One Thousand Word Challenge 126: Almost Under

Time is currently limited, so expect a rambling that goes nowhere. Maybe I’ll attempt to get this all written in under nine minutes and so that will mean this is treated as both a challenge to spew as many words out as I can, and a challenge to make sure that it is able to be read.

Well, I guess it could be read regardless, but I want some sort of sense to be made. I’m a bit cold, however, and so one of my hands is a little sluggish, but hopefully that will soon break and I will be able to traipse on forward and get all the writing done in under the limit that I stated above. I don’t know if that will indeed be the case, but there is always hope and hope is something that can be used to fuel determination, and  the more that I write at the moment, the more determined to get under the limit of which I stated above I feel, so I guess we’ll see what happens.

Of course, in this particular instance there is no harm in not getting under the limit. There is no big loss if I don’t and so there’s little pressure on me. I am not trying to save the world; nor am I trying to change the future or something like that. I’m just trying to write and I am trying to write in a cohesive manner whilst under a strict limit. I should probably have a shower soon. However, as soon after that point of having a shower the art of commencing the thing that I get paid to do begins and so I want to be shower fresh for that, but that is something that should be discussed at another time as right now I need to focus on this and I want to make sure that I get to the end of it all in once piece.

Well, of course I will get there in once piece, but I need to make sure that that is the case. I need to interpolate the pain in my wrists and work out what they are signifying which might just be that I am going too fast and so need to ease off a bit, but I won’t. I will stubbornly persist and hope for the best and I will come crashing over the finish line, but of course I don’t know as to how far away that is at the moment.

Using small words helps. Using lengthy words does not. However, I’d prefer to make sure that the vocabulary and the vernacular expand and show some sort of swift drifting and swaying, but in an expansive manner so that the planes that are visible from the view of which I wish I had remain encapsulated within some sort of positioning on an idle island shown only when the moon is at half, yet the day remains strong and stringent.

So anyway, now that that is out of the way I am feeling fully invested into trying to get under nine minutes. Of course I have attempted to do this a few times now, but right now I am galvanised. I don’t know why. I did not set out to do this this morning. I only wanted to write and see what would happen. I wanted to make sure that I could get some writing done before I started work so that I wouldn’t be piling everything into the afternoon of which will be a time where I need to do other things. However, now I am doing this and I am getting there and perhaps I will make it to the end within the limit of which I have set myself. I don’t know if I will, but I’m feeling it. Maybe I should stop talking about it and just get on with the writing, but maybe not.

Now that that also is pout of the way, it is safe to say that the final hurdles are here and so I am correcting my posture in the hopes that that somehow helps. I am racing on forward and hoping for the best, but I have no regrets if I do not make it. I have jo qualms about not making this bit of writing finished in under nine minutes. It is fun right now, but then again it is fun most of the time.

Certainly won’t be fun when I clean up all the spelling errors, but that is not something to worry about at the present moment and so I shall continue barreling on forward into the future that is coming into itself as the present and I experience it at a rate of one second of time per second of time and hope that somehow I don’t phase out of this thing that is locked in within a rate of which I find appreciable as that way I know where I am and where I am not at any given time. Certainly can make things a bit easier for me too as  I keep on going forward and hoping for the best and all that other stuff.

Anyway, now that that last bit is out of the way, I guess I should focus on trying to wrap this all up. Maybe I will get there in time, but right now I don’t think I will. Still, it has been a good run. I have enjoyed this and I don’t know if  it will be enjoyable to ready, but right now I don’t care. I can worry about that later.

Certainly is hurting my wrists, but I’m, nearly there and so I can stop soon enough. I can stop when I  hit the target of words that makes this thing the amount of words that it needs to be.

Maybe next time I will get there, but right now it’s just a race on to the end. When I reach it I’ll rest.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 09:22:78

A fun mess to make.
Almost under nine minutes. Might get there next time.

Albury Station

Or part of it at the very least.

