Blurred Church

I didn’t know if I was going to put this up or not as I like the photo but I wasn’t sure of the quality of it. By chance I came across a photo challenge so I decided to post this as a submission. “Blur” is the theme and in a way I think this photo captures it in a sense.

I was getting a lift part of the way home after work one afternoon two weeks ago when it began to rain heavily.

I decided to take the opportunity to take a few photos through the front window of the car.

Some of the photos turned out nicely and some didn’t, but I still liked the result on all of them.

This one is a shot of part of St. James’ Church.

It’s not the greatest photo out there but I really like how the wet window blurs everything and makes it look a little vague.

To me, it evokes a sense of being uncertain of what is ahead of you.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 9: Boring Story

Once again I do not know what to write about.
I think it’s funny that I’m more easily able to write about not knowing what to write about than I am able to write about something else.

I’ll see how much I can write in a stream-of-conscious fashion, even though that’s how I usually write (I think).

There was once a person who was sipping from a cup of tea.
Their sips were slow and methodical; almost as if they were intentionally drinking in the style they were.

They could feel the wisps of steam gently kiss their face as the aromas tickled their nostrils and the flavours danced gracefully on their tongue.

As they moved the round mug from their face and toward their desk a small crease in the corners of their mouth appeared, finding deep satisfaction in their hot drink.

The cup met the desk with a quiet thud, resting gently against the lacquered mahogany.

The person reclined in their chair, soaking in the morning sun peering through the window that was greeting them whilst they relaxed and found a brief moment of clarity.

The person closed their eyes and let their mind wander through fields of green and thoughts of motion as poetry and the strength of the human form when moving to rhythm to embody it; to give it form.

They reopened their eyes and adjusted themselves to be upright so they could reach for their tea to sip the remaining liquid.

Once they finished it, they rose from their seated position and casually wandered to their kitchen to boil more water for a second helping of tea for their morning.

Normally they wouldn’t do this but this day was a special day, for it was a day that they were able to relax as they had been working for a large consecutive number of days.

It was more than fifteen.

They waited until the waited began to boil. Once it did, they carefully removed the kettle from the stove and poured it into their mug, filling it close to the top. They then returned to where they were sitting previously and after a few minutes began to sip again.

As they used the same bag as before, the tea wasn’t as strong.
Despite its reduced state, the person still found the tea to be wonderful.

After a while they fell into a deep sleep and dreamed of things they wanted to do in the future; travel, recreation and education-based activities that would help them feel as though they were having a fulfilling life the way they dictated.

They slept long and peacefully.

They woke up slowly and, finding that their tea was still warm, resumed sipping it peacefully, enjoying the morning sun until they decided to get changed and head out to take on the day that presented itself to them.

The end.

That’s all I can muster.
It’s certainly not the best thing I’ve written but… it’s not the best thing I’ve written.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 20:58:67

Might be a few seconds off as I accidentally stopped the stopwatch halfway through.

A bit faster than last night but not as fast as I hoped.
Will be faster tomorrow.

The Sky over a River

This is a picture I took whilst heading to a birthday celebration.

I decided to walk through a park as it was the easiest route for me.
When I was on a small bridge over a river I saw the opportunity to take this photo, so I took it.

I’m not entirely sure if the body of water is a river, but I do know that it connects to Kensington Ponds.

I’m not entirely sure if this picture is relaxing, majestic or both.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 8: The Cycle to Uni (and Beyond)

Thursday was the first time in a long while that I had cycled to uni.
It kind of showed.

After having a fairly busy five-and-a-half hours at work I took to my bike and began a not-so-lengthy journey.

Getting to the Sydney Harbour Bridge was, as always, a straightforward affair.
Actually the whole thing was quite straightforward.

When I reached King Street was when my lack of cycling there (or anywhere for the past few weeks) began to take effect as I struggled a slight bit on the uphill portion.

I also struggled with traveling along Norton Street but I was able to get past it faster than I had expected.

Once I reached Anzac parade, the cycle became much easier for me as it was mostly flat from there. I was able to go a lot faster and managed to get to Uni with time to spare.

It took a total of fifty-seven minutes and forty-three seconds which isn’t my fastest time but I’m going to be able to do it a lot faster next time.

