Five-Hundred Word Challenge 801: Effects on Writing

In my writing this at the moment, due to the effects of my doing NaNoWriMo I’m beginning to believe that this month will quite likely be mostly about writing. That is to say that my writing will mostly be about writing. Of course that may not happen, but I’m beginning to believe that will be the case. Why?

Well, most of my writing is about writing already. Sure, it’s clumsy, ill-fitting and all that other stuff, but more often than not my proclivity for subject choice falls on writing more often than it does not, and that’s fine. However, that is not the reason why. I mean, it is part of the reason, but it is not the main reason, so I shall move on before I dig a hole further at this particular point in time.

the reason as to why I believe is very much due to doing NaNoWriMo, for the thing about doing the writing a manuscript that no one will read (and I’m fine with that as I’m not doing it to produce something worth reading, or even worth developing for that matter), it seems to put me in a position of being a bit drained, so for some reason rather than tap into that potential, I end up writing about writing as it’s an easy choice.

I guess most of my writing being about writing is the main reason. Maybe.

Anyway, with that out of the way I can get to the main point of this bit of writing, which is to say that I don’t have a point. I have no statement of which I can currently make that will provide anything on any level of profundity, which I guess is on me, but hey, sometimes that is the way the wheel turns. There also is no wheel, so I guess that is the way things go sometimes.

I really should get on with it all, however. There are things to do and music to listen to. It is music of the background variety, though it does hold some prominence. I’m only listening to it; this is stuff I don’t need to review and it’s stuff I’d rather not write about as, whilst I enjoy the music, I find the artist to be on some level of reprehensibility. Whether the described actions that make the artist feel as such to me are true or not, I do not know. However, for the time being I feel it is better to not give that artist a platform where I describe their music.

Perhaps it would be better to say that I find their actions reprehensible. If they turn out to be false claims, then I shall back away. However, for the time being, I listen to their music with trepidation.

Anyway, with all of that being said, I must wrap this up. There aren’t too many words left before I hit the limit, and work starts soon, so I guess this writing shall now end.

Look Away From the Mic

This is a photo of the vocalist of a band known as King when they supported Wolves in the Throne Room at The Bald Faced Stag last year (full gallery on Culture Eater here; the review is here).

This is a pretty moody shot, but I like that for the context of the vocalist’s form. It’s kind of a rock moment that was captured what with the looking away whilst gripping the microphone stand, but I also feel there’s a lot of control coming forward, as well as a lot of passion.

Here are some other photos from the gig.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 800: Trap of my Own Creation

Racing, racing, racing. Need to stop doing that, but sometimes that is the way that the rolls roll, as they say.

I think I am on a roll of sorts. However, I mean this strictly in the metaphorical sense. It’s all metaphor and no one even knew that that was indeed the case. Sometimes that is how things go.

Anyway, once more I have fallen into a trap of my own creation and once more it is I who willingly stepped into the trap. This is a bit disappointing at  this stage, as I need to stop doing this. I need to stop trapping myself. There are so many avenues and yet I keep on falling into the pitfalls of my creation. There is a ladder here, but rather than climb the ladder I am relegating myself to the part of playing in the mud, though it’s not so much playing as it is furiously pounding the ground with my fists, kicking up dirt and having it fly into my eyes but refusing to stop even though stopping and climbing the ladder would be a much better choice.

This of course is not the most optimal things that I could do right now, but this seems to be what I want to do. I don’t know why that is the case. I know there are better things that I could be doing ri0ght now, but for some reason this is indeed what I am doing.

That ladder needs to be careful as I might break it a little. That will make it harder for me to get out of the hole in which I have dug and fallen into, but of course I won’t accept responsibility for my predicament. I will not accept that I have put myself here. I need to blame others. The people who look in will be the ones I blame. They might see the ladder and think to put in a rope, but I might just break that too. This is of course all silly stuff to do, but it seems to be what I am currently doing.

Sorry if this is obvious: I am referring to my writing. Being dramatic about it, but that is what I am referring to.

Anyway, so I would gnash my teeth and point fingers and point at the people and the dirt that has gone everywhere (even though it might be difficult to tell). Then I’d point at the people a bit more and then I’d scream and whinge and do all of the other things. Of course I am the one in the hole and I am the one who created the hole. However, I should not accept responsibility for my actions as if I do then that means I have to accept that I’m doing this to myself. Of course that would also mean that I can move past the whole issue (with enough time), but who wants to do that?