Once more a quiet photo, but this one feels empty. Still. And so on and so forth.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 972: Too Many Words

An early start to the rambling in the hopes that it is done before later, so the aim is to be done sooner rather than later, or something to similar effect. We’ll see, but of course it depends on how much I can stretch out the rambling. If I can stretch it out sufficiently enough, then perhaps this will be some sort of work that is longer than necessary. If I cannot, then perhaps this will be some sort of work that is not longer than necessary. There still remains time to find out and so the only way of finding out is by going on the journey and seeing where it leads and all that other stuff and junk and so on and so forth. You get the idea. I may not, but you do and so this is the starting point.

This is after the starting point and already I can feel that this is not going to go as far as I would like, but at least there was something that I will pretend was a noble attempt. So long as I can pretend, I can keep on going, but perhaps what I should actually be doing is getting ready for work and all that other stuff. If I go through that process, then perhaps I can reach other things and then focus on this at the last minute so as to make sure that the stress and panic that seems to motivate takes as much hold as I need it to, but then again that is not something I want to do and so do it is not what I will. Instead what I will do is keep writing in a lazy manner and hope that somehow this all comes together, and I will do it whilst wearing gloves as gloves are good at keeping the hands warm and it is cold and all that other stuff.

Perhaps none of this will happen and the words will just write themselves. There will be no interference from me. I will not type a single letter. No key will be struck by my fingers. Everything will just happen of its own accord and so the expression will have no interference or forcing through the process of writing and the words will be formed and they will be beautiful and all that other stuff.

Perhaps not.

Well, I think that in saying all of that, what really should be happening is the sitting here and rambling away until there is nothing left to ramble about. I might just keep on going until the sunrise in the morning, though that already has happened so perhaps it would be better for me to keep on going off into the horizon as the sun sets in a dramatic and cathartic manner, though perhaps that would be too verbose and that’s not necessarily what I want to put forward. Then again, it could happen. You never know with these things, until you do.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:08:38

This was a stretch to write. I’m glad I didn’t try to make it longer.

Eriko Imura: Untamed Heart

This was written over four listens, though there was very little done over the first and fourth. I was mostly aiming to describe the song itself and not imagery and I think I did alright with most of that.

Eriko Imura’s (井村 絵里子) “Untamed Heart” is from Klonoa of the Wind: Door to Phantomile Original Soundtrack (風のクロノア Door to Phantomile オリジナルサウンドトラック). It’s the soundtrack for the game Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

I hope you enjoy.

Bells ring out in a pattern and strings draw out a note, but only briefly. Soon this is replaced mainly by a descending twinkling above a heartbeat and a brief, repeating sound as they form a pattern in a silent space.

The beat remains as most of the rest drops away. The strings return, drawing out, smooth and low. They’re met with spaced, tender piano sounds. Above are single notes forming a clear flow. They accentuate and build on the melody, almost floating above whilst still being anchored.

A repeat of sorts and now the heartbeat finds itself joined by more percussive sounds. A crystalised oscillating forms and, when sounds hold and draw themselves out, it starts to rise upward.

From there piano rings out, echoing out into the vastness of space. It is joined by the floating notes, the strings and some other sounds, slowly moving, decisively, above the steady beat.

A small moment and a return to the first full melody, though stripped back and now more minor in a sense. All the sounds are low and the crystalised oscillating gains more focus.

Where there was piano is now none and the strings become more apparent, rising and flowing underneath a high sound, shining away, perhaps glistening, and much like what it is calm, gentle and beautiful, even during the final beats as the song ends.

Ducks Take Flight

Early last month I was at Sydney Olympic Park, wandering about.
I had the opportunity to take this photo and so I did.
I was kind of hoping that they’d stay, but they didn’t. Oh well.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-fifty-sixth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Black and White“.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

However, for July each challenge is guest-curated, and each theme has been announced.
Anne Sandler of Slow Shutter Speed is curating this one.

On July 3rd John Steiner of Journeys With Johnbo curated with the theme of “On the Water“.

The rest for July are as follows:

July 17th – Rusha Sams of Oh The Places We See: “Getting Away”

July 24th – Beth Smith of Wandering Dawgs: “Along Back Country Roads”

July 31st – Ana Campo of Anvica’s Gallery: “Postcards”

I recommend participating in the challenges. They’re enjoyable and allow room for interpretation of the theme without straying too far. If you don’t participate, then I recommend that you at least check out what others of the Lens-Artists community are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

Shrek From Memory

I’ve been meaning to get MS Paint Masterpieces going again for a while but have done very little toward that goal due to procrastination, among other things.

