Five-Hundred Word Challenge 409: Return from Smiths Lake and Another Thing

so I got back from the field trip which was fine and dandy. That happened on Sunday.

Didn’t have much sleep the night prior, but I managed to somehow stay awake and get off the bus at Hornsby (which was much faster than going the whole way back to UNSW), then went home in order to finish off the packing of the house so I could move into my friends’ attic.

Yes, once again I am in the process of moving house, something that seems to occur far too regularly in my life.

It is about as fun as one can imagine, but such is life.

Packing things into boxes is definitely something that is fun, let me tell you. There’s nothing quite like spending hours upon hours of your life putting things into boxes so that they can be moved into a storage unit for a while whilst you sort out your life and save more money in order to find somewhere affordable so then you can move all your stuff that is in boxes to another location in order to go through hours upon hours of unpacking them.

Exciting stuff.

So once more I move into another place. It has been a bit of a slog over the past couple of days, but I’m alive and things need to happen in order for other things to happen.

The third field trip to Smiths Lake was okay.

Actually, that’s a bit of an unfair statement. It was decent.

There was a fair bit of hard work, but I did learn a fair bit and I enjoyed it more than a few other field trips.

I didn’t enjoy the commute. It was lengthy, but it wasn’t a whole day of traveling in order to get somewhere, which is something that I should say is alright, I guess.

There certainly are worse things in the world, after all.

Being on the water for a good bit of the field trip was fun.

Coming back to pack everything I have into boxes was not fun.

Still, that much is done and today I head back to the house to move my stuff out and into storage, which will be the most fun bit of the whole thing, despite something that I cannot quite think of right now as I’m tired and whinging and need to go to the bathroom at some stage as I haven’t gone since I woke up and feel the need to go, which is something that I should do something about sooner rather than alter, but I’m feeling lazy so it will have to wait for the time being.

Once more at Smiths Lake I was a meal for mosquitoes. Wasn’t as bad as it was the last time (I think), but I’m still itchy now which is something that I find annoying.

Perhaps if I have to go up a fourth time, the mosquitoes will decide to leave me alone a bit more.

Or they will not.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:21:15

Slow, but this was written in a slightly awkward position where I’m hovering over the laptop more than usual.

Written in an attic.

Stretching Through the Sky

Once again, a photo of some of the Anzac Bridge cables.

I like the slightly uneven spacing between the cables due to where I was on the bridge when I took this photo.

Once more, I like the way the cables cut into the sky and segment it and I like the different cloud types that can be seen.

I hope you enjoy.

Blacksmith in Training

On the first day of Easter I was at Carriageworks to see some blacksmiths do some metalwork.

In these photos, I like the form of the person as they are about to bring the hammer down. It is not for a hard strike, but there’s still a somewhat-powerful motion occurring.

There also seems to be a deal of concentration and focus which is probably developing as the craft is being learned.

I hope you enjoy.

Instrumental (adj.): Reductio ad Absurdum Review

Reductio ad Absurdum is the new E.P. from Instrumental (adj.). It’s been a few years since their last release. Here’s a review.

Reductio ad Absurdum is a release that is more on the technical side of things, but the focus rarely is on their skills as a musician, instead focusing much more on how the music flows and sways between each segment, as well as the overall atmosphere.

There’s a bit of math and structure in each song, but its never to the point of sounding rigid leaving a fair bit of room for passages to sound a bit more chaotic and energetic to balance out the calmer, quieter passages when the need arises.

The way that each section transitions into each other is smooth despite a fusion of a number of different styles, the progressions never feel jarring; instead they feel natural.

Each instrument is balanced with each other quite well which allows the rhythm to be much more of a driving force for each song. This also allows a greater ease for the members to play off of each other which in turn allows the compositions to be much stronger and tight.

Whilst some moments could be considered a bit more absurd than others, Reductio ad Absurdum never goes too far into extremes. It sounds like a band putting their skills together to create something where the songs are the focus rather than the technical ability of the members.

The E.P. is an excellent slice of instrumental music that has great balance. It doesn’t feel its brief length, has a fair bit going on and doesn’t overwhelm. If there is a downside, it is that it isn’t an album’s worth of material.

Reductio ad Absurdum can be heard here.

Anzac Bridge Arches

On Monday I walked to work for the first time in a while, so I was also taking a fair number of photos.

This is kind of a companion shot to this one.

I think that the arches have been captured really well.

I also think that the light has helped make them feel rather large.

I also think that there’s a good impression of distance in the photo.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Fast Wake

Seeing water in motion makes me “Smile“, or at least want to smile.

The churn of the water seems to be quite concentrated to a small area, and yet it exhibits quite a lot of detail and pattern, and seems to be massive.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Stationary Trolley

This was seen last week near my work.
It was one of the first test shots I took with the new camera.

