Talk

A photo of three pigeons. Two are having a minor squabble.

I was watching these pigeons for a while as they were bathing in the water and I wanted to get a few shots of them in motion for the assignment on which I am working.

I think that the motion of the pigeons is captured well in this photo and I like that you can see how they’ve affected the water.

I also like the level of detail found in the feathers and the way that they are layered.

There probably could have been a little less open space in the photo.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Barangaroo Construction

In this photo we can see work being done to develop the Barangaroo area.

How droll.

I kind of like the scene, although it seems to be a little too dark and a little too bright in places.

I like it mostly due to how it makes all the visible structure and construction seem so ugly.

I think that is helped by the slight bit of sunset that can be seen in the background.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 25: Suburban Days 2

Eventually, whilst the pain of walking in a harsh, dry sun was unbearable, The Resident managed to struggle onward with less and less stopping.

There were things that needed to be done. There were responsibilities that needed to be carried out and regardless of their current state of being and their current state of mind, The Resident needed to push on forward and get the required obligations into a place that was behind them, even if it would only be a temporary respite.

Still, despite all their pushing onward toward the destination of the day, every uneven surface of bitumen could be felt and every rough, lumpy part on a footpath felt almost as though The Resident was placing their feet onto rocky surfaces in the bush. They could feel it all digging in, trying to break through in order to be really felt, but the barrier held out and all that was able to penetrate was the ongoing, rough and at times overwhelming pain that served as a reminder of the journey far more than the destination.

Had it been a little cooler, The Resident may have felt the ground a little less than they were. The heat only served to exacerbate the situation a little more than The Resident would have liked, for not only was it making the ground a little more rough to walk along, but it also reminded The Resident of how dry they were and how bright it was outside of their house.

Still, onward they persisted and onward along lengthy stretches of street they traversed.
Eventually the looming, rigid and amorphous shopping centre rose from behind a few residential properties. This brought a renewed sense of determination within The Resident, or perhaps it was more of a feeling of relief, for the cool, smooth floors in the shopping centre would allow for a lovely respite from the walk outside. It would be as bright inside, but far less so than it was under the unbearable sun beating down on all that could not escape into shade for a whole day.

At one of the many entrances The Resident stood as the automatic doors opened. A small rush of cool air could be felt and as it passed by, The Resident found themselves more than compelled to walk inside and allow it to embrace them. This was more than a feeling of relief. For them, this was a heaven that had been explored many a time, but never fully appreciated for what it enabled in dire times of duress.

No longer were they shuffling along, walking slowly yet surely in pain as each step meant that each foot would touch rough, hot surfaces, but they were now gliding along, floating on a surface that was hard, yet smooth and cool. The Resident could have been a dancer in that time, for they were as graceful in their dry, rough shuffling gait as any person who could express power and grace using their body in the form of dance.

The Resident glided their way to the supermarket with a bit of a grimace, for they knew that there was a fair bit of food that they needed to acquire. It dawned on them that they needed to get in and out quickly, for they had reached the supermarket at the peak hour of other people shopping and any minute wasted in an aisle was another minute that they would have to spend surrounded by a mass of fleshy beings creating a noisy drone of far too many voices to decipher.

In they went and plunging themselves into the chaos that they seemed destined to embrace, The Resident set themselves to the task at hand.

No longer did they feel as thought hey were gliding, but instead they were walking along a surface with no discernible features to help indicate and place themselves within space and time, for it was smooth the whole way, yet with a great amount of traction that forced the realisation that one foot was definitely being placed in front of the other for the whole time spent within the supermarket. The coolness was still somewhat of a relief, but gradually it was growing into something that was complimenting the pain of walking outside, for the memory of the ground outside was still lingering.

The brightness of the supermarket was almost overwhelming. However, The Resident pushed on through and made their way through each aisle as deftly as they could and bought what they remembered to buy.

Soon they were at the counters. Whilst any day would normally see one of the self-serve checkouts used, it seemed almost like an incomprehensible proposition to consider and so relying on one of the staffed registers was the option chosen.

Luckily it was not a long wait for service and soon standing opposite the cashier was The Resident idly watching their items being scanned.

“Good morning! How are you today?”

“…Morning. I’m uh… not bad. Alright. Bit tired.”

“Big night?”

“Kind of.”

“Well, at least you’re getting things done. Big plans for the day?”

“No. Maybe? How come?”

“Well, you’re buying a lot of stuff. Looks like you’re planning a big feast.”

“No. Just shopping.”

“Well, you are prepared!”

“Thanks? Uh… how are you?”

“Oh, I’m alright. Just busy. Nothing like a bit of hard work to make the day go by fast!”

“Yeah…”

“You know, capsicum is really delicious! Various colours and flavours and works well in a lot of different states, depending on how it’s cooked.”

