also think I could’ve done a much better job.

Battles’ “My Machines” is from Gloss Drop.

I hope you enjoy.

Rapid light percussion moves in lanes and soon finds itself joined by something much louder and more present. Bass slides along on a bending rail. The percussion picks up and becomes louder, and perhaps more aggressive.

Vocals utter brief phrases as they rise and fall in a smooth, and punctual precision. Not long after a sudden and short rush of beeps follows, filling the space the vocals abandon. It stops as the vocals return, now joined by some sort of wavering synth sound that moves alongside the vocals.

The beeps return and guitar flicks alongside them. Once more it is a short rush and once more they stop as the vocals return and the synth follows them, stretching and compressing, rising and falling here and there. On one last rise there’s a sense of pause before the percussion resumes its rapid movement. It’s joined by the beeps, then soon after the bass returns in pauses.

In a sense the beep is reflected by another sound, then on the next run the sounds seem to rise. It’s not long before the percussion seems to stammer and almost starts crashing as everything moves upward before moving down. The percussion rhythmically rumbles as other sounds twist around each other and lower and push upward and seemingly contort.

The percussion stops and the other sounds continue moving inward and forward until they find a rest and the song ends.

Projecting Light

I took this a few months ago whilst covering a gig.
I believe my intention was to capture the lights projecting into the dark space. I don’t think I thought about this beyond that.

I think this works as a matter of fact object / action display. There probably is stuff beyond the surface that could be found in this. I also think this would work better if the bar was not visible.

I hope you enjoy.

Floral Headwear, Another View

It’s the hat I shared yesterday, today.
I wanted to also share this view as it shows more of the design off. It’s minimal, yet detailed and I think that’s nice.

This is my submission into the two hundred-and-seventy-fourth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge. The theme for this one is “Asymmetry“.

The host of the Lens-Artists challenges cycles weekly between the following people:

Week 1 – Tina

Week 2 – Patti

Week 3 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 4 – Amy

Week 5 – John Steiner

Week 6 – Sofia Alves

Week 7 – Anne Sandler

Week 8 – Donna

Week 9 – Guest host

Donna is curating this one. The next is curated by Anne.

I recommend participating in the challenges as they provide a fun way to interpret theme. If not participating, then at least you should still check out what others of the Lens-Artists community are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

Floral Headwear

Here’s another hat.

This was one where I was aiming for clarity over anything else. I don’t know how to do product photography well; I think this is a decent photo, but it’s not a good product photo, if that makes sense.

I hope you enjoy.

Drakh: Norrssken

One listen for this one.
Early on I tried to move less toward describing what was happening but I wasn’t quite able to. Overall I think I covered the song well enough but I also know that I could’ve done much better.

Drakh’s “Norrssken” is from Bethlehem.

I hope you enjoy.

Faint wisps float here and there, and layer into themselves without expanding. a slight lingering from them as they fade into something new and similar, shrinking into form and a low rumble appears, murmuring rather than striking out.

For a moment that rumble holds court, then the other sounds return. Something moves forward, then suddenly pulls away, and the sounds are growing more prominent in places. They are moving to the foreground as they play the quiet among the noise.

A beat suddenly appears and takes lead, or at least it seemingly does. It strikes with a shudder and a force, and with it something akin to a voice moves alongside. Everything else is there, perhaps following along, or moving around it. Perhaps they do not know the beat is there, and perhaps there is danger in this.

The beat fades away and the sounds continue their moving in trails and wisps. They appear here and there and they hum and harmonise, and there is a great history that doesn’t exist within them. They show in moments and they linger as they change and fold into themselves.

The wisps are all that is left; they continue on until one final moment where they then disappear and the song ends.
