Shapednoise: Aesthesis Review

Here’s another attempt at applying some sort of ekphrasis to reviewing an album.
I feel as though I’m slowly moving toward something a bit more abstract in my review writing, but it is yet to be seen as to whether that is the case or not.

I’m mostly content with this review as I feel it does a good job of talking about the music without giving much away. However, this is mostly the draft unaltered. There are some things cleaned up and expanded upon, but little overall changed. I feel as though an attempt at heavily reworking the whole thing would’ve allowed for an easier reading flow.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Aesthesis commences with a sudden sharpness. Some sort of scraping and a disembodied, echoing voice creating the idea of a melody follows.  The sounds of words echo out in both a distinct and ambiguous way, almost as though they’re coming from somewhere other than their source. “Intriguing (In The End)” begins mostly as it ends; creating a strong sense of imagery and mood whilst withholding complete clarity.

An exhalation commences “Blaze”, then silence. Another exhale, then more silence. The sound of shimmering swarms around after the exhaling becomes a beat. Shifting sounds underneath scrape and rise up. Eventually a slow procession of steady, plodding and crushing percussion bass comes in, rising and dropping away, forcing itself through the other sounds. This too shifts when it is time and a crystallisation rises from it, following its lining as other sounds fall in and out.

“Elevation” takes on a more spacious approach; Initially singular sounds, then a scattering of percussion and twisted noises. The length of presence shifts rapidly and perhaps violently. There’s a sense of being in a giant wind tunnel, with occasional gales passing through. Rising sharpness finds its way in and holds a prominence, but chooses to lurk rather than take over the forefront.

From here Aesthesis moves toward something feeling less spacious accompanied by clicking percussion. It’s not long before this drops off to make room for stretching noise and precise bass. Then the beat returns proper and all sounds come together to create something disharmonious and rhythmic. Bass then falls over itself as the stretching noise repeatedly tries to surface. Some things decay and fall back whilst the bass and percussion becomes more rapid for a few seconds; then everything comes back. Higher sounds find a way in, then everything floods in and washes away as “Rayleigh Scattering” closes.

“The Foolishness of Human Endeavour” holds more low rumbling in the dark. Something akin to both strings and animal sounds call out, perhaps looking for something. Harsh sounds call back. Things distort and become aggressively pleading. Something begins to approach somewhere in the background. It is high and screeching. The communication between sounds continues, ignoring the screech. It all ends up stopping rather suddenly, as though a conversation has ended.

Precise, controlled ripples repeat themselves. A rising hum comes in to respond. The ripples drop out and the hum takes over. The ripples come back and the dialogue continues, though now met with what sounds like rapid hi-hats. “CRx Aureal” continues this as necessary whilst occasionally adding more sharpness, more mess and more noise. It shifts slowly whilst remaining quite static. A lot of sound drops out, leaving focus on the main conversation before the hum morphs into something else. It ends and a fading wavelet remains.

High-pitched squeals flutter about before “Blasting Super Melt” starts striking at them from underneath. A sudden halt and violent beats take the place of the strikes. Soon the strikes return with greater precision. The squeals disappear. The strikes increase in frequency before once more finding themselves removed. The beat continues on, unmarred by anything; sounds scatter and move around it, seemingly trying to rush toward something. Another shift. Some squeals survived, though they gradually dwindle. As the song approaches its end, some more sounds find themselves removed whilst others find space once more.

Perhaps intentional, “Unflinching” provides an idea of an aftermath. It’s open and desolate. Coiled throbbing sweeps through the emptiness. There is a pause, then the throbbing raises itself into something higher and perhaps more coiled. Short sounds try and find their way in, but are unable to grab a complete foothold; the throbbing continues unchallenged.

“Moby Dick” starts with something massive approaching slowly, yet steadily. It sounds clear, but remains a nebulous force. Mournful, tense, dry and bleak droning fills some of the available space. Brushed sounds come in places as percussion briefly shuffles. Once more a voice returns and once more there is a disconnect. For a moment most sounds relent. In this space more disparate noises from some other place try to sweep in. They repeat and find a bit more of themselves in the ongoing sound as it returns. Everything moves forward until the approaching mass stops. A low flood of static fills and washes much of it all away. Aesthesis ends.

Aesthesis sounds all sorts of abstract, harsh, haunting and thoughtful, but it retains a sense of straightforwardness; As such it feels like a series of sketches. The sounds and atmosphere are clear, but there’s plenty of wiggle room for what images come forward from the music. Whilst sometimes it oversteps, the album does well in holding attention and delivering a complete listening experience.