Well, maybe me I guess.

I’m kind of happy with this. A bit too repetitive, but I think the flow works.

One Thousand Word Challenge 77: Cosmic Horse and the Eternal Bunt: The Beginnings

Open fields, though not always. Just a lot of the time. There were open fields and there were sometimes thick forests, or woodland areas, or whatever you want to call them. These were things that needed to be contended with on the odd occasion. Not always; only on the odd occasion. It was fine; There were worse things out there that required attention. Could always be worse. Could be better, but could always be worse.

These were things. There were other things as well, such as open skies, though sometimes they were cloudy and therefore not considered as having the quality of “open”. Sometimes there was rain and rain was a fine thing. Not the worst problem to have, though of course there was the odd flooding here and there and that could cause some issues, let me tell you. However, that’s not the point. The point is that this is painting the medium of the imagery. This is a tale of fantasy, or something. It’s a tale; that much is for sure. How much of it is fantasy is going to depend on how much you believe that the tale is fantasy.

Anyway, with that little bit of building the world out of the way, we need to remember that the story is about an individual.. Theirs was a humble beginning; just a young foal hanging out with its herd of horses and it was also a horse, hence the referring to as a young foal. Not an old foal; a young foal. It was a young horse.

What did this horse do? It did horse things. Galloped about, bit things, kicked things, neighed, made other horse sounds. There was the moving and the not moving. There were the things that horses do. However, this horse was destined for greatness.

Of course I cannot get into that greatness as of yet, for this is just an origin story at this particular point. Well, there will be greatness, but this is just the first part of everything. Can’t start with the fantastic as that might not make for a good continuation of the story. Need to start with the humble. Need to keep things low down for now. Perhaps there will be some tragedy. Just give me time to work it all out first.

Anyway, there was one particular day when this particular foal of the young period of its life went away from the herd with some other horses of the young period of their lives. There was some reasoning behind this, though whatever that reasoning is I am unable to tell, for I am unable to understand what it is that horses say and I am also unable to read the minds of horses, which happen to be psychic don’t you know. Weird thing, but it’s true.

Anyway, these horses were communicating with each other via telepathy as for some reason they didn’t feel much like talking openly with each other in their accursed horse language. Though, if they were talking to each other through the power of the mind, then perhaps there was some sort of telepathic openness.

Anyway…

So they were doing the thing where they go places and they went into the woods of a place that they had not been to since the last time they were there. Whilst there they got to experience things that horses may or may not experience. There was neighing. There was the whinnying. There were some other things. Occasionally some galloping would happen as sometimes horses gallop. Sometimes they don’t gallop, but sometimes they do gallop. It’s a phenomenon of sorts.

Anyway, once that was done the horses then went out of the woods and back to the herd. The particular foal of which this story is about (or at least supposed to be about; it could be tangential) was one of the ones to come out of the woods, as all of the horses came out of the woods of the horses that came out of the woods. In its returning to the herd, it knew that somehow it was destined for greatness, but it did not know if that greatness would indeed arrive, or in what form it would take if it did indeed arrive at all. Still, in knowing it knew, and knowing meant that it knew, so that was good for its conscious at that particular time.

However, as the days passed the weight of expectation grew burdensome and it somehow did not know how to wield the burden properly, and of course it meant that the weight of expectation weighed heavily on its mind. What if it did not want to be destined for greatness? What if it did not want to do things that would imply, suggest or even enforce that greatness? What if it just wanted to be a horse and nothing more than a horse? There are plenty of great things about being a horse. It could eat and gallop and do other things that horses do. It could visit the woods! Could it do these things if it had to fulfill some great destiny that was too abstract to completely understand?

It knew not and so, as the days turned to nights and the nights turned to days, the weight grew greater, though externally nothing changed other than the seasons and its size and suggested maturity as a horse, though of course that maturity was uneven, though paced at a steady, acceptable rate so as to make sure that there was some sort of growing later on down the track.

Eventually the weight became something forgotten, though only mostly, for it still sat there, somewhere in the recesses of the horse’s mind, waiting, for even though these things could be put off and ignored, they could never bee gotten rid of until handled properly, and this was something that the young horse did not understand. As much as it thought it adopted regular living, its story had just begun.

Angophora costata Resin

Angophora costata is better known as Sydney red gum. Probably is more common in Sydney than other places.