I did this really quickly back in May and then put it aside. I’d thought about finishing it and finally did today, though all that was done today was the adding of teeth, colour and words.

I hope you enjoy.

Adrianne Lenker: Instrumentals

This was started today and finished today.
It was about three hours of work. The writing came easily; the editing also, but not to the same extent.
I think this is a bit messy, but I’m content with the result. It gets stuff across.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going and (aside from the next few weeks) new episodes are available through there first.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

A click and a ringing, then a single note followed by some more notes. Striking, yet gentle and spaced guitar sounds play gently whilst chimes ring peacefully in the background. Soon the music comes into more of a shape. It is gentle, tender and seemingly peaceful; A nice way to ease into “Music For Indigo”, Instrumentals‘ first piece.

A slight pause and then there’s build into something with more of a bounce. Maybe it’s a light hop. There’s a little less space but the playing still feels quiet. The section remains peaceful and it keeps on flowing until it too finds a pause.

Here the song shifts back into something more spaced. Notes seem more careful, almost as though a desire to lull into a more relaxed state has taken over. There’s a slight build that eventually gives way to chimes for a very brief, sublime moment. Then the guitar returns, ringing out a singular note in a way that implies a sense of delicate echoing. Up to this point, despite the shifts the piece has felt mostly connected. Here it feels as though Adrianne Lenker has come to a pause and is working out how to proceed. It’s not long before the way forward reveals itself, however, and so the gentle playing continues whilst giving most notes breathing space.

Soon the chimes return and the guitar picks up pace, then oscillates for a moment before returning to spaced notes. It’s all light and peaceful and perhaps upbeat, almost joyous stuff. Eventually it carefully descends into something a bit less so, though only for a brief moment. The playing shifts back to sounding lighter; as they delicately flicker, natural harmonics become the prominent guide. They provide a nice shift in tone and build in mood just before the piece returns to something with more guitar and a little less space.

It’s here where the song feels like it has returned from a period of aimless, relaxed wandering. “Music For Indigo” becomes more lively, steady and focused, but it remains relaxed and at ease. The section is busier, but it doesn’t feel busy and cluttered; it just feels relaxed and highly melodic and flowing.

As this section fades Adrianne Lenker’s quietly says “I’m starting over”. Another brief pause and then some gentle strumming comes in, almost like shifts in a light breeze. It’s not quite hypnotic, but it’s rather relaxing and low-key. Once more it feels like Lenker is working out the next step, but less overtly so. Once the gentle strumming reaches its end it closes on a natural harmonic and some background ambience.

The background ambience flows through into “Mostly Chimes” which resume the guitar playing. Slow it is as notes ring out and softly fade away before the next set find themselves looping a pattern. They seemingly slow down and speed up in places; Volume shifts a little and gradually some of the parts gain a bit more expansion in tone and range.

A gently arpeggiating pattern appears, moving the piece forward. It’s calm and lightly melancholic as it drifts on, seemingly wandering, wondering and searching. A “dulled” note eventually finds its way in and feels like a percussive counterpoint to a careful dance. Eventually this all fades away and chimes take over. The chimes move slowly, draw out their notes and hum in an unhurried manner. Somewhere in background of the tonal expression wisps of pretty birdsong build on the music.

The chimes fade out for a moment, leaving a suggestion of quiet, though the birdsong remains. It’s a moment of breathing in a space full of air. Then chimes return, humming away and the birdsong continues, though now for a moment joined by something like a pleasantly aimless percussive sound as low and as gentle as the chimes.

Between two pauses the percussive nature of the chimes comes a bit more to the forefront, perhaps functioning as another breathing point. The section is both full and sparse, striking out with multiple gentle thuds and lasting only for a short moment.

The humming soon returns and stretches out and relaxes. It is though it is painting a scene of a house by a river in a forest contained within a mostly sunlit spot. More sounds appear and the chimes pick up and become livelier in a way that suggests climax of the most gentle variety. The sounds become fuller and greater, though without intensity. All remains relaxed and eventually fades out, just in time for more birdsong. The chimes then return and their tonally harmonious ringing slowly stretches out, though not in a revealing or unfurling way. Eventually it gives way to what sounds like foliage crunching under steps, leading to something perhaps more grounded which lasts until “Mostly Chimes” suddenly ends.

