Peter Miller: Spirits Song

So this writing about music as it happens thing is now kind of its own thing away from the word challenges.

I played “Spirits Song” a few times just to get it all down as I’m a bit drained this morning.

I think I captured an image of the song and at the same time said very little about it and I’m fine with that. Kind of makes the writing feel as though I was capturing an impression.

“Spirits Song” is from Peter Miller’s soundtrack for Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds.

I hope you enjoy.

A lonely harmonica, stretching out its lament upon some sort of sound in a hollow object, giving a dry bleakness. Harmonica drops out, the secondary sound shifts to something resembling a vocals, though remaining dry and bleak.

Vocals spaced, slightly echoing. Echo in, keep words clear and precise. Specific, careful, considered. Some sort of release. Possibly detached from the landscape.

A shift around into something a little more hopeful. Careful guitar. Single notes strike out playing a brief soliloquy among the barren landscape. The harmonica comes back in, finding something to pair up with, but this meeting is only brief and it disappears before it can truly be a meeting.

Something else rises up and the guitar goes. A melody of solitude that the harmonica tries once more to pair up with, though this time it seems to follow more than it does meet. An inevitable weight descends upon the sound.

The harmonica disappears, the second sound lowers itself and also disappears and the vocals return. Still considered. The dry landscape that had shifted only slightly around since the beginning now allows more air through. A sort of breeze picks up, adding a different view to the song. It still remains bleak and dry, though perhaps somewhere in there there now sits some sort of moment of hope.

As before the vocals remain not of the setting, though perhaps they are. They flicker in, remain careful and considered; precise, clear, announcing some sort of action now able to commence. Once done so they then disappear from the song.

Something resembling an organ now takes over and signifies a sort of closing. The landscape keeps the breeze, keeps the dryness and allows itself to become more clearly akin to string playing themselves out. Here the two elements dance a sorrowful dance, though the hope remains in there, somewhere. Then the song briefly draws out its close on one definitive moment.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 794: Still Tired; Still Rambling

I’m awake!

Okay, sot hat probably does not need an exclamation mark to conclude that sentence comprised of two and only two words, but sometimes it is nice to use punctuation for no real reason. That is what I am going with and that is what I am sticking with… for now.

So anyway, I am awake and it was raining but right now it is not raining and that is nice. It is nice for it to not be raining outside, though I imagine that soon enough there will be even more rain. More rain is also fine so long as my plants are weathering the weather. Worried about some, but not all of them.

Anyway, now that I’ve clarified that, I can take this wherever I want. Probably won’t go very far. Likely to just stick to my seat, but of course it’s all about seeing where it goes and not necessarily assuming, though perhaps there is some assumption in there. Maybe it’s more expectation than assumption. Don’t know yet. Might find out by the end of all of this.

Still tired though. Need to be less tired somehow. Need more sleep. More sleep is a good thing. Less sleep is not as good a thing. Some might consider such a thing to not be a good thing. Depends on how much sleep you are getting on a regular basis and how much that amount of sleep leaves you feeling tired, and all of that stuff.

I think that now that I’ve gotten that out of the way I should just admit that right now might not be the best time to write. Don’t have much pressure on me as work is not starting for a little while, but I’m sitting here and just wanting to rest and be lazy. Do nothing. That sort of stuff. Can’t do nothing as there are things that need to be done. Maybe I’ll just stop this soon and then go off and do something else. Maybe I’ll just say no to everything and go back to bed. Legs are sore and want to complain. Want to whinge about the sore legs even though it is something that I brought upon myself.

Plenty of things that I want to do and not really sure if I will end up doing them. They shall be cast aside soon enough, regardless of my decisions. There will soon be other things. So many possibilities and so many branches of which can be climbed and the climbing process is one of focus and some sort of pathway creation, so therefore there will be some branches ignored and some that won’t be ignored and there is only so high one can climb before the branches no longer are strong enough to support one’s weight as they make the move for the ascension. Things to consider and not enough time to consider them all, but sometimes that is just the way things go.

Well, time for other stuff.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:04:26

I don’t feel as though this benefited from me going as quickly as I could.

Apartments in Sunlight

A photo of The Sirius Building taken a few weeks ago.
Somewhat-similar to this photo.

