Hair Wave

One of those lucky shots.

This was taken during the performance of a band called Somnium Nox.

It was taken during their set supporting Wolves in the Throne Room.

This is a shot about form I think, though it’s mostly about the form of the hair.

Parts of the shot are flat, but the hair turned out quite well, I think.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Guitarist Motion

This is the first photo I took during the MONO gig at The Metro where the slower shutter speed worked out quite well, I think. It was taken during Meniscus’ set.

I think there is a strong sense of motion and flow without the guitarist becoming indistinct.

The colour and blur makes the photo feel dreamy (maybe?), but it’s still firmly within a form of being awake, if that makes sense.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 642: Blurring of Days

Sometimes I feel as though I can’t remember as to what happened the other day.

The other day is so far behind me that I’m not considering it. Of course though, it only takes a few moments to remember as to what happened. It was a routine and as routine stretches over the days, weeks and months, everything blurs together to form some sort of indistinct path being left behind in my wake.

That’s how it might feel to some but not others during this time of patience and waiting. For me, it’s just business as usual.

When I said that I feel as though I can’t remember, to be honest, I’m not sure as to what I mean. I guess it really is about the routine blending together and to be honest there’s a lot that I remember, but often some small details fall by the wayside. That’s probably the way it’s meant to be, I guess.

It probably also has a lot to do with where my focus is at any given time. If I’m focusing on one thing, then that will likely be what I remember.

The good thing about writing about music and interviewing people and writing about other things and processing photos and all the other stuff I do is that often it’s pretty variable, though sometimes it really does blend with each other. It keeps me thinking and thinking is a good thing, I think. To be fair, my brain doesn’t shut off most of the time and so I’m thinking a lot, but when I’m doing the things that make me think about them, I’m focusing on them and getting them done. I’m thinking about the processes and intricacies and the way that things are strung together.

Well, sometimes that is the case with music. Often when it comes to playing it (and sometimes making it) it’s more of a sense of firmly being within the moment. There’s a strong sense of being fully and utterly free and alive and one with the music as it moves into me and lets me become lost in its being and entirety. I am carried off to other places ans zones and the being still and forever moving is a gripping sensation, but that is something for another time and another day to discuss. I’m sure that I’ve written about this before, but right now I’m not going to as there are other things in which I want to write about, but of course I won’t get to them as this is nearing the end of the limit of which I’ve set myself.

Well, at east with all this being at home I’ve more time to write and walk and experience the suburb of which I am encased. That’s always a pleasant feeling, I think.

Maybe I’ll start feeling uncomfortable soon, but right now I’m doing alright. I’m enjoying this being at home. I’ve more time to do the things that I really want to do.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:34:05

There was a moment when writing this where I kind of switched off. Probably the strongest bit of the writing of today.

Written at home.

Stretching

It has been a long day so it’s only this photo that is being shared.

This was taken on New Year’s Day last year.

I feel lucky that I was able to get the shot.

You don’t often see a bird in this kind of form.

It seems somewhat-angular to me.

I like how the shadow seems to show an almost completely different shape to what the body shows.

I hope you enjoy.

Born Lion: Final Words Review

I can’t remember at all what this sounds like. I also can’t remember reviewing the album. It’s kind of odd as there are a bunch where I’ve seen the review I’ve written and gone “Oh, I remember covering that”, but this one just draws a blank.

Thinking about this review makes me think about when I was living in Glebe, however. I was able to sit in the living room and write away as I had it all to myself. The others I was living with at the time would rarely, if ever make use of it.

That said, I’m rather glad to no longer be in that suburb. If I went back to Glebe I’d rather with different people and less rent. It was convenient and I had a good few years there, but I don’t need to go back. It’s in my past and I’d rather keep it there.

Besides which, I still have a lot of time to myself, but I digress.

This is the third thing I covered for Cool Try. Based on having a quick read, I think I was pushing out already with this one, but like many of the others of that time the quality is highly variable.

There are some okay lines, but once more I feel a lot of this is underdeveloped.

I’ve fixed some spelling, spacing and grammar, but otherwise this is as it was.

Along with most of my review and interview work, this review is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going. We’ve recently switch to weekly releases and soon will be giving the patrons a bit more.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Born Lion formed around 2012 and seem to have gone from strength to strength since.
Now that they’re releasing their debut, they’re continuing their rise.

Kicking off with the fun opener of “Break the Curse”, Final Words reveals itself to be an album less concerned with stuffing around and more getting straight to what Born Lion sound like they want to do: make groovy, danceable songs with catchy hooks that will lend themselves well to the live circuit. This leads to much of the album being straightforward affair, dabbling in punk and rock without many surprises to catch listeners by surprise.

Many of the tracks sit comfortably with each other, whether it be the frenetic “Sucker For Punishment” complimenting the funk and punk-sounding “Suzie”, or the noisy “Too Cool To Party” leading into the quiet starting and loud ending “Weight Of The World”.

