Bloods: Feelings Review

Dealing with a bit of news at the moment so I’m not feeling much like writing.

Here’s another review from Cool Try; to be more specific, the second last one I wrote before the transition to Culture Eater began.

I may have used Feelings a few too many times, and some sentences are underdeveloped. Some parts could also make more sense. This needed a bit more work.

That said, overall I think this is one of the stronger reviews I’ve written.

Most of my review and interview work is now on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. One of the things we’ve set up is a podcast with each episode coming out fortnightly to every three weeks. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Bloods express feelings on their new album by the name of Feelings. Feelings is comprised of songs. This is something that you can expect from an album from musicians.

Most of Feelings sticks to a mid to uptempo pace and a verse / chorus / verse progression. Fuzzy guitar is a prominent feature, and vocals are usually ahead of everything. Whilst there are occasional deviations, Feelings sticks to a template and as a result is consistent.

There’s a lot of energy and enthusiasm as songs about romantic inclinations come out at a steady pace. At least on the surface that’s what the songs could be about. There’s likely little to no deeper meaning in the songs, but at times there seems to be a hinting toward something deeper than what’s on the surface. Regardless of what the lyrical depth may be, the lyrics match the songs pretty well.

Of course, the vocals help quite a lot in that regard. There’s no gymnastics, nothing outside of a small range and seemingly little desire to go beyond explicit requirements. There’s also a kind of hazy, airy quality to them that helps to carry the lyrics along. The vocals match the music really well due to how fuzzy and loud the instruments can be. However, this also helps to make the choice to put the vocals at the forefront of everything most of the time a puzzling one.

Outside of this, the songs work really well. Rather than push for complexity the focus seems to have been on sound and tone. The songs drive forward and get in and out as quickly as required. The faster songs bookend Feelings and are partially interspersed throughout the album. Slower songs help balance the affair.

Near the end Feelings slows a bit more with two slightly softer songs before the pace picks back up for the closer. Like the vocals there’s a hazy, airy quality to the songs that helps carry them along. They feel quite vague yet at the same time have a direct nature to them. This all helps to give Feelings a good flow that feels like just the right length.

Often there are bands that sound obsessed with the past. Bloods sound like there’s a strong interest in what has come before but underneath it all there’s something looking forward. Feelings does look back; at times a little too heavily, but it doesn’t feel mired by the past. The album is a fun and enjoyable slice of music. Bloods have a lot of potential and it will be good to see where Feelings leads them.

You can hear Feelings here.

Overcast Sydney CBD Shot

Still looks a little like a crown.

I like that Goat Island is kind of in the way of the CBD. It adds a bit more depth to the photo.

I think this photo gives a good idea of the CBD’s spread and clustering, and I like that the clouds match the dull colouring of the buildings.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 594: Rain Another Day

The joys of having a day off led to a lot of not very much getting done, but sometimes it’s better that way, when you think about it.

However, it is not better right now. There still is a lot that I need to do before the end of the day and there is little time in which getting things done remains. I have, as they say… procrastinated. It has been glorious.

And yet, there is so much I could have already done with the time I have been afforded on this very fine day, but I haven’t done much of anything as the joys of illness overrule all. I am ill, it sucks, blah blah blah. You get the picture.

I guess this piece is about writing, or something. Well, maybe it is, maybe it is not. I am not yet sure as to what the result will be and if you’ve gotten this far, well, there’s still a bit to go, so just bear with me.

I’m waiting for the rain to come along and release itself all over the suburbs. The scene is one of beauty and it’s one that I’ve seen from many a place many a time. I do have to admit, however, that I miss seeing heavy rain from when I was living in Glebe.

I was on a hill and it was just pleasant to watch the rain fall from where I lived. It was pleasant to see it fall whilst standing or sitting in the front doorway. I don’t miss those times, but I do miss that place, despite how dirty it was.

However, the place I’m in now allows for better light and  a better household. It also allows for a better backyard and it is still pleasant to watch the rain fall from the sky and onto the lawn. It’s a nice place and I’m pretty chuffed with how things are going.

Hopefully the rain will soon fall in large quantities and I will be able to watch it hit the lawn and hit parts of the front porch. It will be pleasant, but the watching cannot go on for too long as there are things that I need to get done by the end of the day. I should start taking care of stuff sooner rather than later.

