Five-Hundred Word Challenge 50: Light Pollution

I remember, as a child (and up until almost reaching adulthood), looking up into the sky many times and seeing a lot of bright stars.
I can remember enjoying it as it was a beautiful sight that I think I appreciated.

On Saturday night, Ewe and I made our way to a wharf near where we live.
I looked up to the sky and saw that it was bright, but there were no stars to see.
The sky was far too bright for the hour it was.
I found this to be incredibly saddening as seeing stars was something I remembered well, but now it seemed to be something that was rare.

In Sydney, when you do see stars, depending on where you are, you will only see a few.
Light pollution is something that has subconsciously become something accepted as normal, despite how abnormal and unnatural it is.
In the city, we’ve conditioned ourselves to accept something that we should be rejecting and working to fight against.

It can have detrimental effects not only to our own health, but also to various animals that operate based on light and dark levels.

Earth Hour encourages people to switch lights off for a one hour period each year.
There are many reasons as to why it’s done (as far as I’m aware, reduction of light pollution is one of them), but I don’t think that once a year is enough.

If more people were to switch off their lights more often and work on encouraging others to do the same, the night sky would gradually appear the way it is meant to again; dark, with numerous stars lighting it up.

There are still plenty of places in the world not affected by light pollution, but there’s nothing to say that it should be different for cities as well.

We shouldn’t have to get out of the cities just to be able to soak in the impressive light show that we already had available to us.

It shouldn’t be an oddity.

Through the years, being able to see the night sky in less populous areas has become part of what has made it so much more appreciable to me.

It is an amazing view that can remind you of how small you really are and how lucky you are to be able to witness such a thing.

I find myself wondering if light pollution will become so abundant that, many years from now, there will be a generation that, when they see stars in the night sky, will consider it some sort of strange phenomenon instead of something they used to see far more often than they do now.

In fiction, when stars go out, it’s (usually) a sign that something very bad is going to happen.
Obviously that’s a very extreme example to use as a comparison, especially without much information provided.

But still, in the cities, the stars are going out.

Regardless of severity, we should consider it a sign.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 18:04:84

Took longer as I was thinking too much about what I was saying.
I feel this comes across a bit more like scaremongering than anything else; something that was not my intent.

Oh well.

Clouds at 富士山 (Mount Fuji)

These were taken during the descent of 富士山.

Whilst I was hoping for clear skies, the clouds really made the view for me.

I think that these are really mysterious shots, due to how the clouds are only letting a small bit of land through, whilst obscuring everything else.

I’ve included the last one here as the others don’t quite show just how big everything was.
I think it does a good job of that.

The monochrome photo was my twenty-eighth submission for Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I hope you enjoy.

Tracks

Here is a photo of the tracks a train uses to reach a destination that only it can know.

Something something something something.

I took this one whilst wandering around 尾道市 (Onomichi).

I like how “lined up” almost everything looks in this photo.

I also like (and dislike) how there are houses right next to the tracks.

As it was overcast at the time, the sky looks to be very flat in its appearance, making everything else stand out a lot more.

I think.

This was the twenty-seventh photo I used for Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 49: Here we sit

Here we sit, on the volcanic layers forming a cake of crust and stone, burning our desires into shapes that we cannot choose to muster if we were so forever able to try, as we are but mere mortals, shaking within ourselves and shouting at the heavens for cursing us to be within feeble bodies that we may shape, but never change into something far greater than the sums of ourselves.

Here we sit, on the volcanic layers warming our hearts, upon oceans of desires that have been cast aside as we have allowed ourselves to break into tiny smithereens of former adolescents, forever allowing ourselves the chance to give up, far more than we ever should have.

Here we sit, unknowing where we are going far more than we should ever let on, clawing at the sun until the night sky approaches and gives us the stars we so desperately crave to see, awaiting the eruption that shall heat our bodies far beyond what we could ever expect them to reach.

Here we sit, wondering as to why we are, never wondering what we should do next, burrowing into the very land that we would like to see with open eyes on a day that would allow the clouds to form and reform endlessly upon the canvass of the sky, creating images of old that are always new to us, for we are but children that will always see wonder and innocence around us if we so choose to see those things.

Here we sit, falling into a mind full of possibilities that we cannot see, as we can only follow so many, unless we allow our thoughts the opportunity to wander through the winds that carry them along, erratically but always to a destination that only our thoughts can know.

Here we sit, feeling through a cold that cannot be explained, ringing comfort to us as we keep our heads glued to the sand of the mountain that has been ground down slowly in an inevitable process that only nature can fully understand, for whilst we have informed notions, we have chosen to examine instead of become the mountain and the wind that erodes it.

