Five-Hundred Word Challenge 777: Rather be Led by Words

Well, it’s happening again. Sitting here, but with a great lack of sleep, but I’m not going to complain today. I’m just going to keep on going and see where all of this leads me. Not sure if it will lead anywhere, but it’s a hope that somewhere is where I’m led toward.

Will be better than being led by these flowing strings of which rise and fall within the music that just so happens to be what I am listening to. Steady beat underneath them and some sort of violence and all that other stuff that happens in the music that is the sound that is the music of which I happen to be listening to at this present moment.

Would rather not be led by those but instead the words that I am currently typing out. Don’t want to be led by any scents my nose might just pick up and become enticed with, as that may lead to some sort of distraction that I might just want to avoid at this present moment. Don’t want to be distracted by food; just want to focus on this and see where the words lead me.

Perhaps it will be something that I see that is not on the computer screen that will take me away from here the words are trying to take me. Maybe instead of where they will go, I will instead end up going elsewhere by seeing something far more curious in that particular point in time. Don’t know as tow here that will lead. Very difficult for me to tell as I have no idea what it is that will catch the sight of my eyes and thus cause some sort of fixation that will inevitably lead to me straying away from the path paved with letters that form words and sentences and paragraphs.

Maybe there is a chance that my hands will lead me away from where the words lead. Maybe instead of continuing the act of typing what they will do instead is removed themselves from the keyboard, plant themselves onto the desk and use that as some sort of signal for my body to lift itself out of the chair in which it currently finds itself situated, then allow for myself to be led away from the computer and to some other room. That could happen, but I would much rather not have that happen. I’d rather follow the words.

However, if it were one thing that would be leading me away that I could accept, then it would be the thing that I will make room for on just about any day. Sure, following the words is what I want to do most, but if this came into play, then I would have to allow it to take precedence, for I am rather tired due to a lack of sleep, so the prospect of sleeping is certainly something that I would allow to distract me from following the flow of words.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:29:34

Well, I don’t know what to make of this.

It was quite easy to type. I think a lot of this reads to (at the very least) an acceptable standard. Perhaps a little too much repetition.

Woodleys Shipyard

I’m going to get a better shot of this place at some point in the near future.

This is a decommissioned shipyard. Had a quick look and it seems as though this happened in 2012.

There’s a kind of humbleness to this scene that I like. It feels quite quiet.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 776: Something Inside

Currently in the process of pushing past the fatigue in order to get whatever this will be written. There is something stirring in me but I am yet to grasp as to what it is. It has no form, no shape, yet it is there and it is distinct. It needs to get out. No; it desires to get out. I am not the right conduit for its translation into words and I don’t know as to why I am the one who needs to do this, but whatever it is that is looking to get out and escape from me and thus enter the world at large has chosen me, or something. I don’t know; I’m making this all up as I go along and I need you to pretend that I am not.

So anyway, there is this thing inside of me and I sit down and I am sitting right now. Sitting is what I am doing and I am typing whilst trying tog et this thing out as it is in the word format of which I choose to use as the medium of expression in order to get the thing out, but I don’t know if it will or will not work. There is a crossroads but all choices look equally unclear, if that makes sense. I think it makes sense and I hope it makes sense. If it does not, then I don’t know what to do other than continue my work in solitude and hope that the end result allows me to walk free.

If I am forever chained to this desk until I am able to get the thing out, then I really don’t know as to what I’ll do. I guess I’ll just take some sort of solitude in the fact that something is certain in my encroaching future. At least I know that somehow this thing inside of me will make sure that I keep going until it is finally out and purged like a bad smell stuck in a carpet, or something. That would be nice. Then of course I will need to be able to get away from it. If I can’t get away from it, then perhaps there was no getting away in the first place. Would rather the getting away than keeping it close for the rest of my life. Would rather walk away from the whole thing.

However, if I cannot, then it simply is my fate to continue doing the thing until the thing is done. I don’t know if that means summoning more stuff from nothing. I don’t know what that means at all, to be honest. However, perhaps it is something that I need to do. Would rather not, but sometimes that is the way things go and as such it is only fair for me to keep going.

Well, I could do that. I could also just stop and not worry and get back to doing other things that I do.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:37:26

This… this started off with me aiming to write some sort of thing about being tired. Then it ended up some sort of fiction-type thing. Then it kind of went a bit flat.

Above, Below

Or at least most of them rather than the whole band… I think.

Taken when they were supporting Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin at The Bald Faced Stag last year. Somewhat-incidentally you can find a set of my photos from the gig at Culture Eater.

