Five-Hundred Word Challenge 267: There are Buildings

Buildings.

There are buildings.

Usually when there are buildings, there is a congregation of buildings as they bump into each other due to the lack of ability to move around easily due to them taking up all the space around them, and their tiny legs not being long enough to keep maneuverability an easy thing to do.

Such is the way of the life when you are a building.

One has to wonder as to just how hard it is to be alive when you are a building, with your tiny legs and your lack of lengthy legs making it easier to get around with as little issue as possible.

Sometimes you have to sit there for a very long time, waiting for people to move in and out of you before you can go down the road and order some cheap, filling takeout because it would take too long to cook the food and they just want something that will be easy to deal with in that given moment.

Sometimes they need to find new places to sit, which explains why cities already are different every single time you enter them, yet contain all the same buildings. It’s just the buildings moving around once people are done being in them.

Buildings often can’t go into the bush when they’re really tall as all the shifting terrain makes it much harder for them to get about than creatures that are much smaller than they ever will be.

There was this one time when a building decided to be in one position for part of the day, then another position for the other part of the day, then ran a few laps around the border of the city as the terrain around the city was fairly flat and unassuming, therefore making it much easier for the building to get around than had it been a little more hilly, for then the building may have struggled a little more. After this was all done, it went back to its original position for a while. The building did not try to jump in any way as that would have cause problems of some kind and no one wanted to see what those problems would lead to as it was likely there would be a bit of a mess.

Sometimes the difficulty in being a building arises from being a building.
You can’t do much about your height and as you have no face you cannot scream.
Somehow you are able to get around by “sensing” where everything is, but there is no real way to communicate so you have to hope for the best.

See, that’s the problem with not having arms and being a huge structure with short legs; your options become severely limited and you have to be there, completely in silence and solitude, surrounded by many other beings of your type and those that are different, unable to communicate and unable to express, yet desiring greatly for forms of communication.

Well, I can officially say that I was not quite expecting this to veer into something that may be construed as a little sad, but it happened.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 266: In a Room Earlier than Required

It is earlier than I had anticipated.

I am where I need to be, but there is no one else here right now.

Well, there is one other person here in the room in which I am currently inhabiting with my body and thus using up enough space to prevent one other person coming n if the room is full, but that person is sitting on their chair, the backpack against the back of the chair, their head down on the desk in order to try and salvage a little more sleep, perhaps due to staying up far later than they had expected, unless they had expected to stay up late and thought that they would be able to catch a little rest before the tutorial for this morning began. However, they probably weren’t preparing for the fact that I would be in here, typing away on my portable computer in order to get some thoughts out into the wide open area of the Internet, for I can be a loud writer as I guess I don’t understand what being fast, efficient and quiet means.

Oh well.

Perhaps next time they won’t make the same mistake that they’ve managed to make in this given moment.

It is one that many people have made and learned from.

Well, that’s what I’d like to believe.

So we’re sitting here, doing our own individual things. Outside someone is drilling in order to help build the coliseum that The University of New South Wales thought it needed for some reason.

Construction moves as quickly as it needs to move.

Vehicles can be heard moving, creating some sort of motor-based drone. It is a sound as familiar and alien as it has always been.

The room is lit well enough. Natural light illuminates enough to see details on the carpet and the walls as much as they need to be seen, yet there is still enough dark to give the feeling that it is still early despite it being almost ten in the morning at this point of the day.

Perhaps this is due to it being rather overcast today.

Clouds are preparing to release a small torrent of water upon the area and some of its surrounds, for whilst the sun is a wonderful thing to have, we still need rain in order for the land to be healthy.

I am waiting for the tutorial to begin. It may be interesting. It may be dull.
At this stage, I do not know for the tutorial is yet to begin.

I am also somewhat unprepared, but that is my problem.

My fingers are gliding over the keyboard as I type out what is running through my mind, although there is not much other than “what will I type out next?”, which is not out of the ordinary.

I am listening to The Living End for the first time in a rather long time.
Whilst I have mostly moved on, right now they are quite enjoyable.

Despite this not being that good, I’m quite happy that I was able tow rite this as quickly as I did, partly because I did not feel as though I was rushing.

I think I want to move more into fiction than writing about life.

