Five-Hundred Word Challenge 649: Just Some Life Stuff

So I thought I’d be able to write a bit more throughout the day, but apparently work had other ideas. Cruisy shift though and that makes me pretty happy if I am to be honest, but anyway, that’s not why I’m writing right now.

Actually, there was something else that got in the way, but it’s not something that I can comment on at the moment. Not bad; just something that I don’t know if I will or will not share. Related to a day coming up very shortly, but we’ll see what happens. Either I will share or I won’t.

Anyway, now my hands aren’t cooperating as much as I would like, so I’m trying to write this and I’m struggling quite a lot. Probably means that I should stop f0or the evening, but alas, I still have the fire in me and that fire is pushing me along quite nicely. I shall keep on going until I hit a point where I can no longer write.

Need a bigger keyboard though, I think. That would help. I feel as though my hands are a little too big for this keyboard, though it’s not something that I’ve thought about before if I am to be honest. Now I am thinking about it and that is a bit of a worry. Well, it’s not but I want to make it a worry as that is more dramatic, or something.

Anyway, here I am. The evening is quiet, it is relaxed and I am breaking the sound of the relaxation of night with my loud, aggressive typing. Wire is playing in the background. To be specific, the song “Red Barked Trees” off the album Red Barked Tree. I’m meant to be listening to Mind Hive right now and I will get back to that shortly. However, right now I want to hear this song. This is the song that got me into Wire and I still think it’s great. I think they have done better, but this remains a good song of theirs as far as I’m concerned.

I think that if I do manage to get through this I will relax for about five minutes, then do the dishes, then get to sending off some questions to some artists so that I can then get their answers and put them on Culture Eater. Maybe they won’t respond. Maybe they will. We’ll have to see.

Well, I guess that pretty much covers everything as far as I’m aware. This is just a slice of life at the moment which I guess is due to being at the end of the day and rather tired. Still have the fire but my mind is a little too elsewhere at the moment. Well, as they say, sometimes that is the way things go, but I’m not going to dwell on that. Instead I’ll just dwell on other things as I write questions for artists to answer so I can put them on Culture Eater.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:15:23

This was quite difficult to write. I noticed the keyboard size thing and then my right hand started hurting. Oh well.

Not great. Really simple and easy to read, I think.

Somewhat-happy that I still have the energy to write at this point in the day, to be honest.

Didn’t denounce the day, but got past my worries at the very least.

Screamfeeder: Pop Guilt Review

I thought I shared this review here when I wrote it in 2017, but that appears to have not been the case.

I feel this review is a little on the short side. For my review attempts, three-hundred words is just enough for an informative review (I think). This one has information but it’s clear that there are parts that I could have expanded upon but didn’t for some reason.

Oh well.

I can still remember a fair bit of the album and should play it again some time soon. It’s quite good.

This is as it was when it went up on Cool Try.

Along with most of my review and interview work, this review is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going. We’ve recently switch to weekly releases and soon will be giving the patrons a bit more.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Screamfeeder have have released Pop Guilt which is their first album since their last album. It features songs that they have written.

Not straying too far from what they’ve previously put out, Pop Guilt is primarily a rock record with a bit of pop mixed in for good measure for an overall lush, driven sound. There’s not much of an ebb and flow, but the songs never veer too far into rock or pop excess.

The playing is really tight, with most of the focus on the rhythm rather than anyone in particular, leading to the album feeling more like a cohesive whole. Solos are heard on occasion, but are kept brief enough to not drag out the length of the songs.

The vocals aren’t the strongest, but they do suit the songs as they are used quite well. Whilst sitting on top of the music, they never seem to aim to take all of the attention. Furthermore, the vocals deliver all the lyrics in a way that never leaves them feeling downbeat and instead match the energy of whichever song for which they are used.

If there is a problem with Pop Guilt, it is that at times it sounds a bit too close to the past. It doesn’t sound like this was intentional, nor does it sound like an attempt to bank on nostalgia as it suits the songs quite well and doesn’t leave them feeling dated. However, there are moments where it can become distracting.

