Bits of Broken Glass

Here’s a shot I took last week whilst on the way to work.

I saw bits of glass on the ground so I decided to take a few pictures.

I didn’t do much to this one. It was mostly sharpening and noise reduction (which was mostly pointless) as well as minor light, saturation and contrast adjustments to get it as close to how I saw it.

I like how only a small bit of this is in focus.

I also like how the light is shining through the glass.

I think there’s a good balance of colour and I like how it feels small and simple.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 126: Power Suit-wearing Student Rant

Now, before I start ranting tonight, I must declare a warning.

Warning: There are generalisations made here. Some are more general than others.

If you are offended by generalisations, then I suggest you do not read on and run as far away as you can until the following writing can no longer be seen and you can hide away from something that may be vaguely offensive to everyone (or nobody; it’s that surprising [well, not really]).

Now that the warning has been stated, consider yourself warned.

You have been warned through the use of warning.

So sometimes I have to go to the school of business at UNSW to study.

Usually it is for a chemistry tutorial on a Thursday, but seeing as exams are coming up, I’ve gone again just to study and revise.

Something that I see is a bunch of people wearing a power suit who are really young.

Anyone that young has not earned the right to wear a power suit the way they do.

Do you honestly think that just because you’re doing a degree in learning how to work in an office and do things in an office has given you the right (and privilege) to wear a power suit?

Wipe that smug prick look off your face. You may end up being my boss, telling me how to do a job you have no knowledge of, but you’ll end up being one of many, floating along from job to job, trying to put your touch on something that will inevitably piss off everyone and then bugger off to “better” opportunities because you have no idea as to what you’re actually doing.

Of course you will try and cooperate with people and work as part of a team, but we’ll always be so far beneath you and your high position.

I think I’ve started to derail myself here, so I’ll try to veer back on track.

The problem I have is that the right to wear a power suit is something that has to be earned. You can’t just buy into the right to wear it.

It’s something that commands respect and someone who is doing a basic business degree wearing something that says “you HAVE to respect me” when they’re somewhere a couple of years around twenty has not earned that right.

Even people who have earned the right to wear power suits still have to work to maintain that respect. It’s something that requires integrity and that’s something that a lot of people seem to not be aware of.

You MAY be able to grow into wearing a power suit, but if you’re wearing one almost straight off the bat, then it’s unlikely that you will.

Stick with something cheaper that signifies you are starting off and learning.

Besides which, you should be getting work experience at the same time. Otherwise your business degree won’t get you something better than someone who has been working for the same time you’ve been studying.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:58:11

So I set out to just rant about people I see who are too young to have earned the right to wear a power suit and I don’t know why I dragged people who get business degrees into it.

Probably because they tend to go hand-in-hand.
Any degree can be as useless as the other. It depends on how you use it, ultimately.

I think there are plenty of good reasons to get one.

I just don’t think you should be some big-headed shithead just because you’re doing a business degree.

Although, it’s quite likely that the majority of people who are doing a business degree and wearing a power suit aren’t smug or big-headed.

Long Exposure of the Iron Cove Bridge Duplicate

Here’s a shot I took on Friday.

I went out exploring after I got home from work.

Not being able to get shots of what I was hoping to, I headed down to Iron Cove Bridge and took some long exposures.

Whilst I’ve included the original here, I don’t quite like how it turned out.
It probably has to do with the lights, but I find the sky to be a bit too bright.

Other than some slight sharpening, I mostly adjusted the black levels and ended up with the first.

With the second one, I made the contrast stronger. I think I also lowered the saturation, but I can’t quite remember.

I like the second one the most due to it looking dirtier, the lights being less bright and it being being more minimal in detail than the other two.

However, I still like the first for how much smoothness is in it as well as how well it shows the bridge.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 5: To a Bell Tower

“An apple? You want me to do something incredibly dangerous and and all you’re giving me is an apple.”

“Don’t worry. When the time comes and you need something, it will reveal its purpose.”

“Thanks. You make this seem so enticing and safe. I’m so glad I’ve accepted to do this. I sure as hell look forward to this apple saving my life when needed.”

And with that, they set off on their journey to ring a bell so as to ensure that its beautiful sound, not heard for years, could be heard once more and put a smile on the villagers’ faces, as well as those who lived beyond the area.

It had been a ling time since someone had gone into the bell tower. Once a few floors of it inside had collapsed, no one seemed to be able to find a way up inside, even with the rubble cleared out. It seemed that the only way up was on the outside; something that was an incredibly dangerous task due to the sheer drop and very little parts that can be gripped.

That and the dangers that lurked in the area made it far more difficult than anyone had hoped.