However, track six (“Violent Soul”) is a sharp contrast to the rest of the album.
It consists mostly of tensely strummed acoustic guitar underlining passionately sung vocals that seem to be about condemning those who go out and beat the crap out of people, with a beat designed to be clapped along to driving the song along.
It works for the most part, but it feels somewhat underdeveloped.
Perhaps if the vocals were softer it would work much better, but it doesn’t feel as though it fits well with the rest of the album.

However, it leads to “Rest In Pieces”, a major standout track.
On this track Born Lion throw in some more technical riffing that adds a great sense of menace to the song. Much of the beat sounds off-kilter and the band sound a bit more unhinged compared to the rest of the album, but it successfully keep the groove and danceability that permeates the rest of the album.

As far as as a debut goes, Final Words is decent enough.
Born Lion are a band that know what they want to do but sound as though they’re not quite there and as such, some of the material is a bit weaker than the rest.
However, as their voice can be heard throughout the songs, this strengthens the album a fair bit and points to positive things.

If anything, “Born Lion” is an indicator that, whilst the band are good, they’re going to get better.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 641: Slow Day Writing

I’m meant to be transcribing right now but the day has only just kind of started now, so to speak. There was a morning but I’ve been moving slowly. Still, at least I’m getting started before work kicks off and that’s a good thing, I think.

There was a walk and I’m still wanting to go for a walk but that will have to wait until adventuring tomorrow. It will have to be a short adventure, but it will be an adventure nonetheless. It’ll be an adventure of the “going for a walk around the suburb” variety. I love those ones!

On a more serious note, I’m just kind of waiting right now. Going to try and knock a few things out before the start of my shift. Hopefully one of those things is another review as I don’t really feel like spending more than a few weeks trying to write one once more.

This review will take less than that. There’s been about an hour’s worth of work on it so far but that was two or three times spread over roughly a month. I want it to go up tomorrow, so need to buckle down on that one. If not, then oh well.

There also needs to be a bit of gardening done some time this week. Want to get that all cleaned up so I can plant more plants and hopefully grow a few more things.

Why am I talking about the processes of my day and what I do and don’t want to do? Maybe I have nothing else to talk about. Maybe I’ve finally hit the end of all my writing. Still, I’ll push on, or something. Once at the wall, need to push through the wall, or go around it, or look in another direction entirely. No point in stopping when the best is eternally far away.

Now, where was I, other than at home and trying to mash out a bunch of words in an order that means something to someone?

I think I was at home sitting around trying to hit a target with the limits of words and the timing of the time that passes by.

I think I really should actually get a start on that review, but before then I should have a shower. Order is important. Need to feel refreshed so the ideas don’t become stale. If they become stale it’s harder to do stuff with them.

Well, that’s kind of not true. It all depends on your approach to things as well as your ability to get them done. I think.

Then again, I also think that I should take it easy and get paid to do nothing. It would be nice to be paid just to exist, but then again I’d still need to find something to do. It’s good to do things and even though I’m lazy, I’m quite restless. I don’t like to be inactive for too long. It doesn’t help me create stuff.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:03:28

So I think I need to tune out a bit. Some of this is interesting (I think), but I’m writing a little too much about things that I’m doing that I usually do. I know I’ve written better stuff and I know I still can.

Clouds on Two Currents

This shot was taken a few minutes after this one.

I’m happy with the composition, but I didn’t readjust the focus as for some reason I didn’t think about doing so, hence the blurriness of the land.

I think this photo gives a good idea of light pollution in this area. It’s a populous region, though nowhere near as much as areas a small amount of km closer to the city, but there’s still a fair bit of light hitting the sky.

Outside of that issue, I do like the massiveness of the clouds, and how that massiveness carries through in comparison to the land underneath.

I also like how there’s two layers of clouds here. They were moving in different directions due to the air currents moving in different directions. It was pleasant to witness.

This is my submission into the ninetieth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Distance“.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is hosted by Tina. The next will be hosted by Patti.

I recommend giving the challenges a go and seeing how you interpret each theme. I also recommend checking out what other people are doing to meet the challenges.

I hope you enjoy.

Yoda

Of MONO.

I don’t think I was thinking of the space in this shot when I took it. I think I was thinking about whether it would be interesting or not.

I feel as though the lighting and space makes this quite a dramatic photo.

I think form and motion, though somewhat-subtle, is expressed clearly.

This is someone in the moment of what they’re doing and that carries forward the most.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 640: Power Ramble

Well, yesterday was a long day. However, I don’t really want to talk about it. It was emotionally draining. Customers are getting a bit more aggressive than usual. That sums it up and now I’m going to try and write about something happier. Don’t think anything will come out, but I guess we’ll see.

So I’m sitting here as soon I’ll be doing another shift at work. I am not excited, if I am to be honest.

That said, the gardening has been done for the morning and I’m feeling pretty relaxed. I’m just going to power on and go for a walk at the end of it all. Hopefully relax a bit more after what will likely be a tense day.

