A Shot of the Sun

Here’s a picture of the sun I used to practise processing.

I took it on the way to work roughly a week-and-a-half ago.

I’m not too sure if I’m happy with how these turned out.

I do like how the colours came out, but I don’t think they’re great images.

Still, I do like the cloud pattern a fair bit.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 120: Winter Soon

I’m somewhat surprised that it’s so cold right now.

Well, I shouldn’t be as currently Australia is approaching winter (or is winter approaching Australia?) and we get cold and pull out the blankets to try and resist the oncoming onslaught of cold and darkness that will inevitably bring about some sort of cold and possible darkness, as is the way of these things that happen when winter approaches and then comes and makes itself apparent like a bad stain on a couch that can’t be hidden as, for some reason, it’s on both sides of the cushion, but never at the same time for reasons beyond my knowing, therefore leading e to think that it’s just in my imagination but I always seem to able to find a stain somehow, so I go down to the shops to buy some stain remover and spend some time looking at the various food items I purchase, especially the sweet, sweet chocolate that is available in all its various forms so I purchase some various different kinds of chocolate and attempt to make my own chocolate souffle but it starts to get out of control and I end up creating a big mess, so I have to go back to the shops in a never ending quest to try and find a way to solve problems whilst inevitably causing ,more problems that continue on and lead me to buying everything at the shops which leads to them shutting down as they have nothing to sell and the truck drivers cannot bring them stock enough, thus leading to the inevitable downfall of the shopping system that exists within stores, causing some sort of wide panic that does not stop and continues toe exacerbate itself until it has to be replaced with a newer and more improved version of the shopping system that is undefeated in its powers that allow it to provide convenience at decent prices whilst variety remains undiminished so therefore problems get solved immediately and I don’t have to worry about the stain in my couch anymore, leaving me to feel like a happy camper once more.

That is to say, winter is nothing at all like that and, quite frankly, that makes me happy.

I’m looking forward to bringing out the blankets as I like the fact that I can use them on my bed and keep me warm and and, hopefully, well-rested, somehow, which will then lead to me sleeping soundly and waking up to tackle the day, lest a kangaroo tackles me first, which will lead to an inevitably fateful encounter int he rain whilst the drama intensifies to the point which tedium and moroseness become an unholy combination of my ass being kicked because I’ll be too busy stuffing my face with quinoa, my true mortal enemy, to notice that the kangaroo has the upper hand and can outwit and outfight me, causing me no end of defeat.

I’m looking forward to winter. Not to fighting a kangaroo.

Road

Here’s a picture I took on Monday of a road near where I work.

I like the emptiness of the sky and how the overall image looks a bit bleak and harsh.

I think I was trying to capture something else about the image when I took it, but I still like how it turned out.

This is my fifty-seventh entry into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness.

I recommend checking out what else is shared there.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 119: A Forest

Once upon a time there was a grand, lush-looking forest (if forests can indeed look lush, for it’s not the usual description one would have for a forest, as you’d usually here something along the lines of ‘beautiful’, ‘grand’, ‘lush’, or ‘amazing’, but that’s just my view on it, probably, unless other people share that view, of which then it is not just my view as it is shared with people who aren’t me, thus rendering it a shared view, although in a sense it is still individual as we are not a collective hive mind of people subconsciously taking commands and passing it off as our own decisions [or are we?], because that would be something unexpected, but I digress) that was as big as it was large.

It housed much beauty and serenity, except for the parts that were a beautiful cacophony of animal sounds and caressing breezes passing the thick branches and touching the leaves of the branches that were attached to trees, as there were many trees in every direction that the forest was in whilst contained within the boundaries of the forest at the same time.

It was a deep forest that went for a long distance and it was difficult to not admire it as it was.

The air seemed so clean and fresh in it.
When it was breathed in, it was almost as though one was taking in a large amount of wonder and energy, as you’d feel quite revitalised and energised as you’d admire the wonder of the scenery around you whilst you were in the forest, appreciating the sheer volume of nature that was in it.

People would go to the forest and be there for hours.

Sometimes days.

They’d go there to relax and unwind and just feel as though that there was still real beauty in the world that the cities had somehow managed to forget somehow, because there was a clear detachment from the reality of a concrete landscape that seemed so much real whilst in this mass of nature.

People would feel as though the cities were just some sort of illusion as they paled in comparison to what they would find in the forest.

Although, they would accept the cities for what they were and return, but they would still go to the forest and relax, as well as explore.

Birds would come and live in the forest and various plants could be found, doing their thing there.

There was one time when the forest was in danger of being logged.

Everyone who knew of it banded together to prevent this, and the power of their desire to keep the forest free from logging was so great that it managed to prevent the affair, letting it continue to stand as it was.

