Five-Hundred Word Challenge 820: One More Thing Tonight

I think I’ve got one more thing in me tonight before I go to sleep, but I don’t know if I do, but there is only one way to find out and in the way that I need to find out is by writing this, so we’ll see what happens. It could be a mess. It probably will be a mess.

Anyway, so I sit here and finally it is not as hot as it was before and I find that very much to be a relief as I was getting a little over the heat. I’d prefer the coolness as the heat was too hot and so it was causing me to slow down a little, or something. Anyway, I think I’ve made that point so I need to move onto other things now so that I make many points, but ultimately I will get nowhere as it’s late and I need to sleep soon and sleep is important as the more sleep you get, the better rested you are and the better rested you are the more functional you feel, I think.

There are other things that you might feel, of course, and you may not feel them all at once and that probably is better, to be honest as some things you may not want to feel at the same time as other things as that may cause some sort of clash and then you have to deal with the mess and the mess is never fun to deal with, so the message is that you should take care of yourself where you can and don’t be afraid of asking for help from others. It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help. Of course it has to be in moderation, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I think that that is all for this evening. It was a long day and now I must find a way to rest sooner rather than later. Perhaps writing this late in the evening is not a good idea, but sometimes I make bad ideas and that is fine. I don’t necessarily mind some of the time. If it was all of the time, then I’d mind. Right now? Don’t really mind. That’s okay.

Still, I’m sure that I will be able to unwind so long as I force myself to do so rather than let it happen all naturally so that I get to a point where I am relaxed rather than more tense. So long as I force myself, I am sure that I will be able to relax quickly and it will be a complete success and I won’t have to worry about anything else anymore and therefore I will sleep and it will be the best sleep I’ve ever had. This is how it all works and now that I have revealed that, I guess I really should look at resting, so resting is now what I shall try to commence the act of doing.

This was a lot easier to write than I had expected.

Connected

Although there is some processing adding to the effect, the sunset in this photo was not as strong as it appears. The shots came through with the colours being rather saturated and I really liked how it affected the mood of the image, so I didn’t de-saturate.

Anyway, here’s a dramatic scene.

Kind of similar to this photo, as well as this photo. More so the latter than the former, but they’re all somewhat-dramatic.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-twenty-fifth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “You Pick it!“.

I don’t mind a good sunset and I find the coldness of industry interesting.
I also like the combination of the two and not just for the dramatic imagery.
I think that through the contrast an interestingly bleak and sometimes menacing image can result. Of course something beautiful can result too, but I think here it’s more on the menacing side of things. Maybe.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This week’s challenge is curated by Tina. Next week Patti is curating.

The theme for next week’s challenge has been announced in advance. It is “Subjects That Begin With the Letter A”.

The challenges are pretty fun and there’s a lot of room for interpretation that doesn’t get in the way of enjoyment. If you’re into photography, then I suggest participating, or at the least checking out what other people are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 90: Hot Sunday Ramble

Alright, so I’m making an attempt once more and I’m going to see how far I get and how fast I go. Really sore in the wrist at the moment, but I think I can get through the whole way. Not sure, but I think I can.

Whether I actually can or not is another story entirely, but of course it is one of those “we’ll see what happens” things, so we’ll see what happens.

Or maybe we won’t. Maybe nothing will happen and I will completely can this and that will be that. No one will read this. No one will be able to see the brilliance that I was able to conjure. That would be a problem – maybe – so I should stick to it and keep on conjuring the brilliance so that everyone can read and see the brilliance and thus proclaim that this is indeed a brilliant piece of writing.

Look, I like to dream and I like to dream big, even if those dreams are unattainable. You gotta go with what you can, you know. I’m just doing that and so I shall continue to dream and have a large ego of sorts and push on with all of that other stuff.

I guess I should really try to push forward now and try to get to the end of this first before I begin to attempt to make proclamations of grandeur. That would be a better thing to do than… I guess… making those proclamations and then not delivering, or something. It’s all about the building of the up rather than the winding of the down and I sure do like to escalate things to unreasonable levels and so that is what I shall do in the present moment, or something.