There’s enough here to keep me occupied for a while. Just need to power on through and all that claptrap.

There’s a bit more light than usual pouring into the bedroom and I can easily get up and stand when I feel like it, if I feel like it. Maybe I’ll just sit still for a really long time to see how long I can sit still for. That would be a challenge. Would it be one I’m up for?

Probably not. I get fidgety sometimes. By sometimes I mean most of the time.

Well, I think that’s all I can cover really. There’s gonna be a lot to do today and I don’t know how much time I have to do it all. I guess I have all of the time between now and getting it all done, but whatever it is remains to be seen. Of course I actually know what that is, but I’m trying to inject a sense of mystery into this so as to keep you all intrigued as if I don’t then there’s nothing to bite on and it all goes out the window and my path to stardom would likely be halted in its tracks, therefore sending back down to the bottom of the rock and I’ll be stuck there for some indeterminate period of time and I’d much rather not be stuck there as I have things to do and people to see and why can’t I just stay on the continual climb without some sort of reset?

I think I may have gone too far, but it’s too late now. Don’t fall, don’t fall. Just sit in your seat, pretend it’s all cool and no-one will notice. Hopefully.

Of course, as I’m fidgety I won’t be able to stay cool. There’s so much to absorb and see and I’m stuck here and need to have it beamed directly into my brain so I can take more in with less effort, but I’ve got no room for the beam machine and I to be at a good enough distance so that the beam can gain enough momentum and resist the friction in the atmosphere so as to be able to get directly into my brain.

Guess I’ll just work then.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:57:69

A good chunk of this came out of nowhere. It’s loose but I’m pretty chuffed with the result.

…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead: X: The Godless Void and Other Stories Review

This review took far too long. I’d started it in early February and now here we are.

Most of this came together yesterday and this morning. I’d written a number of really rough paragraphs and started reworking those. Aside form a few lines and ideas, ended up scrapping the whole thing and restarting the review. That was yesterday morning. Probably should have done so sooner rather than later.

Not as strong a review as I hoped, but it gets my points across pretty well, I think.

The Godless Void opens with the appropriately-titled “The Opening Crescendo”, as that’s a lot of what the song is. It’s fine enough and has appreciable textural qualities but over repeat listens it increasingly feels like filler. The following “All Who Wander” makes use of the same melodic pattern, adds something to it and overall stands as a better candidate for album opener. It carries all the grandiosity Trail of Dead easily pull off whilst keeping it all sound tight and fully formed. If “The Opening Crescendo” was shorter and better connected to “All Who Wander”, or any of the other songs that carry its motif, then inclusion may have been justified. As it is, it feels disconnected and unwarranted.

“All Who Wander” is a standout track, though there certainly are others. “Into the Godless Void” is a driving, soaring song that seems to be speeding off into the fantastic. “Don’t Look Down” takes on a breezier, more melancholic feeling whilst retaining a sense of continual flow.

“Blade of Wind” takes on a rather triumphant, almost escalating feel that seems to stretch before it gives way to ambient sounds. “Through the Sunlit Door” follows on and also carries a sense of the triumphant, though in a much more grand way befitting of this album’s closer.

When it comes to the songs there’s a lot of care in the composition and sound design that helps them feel whole. Nothing veers into too complex or too simple; the layering works just enough and no more, the design helps keep things expressive and moving, and it all feels just right.

The vocals work with the song structures and make for a good fit, often seeming as though they’re following songs rather than the other way around. Often the lyrics seem as though they lean either toward the societal or personal; sometimes it’s clear and sometimes it’s ambiguous. What is clear is that there’s a weight to the words; there’s a desire to get across meaning and expression. Admittedly it’s something that Trail of Dead are familiar with; Their lyrics alternate between direct and indirect whilst seemingly going for an ornate style. Sometimes it hasn’t worked, but on The Godless Void it really shines.

On an individual level a lot of the songs work. However, the longer the album runs the more it drags. Dropping a few of the songs would’ve helped, though aside from “The Opening Crescendo”, there’s no clear choices as they’re all welcome inclusions.

Compounding on this is how flat the songs sound. Plenty of songs imply a peak but sound held back from fully reaching that point. The quieter sections don’t sound much quieter than their louder counterparts which would be fine if the songs weren’t wanting for space. These are songs that need more range to move around in. There’s a lot of liveliness in the music but for some reason there’s far more restriction on their range than necessary.

That said, despite The Godless Void‘s flaws a lot of its strengths comes through. Trail of Dead have crafted a fine collection of songs. They spent a bit more time than their usual on this one and it paid off. The album is exploratory without meandering and meaningful without being overwrought. It’s the right amount of tight and loose and has the right balance between words and music.

Jason Reece and Conrad Keely know what their core sound is; they have for a long time. The Godless Void sees them refusing to rely on that. The album does sound unmistakably like Trail of Dead; It’s clearly them, but as always they’re pushing forward and not backwards.
