Five-Hundred Word Challenge 929: What is The Time?

What is the time?

It is the time to churn something out. Should’ve done it this morning but now is the right time and so I race on ahead. I don’t have long as soon work resumes, but I will get there. I will get to the end of this and then do whatever it is that I need to do from there. Need to make sure that my hands don’t tear off and need to make sure that they warm up sooner rather than later.

There are a few things of which I need to make sure of.

Right now I’m just gonna try and get this written and then move onto whatever it is that comes next, so really, it will be the same as always. However, there is a twist:

The day of work is over and I happen to be writing this after the day of work so as to get to the end of this and turn it into something of the night, though of course I don’t know if I indeed will be able to do that so I’m not focusing too much on it and instead trying to just get the thing done so that I can do the other thing nd so on and so forth.

Do wish it was a little less cold, however. Hands are not coping too well so I need to try and keep on going and try to stay warm and all of that other stuff and so on and so forth and you can already tell that I’m in a bit of a struggle. Still going to try and steer my way out of that struggle, but who knows as to what will happen? There still is plenty of space for things to go wrong and of course I am racing myself so it is likely that quality will continue to decline until I get to the end when I can then rest my hands as they need a rest as it is difficult to type when my hands are cold, but this is something that I’ve covered far, far too many times and as such I don’t really want to keep on covering it, so perhaps I will stop trying to cover it and instead move onto something else, but I am not sure as to what else there is that is out there. It is a quiet night and I am here, kind of resting and hoping that the resting continues for a while as there are a few things of which I need to take care of so there is no real rest for me, but at let I got this typed out quickly, as though that is an achievement that trumps quality; something of which I feel I should spend more, rather than less time pursuing.

That all said, my neck hurts so I’m going to wrap this one up somewhere around here and then go back to resting for a bit.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 04:38:53

Messy writing. I have a feeling that if I did this in the morning then it would read much better.

Written at home.

Outer Side of Watsons Bay

It had been a while since I was last in Watsons Bay.

Here is a photo showing a small part of the side that faces the ocean.

This is a really simple and bright photo, I think. There isn’t much going on; there’s some nice variation in colour and tone, you get a sense of a small part of the ocean’s power, and overall it’s mostly easy on the eyes.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-forty-third Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Colorful April“.

I took this photo for the challenge as I hadn’t anything that I felt fit due to either not being taken in April, or being for a gig.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This week’s challenge is curated by Amy. Next week Tina is curating.

The challenges are pretty fun and there’s a lot of room for interpretation that doesn’t get in the way of enjoyment. If you’re into photography, then I suggest participating, or at the least checking out what other people are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 928: Full of Adventuring

Going in blind on the word count but I won’t let that stop me right now as right ow I just wanna write and I just wanna get the writing written so that I can do whatever comes next and all that other stuff.

A long day it was today and full of adventuring it was. By adventuring I mean there was little in the way of adventure, but there was some sort of walking around and so therefore I count that as adventuring to some extent. Perhaps less than I would normally desire, but it still counts so therefore I consider it as something that counts and that is where I draw the line and there is little in the way that can be said to stop me from thinking this.

It was routine walking, though there were some pleasant sights.

So anyway, I was walking around a little and there was driving and there was also some other stuff and all that other stuff.

But yeah. A long day. I don’t know as to what else I can say about it at this stage. I think that that’s where this bit of writing should end but I need to stretch it out a bit further. I need to reach my target and so in my not knowing as to how I will reach my target I will talk about how I don’t know how to reach my target, perhaps hinting that I do, but I am not aware of my knowing, or something.

It’s how it goes with these on the odd occasion.