One day a dog was walking through the forest when it came across a whale.

“Aren’t you meant to be in the ocean?”, it asked.

The whale eyed the dog and said “yes”.

A bit slower than I hoped, but still, faster than yesterday.

So I wrote this in an attempt to give a lengthy and completely pointless lead up to one of my favourite jokes.

Aside from the fact that it doesn’t work at all, it works.

Unused Power Poles

Here’s a picture I took when on the way to taking photos at Pirrama Park.

When I took the picture, I thought it looked pretty cool.

I started working on it (before the camilla) and found that I didn’t like it too much.

It felt really flat.

I decided to get a little excessive with contrast, saturation and light and came up with these.

I like the “processed” versions more than the original due to how “stylistic” they look.

I also like how the colours turned out.

Despite not really liking the original, it’s been included here as the last image.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 118: Staring out a Window

“And once again, as the weeks pass by, we see Wednesday for what it is; Another day in the field needed to be crossed to achieve some sort of victory.”

At least, that is what the person thought as they stared out the window, hoping that soon, one day, all this tedium of endless paperwork that leads only to more procrastination instead of any real action could only come to some sort of end that was sudden and unsuspected, potentially throwing the whole office into disarray and panic.

But that time was not to come for a while, if ever, and pointless work needed to be done.

And yet, despite all their trying to force themselves to do so, they could not help but continue to stare out the window, down onto the streets below, seeing the outside world beyond them and desperately looking for a way out that would not require them to be courageous beyond the completely minuscule and token, for they were a dreamer and not someone who felt that they had any authority to take charge in any way, shape, or form.

They slowly looked upwards, at the building across from them and saw someone else doing the same thing.

“Someone else doing the same time within a short distance of me. I wonder how many other people within the vicinity do the same thing”, they thought as they began to idly chew on a pen, whilst still killing time before they had to buckle down and rush through every thing, lest someone noticed that they had stopped working for a long time.

They then noticed that the person was staring at them, probably thinking the same thing.

Probably.

They decided to wave at the person in the building, to see if any form of a meaningful gesture could be received in kind.

The person waved back.

It was hard to tell, but they were pretty certain that a smile was on the person’s face.

A sign went up, followed by one from the person.

A slow, but invested exchange went on for a few minutes before the person decided that it was all a bit silly and cliché, so they requested an easier method of contact.

Soon the conversation speed picked up and an impassioned exchange about the tedium of their positions sprang forth.

Eventually work finished and the conversation drew to a close.

The person began to make their way home, slowly filtering their way through people to the nearest train they could catch.

Once home, they felt as though they were bound to that office, slowly being pulled back to it every working day, almost as though they did not have a choice in the matter.

But they were able to have a conversation for the first time in a long time, and it at least made part of their working day more enjoyable than it had any right to be.

Perhaps, at work, they had something to look forward to again.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 11:49:01

Slower than I hoped, but such is the way of things.

Anyway, probably could have done a better job writing it.

Also, they can filter through people. Not past them. Through them.

I need to remember to not read what I write.

Written at work.

Watching the Ocean

On Tuesday last week Ewe and I went to Bondi for a swim.
Well, after I was done with uni for the day, that is.

We first went to Bondi Rocks as I wanted to so I could take some photos.

Then we got into the water once we were back at the beach part and found that the surf was lackluster.

Here’s a photo I took whilst we were at the rocks.

It’s another sacrifice in my great journey towards being a better photographer.

I couldn’t get the sharpness as good as I hoped I’d be able to, so I played around with the light and saturation.

I like these as they look stark and relaxing (to me).

I also like how strongly the blue comes through in the first two.

I also like how the last one is more plain than the other two.

The original is the last image.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 117: On Why I’m More Openly Trying to Sell my Photographs

So a while ago I mentioned that I was putting together a portfolio to start trying to sell some of my photos as prints.

However, it was just mentioned at the time as it was something that I was doing and thought I would mention it.

Well, now I’ve decided to include links to where my photos (and “art”) are being sold because I need to find a way to source additional income.

I could work two jobs, but currently I’m trying to keep pressure down to as low as I possibly can for various reasons.

It’s taken me a long time to overcome my being uncomfortable with marketing my product to this extent as I don’t feel I have much of a right to push anything I’m selling onto other people. I also don’t feel that I’m a good photographer and have a really long way to go before I could be classified as anything resembling good.

With that being said, I’m in a position where any additional income is certainly going to help.

I like the job that I have and I’m really happy with the fact treat they’ll allow me to work as little as I do. I’m in a good environment surrounded by people who I get along with and that makes me very happy.