Here we sit, ready to dance until we can dance no more as we choose to forego the ability and move towards a new horizon, looking at what is around us and instead of being up on a high, lofty peak that has us seeing everything from above, choosing to go down and be among all that we see, giving us a sense of relation and understanding that had been left to all that had chosen to be with everything else instead of choosing to ascend ahead of everything and then stand on the top whilst cursing the fates that we had brought upon ourselves, not accepting responsibility for our own actions that put us there.

Here we sit, feeling our way to unknown things that will still be better for our lives.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:26:60

A bit faster than the last one.
I’m not sure as to what to make of this bit of text.
I started writing this as a stream of consciousness narrative.
Then somewhere into it, I decided to try and make it consistent… I think.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 48: Going for a Swim

It may have been a Saturday, but it was still a time that required an early start.

They made their way to the beach.

They would have gone on Friday, but it had been too hot and it would have been far too crowded.

They decided to go early on Saturday morning to try and beat the crowds and have more space.

It was certainly a colder day, but they didn’t care.

They wanted to swim as it was, for them, overdue.

It didn’t take too long to get to where they needed to. The light rail made sure of that.

They walked to their bus stop and, with little waiting, the bus was there, taking them to the sand they so wanted to see.

The day looked unpleasant, but it was not a deterrent, as their desire to swim outweighed their desire to be inside.

Soon enough they were at the beach.

They casually made their way down to the sand.
After taking their shoes off, they noticed how cool it felt to the touch.

It was certainly preferred over how burning it would have been during the previous day.

They walked for a few minutes, locating the swimming flags with little issue.

The wind was cool on their skin as they prepared to head to the water.

Sunscreen was there, but they decided against using it. It probably would have been better if they had, but they did not care.

They just wanted to get into the water and enjoy it for all they could.

Once they were ready, they ran.

They headed straight for the ocean, each step bringing them closer to what they were after.

It looked cold, but they didn’t care.

Once they reached the water, they kept on running forward, keeping pace to get in as far as they could before they could no longer run.

The water was warmer than expected.
It took them by surprise, but it did not slow them down.

The taste of the waves was near and they were craving it.

The surf was strong but they preferred it that way, as they had a preference for something more intense to be swimming in.

As they went further away from the shoreline, the waves grew in size.
However, it was still too shallow.

The level of the water rose around them as they moved further out.
They began to get ready to immerse their bodies in the ocean as much as they could.
It was a release that was going to provide them with a strong feeling of happiness and joy.

They were nearly where they wanted to be before they would go in completely.

A small, but strong looking wave approached them faster than expected.

No longer running, but still moving as quickly as they could, they prepared to meet it with their bodies.

They dived into the wave and into the ocean, feeling energised as a sense of release came over them.

Their morning had now begun.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 19:21:20
A bit slower than I thought it would take.

Ewe and I went to the beach yesterday and this morning.
I thought I’d write about starting off our swim yesterday in a third-person style to make it more of a story, but I don’t think it turned out well.

It also slowed me down a lot more than I thought it would.

Oh well.

Statue of 楠木 正成 (Kusunoki Masashige)

This is the photo I used as my twenty-sixth entry for Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

From what I’ve read, Kusunoki Masashige was a samurai remembered for his loyalty, among other things.

The statue is an incredibly powerful one, seemingly posed to evoke strength and bravery.

I hope you enjoy.

Rainbow Trouts Prepare to Strike

Floating above the alien landscape of a foreign dimension, the rainbow trouts await the the right moment to rain their fury upon its prey, for meals are few and far between.

Spectres choosing to remain nearby can only watch and do nothing, for they are unable to communicate to the victims of the ravenous hunger of the trouts.

This is my submission for the The Daily Post‘s photo challenge this week.

As the theme is “Trio“, I thought this photo would be appropriate.

Unfortunately I do not have a photo of better quality.

This was taken at Osaka Aquarium.

I’m fairly certain that these are rainbow trout, but I am also aware that I could be wrong.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Countryside Near 成田市 (Narita)

This was one of the last photos I took in Japan.
It was my twenty-fifth submission for  Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

This one was on a themed week, with the theme being “Country”.

I’m mentioning this now at the start of the post for a couple of reasons.
The first being that this one was announced about a month prior.
The second being that it challenged me with some of the photos I took in Japan.

I didn’t find it easy to try and get a photo of the countryside.
Most of the times I saw it was whilst on a 新幹線 (Shinkansen), so a lot of the shots I took were of an incredibly poor quality.
There were a few times whilst on a 新幹線 where I’d find myself waiting to get a photo and miss it due to not being experienced with taking photos from a vehicle moving that fast.
When I’d get a photo I’d like, I’d end up becoming somewhat dissatisfied as I would feel it didn’t capture the Japanese countryside well enough, so I’d try and take another.

I did end up with what I feel was a few good photos, but I consider the one that I submitted to be the best of the bunch.

For me, it has a feeling of finality to it.
It was taken about fifteen minutes before arriving at Narita Airport, so I was thinking about the whole trip at the time.
It is also the last photo of the countryside that I took during the trip.

