Sophia: Resisting

Aside from a couple of pauses most of this was written in one listen. It’s loose, but it’s descriptive. Not sure if that is a good thing or a good thing. Maybe I wasn’t lost enough in the song, but I’m not completely certain.

Did repeat the last few seconds a few times to make sure what I was hearing was indeed what I was hearing.

“Resisting” is from Sophia’s As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours).
It is also from As We Make Our Way (The Live Recordings).

Also, here are links to reviews I wrote for (Unknown Harbours) and (The Live Recordings). I might look at writing about these albums again to see if I have improved as a reviewer.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Short fade in, suddenly a beat and a bit more context. A flowing, perhaps melancholic melody. Rising, falling, driving, pressing itself forward, creating a strong sense of mood. Noise; controlled noise, but still quite formed.

About to build, about to break and it drops out. An almost rolling drum pattern, cleaner instruments. A voice comes in. It indicates the presence of tears, then states that it knows not what is being constantly resisted, as well as what is being fought against. This is a determined section. It continues the shape of the song, gives it direction.

Once more the song shifts and once more the melancholy remains strong, though there is a sense of continuing on the words, though without using words. Clean guitar and the melody seems to be asking questions. The kick of the drum keeps holding the beat steady Once the beat returns there’s a bit more electric in the guitar as it shifts the melody through texture and tone. Well, more that it adds to it than it does shift.

Electric sounds become present once more. The sense of realisation, the sound of something in the background. A sort of descending and rising melody. Multiple voices join in unison to repeat the statement of the lack of understanding what it is that is constantly resisted and fought against.

The beat returns and the song becomes climactic. Rolling forward, driving forward, strong and supportive. The guitars continue and create a full, thick, expansive sound. It all drives on home, the vocals continue. Rather than a sense of coldness, there is a sense of the welcoming. Perhaps a sense of realisation and rising above troublesome times.

The beat drops, one more vocal repetition, then the guitars start to fade, revealing some underlying instrumentation. Then everything quickly fades out, leaving a walk into what may be the unknown, but with a sense of certainty in decision.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 802: Sore Wrist and Other Stuff

Alright, so I’m starting this one by announcing that my wrist hurts. That is rather annoying, let me tell you. I don’t like that it hurts and I should be resting my wrist, but instead of doing so I am going to stubbornly persist and try and get on with the rest of my day. Wasted a lot of time so it is indeed time to continue and do more things rather than less things, or something.

Well, I really, REALLY should be resting my wrist, but perhaps right now I will not, I am going to stubbornly persist.

It all started many a while ago, but really the reason as to why my wrist hurts at the moment is due to cutting down an invasive tree the other day. Who would have thought that when you’ve a bit of a strain in a wrist, using a saw won’t help matters? Clearly I did not think about this and as such I am now in a spot of pain. Somehow still able to glide over the keyboard, as they say.

Now that I’ve got that out of the way, I want to talk about other things. I want to talk about how I’m still somehow going despite a need for rest. Still tired, but far less so than yesterday. That is a major improvement, as far as I am concerned.

Still got a bit of a day ahead of me and am going to take advantage of what I can to get what I can done sooner rather than later, though there still is time for more procrastination.

Maybe there is time for more rest, but resting means not doing and so on and so forth. Maybe I should just keep this going and see to the end of it. I am close enough; there are only a few more words. Don’t want to give up before I need to give up. Would rather give up after I need to give up.

That doesn’t quite make sense, I think.

Anyway, now that I’ve said all of that I am going to jump onto another topic altogether, though now that I think about it, why wasn’t I writing like this for the past two hours? I’ve been doing a bit of writing (as one does) and it has been rather slow going. This is not something of which I am a fan of, but sometimes that is the way things go. I really should’ve knuckled down, buckled up and set myself along for a ride toward something that meant the completion of something else, but instead I meandered and wasted time. Sure, it is a day of resting today, but I can rest later. Right now I can take advantage of the time that I do indeed have. I need to do that more often rather than less often.

I need to stop putting pressure on myself to do things and just start doing things. I think I can do that.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:02:66

Not great writing, but I’ve written far crappier stuff.

Written at home.

Light of Transition

A photo of the sunset taken from the same location as these ones. Also of the same sunset.

I think that what I like about this photo is that it shows the sunset moving toward its end. There’s an idea of transition from day to night and it seems peaceful.

Also I like the scattering of colour in the clouds. I find it to be rather pretty.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-twenty-second Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow“.