“Yeah. I’ve got a few.”

“I can see. It’ll go well with a few of the things you’ve got here.”

“Yeah, it will. Thanks for the suggestion.”

And shortly after, The Resident paid and left as quickly as they could.

There was still an outside world that needed to be embraced and they were not sure if they were ready for the task.

The Resident braced themselves for the incoming warmth and, approaching the exit, stepped outside.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 21:28:18

It had been a while since I attempted with a higher word count and I’d meaning to continue this story for a while.

Not exactly great writing, but I think that there’s at least a continuous narrative thread that kind of tells a story that makes some sort of sense.

Looming Over You

Two of the “International” towers and a smaller building that just like the other two in this shot looks like something similar to a silo.

To me, this photo makes it seem like these buildings exist in a vacuum.

The towers also look menacing and hideous, I think.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 415: What a Conundrum

Oh my, it is past nine in the morning by at least two hours and I’ve yet to be motivated to do much of anything at all.

What a conundrum this just so happens to be, even though it is not a conundrum whatsoever!

At least I get to warm up now, as opposed to later.

However, why would I be warming up now when I should have done so earlier on in the day?

Well, the answer is simple, really: I am being lazy and now need to get started on an assignment that is due very shortly.

Will I get the assignment done in the allotted time?

Perhaps it is a little too early to say.

Well, I have a feeling that I will be able to get it done soon, so long as I focus hard on making sure that I complete everything that I need to complete as soon as possible, then work on extraneous material.

That is the process that I really should follow. However, I don’t think that that will be how the whole thing eventuates, for I imagine that at one point I will waffle on about something that does not matter for no reason whatsoever.

Although, perhaps that will be the secret to getting the best of marks from the assignment that must be completed this afternoon.

Perhaps in going on about things that don’t matter for the assignment, the graders will recognise some sort of secret genius, not knowing that I was trying to fill in space and make myself look intelligent.

Perhaps that is the way to the path and the path forward will be found by going that way. I think that indeed, I must go on about things that are not pertinent to the assignment and that will carry the most weight toward getting the best marks that I can possibly get for a task so grandiose and magnificent that it will lead to glorious times only held near a torch when approaching the darkness with no fear and only intent.

Perhaps I am dreaming of things that are not going to happen. However, it is good to dream and so long as I can keep on doing so, a few more words that will lead to the end of this sentence.

Perhaps, instead of going on about what I could and couldn’t do and hoping that somehow I will come out on top, I should just focus on getting the thing done and making sure that it is as concise as possible, for that will surely lead me to the grade that I would have earned in this instance.

Perhaps I could do that. Perhaps it is a good idea.

Maybe I should stop writing and start writing, in that order.

Maybe I should stop procrastinating and get on with getting on.

With that being said, I’m feeling a little peckish.

Wait. No I’m not.

I am just trying to waste time for no justifiably good reason.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:54:40

This one is not that great, but I was treating it more as a warm up exercise than anything else.

Light Stretches Over Train Tracks

These were taken last week whilst I was in Redfern.

The colour of these photos seems a little odd to me and I think that I may have left the shutter open for a little too long, but I think that these manage to somehow work for the photos.

It’s interesting to think about how “Prolific” rail transport has become.
There’s so much of it out there and you can see quite a lot through its use.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 414: Hotter than Usual

It was hotter than usual, but then again, somehow that was not out of the ordinary.

The sea seemed lower in this particular part of the earth that we all call home, but then again, it was also something that seemed not out of the ordinary.

There was a person, standing at where the edge of the water lay, looking out, waiting for something and hoping for something to happen; something to change to allow for a sigh of relief.

They stood there, sweat beading and sliding down their face and flies drawing themselves to this person’s back, but there was no care about this, for it was more important to watch the horizon and wait and hope for something to change.

Over time, more people came to stand at the shoreline. The ocean seemed to be approaching their feet and yet would hesitate before reaching and retreat before attempting again and repeating the process without fail.

The tide did not increase or decrease. It held its flow for the same level throughout the entire process.

More people came and watched and looked outward, away from the land and over the ocean where it almost seemed to fade into the sky, or perhaps it was the other way around. The horizon was there; that much was evident. However, where the ocean and sky met seemed to become more and more indistinct until the tell that should have been obvious was nothing more than an ambiguous gesture.

Still, more people came, stopping in the same location. They were not compelled to do so, but all a willing participant. All waited and watched. All stared out and hoped. All were looking for a change in direction. All were waiting to wake up and see that there was no need to wait or hope.

All were sweating and all were drawing flies to hover around them, looking for somewhere to land and sit for a while before flying off to somewhere else that they could inhabit, even if it would be for a few seconds before needing to once more relocate.