Some people had tried and they all managed to meet their demise, so people willing to try for something so insignificant were few and far between.

So the person set out and began to make their way east towards the road that would lead them through a pathway that would lead up towards the hill where the bell tower still stood as a reminder to what it used to be and what it used to bring to the village nearby.

Many people were not fond of it, but found themselves missing its ringing once it was no longer there. They might still be annoyed with it ringing, but they very much preferred it being there as it was still a part of their day and, ultimately, something that they did enjoy to some extent.

It’s loud, clear sound would ring out in the morning and the evening, loud and powerful, waking those would still be sleeping and bringing a smile to many, as well as a scowl from some.

Life still went on without it ringing out and joy was still found, but it was still a small additional joy that the villagers could do with having at this time.

They had really gotten lucky when they had the person passing through. They had nothing better to do and managed to receive the hospitality of the villagers, so they decided to go and do it for them, despite them feeling it was deserving of much more than some free food and accommodation. Still, they went out to try and fulfill the request as best as they could as it gave them something to do and also allowed them to use some of the skills they had accumulate on a life of journeying around the continent.

The path they followed was fairly linear and well-maintained. They were expecting something far more disheveled, considering that it had been unused for a long time, but, luckily for them, it was clear and not misleading in the slightest. Despite the canopy above hiding the sun and the sky from them, forcing them to walk through the dark, they still had no trouble following what was set out before them as the path was apparent and visible at all times in front of them.

Still, despite the ease of the path leading them to feeling more comfortable with what they had agreed to do, they had wished that more than a small apple had been given to them for this journey. They knew that the village wasn’t the richest in the world, but they had no idea as to how something that was an edible item was going to help them climb the outside of a bell tower and ring a bell. It didn’t seem to make any sense and felt more as though the villagers were trying to pull one over them. However, they had to trust that they were provided with something that would indeed be useful as they had experienced far stranger things in their travels that were far more worthy of raising an eyebrow than this.

Eventually light began to filter through the trees, illuminating their way once again and thus making them walk with far less caution than they had before. The path seemed to become a little more worn for wear at this point. It wasn’t surprising, considering that not many people had gone this far, but they were still a little surprised as it seemed more as though that it was due to it being old rather than it not being maintained.

Eventually the thick woods ended and they found themselves moving through a vast, open area.

Some of it lead away from where they were heading. They thought that once they had completed this large task with a small payoff, they’d go see where the expanse would lead them.

Following a small incline, they found themselves making their way up a hill. It felt rather easy for the most part, although it became significantly steeper about half of the way up.

Suddenly the trek became much more difficult than it had any right to be. The ground felt much looser underneath their feet, but they still persisted as they wanted to make sure they would see it the whole way through instead of giving up and heading elsewhere.

Despite how ridiculous this seemed to them, the person kept on going up, slipping and falling a number of times, but not stopping as the sooner they were past this, the sooner it would be over and the sooner they would be able to get on with going elsewhere and continuing their travels.

After a lengthy exercise in learning how to continue to fall over and injure themselves, they made it to the top of the hill.

Slower than I had hoped. I blame the cold.

So I set out to write something a bit more normal than I usually would and it kind of sucks.

Oh well.

I’m satisfied with it so far.

Radio Tower

Here’s a shot of a radio tower near where I work.

To me, it looks rather ominous.

I do like how the shadow on it is captured as the light change is very sudden.
I also like that it seems to be taller than it actually is due to it being against the sky with none of the ground shown.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 125: A Whinge About the Cold Temperature

The fun of trying to type whilst fingers are cold and stiff due to the cold, thus reducing my flexibility whilst I type until they start warming up, leading to many spelling errors that I shall edit out later, but also affecting my ability to type fast, which is about as sad as it sounds (that is to say, not sad at all, as it;’ something I just need to put up with for a while).

It’s a cold morning on the second day of what is a four day weekend for me.

It’s a weekend I need to use to study as hard as I can as my first exam for the semester is coming up in four days, in the morning I believe.

I need to double-check, but I’m pretty sure it’s in the morning.

So, four days to make sure I know as much of a subject before I run as hard as I can into a wall repeatedly until I get through said wall, thus enabling me to be the best that ever was forever and a day.

Now, if only I could somehow make the temperature a few degrees warmer than it already is so I don’t have to rely on wearing gloves to keep my hands warm, because they’re currently not doing a good enough job.

Ah, the beauty and the frustration of the cold weather that is currently what is being experienced.

Of course, by cold weather, I mean cold temperature.

Really I’m just whinging about nothing right now, which, to be fair, probably isn’t that different form usual.

