Five-Hundred Word Challenge 207: Something About Clothes

I’ve been awake for almost five hours and I haven’t even started writing.

On the plus side, I’m wearing pants, but that’s more out of necessity than anything else, as it is a little cold at the moment.

Then again, realistically what I should be doing is not wearing pants so I can build my resistance to cold to an extent so great that I would eventually be able to walk around mountains without wearing pants in the heart of winter whilst a blizzard blows around me and think to myself “Nice, cool breeze”.

Or I could just keep on wearing these pants which are rather comfortable as they’re like wearing blankets whilst retaining full or near-full mobility and full or near-full flexibility.

These pants are so comfy that and warm that I don’t always need extra blankets when I sleep.

They’re fantastic.

I would wear them outside of my residence if I didn’t feel as though that it would mean that I would have to buy more pairs, despite how affordable they are because whilst I quite enjoy these pants and their comfort, I’m too cheap to be bothered with buying more than the two pairs that I already have.

Besides which, I’m trying to get rid of clothes as whilst I don’t have a large amount, I’d rather have far less than I do now as most of them aren’t being worn and could therefore go somewhere where someone will buy them and get far more use out of them than I will in the future.

Such is the nature of having far more clothes than you want or need without impacting the amount of variety in your wardrobe by a significant amount, therefore allowing you to remain as fresh as possible at any given time unless you haven’t washed your clothes despite how much you have been sweating in them, in which case you need to get to work and get cleaning because your clothes smell bad and as a result you also smell bad because you didn’t think it would be a good idea to wash the shirt that you’ve been wearing for a solid month and going for a jog in every day of that month, you saucy dazzler, you.

Now, where was I?

So these pants are really comfortable and I should get to writing about something today because very soon I need to get up and head off to university so I can do the learning, which means having a shower which would also mean I have to stop being lazy and get up and do something productive that involves moving my legs, although I did water my plants today, so that’s something.

I also think that I should write something that involves horses frolicking through the fjords, but then again that would be something that I’d need to think of very carefully so as to avoid any possible errors in scenic display when writing such a series of words.

I’ll consider it.

Open Urban Space

Another photo taken whilst at Darling Harbour.

Whilst exploring around with my friend from Queensland, we came across this area.

I’m not sure as to why it is as open as it is, but I found it to be refreshing to be in such an open area despite how plain it appears.

Perhaps events are held there on occasion.

I thought I processed this in colour as well as monochrome, but I’m guessing I didn’t.

I think that in monochrome this shot looks slightly intense.

It’s most likely due to how I’ve processed with monochrome as the contrast for tone is yhe dominant feature, I think.

I don’t mind.

I do like how the clouds engulf the sky and that the buildings are mostly in silhouette.

I also like the pattern of the ground.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 206: On Photography

WEll, it certainly is a fine morning on this very fine morning of mornings!

I was going to write about how I was going to write about something, but that idea fell through.

I was also going to write about how ungrateful some customers seem to be, but I think I’ve already covered that enough times in the past month, so it’s time for a new subject.

I think that today I shall talk about… photography.

So I’ve been doing photography for a number of years. Since being a young teenager, I think. More than ten. Definitely more than ten.

The point is that I’ve been doing photography for a very long time, although it’s only over the last six years that I’ve been doing it with a great deal of frequency.

I’m not too sure as to what it is that attracted me to photography. Maybe it was the camera. Maybe it was the resultant image once a picture is taken. I have no idea whatsoever. The fact is that I was drawn to it in some manner and enjoy it thoroughly I do.

Initially I had an analogue camera that ended up disappearing. My mum got it for me. When I used up the film, it was developed and then the camera seemed to disappear. From there, I’ve used camera attachments for devices as well as phones (which, whilst these days are getting quite good at capturing moments, don’t seem to have nailed the weight and feel that a camera has).

Despite being in the digital age where it’s easy to take a lot of photos in one go and pick the best one, I think it’s important to try and apply analogue methods to photography.

I think it’s still important to try and get the best shot you can in one attempt rather than delete a photo if you don’t think it’s that good and then try again. There’s a real skill in training your eye and the way you angle the camera to capture the best shot that you can.

I also think that it’s still important to be patient when it comes to photography because sometimes you really do need to wait a long time for the “right moment” to capture.

It’s important to carry a camera with you almost all the time as there will be moments where you will see something and be able to catch it.

I think that, at the end of the day, a good chunk of photography comes down to being in the right place at the right time. There’s a lot that you can plan for that will go a long way and being patient really does help, but most of the things that you come across that you’d take a photo of are due to luck. That’s what I think.