Pop Guilt is worth the time. The songs work well together and there’s a nice warm feeling that permeates through the record. At times there’s a bit too much of a sense of a bygone era, but it doesn’t affect the record too much. Pop Guilt is a welcome return for Screamfeeder.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 648: Denounce the Day

“Some days just drag on, but that’s not why we’re here. We’re here to denounce the day and our worries and get to the business of getting on with the day and solving our worries, or something like that.

We’ll work out the plan on the way. Well, maybe we won’t, but we likely will. That is, of course, so long as this doesn’t devolve into something that has nothing other than a load of gibberish to it. Still, we can do the denouncing and that is the start. That is the foundation of which we need to set up so that the rest will follow. The hope is that the rest will follow, of course. It may not. Maybe we’ll all just sit here, waiting for something else entirely. Maybe we’ll do the denouncing, then accept all of it back into our day, but that is something that we of course hope not to do. What we hope to do is get on with it and find something. Maybe it’ll be a bit of partying. Maybe it will not be anything related to anything. There is plenty of time to tell as there is still plenty of time in the period known as the daytime. When the nighttime comes, there will be time for relaxing if that is indeed the choice made, but there will also be time for continuing on if the planning goes that far.

Need to work it all out first, but at the same time will probably not work anything out and feel the way through. It’s all too relaxing a day today. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but there are concerns that it will get in the way of things. If it does indeed get in the way of things, then where does that leave the rest of us? At home? In a park? Going for a walk? Who knows?

Maybe instead of all of this we’ll just scatter off into the winds and go our own way and that too is fine, but today is too much of a day to spend it letting the worries take over. Of course sometimes the worry and stress cannot be avoided, but we must do our best to put those aside, as well as do our best to help those whom are overwhelmed. We must help them shoulder their burden wherever we can and help them get back on their feet. Then they too can be better off and do what they can with the rest of the day.

But even if that does all fall through and we do carry our worries without denouncing them, then at the very least we still should help others where we can. It’ll make them better off and it will make us better off. It will build a stronger sense of community and help with reaching states of clarity. Either way, there will be an onward, even if it ends up being just partying” they said.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:11:37

This somehow became a more fictitious in my mind the longer I wrote. Not sure why as I think some of the message is important.

One Thousand Word Challenge 38: Itchy and Learning

My left elbow is far itchier than I thought it would be. I thought it would not be itchy at all, and yet it is. I feel a strong urge to scratch it, but instead I’m going to try and hold off. It’s just bad timing, really. It didn’t need to become itchy right now. It could’ve waited another twenty minutes which is when I’d be able to give it my full attention. However, for some reason it chose now. Of all the time in the world my elbow could’ve chosen to require a good scratching, now is the time. This is not conducive to getting things done, let me tell you. Why didn’t it wait? Is this some sort of malicious plan against me? Have I done something that I am not aware of that led to it deciding that now would be the time to strike and cause all sorts of distraction which is anathema to my being able to write? Do I even dare question this? J do not feel as though I should. I feel that right now there are other, far more important things of which I should worry about. There are things that I need to get out of the way. There are things that I need to get done.

Or are there?

Well, there is only one way to find out and I’m not going to entertain that desire either. There are other, other things that I want to get done, such as this text. I need to make sure that I don’t get distracted. I need to stay on target. My target is, of course, the end of this series of words that create a body of text. Where will that end be? Will it be now? Will it be later? Will it be near? Will it be far? Will it be some indeterminate point in the future that I am yet to come across? My guess is somewhere around the fifteen minute mark, but of course this is only a guess. This is not based on anything other than prior experience. In that way you could argue that my guess is of the educated variety, but I don’t often believe my guesses come close to what the reality is, unless they do and I refuse to pay attention to the success of my guesses.

Maybe I should pay more attention. There could be some serious learning there that I have ignored all of this time. If that is indeed the case, then it would be apparent that all this time I’ve had something to draw from and have not been drawing from and of course that would be a great loss to me as learning gives me more knowledge and makes me able to make more informed decisions and statements. No learning does not lead to this and that in itself is an issue, though sometimes you do learn from your mistakes if you are willing to learn from them, so there is also that. However, I’d much rather learn from my mistakes and successes early rather than when it is too late for a situation most serious  and grave. That would be an issue; one that might have grim repercussions that would be far too difficult to come back from.