It seems empty, but it’s not.
It’s a nice, peaceful shot.

I’ve included three more photos of the countryside here because I felt it would be appropriate.

The first two were taken on the way to Osaka.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 47: Pizza box Pillar of Fire

So you’re at work and on your desk is a stack of four really greasy pizza boxes as it was pizza day at the place you work, your house of occupation.

What are you going to do?

I believe the answer should be incredibly obvious and if it is not, then I shall impart on to you the wisdom that shall carry you through to the answer by giving the answer instead of crafting a long-winded, pointless sentence that doesn’t seem to go anywhere at all as it doesn’t make sense to write such a piece of nothingness.

Or does it?

Anyway, you use a lighter or some other flame creating device.

Suddenly you have a pillar of fire on your desk.

It would be of an appreciably large size, respectable and lovely.

People would obviously come up to and ask as to why there is a pillar of fire sitting there on your desk, next to you whilst you work away and you’d say that the reason as to why is because there is one there and then ask as to why it would matter.

It’s a pillar of fire. It’s not anything out of the ordinary.
Besides which, why are they questioning the pillar being there?

Realistically, if there is a pillar of fire there, they should go about their business. It’s not strange to have one sitting on your desk.

You’d take it home, but the last thing you want is people getting all excited about the fact that you have the flame being carried by you to a destination that is inside, unless you want it displayed on your front patio.

This is, of course, assuming your place is not made of wood, for if it is, then the flame would die because, as we all know, wood consumes and eliminates fire wherever it is.

You’d leave it at work as it brightens the office up a bit more and sometimes you need something better than lights continuously shining down on you.

Sometimes you want a little something that can also give you a bit more warmth in the colder months.

You want something that can be seen as a bit more inspiring when it is raining and power goes out, as it could inspire you to harness the flame and set up more pillars of flame around the office that there already are, as, whilst they aren’t out of place, the office could certainly use a few more.

Just like it could use some sort of automated singing toilet that knows all of Luciano Pavarotti’s songs he has sung and can sing them in the most pure of Italian, powerful and booming in a way that no singing toilet has ever been before!

Yes, it was a slow day at work today.

Yes, I do wish my toilet could sing Pavarotti songs to me.

Could you imagine as to how awesome that would be?
The songs would be so wonderful to hear.

And then… flush.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 9:54:92
Under ten minutes again, so I’m happy.
The fire pillar was inspired by a suggestion that we set fire to a stack of four pizza boxes on a co-workers desk today to create a nice pillar of fire.
Not sure how I managed to get five-hundred words out of it, but I managed somehow!
This was written at my desk at home.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 46: Not Sure What to Write About, Then Something

Now that I’ve finished writing about Japan, there are so many more things that I can choose to write about as it’s out of the way and I have the freedom that I so thirstily crave!

I shall write about what I want, where I want, whenever I want.
Yes, even on the toilet.
But putting pen to paper is not as easy a task as it should be.

You see, now that I’ve finished writing about Japan, I do not seem to have anything else to write about, for it’s writing about Japan that I crave.

I feel frustrated and constipated in a way that I never thought was humanly possible to feel and that worries me far more than I feel it should.

I cannot write about anything anymore, for writing about Japan is what has consumed me for all too long.

I don’t know what to do and all I can feel is a nagging feeling that I need to go back in order to write again, for I will never have the ability to write again if I don’t.

I have decided to set out swimming at noon and then get there by dawn the following day, hopefully avoiding any encounters with menacing cucumbers bragging about the various, numerous transgressions that they have so proudly committed that only lead to horrible, horrible blasphemies that one could only dream of in a state that is neither conscious, unconscious and far, far removed from semi-conscious.

It’s a form of con science, you know.

But then again, who is to say that that is what I’ll be looking to avoid, other than me?

I don’t think I’d have too much trouble and the journey would be fairly pleasing.

Maybe I should just do a long jump over there instead.
It would be far, far faster, but then again I might collide with a bird and then that bird would be injured, leading to my caring for it until it can be fit enough to care for itself again.

I think I may be rambling a little too much here, so I think I should increase the level of rambling so that I get sidetracked into something else far more interesting, like talking about how amazingly bad the idea of kicking a cassowary in the face is.

That is an amazingly bad idea as they are vicious birds.

With all of that being said, I think I should just stay here and enjoy the fact that I’m currently sitting on a chair because if I don’t, I may realise that I am, in fact, myself and therefore be forced to experience some sort of apotheosis whilst the ever-cooling universe decides it’s time to shrink, slowly but surely ensuring that there will be nothing but eternal rebirth at the hands of some greater form of chaos that cannot be truly perceived; only experienced in small portions of subtle reality that we do not want to face.

But then again, who knows?

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 9:38:26
I’m pretty happy with that, considering I haven’t done a challenge since September and also how much time I spent on writing about Japan.
This was written at my desk at work.
