Bridge Over Johnstons Creek

I had to get my camera sensor cleaned about two weeks ago and got it back on Monday.

I headed into Jubilee Park on the way home from uni on Tuesday and took some long exposure shots as I felt I could afford the time.

This is one of them.

I like how the darkness controls most of the detail in this one.

This is my seventy-first submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I recommend checking it out.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 9: Losing my Faith in my University, Featuring Some Swearing Because I’m Edgy

So instead of sitting here for another hour and thinking about starting writing soon, I decided that now would be the best time to take some sort of affirmative action and begin pounding away on my poor, embattled keyboard and string together the letters that form the words that lead to sentences that allow me to communicate through the mystical, elusive medium known as text, in order to talk about stuff.

Yes, I am wasting a little bit of time by writing something that probably won’t have any bearing on how this will turn out, but, to be honest, I don’t have any strong or witty rebuttal to that, so instead I’m going to request that you all pretend that I came up with one and are amazed by it, as well as my handsome ebullience.

Today is a day where I find myself beginning to lose faith in the ability of the university I attend and some of its staff to help in my path of learning, although, at the same time, I realise that I may be asking for a lot more than I probably am entitled to.

With assistance from some of the people who help run the courses I am currently enrolled in, I have been provided with contacts of people that can help further my interests in the sciences and of course, I have reached out to them to try and find more information to work out in what field I want to specialise.

I’ve also been provided the contact for someone who, whilst does not work in an area I am entirely interested in, is still someone that I could have assistance with in learning more about animal biology.

I’ve made the attempt to reach out to these contacts and had no response. I find that more frustrating and annoying than I probably should.

I understand that they have no obligation to speak to me or acknowledge my attempt to reach out to learn more.

At the same time, I feel that in their not responding, they have failed me as a student who is wanting to learn more about certain fields of science to work out what I want to get into specifically.

Maybe it’s because I’m an undergraduate. If that is the case, I still feel that I am, to an extent, deserving of some sort of acknowledgement of my interest in their fields of study as I imagine that the best thing to do when someone enquirers about your field of science, you should probably communicate with them as they are seeking you out on their time.

I don’t know how some people feel about that, but if someone is expressing a clear interest, it probably means that they have a genuine want to learn more and not fuck about with what they want to know.

I could be reading it the wrong way and it could just be down to being busy. At the same time, with no response, I don’t feel confident in their ability as people who work for the university and it leaves me feeling a little less able to respect them as my superiors.

Again, I have to admit that I could be asking for a lot more than I am entitled to.

There’s something else compounding on the fact that I feel that my university is letting me down.

Wait. There’s two other things.

The first is the minor runaround I had when requesting to do something that I won’t go into details about as there hasn’t been a conclusion as of yet.

Suffice to say, I was directed to the wrong area, then when I went to the “right” area, I was told something else as there doesn’t seem to be any real communication between departments on campus.

It’s a minor thing, but a bit of pointless traveling could have been saved if the correct thing had been told to me the first time.

Suffice to say, when I finally learned what the correct procedure was in order to request to do what I wanted to do, I expressed my frustration. I expressed it calmly, but I have to admit that the word “fuck” came up, which drew the attention of two other people near the person I was expressing my frustration to, who then stared at me.

This is something that angers me a fair bit.

I’m not going to jump the fucking counter. I’m not yelling. If you work in a place that seems to have a communication problem, that should not end up being my problem. Also, when I’m calmly expressing the fact that I know it’s not the fault of the area that I have ended up in and am not attacking them in the slightest, that might indicate that you don’t need to stand there and watch me.

If you weren’t there to try and control what may seem to be a situation that won’t get out of control, then why the fuck are you standing there?

I’m probably seeing the situation a bit differently to what it was.

The last thing that is leaving me with less faith is the general inadequacy of the ability of staff who work on the customer service line of my university.

In some ways, it’s amazingly bad. I don’t know who trains the people who work on it, but they need to learn that recommending a patronising, almost insulting attitude to queries is not something that should be had, ever.

I know that I’ve given my fair share of shitty customer service, but at least I didn’t actively set out to do such a thing.