Over time a line with little space sitting between each person had formed. The ocean still dared not come to touch their feet and provide relief with its cool form and the people dared not step any more forward into the vast body of the ocean. The ocean lapped gently at the shoreline rather than crash and spray and the people stood there, staring out, seemingly refusing to notice what was there and what would allow them to be freed of the heat, even if only temporarily.

Heat was almost unbearable and sweat was soaking clothes. The ocean was unreachable as it was prominent and ever-present.

The line of people stood and stared out, and the horizon was as indistinct as it was before any living being took notice.

The sky shuddered and heaved and the sky faded, and all that was once visible was no longer as the sky became dark.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:47:65

Slow. Still, I am somewhat-satisfied.

When I arrived at uni this morning a base idea for this small work of fiction popped into my head and so I developed it into what you read.

It’s okay.

Air Conditioning

This was taken whilst I was wandering about on a lunch break.

I had been down this alley a few times beforehand, but had never taken a good look around.

I can’t remember as to what it was that lead me to looking up, but looking up is what lead to this photo.

Perhaps the photo is a little too bright (It was one of the test shots with the new camera), but I do like how the light does contrast with the shadows.

The shadows are elongated due to the position of the sun and, thanks to the angle and positioning of the air conditioning units, the elongated shadows seems to spread out in some slightly different angles instead of following a rigid direction.

I think.

This is my entry into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.

I recommend checking it out and considering submitting if you are a photographer.
It’s a fun event driven both by Leanne Cole and the small community that participates.

I also recommend that you check out Leanne Cole‘s work outside of Monochrome Madness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

The Stars that Hang Above

On the recent trip to Smiths Lake I once more had the opportunity to attempt astrophotography.

Of course I have the opportunity to do that in Sydney, which I’ve done before, but I digress.

Whilst taking these photos the many mosquitoes that were around decided they loved me very much and left me with plenty of parting gifts.

Overall it was enjoyable.

These are a vast improvement over my last attempt at Smiths Lake, but that’s to be expected considering I have a bit of a better idea of what I was doing this time around.

It also helped that the gear I had this time was better suited for the task.

The way that the stars seem to form a pattern is quite interesting.
I like how they span the whole area of the photo without engulfing the whole scene.

I think that scenes like this really make you appreciate how small you are, as well as appreciate nature.

I included the second photo due to the shooting star. I didn’t see it occur as I was pacing back and forth whilst the timer was running in an attempt to avoid the mosquitoes. I felt that it was unfortunate that I missed the shooting star, but I saw one a couple of nights prior so it wasn’t too bad.

I like the way there’s a contrast between the shooting star and the other space objects.

You have all these lights that are still, then a long, bright trail cutting through the darkness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 413: Currently Residing

A single window, a ladder down and a desk in which I am able to precariously position myself in order to make good use of its space.

This is where I am currently residing. A small space with a mattress in a corner that is more comfortable than appearances would allow one to believe.

It’s not much, but right now it’s home and it’s much better than I had anticipated, which is also a good thing.

I am sitting here at a desk, working on things in a better capacity at this residence than I had previously worked, for I was on the bed typing away and that did not allow for good comfort.

The window is open, but soon it shall be closed once more and therefore the cool air will stop flowing into this small room. However, the temperature of the room will drop and I will inevitably need a blanket in the morning, lest I be cold and wake up in such a state.

To be absolutely clear, I think I’ve lucked out with where I currently am.

I’m in the company of people that I know well and I’ve still got a few weeks before I need to move on, which should be more than enough time to get everything that I need to get sorted sorted and find another roof to take over.

I get a good view of the night sky, my plants are being taken care of and it’s fairly easy for me to get to work from here, which is good as if it was not easy, then I’d have to take more time than usual to do the commute and I am already taking more time than I would wish.

Wait. That’s not quite true. I’m around the rough optimal time that I want for getting to and from work.

The suburb in which I inhabit at the moment is not too far from others I have previously lived in, which is a good thing as I spend a bit of time in those suburbs.

I have a small collection of items with me. Most of it is clothes, but there are instruments and some books.

It is quiet which is what I need at this point. My previous place was also quiet, but this is one where there is noise in the background that is non-invasive and that is something with which I am left some form of satisfaction.

Now that I’ve begun using the desk here, it means I can get much more work done.  Well, that is what I am telling myself. I’ll probably procrastinate a lot, but at least that may mean that you will get something out of it, or not. Depends on how much you enjoy my writing, really.

So here I am, in an attic, in a space in which I can live.

This is not my space, but for now it is a space in which I inhibit and for now it is home.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:39:62

A bit dull, but I’ve been running on little sleep for a few too many nights in a row.

Also perhaps a little too on the personal side of things.

Perhaps.