Here’s a small part of a Sydney red gum that I saw whilst bushwalking last week. Whilst the resin was mostly solidified, it looked rather fresh. Not sure if it was; just is how it looked to me.

I think that here the resin helps to expand the range of colour shading on the trunk. I also like how it “disturbs” the trunks smoothness without taking away from the image.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 799: Bland Stuff

Quite potentially today is going to be a busy day. There are many things to do and work is a little quiet so I need to take advantage of the time of which I am currently afforded. Failing to do so will end in… disaster… or so they say.

Anyway, I think that I’m trying to create some sort of narrative this morning. I think. Do not know as of yet. Surprisingly I’m feeling awake and ready to tackle the world, but considering my size relative to the size of the world, that may prove to be a tricky endeavour. Need to aim a little lower for the time being, but there’s nothing wrong with dreaming or thinking big. Small goals first, then build up to something bigger.

I think that as I say this I might be fooling myself a little. Just looking for an introductory passage that likely will have nothing to do with how all of this bit of writing ends. That is what I want to believe at the moment, but considering that I’m writing freely and not really thinking about what I am writing at the moment, everything I am currently putting down has the possibility of having nothing to do with anything that follows it, or precedes it for that matter. We’ll just have to see how it all pans out.

Anyway, sometimes when you do plan things there still remains no connection. That’s fine; it’s fine to have things disconnected so long as they are done well. I’m not claiming that this will be a quality piece of writing; I’m just stating things that, now that I think about it, are quite obvious, so I don’t know as to why I am stating them. Maybe that helps to fill the void, or something. I don’t know; I just keep on going on, or something to similar effect.

Still got a bit of time to fill, though of course rather than create constant filler I’m looking to find some sort of meaning, though of course the writings remain inane and that’s also fine. It’s all done for the love of writing, though of course sometimes it is done for other reasons, but I won’t go into those at the present moment. Those can be explored in the future, when I write more about things that don’t matter, or do matter. Would rather write things that do matter than don’t, but of course so long as I continue on the path of which I am currently continuing, that might not happen. Need to veer into the shrubbery and go exploring. Slowly, but surely there will be something that reveals itself, though with each bit of writing something else reveals itself. It’s the way that it all goes sometimes and I’m fine with that. Would be fine if all the writing was brilliant, but then that probably would be something else entirely that I am unable to grasp with, so I’ll just settle with treading water.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:08:76

I’m not sure what the aim was for this one. Maybe it was to write bland stuff.
Still, the writing speed was good, I think.

Einstürzende Neubauten: Alles In Allem Review

This is another review that I sat on for far too long.
I’m happy that it’s done, but I feel as though I could’ve done much better.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Einstürzende Neubauten, you’re after my heart.

Well, probably not, but anyway…

Album’s called Alles In Allem.

A lot of Alles In Allem is “quiet” and rhythmic. There is a lot of space, a lot of calmness, a lot of carefulness. Perhaps the album presents a quieter, more melodic form of Einstürzende Neubauten. Unsurprising really, considering considering the thread they’ve weaved through over the past two decades.

So here’s a few words on some of the album’s songs:

“Ten Grand Goldie” has a dry, kind of tense / terse sensation that eventually switches around and sounds like it becomes more celebratory toward the end whilst Blixa Bargeld hollers “Here comes ten grand goldie!” repeatedly. Simple, firm bass keeps the idea of a melody going forward, samples come and go, and the song remains strictly rhythmic. Bit of noise used tastefully, and the brass toward the end helps shape the song into sounding more celebratory and festive than when when it begun.

Comparatively, “Möbliertes Lied” sounds more romantic and journeying. Slow, steady percussion allows everything to slow more and the whole song seems to expand out onto a plain of sorts. Bass, constructed sound and what I suspect is a synth draw out and ride the expansion, providing some sort of definition to the movement.

The following song, “Zivilisatorisches Missegeschick”, starts with a blast that seems almost like a pallet cleanser. From there it’s a song akin to a soundscape more than it the traditional idea of a song. Occasional sounds fill the space that Blixa’s vocals and a “pitched” buzzing don’t. The song shifts and contorts when necessary, but remains itself the whole way through.

Title track “Alles In Allem” sounds more reflective than prior tracks. Perhaps it also sounds more mournful; it’s difficult to say. The song is slow in a way that makes it feel like it’s carrying something emotionally heavy, but at the same time it sort of walks forward resolute and not overly burdened.