I like this shot due how it shows a few different things happening. I think in a way it captures the idea of band dynamic. I also like the space around Above, Below as it helps to draw focus on them by providing a sense of framing. However, I feel my not getting all of the bass in frame was a mistake. Oh well.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Mast

Specifically the mast of a vehicle commonly associated with masts.

I’m not sure as to what I was going for with this shot. I think perhaps I just really liked the shape and detail.

I feel as though this is a dry-feeling image due to the colour and light. I also like how the space keeps the focus on the mast.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 775: Pre-work Ramble

Being awake is awesome as I get to do all of these things that I want to do. At the same time I get to metaphorically tear my hair out as I get to be busy, even when I don’t want to be busy. I don’t know as to why I feel the need to mention this, but it now has been mentioned, so there you go.

I think that today is shaping up to be a productive day. Hopefully that means that I get to squeeze a little walk in somewhere along the line. If I get to, then that also means I get to go for a walk at some point during the day. That would be nice. It would be nice to go for a walk. Hopefully that walk happens before it rains, but if it happens during the rain, then at least the walk has the benefit of being dramatic as that means it is raining and rain symbolises some sort of drama and walking through it enhances the drama as then it becomes profoundly symbolic, or something.

Anyway, I’m not doing that right now. The commencement of being paid for being grumbled at is at hand and I don’t want to grumble about that either. I don’t know what I want to do right now, to be honest. Probably a problem but I’m sure I can sort it out somehow. Need to stick to the task at hand in order to do so, but I’ll probably digress at some point.

I also don’t know what the task at hand current is as I’ve gotten everything ready and right now this is just waiting time. Waiting time is good, but… something something and the conclusion is horses.

Anyway, there is a bit of light filtering through the clouds so whilst it is gloomy outside, it’s not met with doom and that is pleasant in a way. Means that there’s a bit more light filtering into this room. Had there not been a large house been built next door and there probably would be a lot more light filtering into this room, but sometimes that’s the way things go. Make do with what you have but keep on pushing for something better.

Anyway, I think I might try and take a nap within the next few minutes, though realistically if I do that then I’m probably going to wake up late and, to my shock and horror, have found that I would have slept through my shift rather than actually worked any of it, thus leading to a situation where I would not get paid as I was asleep rather than on the job. I don’t want to be ion that situation, so I guess instead I’ll just choose to stay awake.

Well, not long now. It all begins and over five hours of indeterminate power, I will do the thing that I do on some days; not all of them. Hopefully today it’s a relaxed shift.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:54:01

Wrote this earlier today. Not sure as to why I sat on it for so long.

Not great, not overly bad. Kind of in the middle.

CONSUMER: In Computers Review

This review was a struggle to finish.

Most of the editing came easily but when it came to writing the closing paragraphs I seemed to his a bit of a wall. I knew what I wanted to say but it wasn’t coming out clearly. I ended up going in a slightly different route which I feel was to the benefit of the review. Still, I think I could’ve done a better job of talking about the album overall.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Possibly as a statement of intent, CONSUMER’s In Computers begins with “Spiritual Death”; a song that heaves its way in, builds in dread and noise until it ends in feedback. Somewhere among the sound vocals express something rather menacing; at least, that’s how it sounds.

“Massive Subsidies” does things a little differently. It starts off glitchy and blippy; a few seconds in and the rhythm builds on the sounds and comes to the forefront. Elongated vocals follow suit. Instruments build, filling with some sort of grinding, coarse pressure. In a way the song is cold and somewhat-relentless, noisy and really harsh, but it also holds this rhythmic fug that’s easy to start moving too… until it drops into a quiet moment. Soft guitar; a repeating lyric of “Let’s fill up those containers” (though the first time it might be “Let’s fill up this container”). It quickly builds in both intensity and pace before returning to a somehow more aggressive, yet also celebratory refrain of the main riff.

Throbbing and droning noise commences “The Mills”. A sort-of pulse in the drums; a slow procession. A melody with a bit of a sense of either hopelessness or tense discomfort. Echoing, firm vocals doing something that’s barely audible due to how buried they are. Once the percussion fills out and provides more shape the song becomes this slow-burning, ominous, noisy and dramatic thing. Vocal harmonies in the background help to enhance atmosphere as CONSUMER keep filling the space and advancing forward.

There’s a brief quiet section before the song bursts out in a flourish of aggressive noise. A brief return to the quiet, then a return to the noise, almost like a call-and-response. Eventually the harshness takes over, creating some sort of fatalistic climax.

“In Computers” as a whole is a much more “ambient” track, with “Part I” is being the lengthiest and harshest section. It’s a slow-moving, pulsing track that gradually shifts and distorts, and often sounds like it will overflow. Toward the end a lot of that noise drops away, revealing something a little more peaceful.