Or maybe I will not and I’ll just continue going on and hope that something will happen that will guide me toward something else and then there shall be a series of lights that I should follow or something, and I shall follow them and then they shall lead me to whatever it is that I seek (I’ve no idea on this one) and then I shall look at what it is that I seek and I shall seek the answers and in seeking the answers I will try and find a response and that response will then be something glorious and golden. That is what I hope, or maybe I don’t. Maybe I hope for other things.

There probably are a lot of things that I hope for that I am not aware of and maybe that is a bad thing. I don’t know if it is a bad thing or a good thing. Should one know what they hope for? Probably in some cases it is good to know, whereas in others it might not be so good to know. Who knows?

Anyway, I think I have dwelled on that subject for perhaps a little too long and so I need to find something else to move onto as I’m wasting my time now, or maybe I’m not and I’m just pretending to waste my time in order to move the subject onto something else. That is how it works sometimes and that is something I’m rather fine with, I think. Maybe not always, but right now I am. However, I’m taxed and I’m sitting here and I am sweating a lot more than I would like and so heat is on the brain. Also, soon work starts and I need to worry about that at some point. Hopefully later rather than sooner, but I don’t completely know what the case will be. Just hope that it will be later rather than sooner. Well, I can hope, but there is no changing as to how soon my shift starts and so I should get ready soon. Still have a bit of free time, however, and so I need to take advantage of that to some extent so I can maximise what time I have.

I guess that in writing this I am taking advantage of the time afforded to me and so that is something that I have revealed. I guess that in announcing that I need to maximise my time I have revealed to myself that I am indeed maximising my time by taking advantage of the time that I have to write this and that’s a good thing, I guess. It provides a nice feeling as I have a small sense of achievement that I now get to have as solely my own, though of course it can be shared with others and sharing is something that is worth doing, even if it is not something particularly outstanding, so consider this bit of writing something that I am sharing with all of you and so you can read it and think to yourselves “Hmm, he really is sharing whatever this bit of writing is”, and then you pass it on toward other people and it keeps on going and so on and so forth.

Anyway, I think I really have said all that I can say, so now it is the time in which I spend the time to wrap this up so I can get onto other things such as getting ready for the day of work which thankfully is a short one. I will relax and get busy and be busy relaxing, and it will all come together in the end and present itself as something complete that is ready to tackle the next goal, which is the actual job of which I am paid to do, which I hope will be slow going as slow going means doing less and I want to be lazy as the heat is something that bothers me more than it should, and not just for reasons of discomfort. However, that is a writing for another day.

Not today; another day, such as one where I feel like writing about the heat.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 09:48:52

This is a mess. Should’ve been an earlier-shared mess, but for some reason I waited until after work, so yeah.

Passing Through Here

Not a great photo by any means, but I do like how the sky appearing as invisible as it does here almost makes this feel like it’s in its own pocket of isolated space.

I also like how only part of the train appears in motion and part of it appears still.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 819: Firmly Derail

Sweating like someone who is sweating as it is rather hot and I sit here, sweating, trying to muster the words so I can pout something together, but it has gotten late into the evening and I am also getting tired, so I need to work quickly, lest I fall asleep at my desk and then fail to get anything done.

However, the heat is making me think about the heat which in turn is making me feel hotter and that is something that I much rather do not enjoy, so the hope is that somehow everything cools down sooner rather than alter and then I can relax and fizzle out and then be at ease and rest and sleep and all of those other things that I so desperately want to do at this present moment, but cannot as sweating is on the agenda and the agenda is sweat.

Yes, I’m complaining about something I can do little about at the moment, but that is what I am doing and I shall persist through it all as that is better than some other option that I think may be a worse option to have, though it is good to have options so long as you make decisions.

Anyway, I don’t know as to what else I am to write at this present stage. It’s more that I’m tired than it is that I am hot, but being this hot does not help, let me tell you. I guess it is a combination of the two more than anything else, then. I guess that I should probably have a shower soon and cool down a bit and then just crash for the evening, as that is indeed an option, but it is not the option that I want to take.