Rusted Frame

During my recent walk through Balls Head Reserve I planned on taking my friend from there to Milsons Point via the coastline. Unfortunately the path is now blocked off around Sawmiller’s Reserve (though I might be remembering the pathway incorrectly) so we finished our walk sooner than I’d anticipated.

Here’s part of the frame of what remains of an old boat as seen at Sawmiller’s Reserve, a reserve quite close to Balls Head Reserve.

I quite like the contrast between the water and the frame. The frame looks quite harsh due to experiencing weathering over a long period of time. It seems less inviting than the water. It also has a lot more detail in it due to lacking a general smoothness, unlike the water.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-seventeenth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “A Photo Walk“.

I’m submitting this photo as it was taken during a walk where I was taking a number of photos. If I hadn’t shared photos of Balls Head Reserve and its surrounds prior to this one, I imagine I would’ve included more here.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

Amy is hosting this challenge. Anne Leueen of Horse Addict is guest-hosting next week’s.

I recommend checking out how people are interpreting the challenges. I also recommend joining in. It’s a growing, fun community.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 67: Last Minute Rambling

I don’t know why I leave so many things to the last minute. It’s not a good habit to be involved with.  It would be better to not leave things to the last minute. I’m now rushing as I do not have too long before the commencement of work commences. Oh well. I’m sure that I can pull some sort of mess out from the middle of nowhere and have it planted onto whatever this thing will be, which is likely a mess of sorts. Perhaps it will be a tidy mess, but I imagine that instead of tidy it will be a messy mess. That’s the way it sometimes rolls uphill on here, and that’s what I am currently dealing out to the world. It all goes into the internet abyss and that’s kind of okay at this current moment. Could be much worse, of course. Could be much better.

Now I need to try and think on my feet, though I am sitting down sot hat does not help with the feet thinking. Maybe if I stand up that will get all the things flowing and thus this can truly become the mess that it is destined to become.

And now work has commenced and now I need to rush even more as I also need to dodge the calls of customers in order to get whatever this is going to become written out. I need to find a way to make more time, though there is no way and as such I need to make the most of what time is afforded to me in order to get all of this done. I don’t know what I’m doing and I don’t know as to how I am going to do it, but I’m sure that some how, in some manner I will find a way.

I need to throw proper sentence structure out the window. That needs to go as if I decide that it is a good thing to adhere to, then it might just throw everything else out the window. Now I don’t know what kind of mess I want, but a structured one just will not do as if I stick with the idea of structure, then the mess will get worse. It will slow everything down and it will get everywhere and then I will have a lot more to clean up. I’d much rather a lot less than a lot more. A lot more means more work. A lot less means I can leave it for longer and being able to leave it for longer means I don’t have to worry about it for longer. Sure, I could clean up the mess, but why would I do that? I have other things to do, and being responsible for my actions or lack thereof is quite far down on the list. It’s not that important. I need to do other things, responsibilities be damned.

So anyway, I need to also think of something to write but I don’t know what to think of in order to have a subject for writing, but then if I do think too much I’ll end up writing about the thinking that I am doing and I don’t want to write about that. I’d much rather write about fish, or something that is not fish. Something not fish related might be a good path to go down. However, I want to write about fish, but at this point I don’t know as to how I can incorporate them into this text.

You see, the first problem I have is that I only have liquid in my water bottle at hand. I am currently not immersed in liquid. The second problem is that I have no fish of which I can talk about and thus the idea suddenly loses traction and off I need to swim elsewhere into a slimy pulpit of decrepitude, where I might just have to confront myself and thus purge myself of all the failings and rottenness of which I so happen to readily wield like an armour as opposed to an armoire, thus causing other issues and a lot of hurt, but perhaps a realisation that I have grown as a person and can grow even further. I opened the door and only I am able to step through it, but I should step through it instead of hesitating. It is great to roll around in the muck, but it’s even greater to something something better person.

I guess that what I’m saying is that this is what I am saying and I need to ignore all that came before as this is the part where the writing truly begins. This is the part where the expected twist, or the expected poignancy must come in. I don’t know as to how I can welcome it into a place filled with stuff, but somehow I will get it crammed in here.

So you need to do the thing and better yourself, for no rain can wash away whatever it is that haunts you, despite how cathartic screaming in the rain can be, which often is cathartic and I would recommend doing it at some point in your life, though admittedly I have not done the act myself, but I can tell you that I much rather would like to at some point in my life as my understanding is that it can be quite cathartic and in that catharsis you get to obtain some sense of realisation about stuff, or something. In that realisation yo-u then get to have a sense of release and thus you get to walk forward. Of course I mean this in the metaphorical sense and not the literal sense, though there certainly will be forward walking, let me tell you.