“Part II” takes that peaceful sound and draws it out as something more “emotional” in a sense. Some discordance creeps in, though only for a brief moment; The relaxing sounds retain control. A small sound that feels percussive come in, rising as the ambience pulses and throbs, though this too is brief.

“Part III” is probably the most atmospheric and indirect of In Computers‘ tracks. As the prior part’s melody drops away, muted and restrained noise takes over. There’s a brief moment where it grows in distortion, but before long it drops out and the sound gradually shrinks.

In Computers is a tightly-structured record. The first half’s sound is quite full and harsh in a rather direct, kind of cacophonous way. The second half is much more ambient and calmer, though it holds moments of discomfort. The sounds lock into each other well and hold a sense of direction and clarity, even during the noisier parts.

Most times the vocals sit somewhere among the noise rather than on top of it. At a few points the delivery draws words out, or goes for something more flat in sound which helps emphasise tone and atmosphere. However, often the delivery sounds overly dramatic which becomes distracting in places. There’s a weight to the vocals which is fine; it’s appreciable, but they go a little too far. At the same time, it’s difficult to say if a different approach would add anything that the current one doesn’t. There’s an appreciable sense of absurdity that the vocals help provide; a different delivery probably wouldn’t provide that sense as effectively.

The title track and its three parts offer an interesting counterpoint to In Computers‘ first half, but they don’t feel as integrated as perhaps they should. It’s not for want of more aggression, sharpness or what-have-you, and to be honest the shift into something a little calmer is welcome, but they don’t quite make sense, so to speak. The ambience is appreciable and it’s nice to have the winding down, but it doesn’t gel with the first half and instead feels like a different album rather than an ambient shift from the first half.

CONSUMER know how to make atmosphere and texture work, whether it be through being abrasive or not. As such, despite a sense of disconnect between the halves, as well as some slight vocal issues, In Computers has a strong sense of identity. That said, the sense of disconnect prevents the album from feeling whole.

Still, In Computers is an interesting album with a strong sense of theme; that of which comes more forward more easily from the small amount of lyrics that are clear. The performances are effective and the album moves quickly whilst utilising its time well. It’s worth a go.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 774: The Door After Dismantling

And so it is done and all is said and all that is left is to remove the door and go on home with it. However, if there is no door, then there is no remnant and as such perhaps it would be better to leave it. Leave the whole thing unfinished, even though a door being left behind doesn’t mean it’s all unfinished. It just means that a door was left to stand there on its own, perhaps as some sort of symbolic gesture.

It could be that leaving the door behind is actually some sort of form of a reminder rather than something symbolic. It can stand there as a testament to the effort that went into the removal and the process in which the removal happened; one piece at a time, slowly, yet steadily.

Of course there were conversations all over the whole thing and how it should be done. There were plenty of people looking to prevent the task from happening, but in the end none of them were able to successfully halt what was going on and so unabated it proceeded. Even when it was all going on, the conversations followed suit, but try as they might, there was nothing that could be done. Still, their dogged refusal to give up was something worth acknowledging and showing some sort of respect, even if it was begrudgingly.

At least a little more was afforded to those who disagreed with how the dismantling was to proceed, for in the eyes of the dismantlers they were at least not trying to prevent the event from occurring. They were at least “on side”, and that was good enough. Still, they slowed the process down. Regardless of how well-meaning they were, that was still something considered an inconvenience and so only a little more acknowledgement went to them than those were were trying to stop the whole thing altogether.

The dismantling was something that proceeded rather quickly and systematically, but it didn’t feel as such. It seemed to slow time down and become this haphazard slog, sluggish and clumsy the whole way through. This too was a frustration, but at the very least the process only kept going with little to stand in its path.

More and more of the skeleton saw exposure until that too was to be torn down, pulled apart and taken elsewhere, never to see its original form again. That, like the rest, came down quickly, leaving nothing left other than exposed foundations and a door. Now the door stands apparent and there is indecision as to whether it should remain or also be taken. It is here where people are stamping their feet the most, unable to claim some sort of superiority in this ongoing argument, and so, after many hours they leave for rest at home is needed.

At least for a brief period of time the door remains as a symbolic reminder, casting a long shadow as the sun sinks beneath the horizon.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:56:63

So this isn’t quite about the titular door, although maybe it is. I’m not sure.

I feel as though this is rather together. Less repetition than usual and seems to get somewhere. At the very least it paints a (mostly) clear scene, I think.