To me, the trolley looks a bit more like a cage seeing as it’s upside down.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 408: Sitting at Smiths Lake

So, it turns out that there is an internet connection here, which means that I’ll be able to be even more annoying than usual.

Actually, I’ll be just as annoying as usual.

So here I am, sitting here. I do a lot of sitting.

There are others. People are being social and I’m sitting here, writing about whatever I’m writing about.

Maybe I will go on some sort of journey… to the bathroom… at some stage.

Well, that settles it! I’m going to go onto an adventure to the bathroom.

It will be a porcelain odyssey.

There will be a lot of self-discovery, many events and many tragedies. There will be a way to a solution but only in the allure to get what I want out of the desire of selfish paranoia, will I truly reach a point where I can be described as a more humble person who can then live up to the image that I present to everyone outside of me, for this mask is to hide my insecurities and my paranoia.

There will be a grievous battle of most heinous behavior and who knows who the victor will be, for the outcome is not written in the stars and the message has not yet been cast from the stoned of the planet in which we all inhabit, and therefore there will be surprise, suspense and plenty of other things that lead to a great odyssey.

It will be forgotten for many a year until it is unearthed and then unveiled and then there will be things that I cannot comprehend that will occur and so on.

Perhaps there will be a conclusion so conclusive that the meaning and message will transcend the main issues with the text, leading to something that will reveal itself and peel back the mind as the rays of knowledge beam out into the expanding cosmos in order to glow the eyes and lead to carrots talking to themselves in some sort of reverse language whilst the sheep open the door to the tax accountant who can only taste borscht on a cliff of burning hedges.

Of course, when we examine the denouement, there are other things that we need to discuss when it comes to this porcelain odyssey.

However, these are things that can only be revealed upon further, and deeper examination as that is the only way to truly grasp the message of the follies of youthful hubris, but then again, perhaps that is not the thing in which we should be concerned, for there are other things that stretch out their tendrils when we are only doing some things and not other things.

Then again, perhaps I could think of something to write about and then get that out of the way, as Smiths Lake is a nice place to be at times, and it is nice to be among nature.

With that being said, I should also get food as it’s dinner time as of this writing.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:51:36

There were some people who read this after I finished writing and they thought it was great.

To quote: “Such good writing which directs to nothing”.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 407: Smiths Lake Again

Well, it’s a long day at the moment.

This is one of those ones that I’ve written in advance, as I will once more be at Smiths Lake by the time this is being read by you all.

So I’m sitting, tying away, thinking of the field trip in which I am about to embark, and there is little else for me to do at this point other than have food, have a shower, put clothes on and leave.

For once, I am prepared for a field trip well before the field trip itself.

I guess that this is a good thing, but there’s something about the last minute panic that really adds to the whole experience.

Being ready is certainly not in vogue with me, and I don’t know as to why I did such a silly thing.

Oh well.

Well, I’m sitting here, about to have food, typing away about things whilst thinking about things and that’s the way that things go sometimes.

I’m feeling rather tired and I guess that means that I’ve little ideas to wring out of my mind. I think that I might do wore with these when I’m tired, but it’s hard to tell.

Perhaps I need to think more about the future that is to come on the field trip that I will be on when this is being read.

It’ll be the third time I’ll have been to Smiths Lake and whilst I like the location, I’ve grown tired of the commute. It takes too long. Why can’t it be shortened by about half?

Just pull the location a bit closer. I don’t want to spend time on a bus waiting after I can no longer read due to the onset of some form of motion sickness.

I want to be able to not travel to this location, but it is currently an inevitability. Such is life, such is the fate that so very burdens me with the weight of the world.

What a terrible fate to have etched into the threads of my life!

In all seriousness, I am not looking forward to this field trip. It’s five days and I’m feeling pretty done with university. I imagine that once the bus trip portion is over, it’ll be an easier time, but I’m feeling quite apprehensive about the whole thing.

Still, I’ll go there, I’ll be a good student. I’ll do the things that are required of me.

We’ll have to see how it all pans out, but a good student will be what I will be and then there shall be forms of success.

On the plus side, I’ll be able to take a lot of photos once more and, seeing as I’ll have my laptop with me, I should be able to get some more processing done which should alleviate the rush to get as many done as soon as possible when I get back to Sydney.

For now, I shall continue to bemoan my completely burdensome fate.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:46:96

I need to get more sleep.

These are better when I’m not as tired as I currently am.

Or was.

Dreaming of the Big Catch

A person fishes off of a wharf, spending time patient and waiting.

I was really lucky with these photos.

I think that they’re framed really well and the colour is nicely balanced throughout each photo.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