I have ninety minutes to get from work to uni.
The plan was always to get back into cycling there but I didn’t for the first three weeks I had to attend and two of those trips took the full ninety minutes.
Both were from work. The other was from home (as I was ill on the day).

It shouldn’t take that long. The distance traveled is less than fifteen kilometers.

I now have more incentive to cycle (outside of the enjoyment of cycling) so I’m going to be doing that a lot more.

It’s not just to uni that, for me, cycling is faster.
On average, I can get to and from work in less time than catching public transport.

Anyway, once I finished up at uni I headed to a liquor store as I was heading to a party the following day.

Cycling home with study material, a camera, three bottles of alcohol and a change of clothes isn’t exactly fun, but I somehow did it.

Nothing broke in my bag and the traffic was fairly tame, albeit somewhat heavy.

I don’t plan on ever doing it again though as the weight caused the bag straps to dig into my shoulders a lot which left me feeling fairly sore once I got home.

I was hoping to do a bit of cycling this weekend but unfortunately the weather got in the way (as well as studying and thankfully music as well), so I resume cycling tomorrow.

I plan to get back to cycling the majority of the time so I can cut down on travel cost, time and also so I can do something I find more enjoyable than sitting on a bus and waiting.

I hope it doesn’t rain during the week as, whilst I will do it, I don’t often enjoy cycling in the rain.

I don’t think it’s any better than other travel options; it’s what I prefer.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 23:55:74

Getting slower.
I’m going to try and halve that for the next one.

Looking Out

This is an adaptation of a picture that Ewe took of me back in 2010.
We had known each other for a few months at this point.
We were walking through Balls Head until we reached a rock we always stop at to sit and appreciate surroundings.

Usually we have a serious conversation there as well as we’re fairly intense at times, but I digress.

I thought it would be a good idea to take pictures of us appearing solitary and introspective so we did just that.

I did not own a camera at the time but I did have a camera attachment for a PSP and, as I also owned a PSP, we were using it to take the photos.

Recently I was putting together a portfolio as I’m looking to sell some of my photos as prints.
It’s not something I’m a massive fan of but I’m trying to get a bit of extra cash at the moment so I thought I would give it a go.

Unfortunately that reads as a plug. It is not.

So I went through all the photos I had taken which included the ones I had taken with my PSP.

I came across the photos taken at Balls Head and included them with the portfolio but separate from the main photos.

Last weekend I decided I would try and adapt the one Ewe took of me as I really liked the photo and wanted to see I could do it.

I like the result a lot.
Most of the time I do stupid pictures in MS Paint so I’m rather happy this turned out well.
It doesn’t quite capture the photo the way I thought it would as the details are a bit more vague but it seems to convey the same emotions.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 7: Uni Lectures are Lost on me

Here’s one that I was going to write about last year before I started writing with frequency again.

I ended up putting it aside and kind of moved on but now that I’ve been doing a fair bit of studying over the past few days it seemed appropriate to get this knocked out now.

Uni lectures are lost on me. I’m not sure as to why.
I understand all the words and what they mean. I have context.
I don’t absorb all of it.

I sat at my dining table for roughly four-and-a-half hours taking notes from a lecture that is just under two hours today (all the lectures are recorded).

HOW DO PEOPLE TAKE NOTES SO FAST?!

Are they genetically engineered to take notes faster than I?

I’d like to believe that is the case, but I know it to not be the truth.

I know that the kids doing stats are just faster than I.

I’m still quite young myself but there is such a great difference between how I do things and how the people a few years younger than I do things that I may as well refer to them as kids.

Well, it’s really because they’re younger than I but that has nothing to do with this.

Maybe it does.

I don’t know.

Anyway, I’m going to have to read my notes over and over and over as whilst I enjoy learning, the lectures aren’t penetrating my mind as well as I believe they should.

I imagine they will eventually but for now it’s leaving me feeling bewildered most of the time.

My mind is picking things up and then immediately throwing them out as suddenly new information appears whilst telling my hands to write faster but my hands can’t move fast enough (yet).

I can’t blame the lectures for being dense with information as I think they have a good amount. My lecturer provides the information well and I’m seldom confused about what is being said.

Maybe it’s how stats operate. You’re not meant to keep up or know. You’re just meant to do.

Maybe that means that the lectures are preparing us in the best way possible and that my not-absorbing all the information is key to my success as I will end up the best student of statistics of all time.