So anyway, there was walking and there was sun. There was even a bit of waiting at times as there were times where I had to do a bit of waiting for something to happen so then I could do the thing that I originally set out to do, but that was all earlier today and now it is the evening and soon there will be the getting ready for sleep and all that other stuff. Perhaps that also is a form of adventure, or something. I don’t really know, but the thing that I do know is that what I am writing is not necessarily worth reading, but that’s okay as I get to rest soon and rest is needed very much at this stage of the evening as I am tired and being tired means rest is needed, so therefore I will organise for myself to have a bit of rest and then once the rest is done the day that will come tomorrow will be one in which new adventures will find themselves available for the taking and I shall take them in any way that I can so I can have more adventures and then the adventuring will continue and perhaps I will get to the end of it all and realise that it was not just a string of adventures, but a continuous journey to boot. That would be fun.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:04:15

Perhaps a little too tired for writing I am at the moment.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 927: Minor Discomfort

Rubbing my eyes to try and dislodge something from around them in the hope that somehow it leads to less minor discomfort. The aim is to have no minor discomfort but I’ll settle for what I can get.

I scratch my cheek rather briefly so as to scratch an itch and hope that somehow it abates. I don’t know as to how successful this act will be, but if I try then at least there will be some relief. Better to try than not to try, or so they say. I say that it depends on the situation.

I’m waking up, but I am awake and I am alert. Perhaps a bit inert, but alert nonetheless.

I am writing this and I am aware of my writing this as I write it, but it is something that is read after the fact. My writing about my writing as I write it doesn’t matter if I express it in present tense as it will only be read by others after the act has been done.

Maybe it does matter and I’m just discrediting it somehow. I don’t know.

What I do know is that soon there will be more of a need to be alert and awake but it is not something that I want to get into too much at the present moment. I don’t want to think about all of that and instead I just want to continue the process of expressing banal action in a banal manner. I want to stay grounded and shuffle about. There will be no lifting of the feet and there will be no jumping or leaping. It will all be shuffling, though perhaps I can avoid that and live a sedentary life for a short period of time.

Maybe I cannot, but maybe I can and that would be fine for the present moment. Not sure as to why it would, but it would and so that is something I shall choose to try and embrace for a little while. However, a little while has come and gone and so I keep on trying to put it all off.

Need to rub my eye once more but this time it is not to dislodge anything. It is more of a reflexive action to provide a perception of comfort. It is not tangible, though maybe it is and once more I am discrediting something I do not understand much of, much to my lack of credit.

It should all soon be something forgotten, however, as the action is both meaningless and meaningful there is no weight of appreciation behind my ability to do what it is that I do and therefore I find myself once more moving onto something else. All of this is routine and it will remain as such until I get to the point where I realise things. For a brief moment it will no longer be routine, but it won’t be long before it all fades in the rear-view mirror.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:13:15

Pretty mediocre writing, though perhaps a little smoother in flow. Feels inconsistent overall, I think.

Cargo Carriages

Here is a line of cargo carriages.

I feel like this is a moodier photo than the individual objects suggest.
Still, I like how it turned out. I feel that there’s something satisfying about the image.

Eyeliner: Drop Shadow

This was a review I tried to start and finish very quickly.

Initially the idea was to start and finish the whole review within two hours. I figured I’d aim for an hour of writing and an hour of editing. Instead I started it two days ago, finished it and started editing yesterday and finished editing today.

It was one of the easiest times I’ve had writing and editing a review in a long time. Might be one of the easiest times I’ve had period. Some stuff was re-written during editing but it was all in places that seemed quite obvious. I didn’t have to redo almost the entire thing from scratch which helped.

I was trying to be a bit more “extravagant” with my writing but I don’t think I carried through the whole way. Oh well.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going and (aside from the next few weeks) new episodes are available through there first.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Eyeliner: An artistic expression in the purest sense from New Zealand’s bastion of certain electronica, Luke Rowell.

Drop Shadow: The (currently) most recent release under the Eyeliner moniker; a moniker used to explore alternate modes and moods of the expression of sound in order to further the goal of extending the medium of connection by producing vibrations perceived by bones and eventually translated into something perceived as “sound”.

In these endeavours to explore that which is and that which may be not, Drop Shadow goes the only way that it truly can in order to find what sound style can best carry the waves of tomorrow into the ears of today: MIDI.