Breaking Over Rocks

Once more I was in the Royal National Park before the end of the university holidays.
I went bush walking with Si for the first time.
We went from Bundeena to Loftus.

Here’s a shot that I took.

I like the pattern of the rocks, as well as the pattern of the water.

I think that, due to having a relationship for a very long time, the “Textures” of the water and rocks work well with each other.

In looking at this photo I’ve realised that the angle it was taken from makes everything appear much smaller than it is, which I think is interesting.

It’s almost as if this was a model.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Mid-Winter in the Jamison

Here’s a shot that I took during the recent camping trek.

This is the same location as this one.

Ewe and I had reached the end of part of the walk and decided to take a brief break.

Of course that meant that I got a little snap happy.

There’s a calm and quiet to this photo, I think.

It probably has to do with the expanse of the land against a clear, empty sky.

I like that you can see the different levels of land as well as the water in the distance.
I also like how well some of the smaller details come through.

This is my submission for Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness this week.

As this was the first M.M. for the month, it was themed.
The theme was “Seasons”.

It might not be an obvious winter, but this still does show The Jamison Valley (well, part of it) in winter, albeit just past the point where it would be at its coldest.

I strongly recommend checking out Monochrome Madness and, if you partake in photography or have an interest in taking it up, then I also recommend submitting something. It’s a small, yet strong community-driven event that I honestly believe is worth the time.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 265: Before a Race

Despite a slightly delayed start, it was a good day for a race.

The participants were all there for the first time in what could be considered a very long time, the weather was good and plenty of people had shown up, filling the stands instead of leaving them mostly empty.

Plenty of the participants could be seen warming up, stretching, jumping a little on the spot, talking to some of the officials to calm themselves down and slowly walking small laps around some imaginary circle that they could see.

It didn’t seem as though anyone was against anyone else, for whilst this race required a competitive attitude, many of the participants knew each other from either previous years or other events, such as social gatherings or chance meetings in the same office space.

All the participants looked to be in strong form, each appearing as though they had been preparing for a while, although for them this was just another race in their year.

They were glad that it was more for fun than anything else as this race fell between other, more serious ones and worked well as a meter for how much more work they needed to put in before they were next on the track, using their body to move themselves as quickly as they could, cutting through the air around them whilst they completely inhabited the moment and nothing but the moment in order to ensure that they got to the finish line as quickly as possible.

They needed to make sure that, whilst their movements were as graceful and fluid as possible, that they exerted as much energy as possible, revealing their powerful motion as leg moved after leg, arm after arm as they glided along the track.

It wasn’t a serious race, but it could have some very serious implications.

It was still within the realms of the morning, but soon all the athletes participating would be lining up, preparing to take their positions on the track whilst also preparing to do as much as they could to tune out the crowd and strengthen their focus.

During the wait there were a few festivities to be held to celebrate the event, mostly designed to get the crowd excited for the main event, which of course would be followed by a few more festivities.

It was time.

The announcer began with their opening lines as was routine for the years that the race had been run. The runners were still lining up, getting into the position.

When it was time, they crouched to prepare to put themselves into starting position.

After a few minutes, they knew that it was time. The announcer had stopped their spiel and began top utter the words that they knew would tell them to start running.

“Ready.”

They were ready.

“Set”.

They put themselves into their final position before running.

The crowd was quiet, waiting in anticipation.

The athletes were as focused as needed.

The starting gun went off.

A bit slower than I hoped.
I struggled a fair bit whilst I was writing this, so perhaps I should have taken my time rather than made it a challenge.

Hiding

Here’s a shot of those two things in Sydney that people seem to like.

I like this shot as (I think) it’s not a typical shot.
It’s a slightly different view, revealing these two things in a different way by showing them almost working in some sort of unison with each other.

I like the way the closest structure overlays with the rear structure. I think that it works well, especially in conjunction with the overcast sky.

I also like that the shot doesn’t feel as though it is showing much, feeling quite compact in a sense.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 264: Sunny, Cold Days

Sunny, cold days.

Time moving like the tide over a barren beach.

The logs are rising over the chasm that we try to put between each other in an attempt for some sort of connection.

