Entrance to Hawthorne Canal

Ewe and I went for a walk around the suburbs the other day.

Part of our walk had us pass through a small bit of Iron Cove.

As I had my camera with me, I decided to get a little snap happy.

Actually, I don’t think I didn’t get that snap happy but I did take a bunch of photos that I think were decent.

Here’s one of them.

I like how the underside of the overpass is reflected in the water, showing a number of lines.

I also like the sense of distance and the way the light travels.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 210: I had an Idea

The end of the week is the time to celebrate running over the road on a two-wheeled vehicle of mayhem and confusion in order to make legs so invincible that in no way they can be defeated, so long as the use of them to cycle two (or more [or less]) wheels attached to a frame made of a material that is usually sturdy can be moved around in some manner that involves what is usually a forward trajectory forever into the setting sun that may be seen and chased infinitely, but never reached as it will always be just beyond the horizon and therefore unattainable as anything other than a memory, a photo, and so on.

Yes, today I am cycling my way around the city that most people consider wonderful despite being average and more like a collection of villages that don’t communicate with each other, in order to save time and money on a commute that takes longer because Sydney is not a well-designed city and the state government thinks that the best way to deal with issues is to build roads where they’re not needed, or light rail tracks where they’re not needed, which essentially leads only to a bandage being applied to a large flesh wound.

Yes, today is the day to celebrate cycling because I said so and I can never be wrong despite mostly being wrong about many things for I am always right when it comes to matters that involve letting the wind blow through your hair, leaving you to feel free, despite the fact  that wearing a bike helmet is a legal requirement in Sydney because the noggin needs protecting, but cycling with full body armour is probably seen as not gallant and a bit of a social faux pa because apparently the spine isn’t worth as much protection as the head.

Sadly, that is the world we live in and I will not stand for it because I am sitting down and rather comfy. Quite frankly, I’d rather sit down right now than fight for something that could be unrealistic, although the idea of having some sort of protective clothing that can absorb the energy of an impact so in order to reduce injury whilst still being flexible is probably quite a good one.

I wonder as to how feasible it would be.

If something like that was available to the public for an affordable price, it would reduce the amount of costs related to injury as well as potentially reduce stress on hospital occupancy and hospital staff.

It would also incentivise traffic reduction on the roads as more people may become interested in cycling as, whilst one would have to remain paranoid whilst on the roads still, at least the chances of any possible fatal injuries would be reduced.

Well, I think it might be a good idea and be a great incentive to get a lot of people getting more active as the bicycle master race takes over.

A bit faster and no more coherent.
Still, I think that this just might be one of my better ones purely based on the use of language.

Providential Point

Here’s a shot that I took when Ewe and I walked from Otford and Bundeena.

We were past the halfway point in the Royal National Park and well into the late afternoon when this shot was taken.

I like this shot as it shows that whilst there is plenty of beauty in nature, there’s also a bit of “Danger!“, especially in the landscape that should always be taken into consideration when you’re out in the bush.

It’s easy to follow a track to the open area at the tip of the land here, but it’s also easy to go off that path and then fall off the cliff side.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Screen

Whilst I was walking around Darling Harbour with my friend from Queensland we came across this screen. It had a lot of information moving across at a rather high speed.

I decided to come back on an evening with my tripod and get a long exposure, with the result being seen below.

What was being displayed had changed when I returned. The information was much slower and would cycle through a few different things.

I like that the information has blurred into light and the image that is moving across doesn’t appear as to how it did on the night.

I tried to get a perspective where this looked like it was coming from really far away. I don’t think it worked as well as I hoped, but I still like how the angle still affected the image.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.
The first Monochrome Madness of each month is themed, with this one being “Movement or Moving”.

I recommend that you check out what other people are submitting and perhaps consider submitting something yourself.
I also recommend checking out Leanne Cole’s other work.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

feedtime: Gas Review

feedtime have released a new album called Gas. Since getting back together, they’ve played a few shows here and there and have now come to release their nth album. Whilst they seem to be going from strength to strength, the question is: does this new album have enough in the tank to get them a little further down that highway, or are feedtime now running on empty?

feedtime have never sounded much like a punk rock or noise rock band. They certainly have worked well within those frameworks, but they seem to have taken a lot more from blues and in rock ‘n’ roll than anything else. That doesn’t change on Gas, with many of the songs sounding as though these were the primary basis.

Taking that into consideration, feedtime sound like they always have always; noisy, dry, direct and primitive in delivery, playing as loose and tight as they always have and still invoking an Australian sound.
With that being said, there’s a bit more variation to be found here without sounding like anything other than feedtime, with the closer “Shovelhead” being the most obvious, being a rather warm, expansive-sounding song that still retains most of the sound elements of the previous thirteen tracks.

The lyrics are as direct as the music, which is to great benefit. Whilst high reaching, lofty, subtle meaning has a place, it would have been overreaching for here. They don’t aim to be anything other than straightforward. Paired with vocal deliveries that have aged without weakening, they match the music well and are more effective as a result.

Gas is a welcome return for a band that hasn’t released anything in a long time. There are some slight changes, but it remains consistent with their previous releases. It doesn’t lack in energy and there’s enough here to keep it interesting without going for so long that it wears out its welcome. Gas might not be the best thing that feedtime have released, but it’s still worth hearing.