I like that this image shows this part of The Sirius Building in a bright light. It highlights its age and sturdy design quite well, I think.

I also like that it brings out the geometry quite well. The Sirius Building was designed partly in a way to comply with zoning restrictions in The Rocks, which lends it an interesting shape.

Mostly I’m happy that a building with historical significance to Sydney is still standing, though it’s a shame that the tenants were kicked out and moved elsewhere. Also a shame that there are people who were fine with this happening due to some belief that as they weren’t paying as much rent as other people in the area, they shouldn’t have had the views the building provided, as supposedly social housing shouldn’t be allowed in some places.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 793: A Walk From Cowan Station

So today I walked from Cowan Station to Brooklyn, or more specifically The Hawkesbury River Railway Station. Thought it was only going to take two-and-a-half hours. Ended up taking roughly five hours, though only slightly less than four hours of that was walking. Had to rest a few times due to the tyranny of having to move uphill on some.. well, not the steepest of climbs, but steep climbs nonetheless.

This was meant to be a fun, easy walk. It was meant to be something of which could be considered… wait. Wasn’t expecting easy, but the understanding was that it was not a difficult walk. The uphills were difficult. Really took it right out of me. And so on. Not fun.

The flats were fun. But those uphills were horrible. Maybe I’m not as fit as I was hoping I would be. Probably not as fit as I was hoping I would be. However, yeah. Not fun. Still, with perseverance my walking buddy and I got through the tough bits. It took time, but once we were on the flats we made up for the lost time by moving much quicker, though at that stage the damage had already been done and so we still were a fair distance from finishing the walk when it became all flats.

To clarify, I mean mostly some sort of road trail. Not quite fire trail, but more of an access road in order to service some of the transmission towers in the area. I think they’re transmission towers, but they might just be power poles.

Anyway, it was a bit of a slog but we made good time once we hit the open trail as it was much easier on the legs and much easier to do the walk. We were doing really well and getting through at a steady pace and eventually we got near the end of the track. What faced us at the end was much worse than the steep climbs.

We had a steep incline of what may have been concrete road. It was “rippled”, or “corrugated”. Not sure which. It was steep and our knees did not enjoy the descent. Very rough.

Still, we did it. It took longer than we’d hoped, but we did it. Once off the track, we took a wrong turn and added probably an extra kilometre to the journey. Not fun.

Now, with all of that being said, I’m glad I did the walk. It was satisfying in many parts. It was also a good challenge. Probably would’ve been much easier if I was fitter than I currently am, but you win some, you lose some. Despite my griping… yeah. Happy I did the walk. However, I am also happy to never do the walk again.

Whilst I found certain parts enjoyable, it’s not a walk I feel I need to experience again. Oh well.

Anyway, that’s my tired bit of writing for today. Decent walk, but once was certainly more than enough.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:47:32

I think this may have been better had I waited until tomorrow to write about the track.

Oh well.

Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii Watches

Another shot of the eastern water dragon I recently shared in photo form.

I was trying to follow the lizard from a safe, yet close distance. Clearly my attempt to do so resulted in my being plainly obvious to the lizard; hence its looking at me when taking this photo.

I feel I should’ve used a different f-number when taking this photo, but I’m fine with how it turned out. think there’s a nice clarity in the lizard’s head. You can make out parts of it quite well. I also think I captured the colour of it quite nicely.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 792: More Poor Music Description

Light acoustic-sounding guitar rings out, creates a sort of jaunty, festive melody. Yet there is something melancholic in it. A certain kind of sanguine, a certain kind of determination, yet matched with sadness.

The band comes in and fill the sound with swirling, driving sound. Push forward, give the whole thing a greater sense of definition.

Vocals come in shortly thereafter. Some sort of roaring thoughtfulness, if that makes sense. Lyrics about leaving something behind due to shifting away from wanting to be part of something that is now seen as perhaps undesirable. Going on a journey. That kind of thing.

The chorus comes in and there is a sort of descending melody that carries a bit more weight within. More sort of stretching, but the whole song is rather expansive. The creation of sound on a vast wideness that perhaps resembles the idea of journey greater than it does resemble the idea of linearity, though a journey can often be linear in retrospect.

Rolling drums, noisy guitar, driving bass. The acoustic still is there and helps to keep everything establish and moving forward.

