Five-Hundred Word Challenge 754: Gardening

So a couple of hours earlier I put a small tree in a new pot. Its roots were starting to come out of the old pot it was in, so it was time to move it into something a little bigger. Hopefully it keeps growing strong, but also hopefully it does not get too big. I’d rather still be able to have it be at a manageable height, though it is already taller than I am, so I guess… we’ll see what happens?

Gardening is fun. Gardening is awesome. It is many things. It is also frustrating, tiring and aggravating, but it is mostly fun and awesome. Being able to work on something over a period of time and produce something that, if you so desire, gives back to you in spades is great. So is just the act of doing the gardening. It can take a lot of energy out of you. It can wear you down and get you really sweaty. It’s like doing a workout on both yourself and whatever it is that you are growing.

Gardening takes a lot of time. Sometimes it can take years of work before you get to a point where it’s all just maintaining stuff. Probably will take a lot less time than that if you know what you’re doing and don’t need to worry about moving house, but even so, it does take time. It takes time and effort, unless you decide to go down the route of hiring people to do the work for you, which of course has its own positives and negatives, but right now I’m just trying to focus on the positives of working on a garden as just yourself, as well as perhaps some housemates and friends on the odd occasion that you’re able to rope them into helping (unless of course they help willingly, which is a different story altogether, so yeah, or something).

Recently I’ve been getting back into weed removal as, whilst most of my current backyard is concrete, a lot of wees grow through cracks. There’s also a small patch of grass off to the side that I want to remove and plant something both shade and drought-tolerant in, as that will mean slightly less management to worry about, though admittedly whilst it can be quite frustrating to go digging into stuff and pulling it out for hours on end, I’d rather focus on the weeds in the cracks rather than the weeds that are quite easy to remove.

There is also some re-potting going on. It’s all a slow process, but a progressing process nonetheless.

The great thing about gardening is that it works well with patience. Seldom it is where you can rush a garden and have it at the point you’d want it to be. You have to put a lot of work into one, but eventually, with enough time and care and patience, that work pays off.

Gardening is a process that rewards by a significant amount.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:00:15

Felt like writing about gardening today. Not sure if what I wrote reads well, but I think at least the passion comes across.

Written at home.
