Razorback Review

Razorback is a film about a boar that explodes houses.

There’s more to it than that, but it is mostly what the film is about.

The strongest element of the film is the cinematography due to how it is used.
Scenes look beautiful, grimy and intense whenever required without going into excess.
Colours and lighting set the scenes quite well and the framing helps give a strong impression of either the landscape, atmosphere, or both at any given moment.
It also helps provide a rather powerful and effective opening.

The boar of the film looks quite good as a model of a boar, but not so good as a boar. It has quite a fair bit of detail to it and looks quite menacing, but it doesn’t move as well as it could, being far more stiff at times than it should which might be why it ‘s not used too often and when it is, it’s not for long, with most shots it is featured in being a few seconds at most. Taking into consideration when Razorback was made, it’s somewhat understandable and it’s hard to see how there would have been better options for the boar.

The acting of the film is uneven. The characters are somewhat believable, although at times they do fall flat. Some of their lines feel wooden and it can be difficult to work out why some of the characters take some of their actions. With that being said, some of the actors do a much better job than others and overall no-one is necessarily unmemorable.

The way the film has been edited is weak. Sometimes a scene changes too fast and sometimes it doesn’t change fast enough. Some scenes that seem to be filler could have been removed for something with a bit more substance. There’s a part of the film that feels like it’s meant to be comedic that doesn’t quite work due to it feeling quite out of place with the rest of the film. It’s decent in its own way, but in the context of the film it’s more absurd than it needs to be.

Iva Davies’ soundtrack for the film underscores a number of scenes quite well. The music knows when to rise and fall and never jumps out farther than it should.

Overall, Razorback isn’t the worst film. It’s quite good in some parts and weaker in others. It is worth seeing for the cinematography alone, which I could have written quite a lot about but am not going to (at least for the time being) due to how easily it would be to ruin the experience of seeing it for the first time.

It could have been better overall, but it is a decent film.

Snails Bay After Sunset

I was back at Ballast Point Park on the weekend to try and get the sunset.

I did managed to capture the end of the sunset, as well as this shot after setting the aperture low.

I like that the clouds came across as a vague haze in this shot.

I like how far the reflection of the lights reach.

I tried to process this as closely to how it appeared when viewed on my camera as I found it to be an interesting colour balance.

I’m not sure if I was successful, but I do like the result.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 213: Fear of Completing a Review

So in all the writing I have done over the past few days (other than here, two major assignments that I’m slowly dragging my way through), it seems that I have reach an impasse in regards to a review that I wanted to start a couple of weeks ago and kind of forgot about and am now trying to write but am having trouble with due to having what I think might be the best opener, descriptor and closer all in one sentence that is comprised of no more or less than ten words, and that annoys me somewhat.

It annoys me as I want to write more about the item that is being reviewed and I’ve managed to sum it up much better than I thought I could with so few words.

Maybe I’m just really attached to the sentence and don’t want to admit that I am, as it will mean that I will inevitably have to write more about the item that is being reviewed, although either way I will be writing more as I’m sure that I can say more.

Perhaps the sentence manages to encapsulate everything that you need to know about the film and is brilliant and eloquent in its form and design, revealing everything and leaving everyone wanting to know more.

Perhaps I am overthinking this far more than I need to, should stop writing about other things and get to writing about the thing that is to be reviewed, get it out of the way and move onto other things that I need to take care of that require much more attention, such as the two large assignments that I still have to work on completing to the best of my ability, although it’s more likely that procrastination will take over with it’s iron-clad fist and dominate my desire to get stuff done.

However, I think that the ultimate reason is that it is fear.

Yes. Fear. I fear that I will surpass that sentence comprised of only ten words and then I will not know what to do, feeling emotions of success and defeat within myself.

Fear is a  powerful feeling. It drives people together and apart, starts and prevents wars, and drives us to overcome our perceived shortcomings.

It can also stop us from working on something, for fear of success and having nothing to do after completion.

Fear can drive people to do plenty of odd things.

It is fear and nothing else at all that prevents me from continuing the review.

Perhaps I should throw in the towel and leave the review incomplete. It might  be the best course of action to take in this path, for success might just open paths that I am not ready to travel.

Perhaps I should stop pretending that it is fear and admit that I was looking for something to write about right now as I haven’t finished the review as of yet.