Eventually it drops out (as well as the synth in the background, but only by a bit) and the bass and percussion is revealed. A sense of strife, perhaps. The melody continues, much more naked. Vocals express the chance encounter that helps the protagonist keep going. Then the chorus returns, expressing perhaps a sense of confidence in one’s own decision whilst maintaining a sense of conviction in the journey, if that makes sense. The chorus elongates as the noise keeps on going. Whilst fuzzed it is not aggressive, but welcoming. Expansive. Perhaps it is meant to represent something spiritual in the aesthetic choices. Perhaps it is all meant to be about imagery. It is a certain kind of calm that seldom can be found. The sense of the sanguine, but also the sadness.

The synth continues in the background, giving the driving of the song a bit more power behind it, but again, it is not aggressive. There is no display of force here. It’s all rather calm and all the other things. Perhaps reflective of the present. No sense of nostalgia.

And so on it continues and the song expresses itself as the one thing, and it’s just wonderful. It’s saddening, but it’s wonderful. Celebratory. A beautiful expression of desire and conviction. Over the expanse it keeps on going and so on and so on and all points toward perhaps the unknown, but the joy of doing this and letting go of that which you find no longer tolerable and thus going on a pilgrimage in order to find something that might perhaps represent a higher ideal; the quest for the widening and learning of oneself.

And so it goes until a final note rings out and trails off, signalling the end of the song, letting the remainder of the journey remain more unknown than when it started, as is the way it should be.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:44:97

This took longer than the song, which was Killing Joke’s “Pilgrimage” from their album Democracy, which (as I understand it) is not one of their most well-received albums. I think in a few ways the album could’ve been much better, but it’s also one of my favourites of all of Killing Joke’s releases.

I don’t think this is necessarily decent writing. I struggled and that comes through. I think I was thinking too actively. However, I think it’s a good writing exercise as it helps refine and explore the act of talking about music.

At some point during the writing I thought that it might be a good idea to continue working on this way of describing music separate from the word challenges, so I’m probably going to do more but have the main constraint be the song’s length.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 791: Heavy Eyelids

Big stretch. Big stretch. Today is going to be complaining about the cold, so i need to do a big stretch so that I am ready. Has nothing to do with a sudden desire compelling me to stretch. Anyway, on to the complaining.

So I can feel that my eyelids are dragging me down and I need to lighten the load but no amount of blinking seems to be doing the job, which I guess is a problem. Maybe. Anyway, seeing as that is not working, I think that I need to go outside, but it’s cold and I don’t want to go outside as I don’t feel much like being cold, but it’s also cold inside so either way I’m going to be cold unless I rug up, but I don’t have any rugs so I guess what I’ll do is get an umbrella and use it to shield me from the rays of cold that will forever be beaming down from some mysterious place up on high. However, I do not have an umbrella that is big enough to cover my entirety, so I guess my feet are still going to get cold to some extent.

This is a bit of a problem, so maybe to solve the dilemma what I’ll do is go underground. I’ll somehow create an underground section to my place of residence, then go into said underground place of my residence and then start tunneling for a while. Might need to use my hands as I don’t have tunneling apparatus, but I’m sure that with enough work I’ll get somewhere that will lead me to a place where I can avoid the cold and so then I can continue on the journey of making my eyelids a little bit lighter so that they don’t feel so heavy and therefore I can go back to doing what I was ding before. Might be a long journey, but hey, sometimes the journey is long and sometimes it is short. What matters most is that it is a journey of some form of length that can be measured out, but only in retrospect and of course relative to the other journeys upon which I, or you, have undertaken. Small stuff, but important stuff.

So anyway, I think that now I’ve got all of this planned out, I really need to get to the doing of the things so I can get the things out of the way. Needs to be preparation work. Can’t just summon the underground. You need to have all of the things ready that will help get it into a position of existence. Then you can go from there and do other things. In this case it will be the tunneling using my hands and my hands only. Don’t know where I’ll end up, but hopefully I don’t hit water. Well, a large body of water, that is. Don’t want to undo my work, but more importantly, don’t want to get wet whilst tunneling.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:20:62

I think that I had the idea of starting off complaining about it being cold today, then veering off into something else entirely. I think. Clearly what happened is my futile attempt at complaining about the cold became the impetus for my talking about writing about tunneling to avoid the inconvenience of the cold so I could go somewhere where I could make my eyelids a little less heavy.