The ocean undulates in order to hide the rising crashing on the underside of its surface.

Clouds move in patterns that are always the same in that they are never changing, marking the surface of the land with their shadows and shapes, greeting whilst also becoming as fleeting as they are present.

The shade moves to get away from the sun, yet is always surrounded by it whilst the sun wanders across the sky in order to enjoy the scenery below.

Birds are chirping, birds are chirping, birds are chirping and the birdsong that we can all here is appreciated by those who can understand the mating calls.

Rivers move and stretch beyond the perceived visibility in order to follow paths until they need to be recreated.

Gullies break under the approaching bush land and forests that are spread about as far as can be reached in a single sitting.

People move around far faster than they seem, for up close it seems like a regular pace, but their size shows how quickly they are moving when seen from afar.

The scent of salt is in the air as the beach remains bright.

Glistening sand is revealed every time waves creep up the shoreline and then pulls back to the great body of the ocean that it shall always return to.

Winds blow across dunes and work to gradually reshape the face of the area into new patterns, whilst plants hold sand where it needs to be held in order to restore the land when the tides attempt to claim it from its location.

Earth moves from soft to hard underfoot as a journey is commenced and completed within the span of a day.

The traversal brings upon the scene of flowers in fresh bloom, looking toward the sky and looking for something to help them grow more vibrant and voluminous.

Animals scurry about on the ground, in the trees and within the soils, for their livelihood requires this as well as the livelihood of the land.

The soil turns over slowly, but turn over it does in as unrelenting a fashion as possible.

The air carries scents appealing to both nature and people and draw us toward them for greater, more sufficient appreciation of their source.

Rains fall, water rises and rains fall again in a dance that has lasted far longer than we care to know.

Just as the sun rises from just beyond the earth, so too it falls and puts on a vivid display of colours as its final act before allowing the night to come and caress where the sun has been, at least for a little while and at least until it is required for the sun to rise once more over the beautiful land in which we live.

I think the ending could have been better.

One Thousand Word Challenge 20: Suburban Days

It was a dark morning in the living room on that particular day. Some light was shining through, but due to how the house had been designed, it was not due to the window facing the sun.

The carpet, a mix of browns, appeared to be a bit more earthy than it usually was, which was a bit more than could be said for the brown couch that was bought from the side of the street due to the thought that the carpet would compliment it. Well, that was the excuse used to try to hide the obvious belief that it was a compulsory requirement to have a brown couch at some point in time.

The TV was blaring in the face of the current resident of the brown couch. The usual deluge of quality had not changed. Nor did its attempts in coercing the resident into forgetting how to think for as long as possible.

The walls, with a colour somewhere between a pale green and aqua seemed a little taller than usual. However, there was a sense of comfort in knowing that they were there, keeping the resident within the confines of the room, at least until it was required to face anything that could barely be considered the outside world.

As the resident lay there on the couch in the most comfortable position they could be in, unmoving due to the desire to not affect or alter the immediate cosmos in some manner, dust filtered through the bit of light, falling and moving through the room like the fresh snow of early winter in the Blue Mountains.

It was getting warm outside and whilst the living room was providing some relief from the heat, it was inevitable that it would crawl into the space where the brown couch sat and it was also inevitable that, in their state of fatigue and recovery, the resident would eventually have to raise from their position and begin thinking about either going outside where it was less stuffy yet hotter in order to take care of responsibilities such as the groceries, or try and put off what needed to be done in order to exert more energy than should be expected in order to fix the fan so that they could at least get some excuse of a breeze going within the room.

Both options were equally unfavourable.

As the heat began to creep in, it seemed as though the couch itself was sweating. The colour on them seemed to shift ever so slightly, but only in parts, leading to the illusion of patchiness. Yet the couch remained cool to the touch.

Perhaps the couch was as sick of it all as the resident was.
Perhaps it was to mask the resident sweating themselves, for the couch may have wanted to ensure that the resident could save face to some extent.

Perhaps this was all in the mind of the resident, feeling foggy, ill and dry, for it had been a very long night and one that did not need to be experienced.

It may have been being fed up with feeling sorry for themselves. It may have been the acceptance that they needed to do something with their day. They weren’t sure at the time what it was, but they eventually peeled themselves off the couch, slowly so as to not feel the need to throw up and leaving behind something imprinted in the couch that could have been their sweaty form.