Instrumentals is an interesting work in how it leads on from Songs. Rather than a series of individual verse / chorus / verse tracks that work together, Instrumentals feels like two sides of the same piece. There’s still a sense of the personal and expressive in the music, but in relying more on sound the album feels more subtle.

“Music For Indigo” feels mostly like jamming based around specific feelings or sensations. It’s very much in the vein of a series of rough sketches that work together. Some of the changes feel abrupt which works in terms of shifting mode to carry expression. However, rather than remain in the background, at times the piece seemingly looks to draw attention to itself which can break its spell. Comparatively “Mostly Chimes” instead keeps itself mostly in the background. It neither pushes nor pulls making it easier to become lost within its sounds as they gently flow onward.

Treated as ambient music, Instrumentals works nicely; “Mostly Chimes” more so than “Music For Indigo”. It also works nicely treated as a postscript to Songs. Whilst Songs feels like expressing and coming to terms with certain things, Instrumentals feels like the result of coming to terms. If it actually is I’ve no idea. Regardless, the album does make for some pleasingly relaxed and peaceful music.

Instrumentals is available here.

Adrianne Lenker: Songs

I wrote a draft for this review a few months ago and then didn’t pick it back up until a few hours ago. Some things were move around but most what I wrote was re-written.

I think I get just enough across with this one. Not too sure.

“Two Reverse” wastes little time in starting off Songs. There’s some very quiet – what feels like something in the far background – instrumentation. A brief pause for some background ambience, then guitar takes off and, supported with some simple percussion, allows its notes to seemingly bounce off of each other. It’s a flowing melody that does well to support Lenker’s voice when it comes in. Words draw out and carried as though upon an air current. They’re gentle and floating, but there’s direction behind them. Overall “Two Reverse” is light, easy listening, though not without suggesting something heavier underneath.

From there Songs sticks to predominantly guitar and bare voice. The guitar is gentle and rhythmic – especially so when supported with quiet percussion. Sometimes it feels like a comforting blanket of sorts, and that’s fine; At other times it’s less so and becomes weightier in sound, but never gratuitously, and that’s also fine. There’s not a point where it feels too light or not light enough; it’s doing what it needs to do at any given moment.

Adrianne Lenker’s voice remains as expressive as ever. Buoyed by the instrumentation, but not restricted, she carries carries her words with articulate ease, and puts them forward without coming off as overbearing. Considering the inspiration behind the songs and the nature of the lyrics, this is a good thing as Lenker’s delivery makes it easier to relate. It also means that, when things click, the songs hit really hard. Sure, there’s a lot of pretty work in there but it serves a purpose. These songs easily could’ve gone way too far, but Adrianne Lenker clearly knows how far is too far and wisely doesn’t go further than necessary. She’s not howling about pain; nor is she forcing every word. She’s moving though each word with enough to create an understanding and connection; It doesn’t need to go farther than that.

Songs inhabits a lo-fi space, but that feels like it’s selling it short. Lo-fi can suggest a rawness, or a lack of studio polish that may leave the songs feeling less complete. Maybe these pieces could work recorded in a more hi-fi way, but they feel complete as they are. “Two Reverse” starts the album off unassumingly, “Anything” expresses a sense of yearning with effective weight, and “Forwards Beckon Rebound” feels like it holds hurt and bitterness, but without miring itself in those. “Come” has a drifting sensation that keeps its emotional heaviness from sinking the song, “Zombie Girl” also has a sense of yearning, but with a greater sense of looking to understand something previously hidden, and closer “My Angel” feels reflective of of what was in a delicate and poetic manner.

These songs (as well as the others) function well as they are as the lo-fi approach works well for Adrianne Lenker’s non-band output. There’s a softness and warmth to the songs, even when they become really heavy, that just wouldn’t be there if the songs had greater clarity and crispness. There’s a sense of space without Adrianne Lenker feeling far away; rather, she’s right there, keeping the songs close, helping further build connection. It’s an good approach for Songs, an album full of gentleness and prettiness, and clear, moving expression.