Interesting…

Maybe.

Arch Slice

Slightly odd photo, I think. Mostly due to the angle.

It has been a while since I last shared a photo of ANZAC Bridge. Took a few more photos of it a couple of weeks ago whilst I was walking through the city, but this is the only one that I feel turned out.

I think this photo implies a sense of elongation both in the arch and the suspension cables. I like that it does as it helps impose the sense of being under a towering structure.

I also like that the structure lacks context for its overall shape outside of what is visible here. Makes it feel more odd, I think.

I think this shot is most familiar to this one. Comparatively this one is much more compact.

Here are a few more shots of ANZAC Bridge.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 790: Describing Some Music Poorly

Grinding away on a sound that seems to hold the melody that I so desire to hear, but I’m not hearing it as much as I would like as it’s vying for attention against a relentless rainfall, but once the rain relents a little the sound is already over and now shifting gears toward something a bit more mean and angry. Noisy still and perhaps a little less interesting, or more interesting depending on how you want to look at it.

Wild solo plays out whilst the bass and drums groove away, locked into each other, holding the fort down as they say. This guitar can’t get too far away, but it knows that it wants to. Still needs to remain anchored to some extent, but it certainly is trying to get away in any way that it can.

Now the rain has stopped and once more the sound is audible, though of course it has shifted as has the shift to a new melody commenced. Perhaps this is something more mournful, though I can’t quite be sure. It seems perhaps more languid than mournful. Still a bit of noise, though the noise is coming more from the sound of the music than it is the sound of the instruments. Rattling percussion, a sudden splash of guitar and a rumbling bass exercise their way through a pattern of energised and compressing space. Still, nothing claustrophobic or suffocating. There remains external room for moving around whilst the thing hits and once more shifts into something sounding a little more melodious charges on in.

The vocals express some sort of intention, though remain thoroughly disconnected in sound, creating perhaps an analogue of the generalised feelings of how things were at the time this music was recorded. The rain outside threatens to come in and take over once more. Like two breaking waves, it quickly comes in, then pulls back from the shoreline in a sound rather reminiscent of some sort of static. It’s a quiet creeping, though rather present. Once more it has fallen away and the music has won the battle for attention at this stage. It was a fight that was rather short-lived.

And now once more another shift and now into something with a greater punch and enthusiasm, though the punch is quite gentle. Melodic risings followed by rhythm, rhythm and more rhythm. There’s a sort of galloping sense to what is going on, but once more the vocals sound disconnected and perhaps “over it”, though there certainly is a sense of passion hidden somewhere underneath the drawl of it all. Structures far more familiar here and there, and everything is pretty locked into each other. A tightly-flowing unit that drives on home and keeps on driving and pushes forward and keeps the whole thing together whilst effortlessly building on its own construction, though keeping it more low than high and instead building internally whilst pushing outward.

A little bit more to go and the band passionately rages on.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:28:81

I think that at the start I was going to write about the rain and somehow spin that off into something not related to music. I think. Instead I wrote about what I was listening to, though of course the rain still has a small featuring in the writing.

I think that as a writing exercise this is interesting as it provides practise for observational writing… or is that analytical writing? Is it either?

The flow’s alright.

The songs I attempted to describe are all from Dinosaur Jr. Specifically they were a part of “Sludgefeast”, some of “The Lung” and some amount of “Raisans”; all songs from You’re Living All Over Me.

Leaping Upward

Here is a photo of an Intellagama lesueurii lesueurii (eastern water dragon) leaping upward toward a higher vantage point.

This isn’t the sharpest of photos, but I do like that it captures the act of movement quite well.

I played around a bit whilst processing this shot. At the moment I’m happy with the result. Makes the photo feel a bit more dramatic, I think. Dramatic on a small scale.

This photo is available as a print here.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-twentieth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “What a Treat!“.

I’ve included this photo as it’s not often you get the opportunity to capture a lizard leaping.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

Tina is hosting this one. Patti is hosting next week’s.

I recommend checking out how people are interpreting the challenges. I also recommend joining in. It’s a growing, fun community.

I hope you enjoy.