I think that is what I was trying to get across, but then again I don’t know. I don’t know as to where I am going with this. I do know that my elbow is still itchy and I still have a strong desire to scratch it. That is a bit of an issue as it is something that I do not want to scratch. However, my head now also is itchy. I don’t know what to do about this. I can’t break the role that I feel I am on. If I do that, then where will I be? Other than at home with a satisfied series of itches and needing to pick ups team once more. I don’t want to be in that position. I have so much more hat I want to get done and I don’t want to break my motion right now. It’s rough, but progressive and moving at a good pace. A good pace to have when writing is a wonderful pace. A good pace can be slow, fast or somewhere in the middle. Right now I feel as though I’m going fast which is what I want. I don’t want to slow, but I inevitably will if I am not careful. Need to be careful, of course. Need to make sure that I keep the balance. Need to make sure that I get to whatever it is that I’m trying to get to as once I get there, then I’m sorted, or something. I think.

Once this is done I can then satisfy the issue that plagues me.

Oh no; I just scratched my side and I need to get back on track. That’s going to cost me a bit of time, maybe. Maybe it won’t.

Nope, back on pace. Most excellent. This is good. I’ve recovered. Bit of a slip but I’m back on track. Being on track is where I want to be and so long as I stay there, I can get to the end of all of this. I can see the line of the finish and soon I will reach that point. So long as I reach that point, then I can give myself a brief respite. That is all I need. Just one moment. Scratching to satisfy the itches and ruminating on the experience. I believe that is multitasking of the highest order. I think. I don’t know. Maybe it’s not. Who knows?

I guess we’ll see.

Still, I can’t spend too long satisfying the itches and thinking as if I do then I won’t get enough done. That is what I am worrying about today. So really, it’s the same as always, but with itches involved.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 11:51:78

So this clearly was influenced by my need to scratch my elbow.

It’s both silly and serious in a way that makes me happy.

Not a great text, but it feels personal without being overbearing. It also feels small in a way that I like.

Vegetative Mass

There was a bit more space between the trees than this shot implies.
Well, some of the trees anyway.
Maybe this shot is showing the right amount of space and I’m remembering things incorrectly.

Anyway, this is another shot taken during my recent trek out of Sydney.

There’s a warmth to this shot which I think has a lot to do with the fallen foliage.

There’s also a fair bit of cluttering from the bare branches, but the area doesn’t seem uninviting as, despite vegetation filling almost every space of the shot, there still is space.

This is my submission into the ninety-second Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Going Back“. I think this shot counts both for it being a return to a region I was in last year and also for it happening recently rather than right now.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is guest-hosted by John Steiner of Journeys with Johnbo. Leya hosts the next one.

I recommend giving the challenges a go and seeing how you interpret each theme. I also recommend checking out what other people are doing to meet the challenges.

I hope you enjoy.

In the Shape of a Tree

The tree is clearly visible, but only its general shape is distinct. There is little detail to see, but of course it’s still clear that the tree is a tree.

I like how the fog affects how the tree is seen and how it removes the tree from the context of its surroundings.

I also like how the tree still feels large.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 647: Momentous Occasion

It’s currently cold. It’s cold inside and it’s cold outside, but it will get a bit warmer which will of course be good for drying clothes and growing plants. Today is going to be a good day; At least, that is what I have to tell myself before the start of my shift.

There are things that I’m currently thinking about, but that isn’t out of the ordinary. I need to turn those thoughts into physical manifestations and see how they play out, lest I let them go and drift on away. I think that if I am able to do something with them, then I will be able to embiggen my freedom of motion and therefore find a way to traverse on things that I could not traverse before, but this is all before considering the implications of the way that motion captures the heart when you’re facing all of  the reality of delusion with only one hand active as the other is off doing its own thing such as filing your taxes. Of course I’d rather both, but in this instance one will have to suffice.