Ambling their way out of the room and toward the bathroom, they could still feel the world spinning around them. It certainly made things a little harder than usual, but it did not prevent them from forcing one foot in front of the other. They were thirsty but they also felt the need to shower. At least they could latch their mouth onto the spout of the bathroom sink for a little while.

It felt as though it took an eternity, but eventually they managed to get themselves as clean as they could before somehow getting clothes on. Luckily enough they had sunglasses as they did not want people to know how scattered they were, although the resident did not seem to consider that it would be a little too obvious from the mess of clothing that they were wearing. Still, no one could begrudge the resident for trying. Nor could they be envious of their state of being, for they were barely clinging on to responsibility at the time. It was what was keeping them going through their pain.

Once they were out their door, the harsh sun decided that it would be best to greet them as strongly as possible. It had been mostly dark in the living room, or at least nowhere near as bright as outside of the house and for that they were thankful.

They were used to the sunlight, but on this morning the summer sun seemed a little worse than usual. Still, it was something that they would have to face eventually. They just wished that they didn’t have to face it now.

As they made their way, the resident could feel small beads of sweat forcing their way through their three-day stubble. Whilst the sweat was moving down their face, it almost felt as though it was hanging on their chin and their jawline, trying to cause further discomfort than what was already being experienced.

Their street was longer than usual and they were feeling the motion of walking more than what should be possible.

Everything that had lead up to this moment over the prior days felt like some sort of lead into the punchline of a cruel, unnecessary joke; one that the resident was done being involved in as they just wanted to get on with living.

Although they could not deny that some of the responsibility for this situation lay with them deciding to go out all night, they still felt an unfair hand had been dealt.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 23:55:94

I began this a couple of days ago at work, but I wasn’t able to write much and had to stop.
Having a small amount of time this morning, I decided to start again.

A bit slower than I thought it would be and I was also hoping for something a little better, but I am happy with this writing as I do feel as though it is a slight improvement in my writing.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 263: Back on Campus and Some Stuff that will Probably Waste your Time

Well, it was a most triumphant return of most spectacular proportions over the rising sun on a gliding vehicle that sliced through the air currents to make its way to its destination, although in truth it was just a return to an old building which had to be passed through in order to come to a new room to see a familiar face as my teacher and the way I got there was a combination of this thing that people refer to as “public transport”, as well as another thing known as “walking”.

These were both ravel novel concepts as they are both things that I have not experienced before in the history of ever.

So I came back to university, saw a bunch of people that I’ve shared a few semesters with at this point and had a dry time in a new lab as it was mostly administrative stuff today.

Tomorrow is when the fun begins, although there was some fun after the lab as I had to make my way to work which was more stressful than it needed to be, but it is not a story worth telling so it’s not something that I’m going to get into right now as I’d rather not waste anyone’s time with something that isn’t worth reading, despite most of what I write not being worth reading unless you’ve discovered some sort of hidden brilliance contained within the sentences that I continually shove into your eyes, in which case I’m glad to be of service to your  eyes and your gaining of whatever it is that you gain from reading whatever it is that I write.

Tonight there will be the catching up on lectures that I was unable to attend today and tomorrow will also feature the same after work, although at least it will only be one lecture that I have to worry about tomorrow rather than many more than I can be bothered to deal with.

Then again, anything more than a minute is more than I can bother to deal with.

I don’t know where I am going with this, but I should probably turn it around and talk about my amazing wit and genius.

I am so witty and full of genius that people bow down to the grand spectacle that is me whenever I walk into a room. They humble me with their praise, for I am merely one man. I may be a brilliant man, but a man I am only and one is less than seven.

Whilst I am humbled, I can understand why they praise me so…

Nope, I’m done with that.

So I’m currently on break, sitting here and waiting for my break to end so I can go back to work to do more work. My wrist hurts and it needs a bit of a break, but that will thankfully come soon as the day is nearly over for me.

Soon I shall head home and relax a little.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:03:16

This was born out of a desire to write (as most of these are), yet I didn’t have the time (at the time) I wanted to write something longer, so this is the result.
