Dawn Princess

Despite it’s massive size, The Dawn Princess is able to sneak up onto its prey without detection, setting itself up to strike and take that which it desires as food for destroy and consume. Once The Dawn Princess makes its move, nothing will be able to stop the amount of destruction (not even the little boat that can see it, as it is powerless to do anything) it will leave in its wake whilst it continues its rampage until achieving a meal it needs for sustenance.

Here’s a better name for Dawn Princess:

Seriously Oversized Boat.

I like this shot mostly because, even though it is partially out of the frame, Dawn Princess still manages to dwarf everything else with no difficulty.

It manages to look sleek and fast despite it’s size, and the windows have a nice pattern to them.

I hope you enjoy.

Sunlit Ocean

One thing (among many) that’s great about the ocean is how it can “Relax” people as much as it can put people on edge.

Here’s a shot where the ocean appears to be mostly calm.
I think it can be relaxing to watch waves break against rocks.

It can also be relaxing to be at a spot where you can get a great view of ocean, such as where the person in the photo is situated.

This is my photo for this week’s photo challenge from The Daily Post.

I think that the light being reflected in this photo almost looks like snow.

Almost.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

One Tall Building

Another photo I took during the “super” moon event.

I had a bit of fun when processing this shot.

The first was the most serious of the results, whereas the others were just seeing what I came up with.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 158: A Whinge About Heat

Well, here we go, into another day that is a Friday. It’s warm and all I want do do right now is sit here, sweating away in my underpants to the extent that somehow my room manages to become some sort of pool that I can wade in for a while, letting the sweet, salty effluent cool me down somehow as I splash around until a shark appears and decides that my torso would make for a good thing to bite in, thus letting me have to perform some sort of first aid on myself whilst I also punch a shark in the nose. Repeat ad infinitum until the shark is buying be drinks at the local pub.

So, in other words, there’s no real problem with today and all I want to do is nothing whilst I am somehow cooled automatically, but the chances of that happening are pretty low, so instead I shall soon head out with my trusty camera, go take some photos and gradually make my way to work where I shall work as efficiently as I can for a few hours before I have to head home and sleep and then get up tomorrow to do other things that will need to be done as I’ve been procrastinating a bit more than usual this morning, thus putting me in a position of having more work to do and less time in which I can do it.

Well, that’s the way that procrastination works and it’s something that I can’t be bothered to do anything about right now as the heat is making me want to whinge more than usual.

Wait…

I want to whinge more than usual because I don’t want to deal with the fact that it is a warm day and would rather not have the sweat crawl down my back right now, because I can’t be bothered to put up with the fact that it’s warm in a mature manner.

Well, with all of that being said, it will cool down later, and that is good, because then I’ll be able to head home in a cooler temperature and into my room which will be some sort of very warm room by the time I arrive, leading me to have to deal with the non-issue once more, which will lead to even more whinging, which will then lead to more procrastination, which will then lead to nothing else, or perhaps something else.

Hmm.

Well, with all of that being said, what I probably should do, before I do anything, is have a shower, then head out, then find a place where I can dig a hole, then fill it with water, then submerge myself until summer decides that it’s done with being here.

I don’t have much of a problem with it being hot. I just don’t want it to be hot right now, because I have no good reason for not wanting it to be hot other than I’m being precious.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:21:23

Well, time to deal with the outside.

Written at home.

Around the Corner

I’ve been playing around with negative space in some of my photos recently.
Well, that’s what I think. It’s probably more the balance of space overall.

At least, I think I’ve been playing around with space…

Here’s a shot of part of a building that I took.
I wasn’t sure about sharing this, but I ended up doing so because, well, I like it.
I like how it’s really angular and simple, as well as how the building contrasts strongly with the negative space in the photo.

I also like how perspective makes the two sides of the building appear.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.
You should check out what other people submit, as well as Leanne’s other work.
Also, if you’re into photography, I recommend considering submitting into M.M.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

The City From the Trees

Whilst waiting for one of my exams to begin, I took some photos of the view I had.

I like that, to me, the first shot makes the city look small because, to me, it’s far more representative of Sydney as a city.

I also like the contrast of the buildings against the trees.
These are not colourful or vibrant photo by any stretch, but there’s much more life and colour in the trees than there is in the city.

There’s also a nice contrast between the urban development and the natural landscape.
Although these trees are part of the urban environment now, they are still natural.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 157: Waiting for Lights to Change

Alright, so I’m going to write about something that happened today, but this is a disclaimer: there may be exaggerations of what happened, so consider this a warning. If you do not want to avoid exaggerations at all costs, then do not ride a horse on Tuesdays whilst wearing a party hat-wielding turtle on your chest as some sort of armour, using duct tape to keep it strapped to your body whilst swinging an axe in a seemingly-random pattern above your head whilst some sort of non-appropriate music, such as any song by Barbara Streisand plays in the background.

