One Thousand Word Challenge 33: Suburban Days 4

And it was indeed a deep sleep from which he awoke. Sore his head was, but not pounding. Still tired, but more alert. No more feeling of giving up on the day, but certainly the feeling of not wanting to repeat the prior night’s actions remained strong.

Feeling a strange weight on his feet, he looked at them and noticed that his shoes were on, rather than off. He wasn’t sure as to why he went to bed with them, but he did remember walking to the shops barefoot. He moved to take the shoes off quickly and have a look for anything that may have embedded itself in his feet.

There didn’t seem to be much other than a few small shards of glass. Nothing penetrated too deep. Nothing was difficult to remove. Some disinfectant was applied, then the small cuts were carefully wrapped. His feet were going to hurt for a few days, but the cuts were going to contribute the least to that pain.

He checked the time to see for how long he’d been asleep. It appeared as though it hadn’t been too long at all. Maybe three hours. It was still before midday, which meant there still was a fair bit of the day to go before sleeping through the night. He wasn’t exactly thrilled with this, but it was better to not try and sleep again for now, lest he spend the night awake. That certainly was something he’d much have preferred to avoid. There was still things that needed to be done on the following day and those would require a better rest.

However, that was all in the future. His throat and body felt dry. He needed water. He needed something for the headache. He needed to take it easy, but he needed to get up once more and satiate his need for hydration.

And so steadily from the bed once more he rose. His feet were hurting as they felt as though the memory of walking over all the surfaces from earlier in the morning had manifested themselves at once. Still, walking was easy enough. It could have been much worse. It always could have been much worse.

Out his room and toward the bathroom he went, but of course the bathroom door was shut. A slight turn and to the kitchen, which, whilst felt like an eternity to walk to, took far less time to reach.

On went one of the taps and the process of cupping water to bring to his mouth commenced for as long as necessary. Of course this too seemed like it took an eternity, but of course it was a much more satisfactory one.

It was a slight refreshment. He thought that perhaps he went a little overboard and it may have been better to sip from a glass rather than try and flood every cell of his body.

He felt a need to sit down. The living room seemed a little too bright and dry, so instead he walked through the laundry, opened the back door and sat on the rear steps. It was a bit better shaded and more ideal, in case he gained the sudden urge to go to the toilet to purge.

It was an old house in which he lived. The toilet was outside, though it was built into the house. The only way to access it was to go out the back and walk a couple of metres to where it sat, right within one of the rear corners of the house itself.

In the morning it could be rather lovely. Often the backyard was overgrown and so, assuming that no one else was awake, he’d sometimes have the toilet door open as the scenery would make it feel like being in the bush rather than suburbia.

It was pleasant when it rained too. It was a safe spot due to how the house’s canopy covered the walkway, though sometimes you’d get wet on the way to the toilet.

He sat there for a while, in the shade, waiting for the warmth of the day to pass, but it would not for a while and he would not sit there the whole day; after all, there still were things that needed to be done, or at least he hoped that there were. Truthfully there were just menial tasks. Food still needed to be put away instead of left sitting in his bedroom. A bit of cleaning. Perhaps the removal and throwing out of stuff no longer being used. Only a few things.

Whilst sitting there for a bit, NAME, his housemate stepped around him and went to the edge of where the grass met the concreted path to the toilet. Leaning against one of the poles whilst staring out, he lit up, took a drag, then turned around and offered to him. For the time being he refused; he didn’t feel like it would be a good idea. Had he been in a different state, he probably would have accepted the offer.

“What’s the time?

It’s close to twelve.

This morning’s going on for far longer than it should.

A lot happens in a short period of time. Surprised you’re awake, to be honest.

So am I.

You okay?

Why wouldn’t I be?

A myriad of reasons; probably the most pressing being getting dumped.

It happens.

Well, you’re taking it well. Maybe the hangover is helping.

I’m not hungover. Just really tired.

Is that so?

Yes, and that is what I’m sticking to.”

Truthfully the hangover had kicked in, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Maybe it was helping with the despondency of getting dumped, but he didn’t care. What he cared about the most at that point in time was getting through the day and getting off the hangover. It would go, but there was the chance that it would be replaced with far more questions and pain, but that too would eventually pass.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 21:04:33

A continuation of this.
Part two is here.
Part one is here.

I feel that this didn’t need as much time as it took. I think I paused a little too much.

I also think I thought too much.

Not enough writing in recent times either.

Not sure as to what I’m looking to express. Perhaps the banality of suburban living. Maybe something more mundane.

Guitarist and Guitar

Here’s a photo of a guitarist playing guitar.

The guitarist just so happened to be on stage whilst playing their guitar.

I want to try and argue that this image is about shape and form more than it is about performance, but that’s about as far as I can argue that line of thinking right now.