Unless, of course, you decide to walk backwards, but of course you can still be going in the forward direction rather than the backward direction; whichever works at the time.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 11:26:21

Up until the last few sentences I was typing at a much faster pace. Slowed right down as I started actively thinking more than when I wrote everything else.

So, this is kind of a mess. It’s a flowing mess, but a mess nonetheless.

Percussive Focus

This is (as far as I’m aware) the drummer for Somnium Nox, a band I photographed last year whilst they were supporting Wolves in the Throne Room (the gallery is available here).

I really like this shot due to how still the drummer’s face is, whilst his hands and arms appear to be moving rapidly. It’s an interesting contrast, I think.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 773: The Shoes

Jaunty sounds carry the shoes to wherever they go.

Worn out, but steady and still going they were indeed the shoes of one who has walked more than they have not walked on any given day, depending on how you measure time against time, of course. However, that is a digression that I don’t feel like exploring right now, so instead we’re going to get back to the shoes.

So these shoes that apparently get carried along by jaunty sound (even though that was a poor attempt at creating some sort of fancy, whimsical literary device) have been places. They’ve seen things. They move along faithfully and well within a dedicated manner.

Sometimes they know not where they are to go, but sometimes they do. There is a bit of excitement in the unknowing, as well as apprehension; it all depends on the day and how they feel about doing the thing that they are going to inevitably do, which is walk to some place from another place.

All that walking is not always walking, but sometimes running instead. Occasionally there also is the act of jogging, which is neither walking nor running and instead an attempt to find a happy medium but truly a state of indecision, much to the consternation and suffering of all shoes around the place, unless they are shoes designed for jogging over running or walking, in which case, they are prepared to face unwarranted criticism. However, the shoes designed for jogging know that they’re helping with some sort of purpose that provides some sort of benefit, so they don’t care about what they have to face, or something. Perhaps sometimes they do as it’s not always easy to shrug off disparagement, but often they don’t.

Anyway, these shoes are quite experienced. They are old, but they are holding together quite well. They’ve served as footwear admirably and continue to do so. Sometimes they go up and sometimes they go down. sometimes they get to rest. Sometimes they become airborne, only to find themselves no longer airborne a few seconds later. They know what a surface is meant to feel like and they know how they are meant to react to the concept of impact created from motion from the expending of energy in order to manipulate limbs to create the moving forward in the direction of forward, though sometimes backward and to the side, depending on what is required at any given situation.

There are times when there is no motion whatsoever for a day, or a period of days. In these instances it is usually due to the shoes not being required for some particular reason. Perhaps it comes down to a preference for whatever situation brings up the desire of preference. It could be a number of reasons. It is here where the rest comes forward the most. Rest is fine; it serves the shoes well as they get to breathe a bit before they once more become wielded and commence travelling.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:35:47

This one… I like it as a form of writing exercise, but I feel it’s a little too patchy and unfocused.

Access Warning

This is part of the lower structure of a wharf of which I’ve photographed a few times.

I wonder if this is to be kept clear at all times due to it being dangerous to walk on any part of the wharf.

This shot doesn’t quite capture this part of the wharf as accurately as I’d like, but I think it does kind of add a sense of “pleasant dilapidation”, which I think mostly has to do with the water’s colour.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 772: Heavy Boots and Pants

After a day spent walking in heavy boots and pants when it was neither wet enough nor cold enough to warrant either, I’d like to believe that I am justified in claiming the throne of fatigue at this current moment. However, that is not what this bit of writing is about, even though I’d like to spend it complaining about how tired I am and how it is the most tiring tiredness ever experienced by anyone ever. Not going to do that today. Going to talk about the walk instead.

It was nice.

Alright, now onto the complaining.

On a serious note, I woke up, it was raining. Despite all evidence suggesting it would be better to do otherwise, I wore pants and boots instead of shorts and sneakers. It was not a good idea. The rain stopped very shortly after I left home. The temperature was a bit warm during the walk. It also was not wet enough to warrant the boots. The boots are heavy. The pants aren’t the most breathing of pants. Not a great combination.

Got through the walk pretty quickly. Saw some great views. All that stuff. The best part, however, was the doing the walk with a friend. The second-best part was seeing an Australian water dragon (specifically an eastern water dragon) at a particular point of the path and spending a good while following it and getting photos. It was a patient endeavour and I got a few shots of which I’m feeling optimistic.