However, that would be revealing the grand truth.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:18:65

There’s other stuff that I do want to write about, but this somehow took precedence even though I wasn’t too sure as to what I was going to write when I started writing.

It’s ridiculous, so I’m happy. I think.

Written at work.

A Fire at Smiths Lake

Here’s a picture of a fire at Smiths Lake.

You can see how it does not burn out of control.

On the second night of the field trip some of my fellow students had a fire going for some reason.

I took this picture (among others) of it as I liked seeing how the flame moved.
It might also have to do with my lack of seeing fires in person most of the time.

I like how there’s a few trails of flame rising from the main body.
I also like how solid the fire appears.

It seems to be quite intense in its appearance and form.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 212: Working on a Group Assignment

The race toward the end is on, although we’re racing against the clock as time slowly decreases and we sweat our tiny little heads as our palms shake with the sweat pouring out of  the porous pores on them, as we are lost, confused little children that are in a whirlpool of despondent confusion and bewilderment.

Group assignments rear their ugly head once more as we are forced together into a can far smaller than our bodies, preventing anything remotely comfortable to be achieved as we panic in our squalor and slide against our sweaty selves, trying to push out for room and oxygen as we suffocate in our hubris and search for egress when the only solution is seeing it the whole way through.

It must be stated that this time the can is a little larger and we are able to at least flail our arms in panic as we take short breaths and slowly punch away whilst the date the information is required by looms ever so closer, berating and taunting us whilst we try to resist and seem to be failing.

Although, that may not actually be the case this time around.

This machine is struggling along, but it gains more traction and acceleration every single day of work and whilst the panic is still there, the machine is allowing us a little more control over the direction. We are wrangling with a beast that ushers in chaos and destruction; a beast that so dangerously veers from side to side on the track that it is trying to force us along, and despite being in a state that may look like a war of attrition, we are finally winning.

the steps are smaller than we would desire, but there is success found in every moment as momentum gradually builds and builds until we are going so fast and efficiently that the stop that we reach when we are finally finished with working on this assignment of desire, we come to a complete stop and find ourselves shocked at the fact that we’ve finally finished, breathe a collective sigh of relief and begin our untangling, getting out of the can that we are trapped in and each take showers so desperately needed and yet cannot be felt due to the cake-layer of filth that has accumulated upon our flesh and skin.

The assignment will not beat us. It may cause us to stress and panic as it throws us against everything that it can, but we will not surrender to its force and brutality. We will coalesce into a being far greater than the sum of our parts and final work our way through the thorns and bristle that it shall raise in our path, yet we shall deliver on time and there will be no stopping until the end has been reached.

Until that moment is reached, we may only continue to work under the heavy fire of panic to reach the desired outcome we share.

I like how this came out overly poetic and dramatic.

Kirribilli in the Afternoon

This was taken shortly after the most recent photo of the Sydney Opera House that I’ve put up here.

I think I was trying to play with the perspective of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in this shot.

I think.

I like the view of Kirribilli in this shot as it shows the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge seemingly engulfing some of the buildings, which I imagine is not the greatest experience, albeit one you’d eventually not often notice.

I also like the warmth of this photo, the way the moon is sitting in the sky above the clouds, as well as the pattern of the clouds.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Complaining About People at Work Complaining

This morning is going to be another complaint about people at work because I can.

When I started working this  morning I was unfortunate enough to overhear people complaining about them not having the ability to circumvent their doing their job.

Now, before I go on I should state that in regards to this issue, I kind of agree with the people complaining about  it due to it being something that does usually ensure that something can be resolved sooner rather than later, therefore leaving customers to be much more satisfied rather than have them wait for an answer that will probably amount to “we’re still getting more information”, as what the complaint that the people I’m complaining about is related to is getting information directly from the source.

I also have to agree with the side that is being complained about. Both sides are correct. However, I think that the side being complained about is more correct.

For certain investigations in my office we need to send a request off regardless of how large the issue happens to be and in following up we’re meant to go through a manager instead of the person investigating the issue.

I do think that, whilst this has really good intentions, it causes the investigation to be slowed down as there’s many things that we could just go to speak to the person about that would be resolved quite quickly.

On the other hand, there’s few people that can do the job of investigating these issues and not enough ability to allow more people to do it, so in that regard the less the  person is being asked questions about stuff, the more they can focus on doing their job.