There is another thing that I need to consider, but if I address it now I don’t think I’ll earn myself the time that I hope, but then again you can’t earn time. You can only expend it, so I need to make sure that the expenditure is efficient. I don’t want to be wasting the time that I have, though it never truly is wasted when you think about it, for any time being alive is time well spent. It’s just that there are better things to do some of the time. Some of the time there aren’t better things to do. Right now there are things I’d rather be doing than taking calls from the comfort of my home, but them’s the brakes as they say. But then again, who says that? They could be anyone. It could be the fish down at the pub whom you see from the corner of your eye. No one recognises the fish and the fish revels in it, but you know and one day you will make sure that the fish gets found out. Not today, not tomorrow, but one day.

It will be a momentous occasion. There will be festivities, dancing and fasting and then more festivities. There will be cause for celebration as you were the one who dared. You were the one who went to face the challenge. No one else was game, but you certainly were. You took the opportunity and you jumped on it with all of your might. It was a good day for there was success from adversity and strength through vision and determination. Sometimes there were doubts, but you always had it in you. You saw it through and through seeing it through you went the distance and finally revealed the fish, but in doing so you also realised that there was no turning back.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:34:54

This one kind of went elsewhere. As I started writing it seemed as though the text would turn out pretty unremarkable. It did, but not in a way grounded in reality. I like that.

Omahara: Upsilamba Review

I had to think about whether I was going to share this review here or wait a while. When it comes to sharing what I’ve written, it has a lot to do with whether I purchased what the review is about or if it was something I was offered to review.

If the former the then I’ve no issue sharing the review here. If the latter then I’d prefer not to.

As Cool Try hasn’t been a thing for a while I’ve no issue with sharing stuff I wrote for them as, even though the quality of that stuff is worse than what I’m doing now, I still want it to be out there.

Whilst this review was on something I was offered to review, I want to share this now as it is important to me.

I don’t feel as though the way I write reviews is cutting it at the moment, so I’ve decided to work on altering that by doing what I described to the person I run Culture Eater with as “a horrible jury-rigging of Ethnographic writing and Ekphrasis to describe the thing as it happens.”

This review is the first attempt of that approach. This was written over two listening sessions, though there was plenty of listening outside of those. I did some editing for clarity and there were a few sentences that arose from my usual approach.

Ideally I’d like to find some sort of balance between how I usually write and this approach / “style”, but much like drawing, photography, music and other ventures it’s always a process of growing and development. Maybe this will lead to something further away from my current approach.

I think that compared to many of my previous reviews I did a better job of capturing an idea of how the album sounds. Not entirely sure, but I am satisfied with the result.

I’m also satisfied that altogether writing and editing this review took somewhere around two or three hours. Recently the reviews I’ve been writing have taken much longer; the last taking close to twenty hours.

Upsilamba starts off simply. It’s a lot of light, pleasing clarinet. There’s a bit of percussive clatter and noise; both of which disappear, leaving the clarinet to keep on doing its thing which by this point is a bit more energised. There’s a thumping drum beat that holds a bit of fun and whimsy.

Suddenly the clarinet gains context. The music rages. It roars and explodes into a massive cacophony… which eventually pulls back to reveal something clearer and less overwhelming. It’s a shift to something calmer, but by this point it offers little relief.

Simple guitar strums echo out into the emptiness whilst the clarinet relaxes. The percussion resumes its position of whimsy until the part’s end.

“Interlude” continues the simple guitar playing and it continues the echoing out. On its own it feels uneasy, but there’s a bit more breathing space and a bit more time to unwind, which is very much needed.

“Part II” offers the most human moments of Upsilamba. It starts off droning melodically and soon, with careful, firm tone a number recital commences. Distorted sound finds its way in, looking for some sort of prominence or reshaping. The clarinet returns, fluttering around. The number recital continues, becoming more frenzied and unintelligible the longer it goes. The percussion returns; as the melody retreats, the percussion’s intensity increases. The part keeps on filling out and expanding. It just keeps on going.