I’ve included this image as as I feel it’s nice to think of the sun rising (both in the literal and metaphorical) in the context of the sunset.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

Ana of Anvica’s Gallery is guest-hosting this one. Next week’s will be hosted by Leya.

I recommend checking out how people are interpreting the challenges. I also recommend joining in. It’s a growing, fun community.

I hope you enjoy.

Lee McKinney of Born of Osiris

A photo of one of the members of Born of Osiris that I took for Culture Eater (gallery here and review here, and two other shots from the gig here and here).

I mostly like this photo for how the light fell on Lee McKinney. I think that it works really well, but I’m not entirely sure as to why.

Other than that, I think that this particular moment being captured led to an interesting show of form. Lee’s right arm has certainty in it, but it seems so casual and fluid. I imagine he was quite fluid in his playing; I can’t quite remember.

I hope you enjoy.

Lack of Sleep

Due to being exhausted at the moment due to the joys of my body deciding to rail against the idea of sleep last night, here’s a bunch of words I wrote for NaNoWriMo today.

Not sure how this will fit into what I’m rambling on about for the event, but I’m fine with how… lacking… it is to share here.

I’m going to try and do a bit more writing later, but I might not. Depends on how soon my need to get sleep becomes overwhelming.

I hope you enjoy.

Alright, so here we go. Strap yourselves in, as this one is going to be a long one.

I’m going to try and draw details out as much as possible. There will be a lot of repetition. I bet you expected that, but you didn’t, or something. This is going to be long and boring. It will be sluggish. This is what we’re dealing with today.

Today I am writing about my experiences in failing to sleep last night, as I did indeed fail to sleep last night. It was a glorious failure.

Wait.

I did get to sleep, but it took a while. Ended up with somewhere around three hours of sleep. Not enough to function, apparently as I’m only getting started on doing things a few hours after midday. Oh well.

Anyway, here we go.

So this morning I was meant to go bushwalking around Otford. It was looking to be a nice day for it. Everything was lining up nicely. One thing wasn’t looking like it was able to be done, but that wasn’t a massive loss. That was fine. Everything was relatively fine.

Had planned it out, though there wasn’t much planning that actually needed to be done; something that I’m rather happy with. It was all straightforward.

Had to stay up a bit past when I wanted to go to sleep last night due to needing to work on things, but it was only but about thirty minutes over. Nothing too bad.

Got ready, got into bed. Don’t know what happened, but sleep just was not working. I was feeling somewhat-tired and needed sleep. Needed rest to recharge, but no matter what, no matter how much I tried to, I just couldn’t.

Didn’t think it would last as long as I thought it would (the not sleeping), but apparently it did and thus I have been impacted by the inability to get some sleep. I’m rather tired right now. Yes, there are worse things happening at the moment. Let my have my whinge.

So anyway, got into bed, no sleep. Just not happening. Nada, nup, zilch and so on and so forth. I had my eyes closed and I allowed myself to be lulled into relaxation, but that lulling just was not happening. I don’t know why. I do know, however, that I had to keep on going to the bathroom. Lie down for a while, maybe toss and turn (rather slowly), get up, go to the bathroom. Repeat. I don’t know why I had to keep going or even how I had so much of a need in me to need to keep on going. I don’t know how it happened or why it happened. I have my theories, but they are not worth discussing here as they eat up time and I don’t feel like discussing my need to go to the bathroom affecting my need to sleep in further detail than necessary, which now that I am saying this I realise is not necessary at all, but you get some of it, so what can I say? Other than, you got some of it and not all of it and probably didn’t need any, so I’ll keep that in mind next time, unless I forget, which I likely will as sometimes things just float on by and I don’t remember them when I should.

Instead of remembering those things what I do end up remembering are thins that generally don’t matter in some way or another relative to the situation in which I am in when I remember them, which sometimes is fine and sometimes is not. Perhaps this means that I need to work on my memory a little. I generally can remember things pretty well, but there’s always room for improvement. Shouldn’t stop improving when you think you’re good at something; should always continue to work on bettering yourself in whatever ways you can as that helps with things, or something.