Narrabeen from Afar

Here’s a shot of Narrabeen taken from Mona Vale.

I think this shot gives a good idea of how long, yet small Narrabeen can appear, as it’s a rather small place.

I like that the ocean feels somewhat still, despite it clearly being in motion.

I also like that the close vegetation provides some slight framing to the shot.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 209: Something Something Enjoying Writing

Something something pen and paper.
Something something writing well.

Now that that’s pout of the way, let’s get on with it.

Right now I’m listening to some music that I need to review sooner rather than later as it’s well overdue and yet I have no idea what to say, even though I have a mostly coherent idea of what to write in my mind.

I also am feeling a bit hungry and am trying to hold off as it will be time for the land of rest and slumber soon and that is something that I just cannot back out of participating in unless I decide that I want to feel quite tired for another day, therefore impacting my ability to do stuff yet again because I’m the most brilliant person in the history of ever because I decided that the best thing in my life for me and everyone else at any given moment would be to lessen my ability to do anything so that others would feel shame and hopelessness when they saw me excel at everything without even breaking a sweat.

What was I talking about?

Review writing…

There’s a certain art to analysing something.

Well, perhaps not an art, but there’s a certain something to analysing something not for the purposes of enjoyment, but for trying to work out what is going on and writing something that is observational (well, as observational as you possibly can be) instead of just writing something that reeks with bias and a lack of understanding of what it is you’re trying to review (which I have done plenty of myself).

Reviewing is certainly interesting. Perhaps I should get back to writing this review instead of typing about writing reviews as all I’m doing right now is wasting my time, although that’s not anything new or unexpected and I’m not sure why I’d bother doing anything else other than wasting my own time repeatedly, although that doesn’t pay money.

Then again, neither does writing reviews.

It would seem as though no matter what, I am wasting my time.

Or am I?

The truth of the matter is that, whilst I would like to get paid for writing reviews, I don’t mind that I don’t get paid as I write because I enjoy writing. That’s why there’s so many of these posts that go nowhere and repeat the same things over and over.

Well, that and I am of limited scope, although I do continually push outward whilst moving inward at the same time as much as I can, so hopefully that does come to the benefit of all the readers here.

If not, then I can only keep on trying. Well, even if it does, I’ll keep trying anyway.
Until I can finally run through the wall that I keep bashing against, I must keep on trying. It’s the only way.

There’s no other options.

Eventually I’ll succeed, or something.

I still need ten more words to finish this post.

Water Over a Rock Platform

I took this photo thinking that Ewe was pointing out the raised rock instead of the rock platform. I wanted to take a picture of it and Ewe was pointing it out, so I went ahead.

However, he was pointing out the rock platform and the water that moved over its surface.

His eye was much better than mine in this location.

I like the pattern formed by the water as it moves across the platform.

I also like that the rock platform is mostly submerged and yet still clearly visible.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 208: I Thought it was Winter

So I was going to write about how it’s weird that even though we’re now in winter, that the weather hasn’t been as cold as it should have been over the past few days. Then I realised that currently on the continent that is known as Australia it is not winter that is grasping at the landscape that exposes itself as a massive expanse around us, but it is instead Autumn.

This is something that I should have known by now, considering that I’ve lived in Australia since I was born, but for some reason I thought that we were in Winter.

Perhaps it has to do with the sudden changes in the weather.
Recently it had been quite cold. It was the kind of weather to put on a jacket and gloves, as well as pants.

Now it’s a little warmer than it had been. It’s warm enough to not worry as much about how many blankets are on the bed as not as many are needed.

Perhaps it’s short memory, but this is something that I find concerning.

We should be going through a gradual shift into colder weather at the moment and instead we have warm weather once more. It’s almost as though we’ve a few days in Spring as Spring approaches Summer. It’s not boiling hot, thankfully, but it is warm enough to get around in shorts quite comfortably.

Perhaps it is a sign of changing times. Perhaps it is a sign that we’re doing far too much damage to the environment and really need to slow down or come to a complete stop. Perhaps it is a sign that I’m not remembering things as being how they normally are. I’d like to believe that the case is closer to the first thing listed there, but I cannot be entirely sure for I do not have enough information to cast doubt from my mind.

Essentially I’m concerned about the sudden weather change as much as I am concerned about the fact that I forgot that we’re supposed to be in Autumn instead of Winter at the moment, but it really has gone from being unusually cold to unusually warm in a rather quick succession.

Such is the way of the weather when it comes to matters that I don’t understand and probably never will completely understand in any form that is beyond a blunt, simplistic way, for I lack the knowledge or the ability to understand (as of this time of writing) to truly discern what things such as sudden temperature and weather shifts actually mean.

Although, with that being said if I took some subjects that focused more on climatology, I imagine that I would get a fairly solid base in which I could build knowledge of these matters upon.

I was going to say something that started with “however”, but then I realised that it might just be a good idea to do some study in that area.

It could go a long way.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:33:41

Another decent speed on something that says very little, or at least far less than it should.

Mona Vale by the Sea

Here’s a shot of Mona Vale and its beach known as Mona Vale Beach.

Well, it’s a small slice of Mona Vale.

I took this shot whilst Ewe and I were there.

I like how the colour appears in this shot, as well as how the land is framed against the ocean.

I hope you enjoy.