Suddenly the noise pulls back and guitar rings out once more, though it also oscillates. A simple-sounding drum beat kicks in. It all seems kind of worrisome and melancholic. The notes keep on ringing and building until eventually something more distorted and menacing finds its way back. The drums stay “steady”. As everything seems to descend the mass of distorted sound takes over, though it too ends up leaving so as to let something more clear bring the part to a close.

“Part III” is kind of… well, dramatic is a good way of putting it. It starts off dramatic, at least. Single notes, space, no crushing oppression, but this doesn’t last long. “Lightning” cracks in the background. Impassioned, shouted vocals come in. They are… unnerving, to say the least. Really uncomfortable. Eventually the high noise meets with something approximating a bass sound. It too drones on. Light percussion appears and clarinet flutters about for a fleeting period, percussion rings to a beat, the music briefly stutters before the beat becomes steady and obviously rhythmic.. The drones keep on droning, the music races toward some sort of point far beyond reach… at least for a little while.

The beat, whilst steady, needs to eventually drop out. The drone so enduring and prominent shifts and pulses whilst the vocals now scream over them. Indistinct sounds and the clarinet seems to be racing all over itself. The drone pulses, throbs and heaves whilst the screaming becomes more and more intense. Sounds rise and fall and the vocals now sound tired. There is a gasping for air as they continue on, almost as though they’re unable to stop.

There’s a brief moment of breathing space before the part starts expanding and ramping up once more. It comes close to exploding, but instead suddenly dissipates, leaving a low, pulsing sound to linger at the song’s edge.

Whilst “Part II” offers Upsilamba‘s most human moments, the whole thing offers a highly human experience. As a whole, the album seems to grip onto something deep inside. It’s an intense, visceral record that isn’t afraid to be unpleasant and uncomfortable. It’s also expansive, majestic and beautiful.

Upsilamba is available here.

Bending Away

Taken somewhere past The Blue Mountains.

I find this photo pleasant enough but I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the curve, or the different textures.

Maybe it’s its simple scenery.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 646: Only Waiting

And so the day drags on like the knuckles against the ground, but instead of scraping the skin away and causing more harm than good on a physical level, this is just a drag that seems to stretch out for far longer than anticipated. The moment becomes all too real and you’re very much alive and living in it. Still, it can only drag on for so long, regardless of how long it might seem like it will drag for. An eternity is a really long time, but this is no eternity. It just might feel as such; at least, for a little while anyway. Eventually time might start losing all meaning as you sit there and stare off into the void of numbers and words that mean less and less the more you look at them.

Once they did have meaning, but they eventually unfurled and revealed themselves as being devoid of such things. Utterly meaningless and utterly absurd.

All there is left to do is stare and wait and hope, but of course hoping isn’t getting much done so instead the day drags on and you’re left there sitting and waiting to get out of it all so that you can get back to doing the things you need to do and get back to enjoying your day and taking it easy, but there is no easy to take as there is too much happening at all times. Or is there?

There is always a lot so you pull things out of what is floating around you and you work on those, but those are happening now and you’re still required to keep your attention firmly on what is in front of you as even though working on stuff helps, it doesn’t make the time go by any faster and that’s what you’d rather have happen. You want to be productive as it keeps your mind healthy and operational, but instead you’d much rather just stare off into space as that seems like something more productive. It feels as though it’s a more conducive use of your time. Perhaps it’s been a little too long spent dragging the knuckles and not enouh time trying to figure things out that would help get through the tedium of trying to get to the end of something that stretches far beyond that which you’ve experienced in the past. One of those days as they say.

Maybe it really isn’t one of those days. Maybe it’s just one of those things instead. Sometimes you have to live an eternity to appreciate the time you have, but this is of course an impractical use of anyone’s time. At least, that is what you tell yourself. Still, you can’t get away from it for some reason. You’re not drawn into what it is that you’re doing. Images are all indistinct after a while and they too lose their meaning. You just want to get to the end of the day, but there’s only waiting.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:52:04

On lunch break so I decided to write.