Anyway, I think that what I’m saying here is that I need to remember things that I probably won’t remember, but so long as I keep on working on bettering my memory and all that stuff, then perhaps I can get better at remembering the things that I need to remember. Might take a bit of time, but I’m sure that with enough time I can get it done. Just need to give myself the time rather than not. Though now that I think about it, how much time do I have? All I have is time and it probably is better to not thin about how much of it there is and should just make the most of it in whatever way that I can, depending on the given situation, of course. However, that might not really be an excuse of which I can apply to this, so I really should just do what I can when I can as I can and keep on learning and growing and bettering myself and hope that one day I can consider myself a well-rounded, experienced person. It’s a nice goal to have and one that anyone should strive for however they can.

So anyway. there was a lack of sleep last night. There was a lot of using the bathroom. These things seem to go hand in hand and frolic off into vast open fields of swaying grass caught in the wind as it blows across the vastness of the fields that just so happen to be open, rather than closed off.

Well, they’re closed off in some way, but where they end is often difficult to discern unless you just so happen to be where they end, so they appear to be endless and that’s a nice feeling. Anyway, these things lie down in the grass and watch the clouds as some sort of sentimental music plays in the background as the clouds float on past. It’s meant to be an idyllic scene that I am painting here, but I don’t think I can continue trying to do so. I don’t think it is interesting and I feel as though I’m digressing a little too much away from what I am currently trying to convey.

However, maybe the digression can weave itself back into the narrative of which I am building based on my memories of what happened last night. I don’t know if it can as sometimes I have a predilection for digressing further and further away, but maybe I can wrangle the digression into a position where it connects back to the thing that I was initially trying to discuss. I don’t know if I can, however as perhaps at this point I’m too far gone and should just admit that instead of staying awake to type all of this out, it might just be better to go and take a nap. Problem with that is that if I do take a nap it will be more difficult for me to fall asleep tonight and I’d rather has an easier time than a more difficult time when it comes to the act of resting my head on a pillow in order to get some sleep for more than a short few hours. That would be nice. That would be greatly appreciated, let me tell you.

There are other things that I could say, but I won’t say them as they are not relevant, nor do they hold relevance within this period of time in which I am trying to communicate a situation of which may or may not be of my entire creation. I don’t know as to how easily I can get this across, but across is what it will get and how is the question we need to answer. If we cannot answer this question, then we should still dive into the heart of mystery, not with hesitation but certainty in our mission to discover that which we do not know so we can add more to the collective knowledge base of which many of the populace draw from on every day of which they exist. We must do this so that we can continue forward and truly build ourselves into a collective of those that know more rather than a splintering of those that know less.

However, that all said, it would be nice to get a bit of sleep. I’m really starting to feel it right now, but I must stay vigilant and keep on fighting off and pushing through it all and getting to the end of this so that I can move toward the next thing, whatever that next thing may or may not be. I am yet to discover it myself, but I’m sure that somewhere deep within my sleep-deprived thoughts I will find out what it is, though I need to cross the landscape of my own creation in order to find out, really. It may be perilous and it may be full of danger, but sometimes the adventure calls and you just have to accept and get on with it, for the things that it presents are worth far more than the act of not pursuing them at all, so I guess I better get on with doing that, or something.

Maybe instead of that I’ll just journey to the kitchen and then stand there for a while, staring blankly at the fridge, then come on back. It might be on the smaller side of things, but right now that feels like a massive undertaking that my body in its currently-increasing density and weight might have a hard time proceeding with, for I can feel the limbs being dragged down and slowly becoming unable to lift themselves on their own, for somehow I have managed to put myself in a situation where I am finding it harder and harder to move due to the lack of sleep overtaking everything that I love and hold dear and near to my heart, so I must decide that now is the time in which I dive into the internal rather than stay at the external and find a way to go inside and combat whatever this loathsome beast of burden is. I must ensure that victory is the target rather than failure, for if I do not, then perhaps failure will overcome and I may not have another chance. Not having another chance to succeed where others have not may not be the worst of things out here, but at the moment it is not a choice I feel I have. The only option is to pierce through the heart of non-somnambulism and come out to the other side in a beautiful, moving and flashy display of action against a lack thereof so that I can make it to the end of the day and slowly find my way toward something that does not resemble a trout pierced upon the moon’s crest as it chooses to embiggen itself in order to form a great idea of its appearance to those who dare deny and defy the truth of which has stared at them plainly in the face for millennia upon millennia.

That all said, however, I need to take this action sooner rather than later so that I can keep on going. You see, I’m feeling rather tired at the moment and this is a bit of an issue. I’d rather not feel tired as it would mean that I could get a bit more done rather than a bit less done. The issue is that I’m not great at pushing through being tired, though of course I do make sure that I do try.