“Wedding” is probably the most continuously… intense… that Alles In Allem gets, though saying that feels like a bit of a stretch. It has this sort of rolling thrust to it; a sort of urgency that the other tracks lack. The song slowly builds itself into something more full, though not necessarily intense. It’s more that slowly the sound gains a greater amount of definition built around its core. However, it still feels pointed and quite direct, even if nothing gets to a point of trying to overwhelm you. As such the energy is a little different to some of the other tracks, but the song remains firmly within the album’s feel and sound.

Closing the album is “Templehof”, which takes on strings as the predominant element for its foundation. Along with other sounds, the strings create a sense of stirring and rising. It’s a rather calm, perhaps accepting closer that seems to look at the past, not with nostalgia, but with rumination. Vocally Blixa follows suit, keeping himself low and “quiet”, though with great clarity and precision, letting his words stick as much as they had on prior songs.

Alles In Allem sounds emotional, though in some places it seems quite detached. Being that it’s an album about (as far as I am aware) Berlin, perhaps it’s due to a sense of reflection rather than nostalgia, though as far as I’m aware, often Einstürzende Neubauten’s lyrics express things in the abstract rather than the actual. However, tone-wise the vocals and composition choices help to provide that reflective and emotional feel. Maybe the album is more about past forms of Berlin. Maybe it’s not about Berlin at all.

In part my feeling as though the album is more on the emotional side (vocal-wise) likely is due to my not understanding the German language which has led to me focusing on the intonation and how it works with the music more. Admittedly I could look up translated lyrics, but I’m concerned of not getting everything through losing meaning in translation. I’m not sure if this is a silly or sensible concern to have.

I do think Alles In Allem is worth the time. I can’t be sure as to how it ranks among Einstürzende Neubauten’s body of work. The album’s a little less rigid than prior works, but overall stays consistent with the quality of their output. What I am sure of is that it is a beautiful, focused and expressive work.

Alles In Allem is available here and here.

Cowan Station

As seen in Cowan.

To do the walk I did last week I had to cross over the tracks. Easy enough.
Took this photo whilst crossing over as there were no trains about.

I think this shot almost makes the station appear longer than its actual length, but I’m okay with that. I think it has some appreciable geometry, as well as toning.

Overall I don’t think this is a great photo, but I am happy with the result.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 798: That Lazy Thing

Gotta stop doing that lazy thing, but lazy thing is lazy done and doing the thing is what I’m doing right now. Might also do it later. The opportunity is there, so why not take it?

Well, truth be told, I cannot as there are other things that need to be done and these things bleed off into days and years until the sound of it all resounds back with a quiet, yet firm laugh and you’re scraping the waste off your waste, or something. Not exactly a great thing to do and not a great thing to conjure, and I don’t feel like engaging in the conjuring right now. Would rather endure and something else. Couldn’t think of a good way to end that sentence. My apologies and all that other stuff.

Anyway, the music rolls and I sit here and I’m doing the thing that involves the keyboard. Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day (it might not be), but today also is an interesting day. All days are interesting, but it seems that there is an electricity in the air that is cutting through everything that it can. Probably won’t dissipate for a long time. Hope it does, but it probably will not.

Anyway, now that I’ve said that bit of thing that I have said… wait… it’s also going to be interesting in two days. Anyway, now that I’ve said that bit, I think it is time to move toward the next bit, whatever that bit may be. I currently cannot comprehend what it will be. That may have something to do with the not doing much of anything up until the afternoon, but perhaps it does not. I’m sure that if I gave myself enough time I would be able to divine the true reasoning. However, that is not for here, nor for there. It is currently for something else. I think it is for something else. I don’t know; I just live here.

I guess that now that all of that is said, I think I really should look at wrapping up this for the rest of the day. It’s pleasant and I can do some gardening. Might even read a book. Might even satisfy the consumption requirement so that my gullet has had some sort of sustenance pass through it. There are so many options and they all are limited. I guess that I should see how far I can take them, if I can take them anywhere at all. There’s plenty of time to find out, however, so I’m going to make use of the time afforded to me the best way that I can. I think I will anyway. I think I can and I think I will. Assuming that I can and will, then perhaps this is not where the whole thing ends.

Actually I think I’m near the end of my word limit, so I guess that this is going to find itself wrapping up somewhere around here.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:25:93

I think that perhaps at the moment I should be writing things such as these before I start on NaNoWriMo stuff.

