Dog Waiting

Here’s a photo… of a dog… “Waiting“…

I took this a few months ago whilst taking some photos for promoting my local café, which I still do as it’s fun.

This was a very patient and calm dog.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Rainbow Lorikeets on the Branches

This was taken when last at Balls Head Reserve.
To be more specific, shortly after exiting Balls Head Reserve.

I submitted this as my photo for Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness this week.
Being the first Thursday of the month, it was themed.
The theme was “Tree or Trees”.

I feel as though there is a kind of symmetry to the rainbow lorikeets in this photo.

I also like the amount of negative space due to how thin the branches appear in the photo.

I think that this photo works more based around texture than it does detail alone.

I strongly recommend checking out Monochrome Madness and, if you partake in photography or have an interest in taking it up, then I also recommend submitting something. It’s a small, yet strong community-driven event that I honestly believe is worth the time.

I hope you enjoy.

Another ANZAC Bridge Photo

As the title says.

I took this shot whilst heading into the city to see 47 Metres Down.

I think that the colour is more muted in this photo and, apart from around the clouds, it has a gradual shift that sort of makes it feel like a background.

I like that the layers of this photo give a good sense of depth, and that ANZAC Bridge is the most prominent bit of architecture.

I like that due to the vegetation you can’t see where the road across the bridge comes from.

Despite the traffic, I think that this is a fairly quiet shot.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 290: Tree Sitting on the Sand

There lies a still branch that has been weathered over many years.

Well, it’s more than just a branch. It is a good part of a tree.

It is weathered and white, battered by the salt in the air and the wind that moves it with various temperaments.

It sits on the sand, watching the waves roll in and out throughout each day. Sometimes it is touched by the water. Sometimes the water submerges part of it in its attempts at reshaping the profile of the beach, trying to move the sand around as much as possible.

The weathered tree remains sitting there, stationary, despite slowly splitting from the wetting and trying, gradually looking more and more as though it has been bleached as its color seeps out and goes elsewhere to places that the tree does not know.

Sometimes there are visitors as youth explore the tree, taker photos with it, pretend to be pirates and sailors, jumping around an on the tree. It holds still for, whilst it is weathered and appearing brittle, it still remains as sturdy as it was when it was more vertical than it happens to now be, still remaining safe to clamber about.

Sometimes animals will make it some sort of temporary home, or just explore its body with some sort of curiosity that we normally associate in people.

They will feel around on its surface, sensing different textures that are not uniform in size.

It has been sitting there for far longer than most people have thought. They do not know how long it has been sitting on the sand. They aren’t sure as to where it came from, for its shape does not resemble any of the other vegetation surrounding the area.

They do know that once it was not there, then it was.

Perhaps some people brought it there some time. What would their reasons be? It is difficult to discern, for if it was brought there by people, it would have  had to come far.

Perhaps there is no reason. Perhaps someone put it there because they could, rather than any given reason that would make some sort of sense.

Perhaps it was there before and no one noticed. Surely one would not expect people to pay attention to the background when whatever is in front of them would be considered as being the most important.

The tree has watched much success and tragedy happen around it, seen sadness and joy, seen families and individuals, appreciators and photographers, as well as an assorted gathering of many others that one may not consider to name.

It has seen the profile of the beach shift multiple times and the tide rise and fall more than most people would ever think that they have.

It has felt the winds caresses its body with salt and the cold rain.

The tree has been there a long time. It is weathered and appears brittle, but it remains as strong as it was in life.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:24:81

I think that I was going for something a little more relaxed or mundane.

I think.

Eh.

It’s alright.

Down Rock, Toward Ocean

The water runs down the rock face, toward the ocean where it shall be part of a great body once more.

This was taken whilst I was last in the Royal National Park.

It was a nice, sunny day.

It was a good walk.

I like how well the water contrasts with the rock.

I also like that this could almost be seen as being an aerial photo over a large area.

There’s a nice shape to the water flow as well as some good, earthy colours in the rock.

I hope you enjoy.

Disasteradio: Sweatshop Review

It has been seven long years since Charisma was released.

Wait.

It has been seven short years since Charisma was released.

Wait.

It has been almost seven years since Charisma was released. It seemed that perhaps Disasteradio had succumbed to some sort of unbreakable barrier after the release and we’d never hear music under than moniker again.

However, much like the sounds of the 80’s throughout the prior decade, Disasteradio is back with Sweatshop, an album full of poppy tunes that will eat your ears.

After little activity for most of a decade, what better a track to open the new album with than “Whateverworld”?

There could be something a little more restrained, dramatic and vocally trying to be subtle about something related to returning, but instead it goes for upbeat, energetic, and brief.

It seems that brevity was the modus operandi of Sweatshop. Few, if any of the songs are longer than they should be. They are long enough to not leaving you wanting more of a song, but short enough to make sure that there’s no bloat in any given track, leaving them quite lean and effective.

Much of the mood is upbeat and energetic, driven by heavy synth work.

Some of the songs are slower and more tender in sound than others (such as “Unleash the Free TV Revolt” and “Oh Yeah”), but these are few and far between and work well to counterbalance the rest of the album and in turn prevent it from being an overload of energetic synth work.

