Internal Structure

A shot taken last year.

Whilst no longer in its intended use, it’s apparent that this building still sees frequent visitors.

I like the geometry of shot, as well as the lighting.

I think there’s a sense of good design as well as the sense of dilapidation.

There’s also a sense of the area being repurposed by people visiting over time.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s TPM photo challenge for this week.

The theme for this challenge is “Architectural Details”.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

I hope you enjoy.

Rest Area at Night

A shot taken almost two years ago whilst at Smiths Lake.

Not sure as to why I didn’t share this shot at the time. Maybe it’s due to not being one of the better shots I took during that field trip. I feel that compared to the others, this shot is average at best.

The current camera body I have was still quite new at the time and I was in a process of learning and unlearning, though realistically that’s always the case when you’re taking photos, I think.

I do like the lighting as it gives a sense of solitude within a small space.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s TPM photo challenge from last week.

The theme for this challenge is “Small old Buildings”.

Part of this rest area is a building which is why I’ve included the shot.
Well, that and the building I tried to capture for the challenge… the shots of it didn’t turn out as well as I thought they would.

I think that, whilst this doesn’t leave too much room for creative thinking, this theme is good as it promotes exploration.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

I hope you enjoy.

Bare Island Bridge

The bridge to Bare Island as seen from Bare Island.

I think this shot gives a bit of an idea of the bridge’s length (it’s not too long), but if I had taken this shot from a few more metres away and angled it a bit differently, then the bridge’s length would likely have been more apparent. I think.

I feel as though the contrast between the lighter and darker areas might be a bit too strong. It might be due to the amount of sky. Not sure. That said, I do like the amount of space afforded by the sky as it kind of makes this scene feel as though it exists in its own pocket in space.

This is also my submission into the eighty-sixth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Change Your Perspective“.

The expected shot of a bridge over water is from directly under one side of the bridge and across to the other. I’m fairly certain I’ve shared shots of that here.

This is kind of different, though it’s still probably an expected form of shooting a bridge, now that I think about it.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is hosted by Patti. The next will be guest hosted by Miriam Hurdle of The Showers of Blessings.

I recommend giving the challenges a go and seeing how you interpret each theme. I also recommend checking out what other people are doing to meet the challenges.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 628: Rambling in the Morning

I was going to start this off with something that probably made little, or maybe a lot of sense, but instead of doing that I’m going to start this off with a sentence that might not be similar to the ones that usually start off this ramblings. It’s a bit difficult to tell at this hour of the morning. Might have to wait to the next hour. Not sure yet. Not sure of a lot of things. OF course, this is one of those things of which I am not sure.

What I am sure of is that I have my COFFEE ready to go, though it is mostly done at this point. It is past the halfway point in the mug of which I am currently using as a receptacle for the COFFEE as this liquid is one that is in the process of being drunk due to my drinking it so that it enters my body and does what it does so that I am more awake and active.

On a slight side note, I do find that, when on field trips that require waking up early, black coffee is a utilitarian drug due to how quickly it can get you awake. That said, I’ve generally not needed it on field trips, but it certainly has been helpful, but I digress.

So anyway, I’m awake, the COFFEE is great and doing its job and now I’m getting ready (well, after the writing of this) to head out and conquer the day. There is a lot of learning on the horizon and I’m gonna need to tackle some things of the involving of the first aid. However, there is a chance that I’ll have my camera with me and might just take a scenic route to the place of learning so that I can take advantage of the scenery with my clickety-click and hope for the best whilst the weather looks threatening but never acts.

Maybe it will act. I don’t know. Who am I to say? All there is is this right now and the day ahead is yet to be formed, for I need to be there to form it, or something. Don’t know where I was going with this.

Once I stretch my legs out and let them move along and unfurl, continually stretching, I will need to follow their lead in the hopes that they take me somewhere where I need to be. Maybe they won’t and instead I will spend the day looking over the sunrise in the hopes that the ocean provides that which I want which is something to look over whilst being moody due to the all-encompassing mass of the ocean’s glorious body surrounding everything, despite my only being able to see part of its consumption.

Maybe that won’t happen and instead I’ll be engulfed by cockatoos as they pass through the gardens on their loud journeys of screeching and flapping. It would be a real hoot but also pretty loud.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:30:99

Wonderfully stupid and that makes me happy.

Written at home.

Burwood Station Under Smoke’s Light

Another shot taken at a train station. There might be a few of these coming; not sure at the moment.

This was taken last year in November when the bushfires were really taking off.

Its effects led to the eerie colour bathing the area. It seems like a sunset, but I think that if you look and think about the image long enough, it becomes apparent that this wasn’t during the sunset at all.

Whilst some still burn, most fires are now out due to heavy rain and the continued efforts of those who worked to stop the fires however they can. We were really fortunate this time around.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Cosmic Psychos: Loudmouth Soup Review

Still not feeling much like writing at the moment. Instead here’s the other review of a Cosmic Psychos album I wrote for Cool Try.