So, here’s where the complaining about the complainers comes in.

The people who were complaining were complaining quite loudly this morning about being approached by the person who was processing their investigations during the week due to them asking the person questions directly. The person had come up to them and told them that they were too busy to go through it and to stop messaging them.

I agree that the person did not need to approach the complainers and could have sent a message. However, I also understand that when frustrated, sometimes the desire to approach someone is better because at least it’s a lot easier to not come off as a condescending asshole. Besides which, speaking to someone in person always seems to feel more honest and respectable.

Whilst these two people were complaining this morning, they referred to the action as power tripping, not quite understanding what power tripping actually is. The way they spoke and used words was in a manner that suggested that it was beneath them and as though they were affected in a bad way. It reeked of attitude and the best way that I can sum it up is as describing them as sounding like petulant children.

There’s probably not much purpose in complaining about this as it’s not likely to do anything other than let me blow off some steam.

Still, I always feel it necessary to highlight crappy attitude.

Train Approaches Sydney City at Night

Whilst heading home from Redfern a few weeks ago I took this photo.

It was slightly difficult as I had no tripod and had to hold the camera very still on a wall to prevent it from tipping forward.

Had the tripod been with me, I would have been able to set it up at a low height on the wall.

I like that the train stands out so much against everything.
Part of it almost seems like it’s not meant to be there.

I hope you enjoy.

Soon

So I haven’t written anything poetic in a while.

I started this off as a word challenge and it ended up coming out like this so I stopped timing and finished it off.

Not great by any measure, but I am quite satisfied with the result.

Well, for now at least.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

—–

Soon the afternoon shall be well into its late period  and I will be chasing the sunset in order to get photos that shall cast the urban areas of Sydney in a different light.

Soon I shall be chasing the atmosphere as I attempt to call it down and spread the colours that come from the sunset across the sky and capture it as a frozen moment in time.

Soon I shall be on my way from work and enjoying a view that is provided by a canvass that seldom ceases to impress with its size and epic nature.

Soon I shall be heading home and preparing to head out to capture the sky.

Soon I will be ready with my camera and enjoying the view more than I would like to admit at this current point in time.

Soon the sun shall set and I shall be ready to do my work as one who is merely capturing a moment in time and witnessing a form of history.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 211: An Annoyance

So today before I left work I had a little bit of an inconvenience.
This inconvenience should have remained a minor thing. However, as is the case with a whole bunch of things that can end up eating up far more time than you would ever want them to, therefore slowing you down much more and wasting far more time than ever necessary, I ended up losing about twenty minutes of my commute time and had to pedal hard to get to university on time.

I was in a team meeting with the rest of my team. I think I was a participant. I’m not sure.

Anyway, there was a team meeting in which I was involved that ended when I was to leave and make my way to my location of study and learning. I left the meeting a few minutes early in order to be able to wrap up anything that I needed to before leaving.

However, when I got to my desk, someone was sitting there and getting ready to log in. I told them I was still there and they said sorry and that they didn’t realise.
I thought that this was rather interesting as my bike helmet was sitting quite openly on my desk and my bag, whilst under my desk was quite difficult to avoid.
I pointed this out and then proceeded to ignore what they were saying because it was more about how they didn’t realise. One of my superiors came up and apologised and said that they had thought I left. I think that I pointed out my stuff being there once more.

I was able to get my computer back and then had to wait for it to restart before logging back in and having to begin what I was taking care of before going into the meeting once more. It was rather frustrating.

I think I’ve written about the selfishness of people being surprising to me. I am pretty sure I’ve also covered stupidity. Despite that, I still remain surprised. I also don’t have the time for dealing with other people deciding that the best way to approach a situation is to decide to not be aware of what is around you and proceed without thinking.

I am somewhat glad that I received an apology. It did seem sincere. However, I still ended up being put out and had to then cycle as hard as I could which is not something I wanted to do because I still need to save energy for tonight as I am still going to be busy for a while.

Well, I do have to admit that I didn’t have to pedal as hard as I could. I could have taken my time and ended up arriving to my lecture late, but I would rather make sure I’ve got as good a chance as passing as I can allow myself.

People being stupid should have to be dealt with.
They need to think more often.

I’m happy with the speed, but now in reflection I don’t think that this was worth writing about.

Still, I’ve written it, so here it is.