Suffice to say, I really enjoy photography. It’s one of the few arts that you can take almost anywhere with you.

I’m sure that It’ll remain enjoyable.

Cityscape at Darling Harbour

Here’s a shot the city taken from Darling Harbour.

It feels a bit like Tumbalong Park is boxed in here by the sprawl of buildings.

I like that the sky contrasts with the buildings due to its softness against the sharpness of the buildings.

I also like that the green contrasts with how the drab colours of the buildings.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 205: Power Walking to Work

This morning I walked all the way to work from home.

Wait, that’s not entirely correct.

I didn’t just walk all the way to work. I power walked.

That is to say that I walked with power. Every step I took was mighty and the direction that my feet were taking had purpose. There was nothing that could stop me as I walked tall and at a speed that some would consider as being accelerated from the normal.

I was master of the pavement as I strode with a confidence that was unbridled. Pure distilled confidence.

I kept a good time as it was always going to be my destiny. No one in the history of eternity had ever walked like this and there will never be someone who could best me, for I was the most ultimate that had ever been and there was no ability to deny it, for if the heinous crime of such denial were to ever occur, the denier would have immediately been corrected as they watched in awe my passing with a speedy gait past their physical presence which would lead to them correcting themselves immediately and begging the sky for forgiveness.

I was moving so fast and with such determination that I could see my destination in under an hour.

In fact, it was under fifty minutes. However, it was close. I think it was somewhere between two and three minutes before the fifty minute mark.

That was the time taken from the café that was around the corner from my place to my destination which was the building in which I work as that is where my place of occupation resides, as opposed to somewhere that it doesn’t reside, for today is a day of work and I am in the office and basking in the humble glory that my walk of EXTREME power bestowed upon me, for it was something that was readily earned by myself and no one else will be able to hold the title that I now own.

So, with all that being said, I walked to work today. I wanted to cycle but my wrist is still recovering and I don’t have enough money on my travel card, so I had a decent excuse to power walk all the way to work.

Quite frankly, it was satisfying and I would do it again. It didn’t take much longer than public transport (it was roughly an additional ten minutes) and it didn’t cost me anything to do, sans a bit of energy.

I didn’t get any new views to experience, but I’m mostly happy that I was able to get from my door to work in under an hour. It’s rather satisfying to know that I can do it and whilst I shouldn’t be too satisfied, I feel that right now it is okay.

Now need to see if I can get my time down below forty minutes.

Anyway, the atmosphere was good and something something power walk.

Fast, like my power walk.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 204: Miasmatic Vortex of Anguish and Terror

So I’m waiting to do some course work right now with one of my fellow students and they’re on the phone so I thought I’d warm up my hands despite my wrist on my right arm still hurting, as that way at least I’ll feel a little more limber right now and be able to type away what I need to type away at a much faster pace than I usually do and hopefully with a few mistakes as possible… I hope.

Today is the day that I’m going to start working as hard as I can to make sure I do as well as I can with the subjects in which I am currently studying as that will at least mean that I can say I put in some genuine effort for a change instead of being a lazy bastard and then cramming like crazy right at the end and flipping out whilst cramming in some kind of miasmatic vortex of anguish and terror that caresses my very soul every night as the end of the semester draws nearer and nearer.

“procrastinate. You know you will enjoy it much more than assume you will. Come with me and see the world of possibility”, it will say, it’s voice tempting and hypnotic as my eyes cannot be averted from the very experience that unfolds in front of me.

However, I must resist, for if I do not then surely I will only suffer and have myself to blame for refusing temptation and walking down a path better not walked along.

Am I able to? Surely I would like to believe that I am, but the issue is that I am fighting against a highly successful tempter and I am not highly successful at resisting. Perhaps I shall be completely engulfed by the vortex this time around, rather than somehow pulling my tiny sodden boat out of the waters as they slowly drag me in as they swirl around endlessly until an eternity is an eternity no more. Perhaps I will be fully submerged and that will be the last chance I will ever have, never to escape or return to a life of normality as I will eternally put everything off in order to sit down and spend time doing things that are in no way productive or conducive to my ability to study.

This would be my burden to bear and it is one that I would gladly carry so that no one else will be taken in, therefore ending the legacy of damage and procrastination and ensuring that the future would be safe from all vile tempting that dares corrupt the hearts of the masses.

No one would no and I would not be revered as a hero who halted his progress so that others could, but at least I would know that the future was safe once more.

Well, either that or I could just get to studying. That also works. Quite well from what I hear.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:27:63

So… yeah.

Study time.