I want to struggle on and keep on complaining and do all of the other things that I want to do and then call it a day and go to sleep and sweat all throughout my bed so that I can wake up in a sweat and feel something that makes me think that it was a good sleep and I feel refreshed, or something, but I don’t know as to what I’m going on about from here so now I’m just going to firmly derail and see where this all goes, but I shouldn’t start with talking about space as if I do that, then it’s all a bit too obvious, you see, and it needs to be subtle somehow. Not sure how I’ll get subtlety, but somehow and some way I will.

Anyway, I think that it is time for me to take a breath and know how to not, and from there I will make sure to mosey on down t where the stairs ascend and see how it all bends toward an inner light. Once at the basement I’ll stroodle the kazoo so long as the glint bends the twist toward top-wise through the complete never.

It’s a little too warm for me at the moment.

Rear View Preening

Behold! Another ibis preening.

Slightly awkward angle but I like how it makes the ibis look like a feathery lump with legs.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 818: Late in the Afternoon

And so it finally begins, late in the afternoon, and it is the time where I race off into the distance and hope that somehow I pass the finish line with little to no issue whatsoever. Whether this does happen or not is another story entirely and it is not one that I feel like very ,much getting into at the present moment as that would then mean that I need to engage with forms of fiction of which I am currently ill-equipped for, which may or may not be an issue, unless I refuse to address it, in which case it will always be an issue and issues are not what I want at the moment as this is not a serialised blog in any way, shape or form.

Anyway, I think that I know what I do want to do and what I do not want to do, and right now it all pertains to the art of racing against a timer and seeing how far I can get before the pain really takes over and causes more issues than it solves. Such is the way of things, I suppose. However, I really need to address this pain as it is starting to cause some issues that I cannot avoid, and so I need to address it sooner rather than later unless I want to deal with the pain for longer rather than… shorter… amounts of time, so to speak, if you catch my drift and so on and so forth and anyway, this is all going to devolve into a mess of words as it always does, but sometimes that is the way that I like to do things. I don’t dream big; I just keep the mess around and live in it, and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, or something to similar effect. Now, where was I?

Oh, right. I am currently at home and I am sitting here and banging this out and therefore I am doing something which is a little bit more than doing nothing. That’s alright. That’s fine by me. The day of work ended a while ago and now I get to do the thing where I don’t get to relax as there still remains many a thing that needs doing, but such is the way that I need to get things out of the way and I will continue to do so, come what may. So long as I persist, I am sure that I will get there in the end. The hope is to get there in the end and get more things done rather than less things done, but you see, I’m currently in a race and the race is against a timer and I am nearly there, but I don’t know how much longer I need to go before I finally see the end of this.

Slight pause and now I can see. There isn’t much left, so I’ll just close this off… here.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 04:41:83

Fast and messy, so somewhat of the norm.

Sophia: Holding On / Letting Go Review

Another review that took longer than I’d hoped to edit.

Not a great review. Probably not a good review either, but once more I feel as though I’m moving toward something.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

“Strange Attractor” kicks off Holding On / Letting Go with this beeping synth that is a little cheesy at first. As it plays on and some more ambient sounds build on what it’s doing, it gains a bit more of a weighted, dramatic feel; It shifts and solidifies, then really thickly distorted guitar (or bass) comes in and does this little descending thing. Then more guitar, then everyone else comes in and creates a sense of a “driving sadness”. Robin’s vocals are soft, poppy and uncertain, but the song keeps on moving forward, knowing its destination.

“Undone. Again.” follows suit, though with less loudness. The sense of “driving sadness” sticks around, but the tone seems more reflective and perhaps a little less sad. There certainly remains a sense of going a distance, however, and it all carries through simple, yet solid instrumentation creating this really solid, structural sound. There’s some stuff in the background helping carry the tone and Robin Proper-Sheppard sounds more delicate than usual. It’s kind of a different form of Sophia, yet resolutely familiar.

“Wait” sees thing go more wide and “cinematic”. There’s kind of a slinky, sensual darkness to this one. It feels almost like a western which the fragile vocals and soft harmonies help to paint the song firmly of the night. The song is big without being big. There’s a moment for some more broken guitar to come in and play something really looking to wrench out the song’s emotion.