Admittedly I want to try and argue that due to my liking of the shape and form of the guitarist with their guitar. This is an image of a guitarist that I’m not used to seeing.

I think that, at the very least it’s an interesting image.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Train Windows

Here’s a photo of windows as found on the carriage of a train, as well as the exterior surface that comprises part of the carriage of the train of which these windows are a part.

I feel as though this photo being in monochrome brings out a bit of the dirt on the carriage’s exterior. I also feel as though it enhances the patterns formed by the orderly positioning of the windows, as well as the raised lines both on either side and in between the windows.

I’m not sure why, but the surface of the lines in between the windows seems smoother to me than any of the other surfaces.

This is my submission into the seventy-ninth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Window With A View“.

I feel that this photo applies due to a large variety of scenes available when looking out the window of a train carriage at various points during a journey.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is hosted by Amy. The next will be hosted by Tina.

I recommend checking out the challenge to see how people interpret each theme.
I also recommend giving it a go.

I hope you enjoy.

Band Gear

A shot that I wasn’t planning on using, but it fits with Leanne Cole‘s The Photographer’s Mentor photo challenge for this week and I like it, so yeah.

Sometimes when I’m shooting a gig, between sets I’ll take a shot of something on the stage either to check if the settings for the camera will work for the next band (often they don’t and I end up changing the settings anyway), or if I think something on the stage will make for an interesting image.

I’m not entirely sure as to what it is that makes this image appealing to me. Perhaps it is the positioning, the textures, the lighting. Perhaps it’s a combination of those, or perhaps it is something else entirely.

I do think I could have framed things a bit better, but overall I’m happy with the shot.

The theme for this week is “Still Life”.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 617: Worry About

Well, once more I find myself at work. There is a banana to my left and a coffee to my right and I’m wondering as to how I can combine the two in order to make some sort of super drink with powerful sensations. I’m really not sure as to how I can do this, but I’m sure that there is a way.

However, there are more important things to worry about at this time and juncture in time. There are things such as the ability to do the job without getting into trouble, and the ability to find another job which of course has to be done on my own time, and realistically that’s fine as I’d rather do it on my own time than on the time of someone else.

Anyway, there are more important things to worry about than that, such as the fires that seem to be abating ever-so-slightly, as well as the current state of both local and global politics. This truly is a trying time in which to be alive and there needs to be a way out found sooner rather than later.

However, there are likely other things out there that also need to be worried about to some extent,. but that is not what this bit of writing is going to be about today. No, instead this is going to be about whatever comes to mind and I will get it down on the paper, although as this is not really paper, it will be implied to be paper when it really is a bunch of keys being pressed to trigger interpretations of what those keys mean so that programming can produce them on a screen that will then display said pressings of the key so as to produce something that is able to be read by some, or none, or all. Not sure as to which yet, but I’m sure that I will work it out one day, assuming that I can be bothered to try and work it out one day. It may take two days, but I’m really not sure about that at the moment.

What I am sure about is that in a few minutes I will be commencing the beginning of the day of work. It will be a short shift and a stressful one; not due to customers, but due to the fact that these few weeks of the past have been rather trying, as we are getting few hours and are lacking the funds to be able to get through to the end of the month. There may be some spacing out eating. Not sure yet. Will have to see.

Still, I consider myself lucky in that I still have a roof over my head, but that won’t matter much if I can’t afford to pay rent, which is just about the only thing that I can afford at the present time.

I guess we’ll have to see what happens over the next few weeks.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 04:58:08

A rather trying time and this is the result of rambling about stuff potentially related to said trying time.

Written at work.

Have a Nice Life: Sea of Worry Review

This is another review that took too long to write, though it needs to be said that it was written over a much shorter time span than the one for A Dawn to Fear.

I thought that I was going to write something a bit more expansive, but these never seem to turn out the way I think they will.

Oh well.

Most of my review and interview work is now on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. One of the things we’ve set up is a podcast with each episode coming out fortnightly to every three weeks. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Somewhat-recently Have a Nice Life released Sea of Worry, which is an album title that succinctly encompasses the album’s mood. There’s a strong sense of anxiety in the songs that doesn’t let up; not even in the more upbeat-sounding songs. Whilst this doesn’t make for the happiest-sounding album, it avoids diving headlong into misery. Sea of Worry is more about expressing its unease than it is about overwhelming the listener, and it does so in a couple of ways.

Due to a great deal of reverb, Sea of Worry has a roomy, distant sound. The reverb makes a lot of the lyrics ambiguous, leading to the sound of the delivery becoming more prominent. What lyrics are clear strongly suggest unease; those that aren’t still suggest through their sound rather than their words.