I think it’s good to have this one shared now as it makes for a better comparison regarding how my writing “skills” had developed up until the point where this was published which was some time in 2018 and the review for Cum the Raw Prawn was published in 2015.

Maybe it would be better if there were a few reviews shown in their sequential publishing order, but this is on the same artist, so… yeah.

There’s definitely been an improvement though also a slight decline. This review seems to be more articulate and concise. However, I feel as though it’s too brief and clinical. I can see a few sentences that could’ve become paragraphs.

At the time I think I was working with more active voice and having the sentences make more sense. I’m fairly certain I was spending more time reading them out aloud to find mistakes. Can’t quite remember.

This is shown as it was. There was no need for cleaning up spelling mistakes or separating paragraphs.

Now for the part where I plug other stuff:

Most of my review and interview work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going. At the moment it comes out fortnightly, though we are looking to go weekly. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Cosmic Psychos have done the album thing again and this time the album is titled Loudmouth Soup. Whilst there aren’t songs about being loud, mouths (depending on your interpretation of the term), or soup (again, depending on your interpretation of the term), there is at least one song about loudmouth soup.

Lyrics about drinking beer, feeling average, shit riffs, being in shit and a slew of other issues are found throughout the record. They’re not pretentious, profound, deeply meaningful or too clever but for the most part a lot of the lyrics are direct and relatable.

The songs themselves are a leaning a bit more toward punk than they are rock, but overall Loudmouth Soup is a little more poppy. That’s not to say that Cosmic Psychos don’t rock out at any point as there’s still a fair bit of that. However, there is a little bit more singing, a little less groove and a little more melody. There’s also the use of opening a beer can as a percussive element on one song which works better than it should.

Loudmouth Soup sounds like Cosmic Psychos which is consistent, but the mixing of the record is a little odd. At times the vocals are much louder than the instruments, reverb sees a bit more use than on prior releases and there’s less low end and more fuzz on the bass. At times it sounds like the fuzz of the bass is sitting right next to the guitar.

With that being said the mix is a little drier and it helps highlight how well Cosmic Psychos can pull off sounding really loose and sludgy whilst conversely sounding really concise and clear.

It’s hard to fault Cosmic Psychos for doing something that doesn’t stray far from their past. They know what they do well and do it well they still do. Whilst not as strong as past releases, the album is consistently decent. If you’ve heard Cosmic Psychos before, then you know what you’re going to get if you listen to Loudmouth Soup; an enjoyable romp that is really direct and free of pretension.

Partially Wet

I’m pretty sure the reason as to why I took this shot is due to liking the contrast between the levels of light, as well as the platform surface being partially dry and wet.

I think the contrast is great with this one. I think it works quite well.

I don’t really have much else to say other than I like this image overall.

I hope you enjoy.

Cosmic Psychos: Cum the Raw Prawn Review

So today I attempted to write something, but I let my financial woes get in the way.

Instead, here’s the first review I wrote for Cool Try.

I thought I’d already shared this, but it currently appears as though I was incorrect in that thought.

So this is pretty rough. It had been a while since I had written a review of anything. Aside from covering the album, I really don’t know what I was trying to do. In hindsight I don’t think the beer head metaphor was a good choice.

I fixed a spelling mistake, but otherwise this is as it was.

On a side note, “Don’t come the raw prawn” is an interesting bit of slang, but I won’t get into that now.

Cosmic Psychos have released a new album.
For a band that has both been around for a while and are Australian, that is not something to scoff at.
Is it any good though?
Well…

From the opening groove of “Better, not Bitter” to the closing lyrics of “Didn’t Wanna Love Me”, the fuzzed-out songs cycle between loose rockers and tight punk whilst drunken-sounding vocals and rants sit atop the music like a good head on a beer.

The musicianship is excellent.
All the instruments sit next to each other nicely and there’s a lot of passion in the playing.

Lyrically, most of the album is a bit like the conversations you have with friends as you drink throughout the night. As far as I’m aware, they’re not overly serious (when you hear lines like “Your sheep are hairy/they should be shorn” it can be hard to tell) but there’s a lot that can be related to whilst still being enjoyable.

I find it difficult to say much about this album as it’s very much no-frills.
It’s all incredibly straightforward and direct, but this is a good thing.
The album is quite fun and it’s hard to imagine anything other than enjoyment if you put this on at a party.

If you’re looking for something with subtle nuances and deep introspection, then you’re going to be disappointed.
If you’re looking for an album that hits like a slab in the face and gives you a good time, then Cum The Raw Prawn is going to be right up your alley.

Extinguishers

This was taken in the same area as the last shot.

I think I did a better job of framing with this one.
I think it’s less flat and more interesting.