Oft it is a cruel irony that MIDI sounds exist within. Frequently derided, disparaged, denigrated and decried as a  pale imitation of an approximation of “the real thing” through sounds readily associated with it, yet unknowingly appreciated and respected due to its ability to fill out space in a vast, amorphic and enduring landscape due to its flexibility; especially when contained within the constraints of the song format. As such, there is a lot that MIDI often does without any sense of suspicion from the listener.

However, rather than vindicate its legitimacy as a way of creating sounds to the cultured masses through the use of sampled sounds in a way that cries angst and shouts torment into the haunted heart of society, creating grand orchestras that have the same kind of poignancy as, say, Bartok, instead Luke Rowell does what he can to vindicate its legitimacy by taking the most synthesised of sounds and crafting an album that evokes an era many hold a deep-seeded nostalgia for. We return to times often considered simpler, though they most certainly weren’t; it’s just an ideal we embrace in order to better reconcile the occurrences of the current era against its expectations.

In that regard Drop Shadow might attempt to freeze time for a moment, though it exists as an album experienced as time flows forward at a rate of one second of time per second of time. At the same time, in terms of narrative the album’s tracks seem to span a period of time truncated to the limitations of its own format; whilst the passing of time occurs during listening to the album, the compressed expression of time allows for experiencing time at two different rates.

Partially due to this, eventually Drop Shadow must come to an end, but before that, how does it begin? With the mood and image piece known as “Los Angeles”.

It is here where Luke Rowell most appropriately announces this era of Eyeliner. The initial formations of perhaps an idealised metropolis appear, quickly growing into a suggested image. Spaced notes ring out into the air, preparing for something bigger. The beat finds its place, the groove begins and the song starts gliding along. It all feels good. It feels cooool in its movement and sets a tone, sound-wise, for what follows.

Of course it would be remiss to ignore that the rest of Drop Shadow follows suit to an extent; Not every track looks to paint the same scene or provide the same mood. Rather than follow the opener with something highly energetic, the gentle “American Beach” comes next. What normally might be the opener, or perhaps even a middle track comes second here; Its peaceful flow shifts the energy and reveals the entryway to the album’s remainder. Dare you enter it? Perhaps the answer is yes.

Finding a middle ground between the first two tracks, “Contact” speaks of something slow and supple. It’s warm, comforting and holds a steady, firm groove. Synth sounds awash with a sense of something passionately expressed call outward. There’s something sad and touching here, but there’s no wallowing.

This sense of expression continues through “Promise”, reaching its first peak in “Keep Calm”. At first it is quiet and pensive. Eventually a chaotic saxophone gains footing until the hard, firm sound of what might be piano firmly and suddenly shifts the nature of the experience. Vocals rise out in response and this remains the time to keep calm and listen to the waves gently lapping against the sand.

At this point Drop Shadow feels much like it has moved from day and into the evening. Through this it has carried a heartfelt and perhaps bittersweet feel in places. Of course that could be something inherent to what we attach to music of this kind, but it remains something difficult to dismiss. There is a strong suggestion of something heavier behind the sounds; Even though there is a sense of fun in the songs, that suggestion remains difficult to shake.

At “Carry On” the mood lightens up and the album moves into a new realm of existence. The sounds of an era’s funk and pop remain dominant but the melodies become less weighted and more uplifting without losing substance. In this process the slow jam of “Coffee News” finds itself neatly positioned before the two title tracks; both of which almost feel as though they are a mirror of each other, and perhaps they are.

Following these once more beatless composition returns. At this point Drop Shadow is past midnight, or perhaps just before it and, in a sense, winding down. “Invisible Mask” holds a sense of longing, as well as a tension that gradually builds and releases. However, it does not look for intensity or heavy grief, but rather finds a slight sense of peace and calm; both of which come forward more so in the atmospheric and moody “Potpourri”. Both tracks sound as though they’re looking inward and by the time they finish we’re a bit closer to daylight.

The beat returns in “Quiet Keyboard”, as well as the sense of daytime. Phrased in terms of a new day, the song carries itself forward in an upbeat manner. However, all is not completely upbeat and that bittersweet sensation remains, lingering through the melody.