Robert Vigna

Of Immolation whom I shot last year when they played at The Bald Faced Stag as part of Direct Underground Fest.

Robert Vigna had this way of smoothing that I’d describe as smoothly rigid as that’s the closest approximation I can give. It was wonderful to witness.

During this shot… I can’t quite remember what was happening, but I do know that there was a good deal of motion. It’s a shame that Robert Vigna’s head is out of focus, but it draws more attention to his guitar and his hands which (in this shot) I feel (other than the obvious) have an interesting relationship in terms of shape.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 68: Uninteresting

It’s a really slow day as today is a public holiday, but I don’t want to get too much int0o it and somehow curse the rest of my shift, thus causing me to have to take far too many calls, or something. this cruisiness has been good as it means that I can justify getting little done even less than usual, but of course I am still being lazy.

It’s hot outside, but I’m inside and it is getting hot inside, almost as though the temperature rises and falls, or something. I should probably leave the bedroom door open for a little while so it doesn’t get too hot in here. I hope it doesn’t get too hot. I don’t want to be hot right now. Much prefer the cold. Whinging,. hinging whinging and so on and so forth.

So I went into this thinking that I would have something interesting to throw at the wall, but apparently I do not. It is rather evident and so I must relegate myself to pretending that all of this is so interesting that your head will explode from being unable to comprehend all the interestingness of this interesting thing that I am writing. It is so interesting that even a balloon being attacked by a goat in space whilst surfing to other dimensions along some sort of arboreal plane could not be nearly as interesting. Seems rather dull in comparison, I must admit.

So anyway it is a slow day and all of this is so interesting that not even a fish knowing how to count all the way to eleven whilst knowing what it cannot know and thus knowing all that is nothing and anything that is all whilst doing something rather clever is nowhere near as being as interesting as whatever this bit of text that I am conjuring from the keyboard just so happens to be. That also seems rather dull and I have no idea as to why you would consider such a thing to be interesting. Clearly it shows that you do not know the interest of this interesting text that I am writing and therefore I am willing to express my great shame in your lack of understanding. It is rather unfortunate, unfortunately, but sometimes that is the way that these things go and therefore you must deal with it. I don’t need to deal with it; you do.

If you do deal with it, then perhaps once all of this is over you will be able to realise the error of your ways and once more you will be able to truly appreciate just how wondrous and toweringly towering this length of text in which I write in order to express things that you, the viewer will then absorb even though some of this is pointlessly impenetrable due to how convoluted and messy it is, but sometimes that is the way that these things are.

You see, that realisation would be quite interesting as it would mean you’ve realsied something interesting which means that due to interest being interesting it becomes even more interesting and thus you open the doorway to other interesting things as seen in this text. However, those things aren’t nearly as interesting as the thing that involves the reading of whatever this is at this point.

To be honest, I don’t even know as to what I’m going on about anymore, but we’re going to continue because we’ve come this far and I want to embrace sunk cost fallacy. I don’t know as to how much more writing I’ll be doing before the end of the day, so I need to make the most of ti now, so fulls team ahead, as they say, whoever they may be. Probably people not that interesting, unless they are not people, in which case they’re still probably not that i0nteresting. Nowhere near as interesting as this is, at any rate.

This is so interesting that I cannot even comprehend how interesting it is. I’ve gotten this far and it still boggles the mi0nd, even though my mind is unbobgglable. I might even have to bow down to my own writing in this i0nstace; that’s how interestingly interesting it is, and I just cannot deny it anymore.  I mean, how can I when it’s just so plainly obvious that there is nothing that I can do to prevent how interesting this is, as it seems to be growing regardless of how hard I try to stop it from doing so? There is nothing I can do and there is nothing you can do and all we can do is accept and marvel at the grandiosity of how interesting this is.

I just don’t even know if there is any point in even trying anymore. I don’t know what I’m going to do and how I will do whatever it is that I want to or not want to do. I just don’t know  anymore. I cannot deny this. I cannot deny that. I am done denying all that is and all that ever will be. I cannot prevent the fact that no matter my attempts and their efficiency, nothing I have done and will do in the future will be anywhere near as interesting as whatever this length of long text just so happens to be. Watching the buildings cry as they see the lint from a crestfallen star make its way down to the water’s subtleties will not find itself nearly within the same plane of interest as this writing. It just isn’t possible. I don’t know if anything else is possible.

I guess, with all of that being said I should try and wrap this up. Need to do it safely, somehow. Not sure how, but I’m sure that with enough words this will find its landing and once it does I shall walk away and find somewhere else to be so I can spend some time marveling at how interesting this isn’t.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 10:36:41

This was a fun, rambling mess to write.