Now, there is a reason as to why I am feeling tired and it is something that I am going to get into in just a moment. I need to wait a moment before I do, so right now this is my attempt at expressing the idea of waiting for a period known as a moment, though this sentence will likely take less than a moment to read, so I guess I’ll cut this bit short and thus get into the reason as to my current state of fatigue.

So what happened is that last night I tried to get some sleep. I was meant to go bushwalking today and I needed to get a good sleep, but unfortunately I did not sleep for as long as was required. Instead of sleeping for a length that would allow some sort of acceptable level of functioning and awareness for a walk through the bush, I slept for somewhere around three hours, which unfortunately is not enough sleep.

However, I won’t get into what happened as that’s all boring stuff.

Turtle Skull: Monoliths Review

I think that with this review I did alright, then dropped the proverbial ball.

I don’t think I gave myself enough time to write this, but didn’t take advantage of said time.

Ended up writing most of this after sawing down an invasive tree which in turn led to me straining my right wrist. Fun times.

Anyway, it’s not a great review. Gets some ideas across and says very little.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

What’s old is new and new is new and so on and so forth.

If not enough people do enough to grow the genre and move it forward, instead relying on trotting out the same tired riffs with great excuse used to justify a lack of imagination, then there’s little room for anything interesting and so much of it becomes forgettable. Admittedly that’s probably quite harsh, but we’re so happy with music that’s more congratulatory it’s own achievement of sticking firmly within a thin veneer of style hiding self-assured smugness than it is self-assured in exploration. Nothing wrong with liking those sounds, but if you’re just going to be a tribute band, then what’s the point?

Maybe I haven’t heard enough stuff challenging the notions of psychedelic music in current times.
Maybe I’m just grouchy and don’t get it, for whatever given value “it” holds.

That all said, on Monoliths Turtle Skull do enough to explore psychedelic rock whilst not remaining entirely beholden to its trappings.

Probably the first thing to note about Monoliths is that it is a wide-sounding album. Soundscapes seem to stretch off into the distance through riffs drawing themselves out over punchy, impactful percussion. Somewhere among it all vocals often hover above it all, seemingly detached from the music but sticking close to it. There’s slow chanting, doomy, sludgy and poppy stuff spread throughout in what sounds like a rather compressed, yet dry mix.

Throughout the songs there’s a sense of a journey, though this is more due to the performance aspect over anything else. Scenes grow and move as the music keeps rolling forward. It starts with “leaves”, and movies into the hazy-sounding “Rabbit”. Once the airy stomper “Why Do You Ask? comes around, there’s more thrust and drive in what’s proceeding forward; there’s more certainty.

“Who Cares What You Think” and “Halcyon” bring the scenery to something akin to gliding over an area, whilst also containing meditative qualities. “Apple of Your Eye” strips things back a little bit and makes everything a bit more “hypnotic”, then “The Clock Strikes Forever” closes the album on a celebratory-sounding note; first by building into something massive, then crashing into a warm and pleasing drone.

The psych stuff permeates the whole album in the way a broken bottle of perfume permeates through a room; it’s everywhere and it’s unavoidable. What Turtle Skill do is lean into it, stretch it out and play with it a little rather than play it straight the whole time. Sometimes it’ll be something more of a “flick” on a heavy groove; other times it’ll be to give a sludgy moment more of a grip. However, at times the band lean on the psych stuff too much and it becomes a bit of a crutch, taking over the song more than it should. Not so much that the music’s spell breaks, but enough to make stuff less impactful and gripping.

So sometimes Turtle Skull are a little too willing to root themselves firmly within familiar territory. So what? as Monoliths feels like one giant song, it does weaken the impact a bit more than desired. However, as said before, the band play around with it a bit. The psychedelic influence is strong, but it’s not the driving force which helps the whole thing stand out much, much more. The mix isn’t the greatest, but the songs suffer little for it. There’s plenty to enjoy and get into with this album. It makes for a satisfying listen.

Monoliths is available here.

Avicennia marina Reflects

Might be wrong, but the information I’ve gathered indicates that the three main plants here are Avicennia marina (grey mangrove) plants.

These are visible in the previous photo I shared, but I took a few shots focusing on them initially (and also after) the previous shot, which… why am I stating the obvious?

Anyway, once more I think this is a peaceful, calm shot. The reflection comes through well and helps keep things relaxed, as well as the greener colouring than in the prior shot.