At least I have my jacket and pants on.

Pants are important.

Now, I’m not too sure as tow here I’m going with any of this, but I’m sure there was a point I was going to try and make at some stage, but now I just don’t know anymore, but at least my hands a warming up, which means I might be able to get a little faster and more coherent.

Oh, that’s right…

So I think I was gong to try and write a story about the cold. I think.

I’m not entirely sure at this point.

Obviously, that did not end up happening because I talked a little bit about studying and how cold my hands are, which are now very slowly warming up,  much to my rejoicing (as it means I’ll be able to write when I start listening to lectures in a short while.

If they remain cold, then I’ll remain unable to type well or write, so I should look at doing something to warm them up, such as start a small fire and warm them, in front of them.

Or… I could use the tea pot as it heats water, which could also lead to me having some hot water.

But how would I have the hot water? That is the real question.

I guess I would have to have it on a bowl with a straw.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:38:54

Somewhat surprised that I was able to write this in under ten minutes, but then again, this is a relatively uninteresting read, so I guess it goes without saying.

A Conversation

A picture of two seagulls having a serious conversation.

Whilst this was taken in St. Kilda, I still think it shows nature as a “Pure” thing.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Intervention

Here is a sculpture that was featured at Sculpture by the Sea last year.

I really liked this one. It probably had to do with it featuring a whale.

It’s interesting in that it’s meaning could be ambiguous or direct.

Perhaps it is telling the history of people and whales.

This was created by Mike Van Dam.

I hope you enjoy.

Another Sunset Over Marrickville

Here’s a shot I took last week shortly after finishing work.

I mostly played around with light levels, as well as contrast and sharpness.

I also decided to work with a few other settings to see how they operated and if I could get the photos closer to how I saw them, as well as have a bit of fun and see what I could produce.

The sharpness and noise reduction did not work as well as I hoped, but I also think that they didn’t detract from the images.

The last one is the original and is closest to how everything looked when I took the shot.

I like these all for the different levels of light and different colour strengths.

I like how some of these are a bit more “relaxed” and “dreamy” (I don’t quite think that’s the correct word I want to use to describe some of these, but I’m not sure as to what the correct word is, so it might be correct in this case) whilst others are more intense.

I wasn’t going to include the third one originally as I don’t think it turned out well, but I changed my mind as I felt it was important to show the image in different ways.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 124: Theories About a Non-event That Happened Yesterday

Yesterday, whilst a co-worker and I were on the train whilst heading home from work, I took off the beanie I was wearing and said something about having the balding look (as a small part of my hair was kind of doing its own thing and lifting away from the rest of my hair, whilst the top of my hair was mostly flat).

I should note that my hair is getting long, so the joke didn’t quite work.

But anyway, when I said this, someone behind us turned around and stared at me for a number of seconds before turning back.

I only noticed this as I saw them in my peripheral vision.

Now, I have to wonder as to what I said caused this person to turn around and stare.

Well, I don’t as, ultimately, it’s immaterial, but still, I am going to choose to wonder and theorise.

Perhaps the person felt indignant and offended as they were balding and knew the look that I was talking about. However, they did not appear to be balding, so I’m fairly certain that this was not the case.

Maybe they felt disgusted by the fact that someone dressed the way I dress (fairly casually) would have the gall to make such a silly remark as, being dressed the way I was could only mean that I’m part of the unwashed masses and do not have any right to say something silly or something that could be perceived as some sort of rebellion. This is also a massive stretch, so I’m going to choose to rule it out immediately.

Perhaps they were just offended by the fact that I chose to say something on a train.

Maybe they heard what I said and found themselves at odds about what to feel due to the contrast between the resonance of my voice and the silliness of the words that came out of my mouth immediately after the removal of the beanie that I was wearing, only being able to stare whilst they tried to sort out their confusion that lead them to question the oddness of the situation (which was not odd in the slightest, despite a young male with long hair talking about the balding look, which still doesn’t make it odd), therefore leading to a situation that was more awkward for them than anything as they slowly began to comprehend the non-situation unfolding in front of them, narrowly avoiding some sort of existential crisis that could lead to them becoming lost in a sea of anguish and self-flagellation that they would be unable to break out of.

I’m going to say that this is the most likely of the reasons.

Maybe they overheard me and were curious as to what I meant and had a look and, seeing what I meant, thought to themselves something and then looked away as there wasn’t actually much to see.

I think this is highly unlikely though as no one would do that.

Not ever.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:55:72

I thought about writing about this last night, but I didn’t, so here it is!

I think my imagination is still strong.

I think.