The vocals are wielded as though they are another sound for the songs rather than their own thing. The approach hasn’t changed much from prior albums, but they always manage to work in each song they’re used. Various lyrics about watching shows about T.V. on M.T.V., never getting to the city and taking it to the sweatshop, among other themes are spread throughout the record, sung by a vocoder voice that feels as electronic as the sounds they accompany.

If there is any downfall to the record, it is that it feels a little too much like a genre throwback in places. Whilst Disasteradio has always seemed to lean a little consciously on the past, on Sweatshop it seems a little more so. What is done with the sounds used is handled quite well and it’s difficult to find fault with the choice, but at times it is distracting due to those moments not feeling as balanced with something a little more forward-looking than the rest of the album.

Sweatshop is a solid album from a solid artist. It’s fun and upbeat in sound, comprised of a collection of well-crafted songs. It could have easily been bad but it wasn’t.

It’s a good addition to the Disasteradio discography that shows that there’s still plenty of drive left.

Hopefully the wait for the next record isn’t anywhere near as long.

Balmain Shops

Whilst I was at Balmain shops the other day I decided to get a photo as I liked the cloud cover combined with the sunset.

I also like the architecture of the buildings.

I think that there’s something lively about this shot, or there’s something scenic about it.

I’m not entirely sure.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

47 Metres Down Review

I got to see this movie for free and I still felt ripped off.

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt are adults who spend some time acting like teenagers who are on holiday and end up diving in a rusty cage that breaks and sinks into the ocean, leaving them to spend most of their time talking semi-continuously whilst acting as hard as they can.

The premise is good, but it is let down by, aside from the direction and acting being a bit weak in places, two things:

The C.G.I. sharks and the soundtrack.

The sharks sometimes look fine, but haven’t we done sharks enough?
Isn’t it time that we stop trying to make them out to be as scary a threat as possible?
Can’t we just leave them alone?

Sharks are a threat but they’ve been used enough in film with little imagination at this point.

The soundtrack didn’t help much, being as loud as possible in parts.
I’ve said this before: a soundtrack should not tell you how to feel.

Whilst the acting is passable (being balanced between tolerable, weak and really good), this film would have been significantly improved with reduced dialogue, the removal of the sharks and the removal of music outside of diegetic use.

Being stuck in the ocean in a cage is scary enough as it is, but you don’t need sharks to keep that scary.

I do have to admit that I can see as to why the sharks were used and, despite my grievances with them I do have to admit that they aren’t used too much, but at the very least their use should have much less.

The jump scares were merely okay.

The film drags a little in parts, but otherwise its pacing is okay.

Admittedly, 47 Metres Down could have been much worse.

It also could have been better.

What was probably the best part of the film was, when being asked where Ewe and I wanted to sit, I asked if it mattered as it wasn’t as though anyone else was going to see the film.

The person serving us responded by saying “There’s ten other people seeing the film”.

After we responded, there was a bit of silence before the person serving us spoke once more.

“They’re paying”.

At The Domain

A cityscape from The Domain at night.

Huzzah!

There’s a nice smattering of lights from the buildings as well as from around the park.

I like that the clouds appear to be illuminated by the slights due to how they are only visible from above the city.

I like that there are not many buildings in the shot as well, as they tend to overcrowd the view.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 289: I Should Work on Something

Warm today.

Watered plants. They shall love the weather. Well, I hope they will.

It has been fairly quiet at work today. That is not a bad thing. In fact, far from it, for as it has been really busy over the past few weeks, today seems to function as a nice breath of fresh air.

Still, it seems almost empty without the deluge of enquiries that I field every single day that I am at work when I am at work taking calls.

I should really make the most of this time that I now have. There are many things that I can take care of that will leave me with some sort of advantage over something that I choose to have an advantage over, assuming that I gain any sort of advantage that I can actually use.

What am I even writing about today?

I do not know, but it seems to make sense, so I shall continue with the pursuit of this train of thought and see where it takes me.

After all, if I continue to pursue it, then I am sure that it will take me to some sort of conclusion that is rooted in something.

Whatever that something is, I do not know, but I’m sure that it may make sense at the end of this once I am done with my furious typing.

Anyway, an advantage….

I could start working on more reviews and try to get at least one done whilst I am here. I have started on one and could have it finished.

I could also work on uni work to make sure that I creep closer toward catching up and therefore proceeding to some sort of making sure that I stay afloat and don’t drown in the work.

I could also do some extra training for work and therefore make me better at my job somehow.

I could also work on my writing to ensure that I keep on exploring every option that I have in order to better my writing, regardless of how many options there are.

I could also just relax, although seeing as I have done enough of that recently, I would rather work on other things.

I cannot work on my photography for the the time being, for I do not have my laptop with me and there’s nothing in the office that I feel particularly interesting in taking a photo of, besides which I’m not allowed to take photos in the office for security reasons.

I could also work on my gaming skills, although I probably shouldn’t as there are more important things to worry about right now.

I do wish that I could work on music, although again, I do not have my laptop with me right now.

The thing I should do is work on something. If I do work on something, then work is being done and I can celebrate some sort of small victory, or just improve on my skill set.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:40:88

Zoom.

Well, after the next post I am most definitely working on something else.

Written at work.