It seems that most (if not all) of the people who man the phones do not care in the slightest about giving anything beyond sub-par customer service. You’re not just there to answer questions in an insulting manner; You’re there to assist.

These are probably minor issues, but I’m finding my faith in my university slowly disappearing.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 22:01:72

It’s been a while since I went for the mighty one thousand, which is probably why I wrote this so slowly. It probably doesn’t help that I’m trying to be vague (and possibly failing to do so).

Oh well. It’s here now. A bit of an angry, poorly-written polemic that adds very little (if anything) to a conversation that may not exist.

Probably reading the customer service bit incorrectly as well, but at the present moment, I can only go off what I have experienced.

DISCLAMER: The above post contains swearing. If you don’t like swearing, consider yourself warned.

Fence in a Puddle

Here’s a photo I took a while ago and forgot about.

I was on the way to work when I noticed the reflection and decided to take a shot of it.

I liked how it was difficult to capture the reflection as an almost perfect “Mirror” image of the fence.

I’m happier that I got the reflection as it appears in this image.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Traveling Along Bridge Road

Behold!

A photo of some description!

I was going to start the morning by writing something lengthy and wonderfully uninspired. However, due to the requirements of responsibility, I need to go buy food and also breakfast at my regular café and a good book (which so happens to be the best book I’ve read since Finnegans Wake [which I shall write about soon]).

So, here’s a photo!

I took this last week on Tuesday after getting my document sighted at the police station.

I like how the line of the car lights feels a bit messy, as (to me) it provides a sense that they are moving quite fast.

I like how the lights in the shot are bringing out details on the road.

I also like how dark parts of the image are.

This is my seventieth entry into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I hope you enjoy.

A Long Exposure of Rocks

Here’s another shot I took whilst at Coogee a few weeks ago.

I like how the water looks smooth and misty in this one.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Importance of Handshakes

Handshakes are important.

Sure, some people do not put much stock in them, but a hand shake can say a lot about someone’s character, such as whether they’re someone who can be respected and will respect back, or if they’re an insecure, filthy prick of a person who only holds interest of the self in high esteem and wrongfully looks upon people as though they are beneath a said person, thinking that they are entitled to their lofty view of themselves for they inherited greatness rather than worked hard to obtain it.

Suffice to say, whilst I probably shouldn’t, I do put a fair bit of importance into a good handshake.

I won’t go into the details of what makes a good handshake right now as there’s probably more than enough information out there about how one should be done which might have the unfortunate side effect of allowing people who are good at being misleading learning how to be even more misleading.

Besides which, a handshake is something that someone should just know how to do, as it’s an extension of who they are as a person.

I don’t think anyone showed me how to do one, although that might be me just not remembering.

How I remember learning how to shake hands was mostly through the act of doing so.

Despite working in customer service over the phones for a long time, I still had the opportunity to shake hands with a number of people, and whilst I did not initially associate handshakes with personality (at least, not as far as I was consciously aware), I noticed that a fair bit of the time certain people would give certain handshakes and eventually I began to find myself placing a bit more importance on them as time went on.

If only I could put as much importance on my studies…

Anyway, I should try and get to what I wanted to post about.

On Tuesday, after I had finished for the day, I was hanging with a new friend who was waiting for her boyfriend to finish his last lecture for the day before heading home.

I decided to wait around as well as I thought I would be fine with killing time for a few extra minutes.

Her boyfriend came out, we met, he crushed my hand.

I’ll admit that I’m not that strong a person, but I would like to believe that I give a firm handshake and usually try to match the strength that someone else is putting in.

However, this felt more like the person was trying to overpower me.

I didn’t think too much about it for a few minutes, but I could not help but dwell on it as the three of us were walking toward a bus stop. Things seemed fairly sociable at that point, but the handshake felt very insecure, almost as though this person was trying to assert domination and telling me to keep distance.

If this is indeed the case, then the person has nothing to worry about as I’m not interested in his partner beyond friendship. Besides which, I find it difficult to show respect or regard for someone who tries to assert some sort of authority and dominance in such a manner.