Songs is available here.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 971: The Thing That Needs to be Said

So I’m going to write about something that I’ve written about many a time at this stage. I feel that it’s something I shouldn’t write about anymore, but it still is something that I will continue to write about it seems. I don’t want to do this anymore either, but apparently this is a topic that needs repeated coverage until everyone in the world finally listens and stops doing the thing that they need to stop doing sooner rather than later.

Now, let me tell you, this doesn’t fil me with enthusiasm or hope; rather, I find myself filled with even more rage than I had previously held within my being. This is not something I expected; nor had I anticipated this feeling and sensation of feeling the feeling of rage once more, though I do seem to get angry and frustrated on a regular basis, but that is neither here not here at the present moment.

I must also clarify that I really, really don’t want to discuss this any more than I already have. I’ve done it far too many times and I don’t want to do it now. You could say that I am stalling for time and I would not necessarily disagree with you if you were to say such a thing. However, it must be noted that, when discussing a subject of such nature, there sometimes come times where you need to pause for air, which in a sense is what I am doing right now. Sure, I could be doing other things, but I really need to make sure that I am ready to launch into the subject at hand so that when I do, it is covered as efficiently as possible. I don’t want to waste words and I don’t want to go on a lengthy tangent. What I do want to do (other than avoid writing about the subject of course) is make sure that I deliver what it is that I feel needs covering in as incisive and blistering a manner possible, and also with as few words as possible used.

Now I need to think about how I go about this and approach it all some more, but I don’t even know if I have the energy to keep on caring about what it is that I feel needs to be covered. Of course, I will cover it regardless as, even if I feel I cannot care, I will somehow keep on caring as sometimes that is the way that things go and so you just keep on going on with the things to reach the goal, but there is only so much more I can cover before the inevitable reaches me and I need to actually say the thing that needs to be said.

Well, with all of that out of the way, I now am going to say the thing that I feel needs to be said:

Don’t treat people in customer service as though they’re beneath you.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:29:43

I was hoping to get to one thousand words, but I was stretching this thin early on and so I stopped early.

So this is a lot of waffle with something I consider important included. Marvelous.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 970: About Nothing in Particular

Alright, so it is the morning and all that other stuff, but I sit here and I do the thing and that thing is the typing as I am trying to get this done before the start of work as I don’t want to get this done after the start of work as there will be responsibilities that I need to deal with and unfortunately they come before my desire to not deal with them, so it’s a bit of a position in which I’ll find myself in, but of course I’ll deal with it at some stage. I will reconcile the desire to not take care of responsibilities with the need to take care of responsibilities. However, before then it is free time and I choose to make use of that free time by writing about nothing in particular and somehow that will be revealed in the text of which I am putting forward at the current moment.

Okay, so I haven’t thought this through very much. What I have thought through is the desire to write and the desire to express that desire to write, but not so much the writing itself. I guess this could be considered doing things the wrong way, or something. I don’t know. What I do know is that something is being done right now and I am doing it, but there are other people out there also doing things and they too should be able to express their desires to do things in a way that carries forward their desires in a way that expresses them in a way that shows they they have been expressed, or something. Perhaps that is key in the art of expressing desires in a way that shows that desires are expressed.

Alright, I think I am done for the morning. That’s it; I’ve nothing else that can top whatever that rambling repetition is so I guess now I need to look at a way of wrapping this up in a manner that expresses the finality of this bit of writing. Maybe that will take some time and maybe it will take a lot of planning. It probably would go a lot faster if two of the keys on this keyboard hadn’t decided to start getting difficult to press down. They’ve been cleaned out a few times now and I’m pretty sure that it’s not due to dirt, but rather due to their suffering under my relentless onslaught of key pressing. I think. I don’t quite know. Maybe there is dirt that I have missed and it is forever there, unable to be removed due to being in a position where it cannot be reached, therefore achieving the goal of creating eternal annoyance for me.

Maybe one day I will deal with the dirt in a manner that some may consider as being proactive, which likely would mean replacing the keyboard, but today is not that day and so I will continue on and maintain my annoyance.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:33:08

Written this morning and shared now due to work needing attention.

Not a great writing by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s rambling in a way I like.