Well, I can dream.

I do like statistics and I don’t mind knowing that I probably will have to work with it for the rest of my life, despite my life path leading away from working as a statistician.

I don’t like how I seem to be unable to take anything from the lectures.

With that being said, I’m certain I absorb a lot more than I realise and I’m being somewhat unrealistic about the whole thing. Reading my notes will help a lot and I’ll gradually retain more and more information from the lectures as time goes on.

It’s going to be a lengthy uphill struggle until that point though.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 20:40:68

Slower than last time.
I didn’t realise how much I had to think about what I was writing until after I started, so that’s my own fault.

Hopefully faster next time.

A Fading Path of M&M’s

I took this photo today as a submission for Monochrome Madness which is run by Leanne Cole on her blog.

It’s great as it encourages interest in monochromatic photos and helps create a small community.

Short plug aside, I had a bit of trouble thinking about what I was going to submit as this week had the theme of ‘MM’.

Eventually I decided to buy M&M’s and arrange them in a pattern to make it look like as they got further away, the pattern was getting smaller.

It didn’t quite turn out that way but I like the result.

I’m not sure if they are traveling or if it is a path to walk.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Sunrise from the Pacific Highway

Here’s a picture I took shortly after the previous one.
I was getting close to work when I saw how sunlight was showing through the clouds.

It filled me with a sense of wonder and awe.
I found it to be incredibly beautiful.

Once again, it made for an interesting juxtaposition.

The light was piercing the darkness with great ease and felt almost welcoming, bathing all in a warm glow, whereas the darkness seemed to be engulfing all that it could hold on to.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Sunrise from a City Street

I took this photo this morning whilst I was heading to work.
It was a quick shot as I was crossing a road
The sunrise was much stronger than it appears in the photo.

I like how everything was dark except the sky. It made for an interesting juxtaposition between the dark and light.

I feel that the image gives a strong sense of the city waking up and people trying to rush around.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-hundred Word Challenge 6: On Dreams

Today I’m doing the challenge on my lunch break and as I don’t have access to WordPress on my work pc I have to pay more attention to all that I’m writing.
Quite frankly, I don’t find that too exciting.

And now I’ve noticed that this version of Word includes a real-time word counter. Crisis averted.

I woke up rather early this morning and I’m not too sure if I had a really intense dream or not.
I think I remember having a dream but not waking up after having it. I’m not sure.

Maybe the dream had me.
Maybe it was a wondrous land of honey and sock trees.
All the residents would’ve been playing and laughing; not necessarily in that order.

Then I suddenly would’ve made an appearance out of nowhere. No pop sound.

One moment I wasn’t; the next I was.

I imagine I would have suddenly appeared and been involved in a conversation as though I was always there.

I would’ve then realised that my head was a blue turnip that spat soliloquies of an extremely docile nature. Then the lettuce leaf that was my enemy would have said something about how odd it was that a lettuce leaf had the ability to talk. I would have agreed and the person I was conversing with would explode into chrome plasma-like lights.

Maybe.

It’s possible that I thought I had a dream but didn’t. It felt like I did though.

I’m not too sure as to whether there’s any basis in this, but I think there’s a certain feeling that you get when you wake from having a dream. I think that, depending on the intensity of a dream determines how strong the feeling is. It’s kind of like waking up in a different world than what you just experienced, if that is an expressible feeling.

Unfortunately I do not know if it is or isn’t.

Dreams can feel like they are taking us to another world but they’re probably nothing more than taking us deep into our imagination as it runs free with concepts it wants to explore, only having the time to do so when we are at rest.

It seems that when we are awake, our minds are bounded by patterns and rules which might be why some of the things people dream about seem so surreal compared to what thoughts usually occur throughout the day time.

Some people think they don’t have an imagination but I don’t think that’s the case.

I think that dreams show us that a lot of people have far more imagination than they realise.

I think that dreaming is a fantastic thing. I think it helps shape a lot of the paths people choose to take whether they are aware of it or not.

Sometimes a dream can be horrible experiences better forgotten than remembered, but as they can be influenced by mental state, they could be considered as part of who we are.

That’s what I think.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 14:43:17

Well, around that time (I reset the timer by mistake but I remember it being around there). Faster than yesterday. I’m not sure what makes me go faster.

Not yet.