There’s still a need for extra money though as I’ve debts to pay off and living costs.

So, I’ve decided to include links to where my stuff can be purchased in a more open area, rather than hidden away on my “about” page.

Now, I’m not trying to get people to feel sorry for me in any way. The fact is, I know that I’ve put myself in my situation and ultimately it’s for me to deal with (it’s not too bad anyway, but things are a bit more of a struggle). Hence why I’m not running a donation thing.

Once I’m out of debt, I’d also like to be able to see if I can maintain something resembling a stable income from what I’m selling as that would mean I need to worry less about finances in general.

So… yeah. This is kind of a plug. At the end of the day, if people don’t buy anything, I’m not going to be angry or bitter because that’s their choice.

If you decide you like anything that I’ve got and want to buy it, that’s awesome. If it’s not available and you want it, let me know and I’ll make it available.

If you don’t want anything but decide to share what I’ve got for for purchase, then that is also awesome.

If you don’t want anything but enjoy my stuff or are just passing through, that’s also awesome.

That’s all I have to say at this stage. I don’t have more as I don’t like promoting myself and am pretty inexperienced with the process.

Also, yes; The Ugliest Shirt Ever is meant to be absurd.

Well, that’s it for me.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:00:83

So an interesting thing with this one.

Part of it was written at work and at home.

I didn’t have enough time to finish it at work because I was at work and work needed to be done.

That covered 8:16:32.
I finished it off just now and that was 01:44:51.

It was odd as I had to get back into the mindset of this one as I wasn’t in the same place by the time I resumed, which kind of works against why I do these, but at the same time doesn’t. I think.

Anyway…

So the reason why I wrote this is that I felt the need to explain why I now have links to where some of my photos can be bought openly displayed instead of just in the “about” page.

So yeah.

Hopefully it doesn’t read like a sympathy grab.

Camellia Japonica

Well, I think this is one.

I’m not entirely sure.

This is a photo I took at UNSW almost two weeks ago.
I decided to make it another sacrifice on my quest.. nay… quest… to become the best.

Uhhh…

It was another sacrifice on my work to learning the processing side of photography.

I like how most of these turned out.

For me, a lot of these have to do with how I’ve managed to luck out and use contrast and saturation (as well as light) to highlight various details.

The last one is the original image.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 116: A Rant

A list of things that make me angry.

well, except for it being a list, it’s just one thing.

You know what really annoys me?

People who walk around and look at their phones, not paying any attention to where they’re going.
There is a whole world out there and you’re just ignoring it, not soaking in your surroundings (although, with that being said, sometimes when you become too familiar with your surroundings, you are going to probably ignore them).

This isn’t why they annoy me.

The reason as to why they may me annoyed is that they aren’t looking where they’re going, causing people to perhaps suddenly move out of the way or be bumped into because some idiot decided that instead of doing the incredibly arduous task of preening their eyes away from a small screen and deciding to display a tiny amount of respect and look where they’re going, it would be better to display contempt for basic action and walk around, potentially putting other people out of the way or at risk because looking down at whatever your device is is significantly more important than being a little bit less selfish.

Lets say that, you’re looking down at your phone, going down a flight of stairs (UNSW has  set of a multiples sets of stairs [yes, a set of multiple sets of stairs]) with some of varying steepness compared to the others in this set. If you’re not paying attention to where you’re going because you have “more important things” to look at and you walk right into someone whilst on the stairs, knock them down and then they get injured, then you’re an idiot and an asshole.

I haven’t seen this happen, but I have seen a number of people paying attention to their phones on these stairs.

If you’re crossing a road and instead of paying attention, you cross whilst traffic is flowing and someone hits you (because they didn’t have enough time to stop; not because they weren’t paying attention), you deserve to be hit. You deserve the injuries that you sustain because of your blatant idiocy. It’s not anyone else’s fault that you decide to not look where you’re going and you can only blame yourself that you caused a situation that was not only bad for yourself, but also bad for those around you.

Now, I know that this is a little extreme, but people who do this really annoy me a lot.

It’s not the worst thing in the world, true. I will openly admit that.

I just don’t understand as to how some people can be so blatantly selfish to the point that everyone else around them could be put into a position that’s dangerous.

You shouldn’t be looking at your device when you’re walking around. You should be looking around you and making sure you’re not causing a problem for everyone else.

Anyway, that’s my rant for the day. Now it is time for me to stop procrastinating.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:44:37

To be fair, it doesn’t annoy me as much as this implies (probably), but I do think that if something bad happens because you chose to not pay attention, then (outside of a few circumstances), you are fully responsible.

I know I’ve been guilty of doing this myself.