You have to earn respect and not demand it due to insecurity of what you may or may not consider what is yours.

Trying to demand it does not work with me.

If this is not the case, then they need to learn how to do a handshake.

I would like to believe that it meant nothing, but, considering how it was delivered, I can’t help but feel as though it was not accidental.

However, if I’m wrong, then I’m wrong.

Garie Beach and Beyond

Whilst Ewe and I were ascending the hill after Garie Beach (whilst we were in the Royal National Park last weekend), I took this shot.

We hadn’t traveled too far yet (where we came out on the coast can’t be seen in this shot as it was behind a few hills), but we were coming across wonderful views.

I like how much of the coastline can be seen in this shot, as well as how green the land appears.

I also like how the clouds are sitting in the sky  and how small the waves seem.

If you’re curious, I’d recommend reading about the name of the beach and the people that name may have come from. It’s interesting.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 135: On the Mind

I have a certain desire to succeed at almost everything I do, and yet it is often overwhelmed by a desire to do and see as many things as I can, usually changing far more often than I would hope, forcing my hand into directions usually unknown and known at the same time whilst I try to gain some sort of traction on my thoughts whilst they run away, escaping from my mind and then going on a sprint, leaving my body momentarily confused before I realise what has happened and go chasing after it, trying to keep up and close the distance between us, but the problem is the mind is a mischievous thing at times and this can cause no end of problems when trying to keep it in check and under control, for it likes to do its own thing and I am merely the vessel that translates its message through words, actions, and expressions, and it is the master to which I am so horribly (and yet, wonderfully) enslaved to it, being lead around and taken to different places whilst thinking of things far beyond my reach (and not of a reality), until it decides to do a runner and leaves me chasing it until it decides to stop and hop back in, for it is indeed its own thing when it wants to be.

That is part of the problem of which I am trying to express in some manner, although, with that being said, it is a most wonderful thing and I don’t think I would ever trade it for the world, for sometimes the mind needs time to wander and do what it wants to do, rather than have futile attempts to control it continuously thrown in its direction, causing more problems than solving, thus leading to situations that may be unpleasant, unexpected, or some unholy combination of both that could lead to more surprise than could ever be wanted, for trying to control the controller can only succeed in certain times.

Those times would only be when the mind decides to give some control for a short period of time until it decides that it’s done having a break and decides to take off into the directions unknown and mysterious, for that is sometimes what the mind wants to do, although sometimes it would much rather prefer to have a rest in a park and watch clouds go by for a long period of time, for even the mind wants to rest with a good view on the odd occasion.

Sometimes it doesn’t want to though and instead take you on lengthy walks that lead to nowhere in particular, until you realise that it is you leading the mind there for no real reason other than you’re confused and not wearing pants for some reason, but it’s probably a good thing that no one was around on the way there.

Of course, you hope that no one appears during the return trip.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 8:02:16

I’m happy with the result. I certainly was not expecting this to turn out the way it did.

Parts of it are truthful and parts are not, as is the way of this bit of text.

Written at my (new) desk at home.

A Partially-Framed View

Another shot from last weekend.

Ewe and I had been walking for a little while at this point. We thought we were higher up than we were when we came to this view.

I like this one due to it’s simplicity and relaxed feel.

I also like it as it features the ocean.

I like how the land acts as a partial “Frame” to the ocean and some of the sky in this shot.

I think that this image has a strong sense of depth to it due to how the land is shaped, as well as the shape of the stream.

Processing on this image consisted of some slight saturation and contrast adjustments, as well as some changes in the light levels.

This is my entry into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Bare Tree on a Beach

Whilst Ewe and I were in the Royal National Park on the weekend, we came across a tree.

It was firm in the sand and far from any other vegetation in the area.

Its shadow, whilst not long, was strong and defined.

There is the possibility that it was just a branch that someone had entrenched into the sand, but that is not how it looked.

I like how well the light tones contrast with each other in this photo.
I also like how (to me) it seems minimalistic and quite detailed.
I like what it makes me feel.

This was my sixty-ninth submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I recommend checking out what she and the various participants have shared.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