“Alive” strips things back a little and brings in some sexy sax without necessarily being sexy. It’s sort of a mood codifier, expressing a sense of passion and heaviness. It helps that Sophia play this one “slow” and spaciously as when the saxophone shows up, it gets the focus it needs to work for the song. The lyrics which (as far as I’m aware) pertain to questions regarding what sounds like self-destructive tendencies get to feed off what the underlying music provides and overall the mood hangs thick in the air to great effect.

Like “Wait”, “Alive” also feels cinematic, but it’s a different kind of film at this point. Still perhaps the same meaning and intent, but different scenery and plot.

At this point Holding On / Letting Go has been growing heavier in overt mood. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. There certainly is a strong sense of sadness, but there seems to be something buoying it, preventing everything from sinking into the depths. Perhaps it is due to the songs feeling reflective and at times contemplative whilst still being emotive. Maybe it’s due to how quickly the songs seem to go by; not a minute thus far feels wasted and so everything carries forward quite well. It’s good then that the album doesn’t slump in the remaining tracks.

“Gathering the Pieces” carries a sense of minimalism; spaced percussion, simple bass and clean guitar, and background synth keep things going forward, though in a slow manner. There is some additional sounds that add a bit more shape to the song, but they emphasise rather than clutter. The space helps the lyrics really come forward; They seem to express a sense of inevitability whilst also choosing to own up to the mistakes arising from that inevitability.

“Avalon” keeps clean guitar at the forefront and the band playing steadily, once more letting the mood permeate everything. The synth in the background helps to give the song a more gentle, sorrowful feel. I can’t tell if it’s a song about dependency, or choosing to live with hurt, but it’s a really beautiful performance, once more wringing out as much emotion as it can out of everything. It just really hits hard; Everyone’s playing as much as necessary and all the emotion just pours forward. It’s an effective song.

It’s a relief that the more bittersweet-sounding “Days” comes on after. There’s something a bit more relaxed about this song, but like a few songs prior it carries a strong sense of questioning. Providing a bit of lightness whilst keeping the song feeling grounded with the others, “Days” helps just kind of floats along rather than pushes onward. It also highlights Robin Proper-Shepard’s knack for writing poignant lyrics and melodies to support those lyrics.

Following on is “Road Song” which feels much like a road song. The return to a sense of western scenery comes with a sense of the dark. It’s highly rhythmic, very driven and once more holds a sense of questioning. The vocals sound like there’s an aching in the questioning, perhaps to do with the continued sense of reflection interwoven in the album. At the end a noisy guitar “solo” howls out into the song’s night, and once more Sophia make good use of their time.

Suddenly Sophia find themselves rocking out. Based on what Robin Proper-Shepard has said about the song “We See You (Taking Aim)” is the most political Sophia have produced… maybe ever. Though oddly muted, this is just a driving, loud and fuzzed-out rock song that almost feels like Sophia are on some kind of game show. The lyrics hold little room for interpretation; They remain pointed throughout and their delivery makes sure they come with a bite. The song is odd, being relatively brief and feeling unexpected considering what came before… at first. On repeat listens to Holding On / Letting Go it feels more and more like a warranted inclusion.

After “We See You (Taking Aim)” wraps up, Holding On / Letting Go commences its final minutes with something foreboding. Soft sounds ease their way in, slowly drawing out and setting up a sort of uneasy feeling. Soon guitar enters, strumming away and emphasising the atmosphere. Soon it shifts and adds more guitar, building on that mood and creating a sense of space. However, it does not last and the main riff returns. Bass now enters, providing more form to the melody. Eventually percussion enters the fold, precise and steady, creating a firm rhythm.

The soft sounds seemingly grow in prominence as the percussion gains more punch; Specific strikes along a path seemingly walked, seemingly of relation, sadness and all the hardship that it may entail. If everything before this was the Holding On, then maybe this is the Letting Go.