Often the songs are cold, jagged and noisy with an undercurrent of urgency running through them. There are times when the the sound lets up a little, but it never fully does and instead seems to lurk at the edges of the calmer songs. That said, there’s also a feeling of comfort that comes through, albeit in a more minor capacity.

There’s a surface disconnection between some of the songs, but upon repeat listens it’s easy to see how the rock of “Tresspassers W” fits in between the poppy, synth-driven “Science Beat” and the ambient “Everything we Forget”. “Sea of Worry” and “Dracula Bells” are probably the most familiar with each other, but also link smoothly with “Science Beat” in that they seem to inhabit a similar world, so to speak.

“Lords of Tresserhorn” is similar to “Tresspassers W” by recontextualising the rhythmic pattern into a form of catharsis. “Destinos” follows as a dramatic closer that uses its noisier elements to give it a more massive sound.

Normally music that sounds dramatic or highly emotive takes a lot to pull off. It often requires a lot of work; something that many bands don’t seem to realise. Sea of Worry sounds like Have a Nice Life put a lot of work into it and it pays off. There are some issues, such as the album at times coming really close to sounding like artists from prior decades as well as some sections wearing out their welcome, but otherwise the songs are worth the time.

There’s a certain something about Have a Nice Life’s music that, whilst difficult to describe, is part of what makes what they do work. However, that doesn’t feel like it says much.

A better way of putting it is that with Sea of Worry is a moving record.

Sea of Worry is available here.

The Cooks River Under a Smoke-Filled Sky

This was taken in late November. It was a day not too long after the bushfires gained greater awareness.

I think this photo works best as a contrast to this one.

I think that in this photo the sky looks dirty, which probably has a lot to do with the smoke in the air.

The scene is kind of pretty, but also uncomfortable and ominous.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s photo challenge for last week.

The theme for this one is “Weather”.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

Brennan Park

I’ve been sitting down thinking about getting this photo up for most of the day, but if I don’t do this now then the rest of the day will be spent thinking about getting this photo up and that’s a bit of a dilemma that I’d rather not find myself handling.

Here’s a photo of Brennan Park (or, at least part of it) as taken from Brennan Park (or, at least part of it).

I like how the shadows sit upon the open field and contrast with the sunlight.

I also like how the field contrasts with the various trees obscuring part of the area. I think it gives an open / closed kind of feel.

This is my submission into the seventy-eighth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Special Spot Shots“.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 616: Doing Something Else

A lengthy day spent doing little to nothing other than sitting here, coating the seat in sweat and trying my best to not stick to it, though it seems as though that is a difficult thing to do as the seat most definitely seems like it wants to fuse to me, and who am I to argue against this prospect? I’m just one person among a sea of many and it is not my place to tell the seat what it can and cannot stick to, unless it truly is my place, in which I need to exercise this right.

That all said, I’d much rather be doing something else, but I lack the motivation and the energy to get up and get onto taking care of things. This is one of those situations where I need to start forcing myself to do things so that I get things out of the way and can therefore move onto other things to do. However, there are just far too many things for me to do and I don’t have the time I would hope I would have… except I do and I’m being far lazier than I should.

This is how it goes sometimes, and I really need to pull my finger out and get to doing things. If I’m even just a little more proactive, I can probably get a lot more done and therefore clear out the queue that keeps on building up. Now that would be a joyous thing, but I think I might also be a little burnt out. I think the overdoing of the things during last year may have taken its toll and now I’m sort of paying for it. I need rest.

Actually, it’s not rest that I need. It’s a good sleep to get rid of the lack of sleep which would allow me to something or something else. I also need to stop procrastinating so much. Reducing that would help.

Perhaps if I sweat even more, I’ll break down to my constituent elements and be able to get away from this situation by moving somewhere else. I could move to somewhere I thought I wouldn’t be able to go as I would no longer be a solid human. There would be things I could see and things that I could do, but then again I’d rather not as that doesn’t solve the situation at hand. There are other things I’d rather do than turn into some sort of something else.

I’d much rather be writing and working on photography than sitting here doing nothing, but nothing is dominating for the time being. However, I imagine that, so long as I can start actively working, then I can pull out of the nothing and start working on something instead, which would lead to the building of good habits.

However, there is the chance that that would not be the case. It could lead to more bad habits.

Only one way to find out.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:13:47

Not enough sleep. Not enough self-motivation.

Harder to write than expected. Wrist still not 100%.

Need sleep.

Written at home.

Wolves in the Throne Room

Sans the drummer. There were a few shots of him, but they didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped. There was a lot of smoke during WitTR’s set and I’m not overly familiar with working with smoke.

This is a shot I took for Culture Eater. I’m quite happy with how this one turned out.

I think that there’s a good sense of depth, as well as a sense of action.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.