Human Impact: Human Impact Review

I sat too long on this review.

I finished a draft off a few weeks ago and then didn’t do anything and I’m not sure why.
Rewrote part of it today. I think doing so improved the review a little, but overall I feel I’ve done better.

I hope you enjoy.

What sounds like someone plugging in an instrument, then bass, then percussion, then some crushed noise. Slow guitar. Bass moving about. Chris Spencer’s vocals come in held low. There’s some kind of anger, or perhaps bitterness in his voice. All instruments unify, creating a highly rhythmic sound to drives the song forward. It sounds rather ragged and broken, sort of junk-like with a strong sense of texture and tone. The song gets loud, but at the same time it seems rather quiet.

“November” opens Human Impact’s Human Impact and gives a really good taste of what’s to come. At the same time, “November” is a bit deceptive in that it’s a little more welcoming than other tracks. There’s an idea of the incoming textures and framework, but the following tracks change in coldness and aggression by varying amounts.

Following track “E605” is a rather cold and menacing track. The percussion switches from some sort of “swing and snap” to something more rolling in the choruses. There’s space for the bass to shine, the choruses get big and harsh, but overall the song maintains its strong sense of tension quite well.

“Protester” has this sort of jagged, stuttering drumming that gives the song a staggered sort of groove. Plenty of rolling bass, the synth adds new dimension without deviating too far from the song; Chris Spencer plays some interesting guitar stuff whilst going into familiar vocal modes.

“Respirator” sounds terse in some places, once more creating tension before letting go a bit more in the choruses. During those Human Impact go on a sort of “escalation” before (at some points) switching to something a bit more melodic. It’s a song of its own, but it also provides a nice way to ease into the more melodic, slower and pointed “Cause”, which makes good use of abrasion to enhance its melodic leanings.

“Relax” is a sort of… relaxed track that does not move at a relaxed pace. Whilst some calmness resides, it holds an undercurrent of tension more than its name suggests. It provides an uneasy breather at whilst carrying stuff forward and leads into “Unstable” quite nicely.

“This Dead Sea” is probably the most confrontational track in terms of sound. Like what comes before it doesn’t spend much time faffing about; it gets in and sets up this forceful, staggering grind. It’s where Human Impact really conjure mass and dread quite effective and just hit really hard.

Whilst talking about these tracks only covers a little over half of the album, the others follow in a similar vein and stay consistent with what’s going on. In general Human Impact stays a solid strike from beginning to end; Human Impact sound pretty locked in with each other and keep hammering away at building a unified, expansive sound and they do so really well.

There’s so much interesting stuff going on with the music. Sometimes a moment is a bit more bluesy; sometimes there’s a bit more of a country twang in stuff, but plenty of the songs sounds rather cold and dark in a dangerous city-like way. The percussion shifts around with great flexibility whilst retaining a hard-hitting punch; the bass moves in and out of everything else whilst holding a great deal of control and identity. The synth thickens out the sound quite well, really building on everything whilst doing a good job of helping guide the music. Guitar isn’t always full on; it knows when to pull back and come forward, enhancing the textural qualities of the music by a fair bit.

It’s difficult to find fault in the performances and what they conjure as the group attack their material with conviction and energy, giving the music most of what it needs. However, if there’s something that becomes a letdown, it’s that Chris Spencer doesn’t stretch his vocal performance nearly enough. That seems like an unfair thing to say due to his preferred style sounding like he’s at or beyond breaking point; something he pulls off brilliantly. That said, it’s clear that he’s capable of more versatility so it’s a shame that when everything else on Human Impact has a familiar, yet exploratory sound, the vocals aren’t doing enough exploring themselves.

Admittedly Chris Spencer still carries weight in his words. He also conjures a strong a sense of stress and horror from what sounds like reactions to societal issues. As he’s not constantly shouting a lot of the words come through clearer and thus stick more. However, on a few too many tracks the delivery becomes far too familiar, as though Chris found one thing and resolutely stuck to it rather than spread his wings. There’s nothing wrong with a commonality between songs, but some of them need more than what the vocals are providing sound-wise.

I held off on writing about this album as for a while it sounded like Unsane with synth. I don’t think I was listening to it properly though, as Human Impact is not that. Sure, there’s familiarity, but this is an album that explores whilst remaining highly focused. Grievances aside, Human Impact deliver a solid slab of music that moves away from its members’ other endeavours.

Human Impact is available here.