The song has slowly built itself up, but its here where it starts to move toward its climax. Percussion stays precise but also seems to build. Vocal sounds come in forming wordless melodies, building on the sound. The instruments rise and work toward what feels like realisation, acceptance and moving on. The music keeps expanding and as it does it becomes more emotionally affecting. However, before it becomes too much, “Prog Rock Arp (I Know)” ends and so too does the album.

Holding On / Letting Go sounds a lot like a journey. There seems to be a lot of questioning and reflecting in this one, though more for thought than looking for specific answers. Part of this has to do with the lyrics (surprising I know); Part of this has to do with the delivery.

Anyone familiar with Robin Proper-Sheppard’s work knows that he knows his way around a song and how to make it connect; here it’s no different. He doesn’t necessarily hit you hard (though sometimes he does), but what his words convey and how he conveys them sounds naturally effortless. The songs of Holding On / Letting Go mostly inhabit a certain kind of space; as such, he takes on a more softened and fragile, yet firm delivery that suits everything quite well. It enhances the sense of questioning and reflecting without adding nostalgia, letting the emotional content come through without it feeling like its trying to make a cheap grab.

It helps that the others in the band know how to deliver the material and make it click. These are musicians unafraid of doing what is necessary, leaving enough room for mood and tone to get across with ease. The lyrics come in with clarity and the music helps carry them forward; together they make the songs sound both tight and moving.

Holding On / Letting Go is more on the softer side of Sophia’s music, and that’s very much to its benefit. Some of the stuff is perhaps more simple and straightforward than usual, and that too is fine. This is not an album that required urgency; Had these songs been constant loud guitar stuff, they just wouldn’t have worked. Instead of that, Sophia have released another great collection of songs, effective in what they convey and provide.

Holding On / Letting Go is available here.

Three Mistletoe Birds

Also known as Dicaeum hirundinaceum.

This is what I feel was a rather lucky shot. Only able to capture it due to my partner noticing the one standing on the top of the statue.

I think I kept looking back a few times and then saw one flying around, then the other one to the left. I think.

Anyway, I like this photo due to how it shows the birds moving about relative to each other.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 817: Fell Into Some Type of Space

Sleepy, tired and all of that other stuff that indicates some sort of lack of sleep, or just low energy and some other things that it is meant to indicate, or something. I don’t quite know as to what it is meant to indicate, but this is something that indicates something and so that is what I shall play around with in the hopes that I will get to the end of the day.

Well, it is almost midday and I am yet to start with the process of creating things, so here is where I start. I will write this, then some other things and then after those things I will write some more and find a way to claw along the path of which I have rolled out for myself but am pretending I did not so as to be able to express more surprise rather than less surprise, which just so happens to be the way that sometimes you need to roll and get ahead in order to go behind and move forward until you are ahead of yourself, so long as the deep diving does not go to deep.

But let us say that the diving does indeed get deep and you discover nothing. What happens from there? Do you go back to surface and get on with your life, content in the fact that there was nothing within yourself that was available for the art of discovery? Perhaps. Perhaps you get on with your life and forget about the event, though occasionally remember it as some little novelty of which you found was appreciable, but outside of that it is something utterly meaningless to you. However, in discovering that there really was nothing inside of yourself and you were all surface is still perhaps a discovery of deep discovering regardless of the implication. Perhaps this is the case as it still reveals a little more about yourself and that is something that you can grow from and expand upon and all that other stuff.

Say you decide to keep on going and keep looking, however. What then? Where do you go? Do you refuse to accept what it is that you’ve discovered, shake your fist and keep going? Perhaps that reveals some sort of denial, but it also reveals that there was something a little bit more at the same time. It reveals your refusal to perhaps accept a simple answer, which of course can lead down a dangerous path, just as any other choice can, but this is something best left considered by minds equipped to think about these sorts of things, as I am merely throwing words around and dipping my toes into some sort of shallow pool in the hopes that I sound smarter than I am.

Well, either that or I just managed to luck out and write something that some people might get something out of. I’m not sure as to which one yet. Give it a bit of time.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:56:45

Really not sure as to what I was going for here, though I don’t mind how surface this bit of writing turned out.