I also like seeing the plants look this healthy. Maybe they could be healthier; I don’t know. However, it’s nice knowing that seeing them as they are here means they’ll work more efficiently toward maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

I hope you enjoy.

Eastern Youth: 2020 Review

This one I finished a draft for a few weeks ago. Sat on it a bit to do some other drafts and reviews. When it came to finishing it, I ended up doing a bit of rearranging and removal.

The result… I’m kind of okay with. I don’t think I really said enough. I don’t think I said enough about the qualities of the music or the album and gave a shallow idea of the overall album.

I also stuffed the ending up. Will need to do better next time.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

Eastern Youth are back at it again! With 2020 being their first album since their last album, once more the band embrace melody, emotion and rich sound in order to produce the music they produce.

As Eastern Youth have progressed they’ve expanded as a band whilst easily maintaining a core sound. Often you know what you’ll get with one of their albums; driving, pumping music, thick and hard-hitting in sound, with a great deal of emotional content. Occasional simple-sounding stuff that belies an intricacy that deepens their music without overloading. And so on.

As such 2020 follows much in the same vein. Predominantly heartfelt vocals add to the emotional melodies; Tight performances help create a hard-hitting sound. However, this time around there’s (perhaps) a bit more focus on melody, as well as a slightly slower pace to some of the songs.

That said, very, very little of the album is laid-back; most moments of which pertain to initial passages. “月に手を伸ばせ” (“Tsukini Tewo Nobase”) is fine with playing with expectations before turning into something a bit more lively and anthemic, as is “夜を歩く” (“Yoruwo Aruko”). These two songs do a fine job of implying something before switching around whilst keeping those quieter parts feeling like they belong.

今日も続いていく ” (“Kyoumo Tsuzutieyuku”) also makes use of a quiet start, but keeps it very brief. Drums suddenly come in, guitar rings out, a brief solo plays, then things kind of pull back. There’s a kind of quiet, direct and pointed delivery in the vocals that rises into an outright impassioned delivery, matching the music as it strikes out. The song stays at this level most of the way through until it reaches the end where it finishes similarly to how it started.

Other songs stand out well though for other reasons. “明日の墓場をなんで知ろ” (“Asuno Hakabawo Nande Shiro”) has a great rolling, driving thrust to it and makes great use of its noise to really fill out whilst keeping the song feeling uplifting; Closer “あちらこちらイノチガケ” (“Achirakochira Inochikage”) wraps the album up rather conclusively. It doesn’t deviate from prior tracks, has a great sense of certainty and precision and keeps things moving forward the whole way through.

In some ways 2020 sounds “fresh”. Whilst Eastern Youth have been at it for a while, they still get right into their music with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm, even during the slower parts. Doing so helps to keep their music feeling lively whilst creating an emotional connection. However, in some places the album is flawed. It’s not due to any of the songs being bad; far from it. Individually the songs are great; whilst together some parts drag, all the songs sound much like they belong with each other. It’s that, considering Eastern Youth’s predilection for emotional content, there’s more than a few times when songs become overly saccharine. In places it becomes distracting and tiring, harming the meaning within the songs.

That said, it’s difficult to fault the band for how well they’ve crafted 2020. The album overall is highly competent and engaging, and rich in melody and passion. When it connects, it connects well and provides a genuine uplifting feel. It’s a great album from a band still putting their all into their music.

A Poem About Three Sounds

I knocked most of this out rather quickly as it was quiet at work.
Got busy before I could finish it off.
Now that work has finished for the day, so has the poem.

Nothing great. I’m not sure if I was going for meaning of imagery.

I hope you enjoy.

Three layers of sound
Outside, inside and closer
Not all continuous
Though their presence remains

Outside it is violent
Inside it is variable
Closer it is unpredictable
Though often it is unpleasant

Of these only one mostly can be altered
Due to available choice
And only one
Is highly undesirable

Outside may be violent
However it is of nature
It does not destroy
And continues blowing past

Inside it is continuous
Shifting every few minutes
Though remaining moving
Through artistry of expression

Closer it unevenly shifts
Through voices that often condemn
When their demands are not met
And so they stretch time’s length.

Pinched Toward the Side

The reflection at this particular point of the walk I did last week was quite clear.

As such, I really like how the reflection appears in this image. There’s a fair bit of detail coming through. Not so much that the image feels cluttered; just enough to give a sense of layering and idea of what is being reflected.

It’s a peaceful, calm shot I think.

I hope you enjoy.