Today, whilst I was busy being a menace to the roads and the footpaths whilst on my way to work, I had to stop at some pedestrian lights.
It was a longer wait than usual.
The traffic starting and stopping cycled through twice, with no change to the pedestrian crossing.

There were people waiting across from where I was and they seemed to be wondering as to what was going on, which was not peculiar, as I was wondering the same thing.
The wait seemed to stretch out for a long time. Well, a long time for waiting to cross a busy road.

We kept waiting and waiting whilst more people arrived at the side that I was inhabiting. No one was seeing a change in the pedestrian lights.

There was hope that the red signal would give way for the green, some sort of signal that would allow us the joy and dignity of crossing over to continue on to the destinations that we were trying to reach, yet seemed almost forever out of our grasps, forever leaving us to wait for an eternity and beyond, for we were in a position of waiting and there was no end in sight that we could perceive in any way, shape, or manner.

It was the teaching of patience, for there was no choice but top be patient and continue to wait, wait, wait, until there was nothing left to wait for.

Eventually, it seemed that it would happen. We would all finally get the green signal. Slowly the red light seemed to do something, slowly dripping down the display and out onto the side of the light itself.

Slowly was the speed at which it made it’s way down to the ground, and when it finally did reach the surface to which the pole for the light was attached, it passed through in a manner that would suggest that the ground there was completely permeable. The light, finding this curious, decided to turn slightly and look at the low-key spectacle that was occurring right beside it.

Everyone, including myself, seemed bemused by the small event, wondering what we had just been witness to.

It began to slowly make it’s way back up out of the ground, then back up the pole that the light was attached to, then back into the light.

Then the light turned green, allowing us to cross.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:00:78

A decent speed and something that I feel is, whilst silly, is a slight bit better than other things I’ve written.

Written at work.

Buildings Among an Empty Sky

There’s not much to say about this photo.

It’s one that I like quite a lot due to how the sky is portioned as well as the visible geometry of the buildings against the sky.

I like how the two smaller buildings are reflected in the face of the larger building.

I think that one of the reasons as to why I took this photo is that I may have subconsciously wanted to try and capture the feeling that you get when you look up to a building and it seems like it’s looming over you, somehow looking far more massive than it is, as well as looking almost as if it will fall on you.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Emma Ruth Rundle: Marked for Death Review

Whilst reading about a few shows that 40 Watt Sun were playing, I saw that Emma Ruth Rundle was going to be supporting them. I didn’t know who she was, so I decided to check out her music.

I bought her latest album, Marked for Death after hearing a song or two and gave it a proper listen shortly after. I found it to be interesting in some parts, but otherwise unremarkable.

After the second time I listened to it, I found that some of it was more appreciable than I had thought and found that the way the melodies of the songs supported Emma Ruth Rundle’s voice to be nice, but I still didn’t think much of what I was hearing.

I’m not sure as to how many times I’ve listened to Marked for Death at this point. It’s a solid album.
It has a real weight to it that doesn’t feel oppressively miserable or dark.

Despite (or perhaps due to) their sitting somewhere around rock and folk, the songs have a well-built texture and atmosphere that underscores lyrics about pain, defeat and (possibly) fear, as well as the voice that delivers said lyrics.

The greatest strength of this album is Emma Ruth Rundle’s vocal delivery. She has a lot of power when she sings and is more than willing to make sure it is used.
She also exhibits great command over her delivery, moving through getting louder and softer with no obvious difficulty, always sounding impassioned whilst avoiding becoming overblown.

It’s probably the biggest reason as to why the album doesn’t feel as bleak and downcast as it could. It would be easy to enough to deliver the lyrics with complete fragility, but instead of doing so, Emma Ruth Rundle allows for herself to sound confident when she feels she should, balancing the heavier themes with an uplifting mood. It gives more room to allow the listener to appreciate and understand what they’re hearing.

Marked for Death is solid. It works well as an album and is worth giving a listen.

Housing Development

Here is a shot of one of the ugliest housing developments I’ve ever seen.
I like the angle and how this building is captured in the photo, but this is one of many apartments in a small area that were built with no regard for the (partial) aesthetic, feel or history of Glebe.

That’s what I really love about gentrification; people set stuff up because they like the feel and history of an area and decide that the best way to become part of the area is to make sure they’re working against it any way they can.

Admittedly, gentrification isn’t inherently bad. Places do eventually change.
The problem I have is that in Sydney, not enough people care enough about integrating the history of an area in with development.
They’d rather do things that remove the history almost entirely.

Oh well.

I think this is a nice photo, regardless of my feelings on what it can represent.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