Still, it’s a nice day and it’s decent enough to sit back and relax as much as I can, for the time being at least.

Soon I shall be working like a bee, or something to similar effect. There will be the doing of the completing and not the other way around, as that would cause some serious issues, or something.

Either way, soon the rain will come, or maybe it won’t. Maybe it was a false promise that I made to myself as I expected something to happen, but all that was was just a passing moment that I read too much into.

Well, it will always rain another day.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:31:88

Well, it is yet to rain and I’m still at my desk.

The writing that was produced is merely okay.

Written at home.

Behind the Mic

This is probably a little too dark, but I guess that makes the image moodier.

This is a shot of Immolation’s Ross Dolan.

I like that the hair is disturbed and that there is sweat visible.
It makes the shot feel more like a shot of a person in the moment, which it was.
There’s energy going into the performance and that comes through pretty clearly.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Wednesday” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 603: Umbrella and the Rain

So on Monday I went into the studio to record some vocals. Instead of going home to rest, I went to storage after and moved stuff around to make it easier to get rid of some of the stuff I no longer want or need.

What did all of this lead to? A lack of vocal power and spore ribs all throughout Tuesday. Oh well.

There are worse things to experience, but it did get in the way of getting much done.

Instead of being productive, I sat down and sunk my teeth into games, letting them wash over me and carry me on a course throughout a plot that reveals itself over time, rather than in the first instant  that it can.

I make what I was playing sound more mysterious than it was, but that is what you’re getting this morning. I’m not operating on full as my body thinks I’m sick even though I’m not (which, considering how it’s reacting I guess means that I am sick, or something).

Either way, I sit here at work, preparing for the worst whilst hoping for the best. It will be a deluge and I have no umbrella, but this will not be cathartic. People are vicious and so am I. I’m just a bit more professional about it, but that is to to say that I am professional about it at all. I’m only a little bit more professional. No swearing. Well, not on the phones anyway.

Of course, it could be quiet. There may be no rain at all and I’ll be walking with a gentle breeze and a sun that shines down, but I’d still need a hat as I’d need to shade my face so I don’t burn it to a crisp. Would rather avoid doing that. There are other things I’d need my face for, such as the things that a face is required for, this increasing my need to keep my face a face and not am overcooked food item of your choice to describe an overly-burnt face.

Maybe the headset is my hat that protects me as it keeps me at a distance whilst also allowing me to engage with the customers of which I need to engage with. Either that or an umbrella. The headset is my umbrella. That’s a good way of looking at it, I think.

The headset is my umbrella and I am using it to protect me from the customers and their queries. How metaphorical for the umbrella and the rain, or something to similar effect.

Wait a minute. That’s not what I’m looking for. I’m looking for two words that work together when placed in a certain consecutive order that will more accurately describe how I feel about what I’ve just said about working in customer service. However, the words seem to elude me.

I think that if I think hard enough, I can work out what they are.

Wait; I’ve now worked them out:

Vaguely profound.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:43:23

I think this could’ve been faster.
I’m a bit sluggish this morning, however.

I worked myself hard on Monday so I’m not surprised that I ended up sore yesterday and still kind of ill today. However, I’m surprised at how quickly I’m bouncing back. Voice is nearly back and generally I feel fine.
It used to take me a bit longer to recover. Isn’t the body meant to take longer to bounce back the older you get?

I digress.

So the writing of this is kind of… flat? Not great?

It came out with little difficulty, which is something that I’m happy about.
I think the writing could’ve been a bit tighter.

Written at work.

Heljarmadr’s Light

A photo taken from the gig I shot a few days ago.

I don’t know if obscuring the face was the right thing to do, but I like the result so I’m not fussed.

I think that the way the light passes through gaps around Heljarmadr’s body is interesting as it makes the photo more dramatic in a way.

I like how the angle leads to Heljarmadr being contextually removed from his surroundings whilst still keeping him within the context of the gig.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s photo challenge for this week.

The theme for this one is “The Colour Blue”.

Whilst not the most prominent feature of the photo, I think the Sydney Harbour Bridge makes this photo count.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

I hope you enjoy.

RACKETT: Ready or Not Review

Another review written for Cool Try.

For the past few days I’ve been trying to work out where the rest of this review went as it doesn’t feel like it should be as short as it is.

I’m coming to the conclusion that maybe I didn’t write as much as I thought I did.