It is fitting then that Drop Shadow now finds itself away from the beginning and commences its final track. “Reverie” holds itself as an emotional piece whilst concluding what came before; Sounds of the past brought into the future of the present as a medium for expression. Steady, sturdy, strong and yet gentle, and perhaps more cathartic and climactic than originally implied. The spaced sounds keep the song joyous, refusing to collapse under the weight of prior compositions. It understands those previous shapes and moods, but it strides forward. It looks toward an uncertain future with confidence.

Hearing these songs recorded using a set of “organic” sounds might be interesting, but there likely would be something lost. Perhaps there wouldn’t, but it’s hard to deny that the specific use of MIDI gives Drop Shadow a certain shape. It creates a debt to the past; at the same time the album that looks forward. Perhaps due to the use of MIDI Drop Shadow is easy to dismiss to the svelte gestalt listener’s ears. However, they only serve to cheat themselves out of discovery, for this album is more than just a sound collection; it expresses something Luke Rowell feels in a much more tasteful and eloquent way than a surface listen could ever suggest.

Drop Shadow is available here.

Shadows in The Megalong Valley

Here is a photo of part of The Megalong Valley.

I think that the clouds look rather massive here. I think that that is in part due to how the valley appears, as well as how open most of the landscape appears.

It might also have to do with where I was positioned.

The shadows create a pattern that helps get across the clouds’ size, as well as their shape. It also works well with the unshaded areas as there’s differentiation that helps to draw the eye across the valley, I think.

Some of the developed area can be seen, but it’s rather small in comparison to the vastness of the valley and what lies beyond.

Overall I think this photo is pretty calm and relaxed, though not without a slight undercurrent of foreboding due to the suggestion that perhaps there may be rain coming.

I can confirm, however, that it did not rain.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 116: Get This Written

Alright, so where do I even begin with this one? Other than at the start, of course.

I’m trying to work out what it is that I want to say at the current moment. Of course that is something that I always try to work out, though perhaps not always so take this sentence with a healthy dose of salt. Best way to approach it and you get away with not trying to reach for deeper meaning for no reason as there is no deeper meaning that exists in that sentence… without any reason, of course.

Well, that seems like it was the best place to start but I don’t know if it was the best way to start. I think that there are better ways in which I could have started this bit of writing, but here we are. We are no longer at the start of this writing and we are moving further and further away with each word written and each letter placed down on this representation of something that is not paper, but might suggest the image of paper; something of which has no bearing on the fact that I am currently writing this out with no particular aim in place.

I made it through the day and now I’m trying to get this written out so I can go onto the next thing. The weekend ahead is busy and this is a bit of warming up. However, I treat this bit of writing the same as I treat most of my writing: something that I will forget about until I somehow remember it at some point down the track. Who knows how far down the track that will be? I don’t, but there is always guessing which can help me get to a rough estimation of when the remembering of this bit of writing will occur.

I am guessing that it will happen at some point between after I finish the writing and slightly after the point in which I remember the writing existing.

So now that that is out of the way I guess I should move on and try to work out some other things, but those things don’t involve trying to remember what it is that I should have probably started this bit of writing off with as I have no idea what it is that I should have started this bit of writing off with. As such I am merely twirling about in a circular pattern as I let the lack of anything driving me drive me forward.

Well, there is the desire to write, but I’d much rather pretend that that is not there and I’m merely running on nothing at all. I want to pretend that somehow, even though it is clear as to what is going on with this bit of writing that there is nothing behind it whatsoever. There is no drive; no desire that compels me to keep on going and push on forward with what it is that I am doing which just so happens to be the act of writing. However, despite how much I pretend I cannot run from the truth; that I desire to write and I desire to write at some length and as such I am entertaining that desire.