Unfortunately I can’t lay claim to the positioning of the extinguishers, though I wish I could. The way they sit gives a slight sense of depth that I appreciate.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 35: Special Wednesday

Well, it’s that time of year once more. It’s that time of year that I dread as it signifies the passing of time in a way that is more signifying than any other day.

Actually, I don’t dread this particular time of year for that reason. It’s more that… well, I don’t dread it at all, now that I think about it. It’s more that I care and not care at the same time about this signification of the moving of the forward rather than the regression of the everything. That said, some things may regress. It’s hard to tell. Realistically a single bit of something in the grand scheme of things might signify the ticking over of some things, but the passage is always gradual and constant. Maybe it’s fast and constant. Things change at a steady pace. They don’t suddenly shift over in one particular moment, though some things do, which is both what I am and am not talking about right now.

Yes, it is currently that magical time of the year where I make a slight acknowledgement and then go back to doing whatever it was that I was doing: The last Wednesday of the month.

This Wednesday is very special for a myriad of reasons, of which I won’t really go into detail about as it would take up too much time and time is not necessarily what I have a lot of right now as there are plenty of things that I need to get done before the day’s end and so this bit of writing is merely a stop along the way of the process of getting things done. I’m also racing my need to go to the bathroom but that might be a bit of a silly thing. Still, I do plenty of silly things and so I’ll just keep on going with this and see how far I get before the inevitable responsibility takes over and I head off to other horizons.

Anyway, where way I? So this Wednesday, of which the day is today is special due to it being the last Wednesday of February. It is special for many reasons. They can;t all be listed. Yes, I know I’ve already covered that, but it needs to be reinforced.

Wait; they can all be listed, but it would take far too much time. How will you spend this day?

I know that I’m spending it listening to Pat Metheney’s latest record (From This Place). There will be a writing of a review of it, but I’ll cut to the chase and let you know what it’s like right now:

As the kids say, it’s a “banger” that “slaps”. Is that meant to be a slapping banger, or a banging slap? Or is it something that bangs as it slaps, or slaps as it bangs? I’m really not sure. I don’t think I’ve had enough coffee to understand youth culture. I don’t think I’ve had enough anything to understand youth culture right now. I don’t think I’ve ever understood youth culture. Probably the beauty of living under a rock, but it also comes with certain levels of detriment to my being, depending on how you view the act of living under a rock and being removed from what you’re meant to represent and how you’re meant to act, though realistically I don’t know if I am or am not. It just kind of feels that way, but realistically I’m probably not too far removed at all.

But anyway, this is a good record, but I’ll write about it some time in the future. Might take a lot of unpacking. Might not be able to unpack it at all. That’s going to be something I’ll have to see about.

Anyway, on this particular Wednesday there will be the writing. There will be procrastination, and perhaps there will be tears. It will be warm. I need to water my plants at some stage. That’s probably something I should do sooner rather than later. They’ve been so good to me, so the least I can do is assist with their continual survival.

Unfortunately the cucumber plants were lost to the stormy weather we’ve had, but I can always try with them again.

Well, I think I’ve reached my limit with what I can say at this point, so now I’ll try and describe some scenery.

It’s outside. You’re standing somewhere that gives a wide view of the low-lying land. It all seems so small and, due to particles in the atmosphere, seems to fade out the farther toward the horizon you look.

You’re somewhere up high and everything seems so massive. There’s little that is green, but greenery certainly is there. Patches of development appear close by. They refuse to congregate until they get closer to the ocean, of which still dwarfs everything without even trying.

Other than the sound of insects and other fauna, you’re only visited by the sound of the breeze moving around you.

It’s a lovely scene to some and not to others. It stands as a strong reminder of how small and insignificant we are, and yet how much of an impact we can have. It reminds us of how much more responsible we need to be, or the beauty of nature, or just the wonderment of being able to be reminded of how small we are so easily.

Well, instead of that I’m looking at a small computer in a room that’s not quite dark and not quite light. I’d rather be out there, seeing that scene, but this is fine for now. I can do a journey on another day.

So today I celebrate my birthday typing furiously whilst sitting in my underpants in the hopes that Ir each some sort of breakthrough and touch the hearts of many with my rough, clunky writing.

It is going to be a day, that’s for sure. What kind of day is yet to be seen, but a day nonetheless.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 15:34:92

There was little pausing as I wrote this. As always, this could be much better.

I think a while ago I was getting a bit smoother and more interesting with the writing but I seemed to have veered away from that and gone back to being far less smooth.

I feel like I’m doing rough sketches a lot of the time and I think this writing has that come through a bit more than I’d expect. At the same time, it does have some smooth moments that, whilst needing work, are easier to read.

Ultimately I’m satisfied with what came out. Could be better, could be more abstract / impressionistic, et cetera, but to me it feels grounded in a way that I think works.

Written at home.