A Meeting of Clouds and Sky

Over the last weekend a friend of mine from Brisbane was visiting.

We were able to catch up, so we spent some time walking around Darling Harbour.

When I had the chance to take this shot, I took it and ended up with the image below.

I like the contrast between the clouds and the clear sky. I think it’s balanced quite well.
I also like how each are reflected in the water as it makes them seem larger than they already are.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Godflesh: Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011

Roughly two years after they performed Streetcleaner at Roadburn, a live document of the performance was released on vinyl. Once the vinyl was sold out, work on a C.D. / digital release was meant to commence. It appears as though the C.D. release may no longer be in consideration, but at least the digital version is now available.

So… Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011 is the recorded performance of Streetcleaner performed at Roadburn in 2011.

It’s Streetcleaner, but live.

The atmosphere of the songs is still rather bleak, although  in places it is a little less oppressive due to things being lost in translation.

Some of the songs Streetcleaner were recorded with Paul Neville as a second guitarist. Due to the way the two guitars worked with each other, the bleak atmosphere was  heavily reinforced. “Streetcleaner” had the most obvious benefit of this, with the guitar that played over the rhythm being much more sparse and being much more simple in execution. Sitting on top of everything, it added a lot of menace to the sound. Now that Godflesh are solely a duo, the second guitar has been replaced with synth and sampling which is unfortunately not completely up to the task of replicating the same atmosphere. At times it sits a bit too far away from everything and sounds a bit out of place. It may have been better for Justin to replicate the sounds of the second guitar himself whilst Ben Green had more distortion on his bass, but this could have lead to a situation where the sound ended up being far less clear than intended.

With that being said, Justin Broadrick does do a good job of playing each song. Part of what makes Streetcleaner sound the way it does is the focus on more discordant, sparser playing balanced with occasional melody as a counterbalance, and a reduction on the importance of chords. Justin hits each note with no obvious issue without sounding as though they were overly-rehearsed.

Quite possibly the best thing about the performance is that it reinforces the importance of Ben Green. His playing is much more evident due his bass commanding more presence than usual, with Justin working in unison with him or playing something that compliments. The thickness of it is highly emphasised in many of the songs as it plods along, still providing a solid frame with which to work.

The drum programming is quite punchy and feels much more present here, although at times it becomes much louder than than in other songs, almost becoming distracting. It’s difficult to tell as to whether this was due to the mixing in the live setting or some other reason, but  it does remain an issue. However, what is more important is that there’s no problems with the programming failing, and within each song they remain consistent in volume.

One of the most overt changes is how the vocals are handled. Justin Broadrick’s scream is much more aggressive and blunt than when Streetcleaner was recorded, yet somehow this seems to lessen the impact as it lacks the intensity that his less conscious-sounding screaming did on the record. To be doing vocals in the same way this far into his life would most likely have done more damage to his vocal chords than his current style and admittedly it does manage to enhance some of the songs quite well, but overall it does have less impact. However, this should not be taken as a criticism as, again, it seems more out of necessity than anything else.

Furthermore, whilst his clean vocals have never been the best, Justin’s still work well for these songs. They’ve always added another element without detracting and fit well in the atmosphere of this performance.

Streetcleaner: Live at Roadburn 2011 is decent, if a little uneven. It’s hard to tell if this was a good choice for an official documentation of how Godflesh sounds live. Whilst it is hard to fault the album performed, it might’ve been better for something that included the same amount of tracks from a few of their releases. Then again, this is a festival performance and they might not have had the luxury of choosing as the set time could have gone far over what they were allotted. With all of this being said, the songs are performed quite well. At times it does sound like a mistake has been made, but this might be due more to being familiar with Streetcleaner.

Ultimately it is an honest performance of Streetcleaner and a good capturing of how Godflesh can sound live.

Blue Mountains Landscape

Well, here’s another shot from when I went solo camping last year.

seeing something like this can one with “Wanderlust“, especially when you’re a bit further from society than usual and don’t have a car.

I really like that the view is slightly obstructed as it’s still a strong representative of nature.

The image feels like it has a bit more depth to me due to there being a fair bit of vegetation close in the shot.

I also like that you can see that there was a bit of wind around.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Down a Hill in Mona Vale

I took this photo recently whilst in Mona Vale with Ewe.

I like the tone balance of this photo, as well as the abundance of trees.
I also like that the ocean seems to just start due to the edge of the land not being visible.

I think that this is a quiet and relaxed photo.

This is my entry into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.
I recommend that you check out what other people are submitting and perhaps consider submitting something yourself.
I also recommend checking out Leanne Cole’s other work.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