That all said, there needs to be a bit more. Not always, of course, but maybe right now there needs to be a bit more that is helping to drive this along. It is difficult to always sustain a sense of aimless rambling, though perhaps it is not always difficulty. However, it is difficult to keep on writing at the moment as currently I exist in a world of pain and probably should rest, but I am a stubborn beast and so will keep on going toward the end of this and hope that somehow I link it all together and it all makes sense and so on and so forth.

I should probably stop saying that so often, but perhaps the reason that I do is that it is easy to say. It is easy to lock into a few select things and then churn things out based around them. It is not that I set out to do this, but it is something that I do and it is something that I am keenly aware of doing and am hoping to eventually break away from, much like I hope to break away from the rut of which I am firmly planted within so that I can move onto writing about other things and hopefully find a way to challenge myself.

Maybe it is a sign that I am in desperate need of a break but that is not something that I hope to entertain at any point in time. What I hope to do is just keep on powering on and slowly move away from one thing to another and paint some sort of messy picture that makes no sense and has no discernible meaning. I hope to do this through the power of words, but there is no telling as to whether that will actually happen or not. It probably won’t, but it might. There is only one way to find out, however, and that is through the process of going through it all and doing the thing and seeing what happens when I get to the end of it all. When that happens, I do not know. I do know that I will keep on going for a while, however.

Maybe there will be no shift and this will continue to be the same thing over and over again. Maybe that is what will happen. I don’t know at the moment, but I do hope that is not the path I go down. I hope I move away from that, but there is no telling right now. I may need to take a break at some point, but much like many things, I’ll find out later on.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 11:26:03

Fast and messy.

There are things that I need to work on and refinement certainly is one of them.

I think it is time to really, REALLY start getting out of the hole I’ve dug myself into and find a way to not go back in.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 926: Tired Rambling

I can feel it. I can feel how tired I am and it hurts so much and so on and so forth.

Truly I don’t know as to why I’ve done little to lift a finger to the keyboard and bang out some more crab over the past few days, but I am doing it right now and let me tell you, it just feels like an arduous task right now.

Truly the week has been a busy one, but perhaps that is not an excuse of which I can use and perhaps I need to consider that perhaps it is good to be busy, or something. I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I can tell you that I am going somewhere. Perhaps there will be an end message to the whole thing and perhaps it will come out of nowhere at first until you go back and read the whole thing and realise that the message was always there. Sometimes that is how it all works and how it all works is what it is that I want to explain, though perhaps not today as today I am fighting fatigue to do the job that I’m paid to do. Unfortunately my job is not to fight fatigue. If it was… I wouldn’t be paid very well.

So anyway, I’m here and I’m struggling hard with writing this, but I do know that if I persist then I surely will get to the end and have something to show for all of it, but perhaps there is nothing to show at all and all that I’m really doing is kidding myself by lulling myself into a false sense of success; something of which I’d prefer to avoid, but sometimes you just cannot avoid these kinds of things and so I  guess I should just accept the fact and move on to whatever it is that I need to move onto. That is something to explore another on another day at another time, assuming I even bother to go down that route as I most likely will forget at some stage and in that forgetting I will lose myself, only to find myself elsewhere in another world at another time and so therefore there will be other things that will lead to other, other things where there will be the discoveries of a fortune and the rewards will be as grand as they will be rich, but they won’t necessarily be sources of finance; rather, they will be the experiences and the memories generated along the way, so that will be a thing and therefore I will experience it, but perhaps I should just try and remain as close to bed today as that will mean that the rest that I will get will be utmost importance and I might just make it to the end of the day, which is something that, quite frankly, I want to do.

However, I will finish this off before moving on.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:06:31

Not good writing. Sort of okay with that right now.
Could’ve been less rambling.

Opera House Corner

Another photo of The Sydney Opera House.

I feel that this still is recognisable as the building that it is if you are familiar enough with it… maybe. Admittedly that is what I feel mostly due to having taken the shot so I have to admit that I’m not entirely certain that if I hadn’t I’d still recognise this as The Sydney Opera House, but I digress.

I like the sense of depth on this one, as well as how the sunlight falls on this particular area. There’s an interesting contrast, I think.

I hope you enjoy.