I think my major issue with this piece is that it reads more like a puff piece than a review.
I don’t think that is a good thing.

That said, I stand behind what I wrote. It was an enjoyable listen.

This is as it was when it went up on Cool Try.

A colleague and I are working on growing Culture Eater, which is where most of my reviewing and interview work now goes. We’ve set up a Patreon as we want to be able to cover more stuff and grow our contributor base which would take the pressure of continually putting out content off of ourselves and also allow a greater focus on quality.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

BEHOLD! It’s an e.p. from RACKETT!

There’s a nice simplicity to Ready or Not.
All the instrumentation avoids complexity and the vocals aren’t doing any form of gymnastics. Using rock and pop as templates, this leads to the songs being brief and fairly direct.

There’s usually a bit of breathing space within each song as well as a bit of energy and fuzziness in the sound, balancing the sound somewhere between sparse and full, making it easy to discern who brings what to a song.

The vocals are quite strong, focused and well-developed, singing lyrics that are usually revolving around relationship subject matter in some form. Whilst the lyrics themselves feel underdeveloped in parts, the vocals make good work of them by adding a sense of passion and catchiness that would have been sorely lacking had the delivery lacked in effort.

Ready or Not is a fairly decent release. It is fun, with a good energy found within the songs.
It’s brief enough to not drag but also long enough to offer some well-developed songs.

Ready or Not is worth a listen.

A Silhouette at Smiths Lake

One from earlier on this year whilst at Smith’s Lake.

Rather similar to this image.

I think this one works better as the human element is removed, opening the image to the landscape and the clouds.

The strong contrast between light levels helps to bring forward “Silhouettes” whilst also keeping the scene distinct.

It’s a bit of a moody photo, but I like how it turned out.

This is my submission into The Lens-Artists Photo Challenge for this week.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This week is hosted by Patti and next week’s will be hosted by Leya.

I recommend checking out the challenge to see how people interpret each theme.
I also recommend giving it a go.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

The Tide Meets the Rocks

I believe the tide was classified as low at the juncture in time this image was taken.

The colour of the water contrasts quite a bit against the colour of the rocks and rock oysters, I think.

A few different textures and some nice variation in detail, and so on.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 602: Photography’s Great

So far the morning has been best described as a battlefield, but of course this would be a low cost, low stakes battlefield, as it is the battlefield of customer service in which customers receive their service and we try to get them off the phones as quickly as possible.

It doesn’t always work, but sometimes it works brilliantly. Depends on the day.

Instead of talking about all of that, I will be talking about photography. I know that I’ve talked about photography before, but I’m going to try and talk about photography in a better form than I have in the past, as it is something that I enjoy.

Photography is the process in which someone conducts the art and science of photography. It involves using equipment for photographic purposes.

Usually when someone is conducting photography, they are conducting photography in order to capture an image known as a “photo”.

When a photo is captured, then an image in the photo format is produced.

The fun thing about photography is that it opens up the ability to do photography.

On a more serious note, it helps to train your eye for details. When you do photography, you can become more aware of the space around you. It means that you notice more things and suddenly things that may not have been obvious become interesting. You see more detail. You see the world in a different way.

Tonight I will be shooting a gig. It’s the first in two months (might be more, but I can’t quite remember at the moment). What I like about gig photography is that it’s another different way of thinking. You have to be faster, and more deliberate and intentional, so generally you’re thinking in a different way. At the same time, there can be more room for error if it can be justified after the fact, and also thinking becomes kind of something you become less conscious about as you enter the zone and find yourself working hard in the moment.

It’s going to be a good challenge. It always is and that’s something I like about gig photography.

I still like the slow, methodical approach that is afforded in working in open spaces.

Well, sometimes open spaces allow that. Sometimes I find myself rushing about and moving under pressure to get to the right spot at the right time, but the right spot isn’t known until you get there. That in itself is its own challenge, but it also a wonderful one.

The great thing about photography is that you can take it almost anywhere you want to go. Obviously not everywhere as there will always be some restrictions, but there are few limits.

It is something that allows us to speak to each other through a medium that most are able to understand and that too is a beautiful thing. Even then, there are ways to communicate images so that those who cannot understand them become able to understand them.

Photography’s great.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:36:86

Faster than I thought it would be, but slower than it could’ve been.

A bit rambling, a bit loose, but otherwise I think I get a point across.

Written at work.