Outside of those two things, the walk had some ups and had some downs. Going downhill was an up and going uphill was a down. Moving forward without having to worry too much about gradient was neither here nor there.

There was plenty of shade and plenty of sun. There was a good deal of humidity. Clear skies even though none of the skies were clear and there were plenty of clouds hanging in the scenery. Waters calm in appearance. A big bridge visible that connected North Sydney to Sydney City.

Even though Balls Head Reserve is kind of a pocket of isolated bushland, it still is bushland. Not only is it bushland, but it’s bushland that’s easy to visit. Of course there are concerns that it will become overly-visited. Part of the joy of being in bushland is not having to continually run into people, but at the same time the more that people visit the bush, the more they can come to an appreciation of it, even if it is a small pocket among a highly urbanised area. As much as I don’t want to see people in the bush every few minutes, I’d much rather that people come to appreciate it, even if bushwalking only allows a light level of experiencing the bush; it’s still a way to be among it and see all the wonder it provides.

Anyway, now that I’ve said that, I think I’m going to go back to resting and pointless complaining.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:50:48

I think I did a good job of lightly covering my having gone for a walk yesterday.

That’s all I have to say about this bit of writing, which probably says a lot about it, or something.

Smooth Waterfalls

Another photo of Uloola Falls (here are the previous ones I’ve shared).

I think this one has the benefit of “experience” behind it in that I feel it feels less flat than the other long exposure Uloola Falls shot I shared.

I like the way that light is captured in the water, as well as the sense of focus in where the water is falling. I also like how smooth the water seems. It almost comes off as being still.

I hope you enjoy.

More Tamaki Kunishi

Here’s another shot of Tamaki Kunishi (the previous one is here).

I feel as though this one carries a greater sense of focus on the performance than the prior image. I don’t think it comes as a detriment to the sense of energy coming forward.

I like how the shot captured the bass and most of Tamaki Kunishi with clarity. I think it works well with some of the blur on her hair as it helps keep motion in the image. However, I feel as though the image is a little flat.

By the by, the whole gallery (as well as a link to the review) of MONO’s performance is here.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 771: On Water

Do you know how good water is? Water is the best. Well, maybe just one of the best, but it certainly is the best. You can’t convince me otherwise.

So the thing with water is that often it appears to be in a state of motion, depending on where you look. In some places it is not holding the appearance of motion, but in many places it appears as though it is. Go look at the ocean. Go look at rivers. Go look at some waterfalls. All appear to be in motion. However, for the ocean, the molecules are not doing much moving outside of up and down. They let energy pass through them. That’s awesome.

But then you get to rivers and waterfalls and you see that often, even in the most violent of appearances, it all is moving and in a rather flowing and graceful manner. There is nothing about it that seems rough, rigid, or clumsy. It easily belies its own power, even when it seems much more dangerous than usual.

But that’s not all. You need water to survive. Part of what makes it one of the best things. In many cases it is easy to acquire and consume. Keeps you hydrated. Keeps you feeling refreshed. Helps to keep you alive. Sometimes there are acceptable substitutes to that glorious thing known as “Water”, but not all are an acceptable substitute. For some who replace water with other things, they do what they can. For others, they just seem to have a resolute refusal to understand and appreciate just how much water is the best (though that of course is a pretty complex issue that I won’t go into here) and thus they suffer the indignity of willing ignorance, preventing them from knowing the greatest consumable liquid of all time.

There are places where, for some reason or other, access to clean water is prevented. Whilst in some cases there is work being done to alleviate that, it seems in many that are affected, their requirement is ignored. Is is acceptable that they are denied one of life’s greatest pleasures?

All should be allowed access to potable water. It quenches thirst like no other out there. It certainly does take, but it provides far more than it does take. It allows us to function and keep on moving forward. At times it’ll allow us into its glorious body for harvesting, recreation, travel, and so on and so forth!

There are plenty of things out there that are good, but some things that are great. Water is good, but it’s also great. It does its own thing and we are powerless to its whimsy, and that’s a humbling thing to know. There are other humbling things to know, but knowing water’s awesome might is one of the most humbling of all the humbling things to know.

So remember, water is one of the best things of all time, and that’s quite awesome.

Oh yeah; some water is frozen.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 11:36:08

There was a part where I stopped and started thinking about what I was writing a little more than I had hoped I would.

This was intended to be rather silly the whole way through, but that’s not how it turned out. I’m fine with that.
