Hillside View

This is a place near Otford. I’ve been down to where these particular cabins are a few times. It’s a pleasant place.

I think this photo has a good sense of scale and space. I do like how the scene gives a good idea of the view from the cabins: a vast ocean with a few cargo ships making themselves apparent.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-third Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Surprise“.

I think that seeing the cabins might be surprising the first time you see them as when you see the landscape they appear to be built in an area not quite hospitable for their location. There also appears to be no way down.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is hosted by Leya. Next week’s host is Amy.

Come on in and join the challenges. They’re fun to interpret and there’s a nice community developing around them.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 704: Stopping at Options

Alright, so there they were, looking over the edge and trying to suss out as to whether the journey was worth it. Of course the journey is worth it sometimes, but this was a long drop and a slow climb down. It was going to take a lot of time and there were other ways around.

Those other ways around were significantly safer, but of course they were significantly longer to match. Whilst this was a long descent with a great deal of danger, it was also much faster. Could cut the trip down by days which meant less resource strain.

They looked over the edge whilst lying down. The lowest point, whilst visible, seemed rather small from the vantage point. They backed away until they were safe, got up and surveyed the elevated region in which they were currently located. It just didn’t seem to stop. It didn’t seem to descend. The turnoff to go to where they needed to go was somewhere out there, but it just didn’t exist when viewed from this particular location.

There were decisions that needed to be made, but they were not able to be thought about and deliberated over on an empty stomach, so they decided to consider the rest of the day one of rest and set up camp.

The afternoon was early when they began and it was about in the middle of its passing by the time they finished. Had they chosen to set up later, then they would have made good progress either way they went.

Soon the fire was going, water was boiling and food was being prepared. Soon after they were sitting there, eating and letting the walk of the morning fade away. What they were eating was nothing too special; it was just for sustenance. However, after pushing hard between their waking and their stopping, the food tasted like the greatest thing they could consume.

Bellies full, they were ready to discuss. At this point the sun was setting and shadows were extending their reach across the landscape, leading to the right time to be gathered around a fire to discuss the next steps.

The climb was doable; that much they knew. They lacked rope, but their packs were light and it was one that had been done before. However, it had been may a year since the climb was last conducted as once the path around was established it became the preferred method. Sure, it was an extra few days, but it was much safer.

There was a great deal of deliberation, but at the end of it all they came to no decision. There was no certainty. It would have to wait until the morning.

Morning came and, once waking up, they talked about their options. There still was no certainty and so it came to the flip of a coin, but there was none. They continued to deliberate until they decided to turn back and see if there were other ways around.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:48:67

This feels like a slice taken from a story.

Some parts lack clarity and there’s a bit of meandering with nothing happening. The writing is rather lacking, but I think I could develop it into something. Maybe one day.

Written at home.

Wobbling Light

I was playing around whilst holding the camera. Not a great photo by any measure but I do like how the scene looks.

Feels a bit wobbly and (at least to me) comes off as being about the path of the light more than anything else. Kind of an impression of an urban scene. Perhaps it could be referred to as experimental, but I don’t feel as though I was experimenting.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Draconic Thing Dream

Bear with me on this one. I had this dream a few weeks ago and held it in my mind. What I remember of it feels more like an impression of the dream, so I’m rather hazy.

Now that I think about it, when I write about my dreams I feel as though it often is more writing about an impression of them rather than their details as parts often become difficult to recall, but I digress.

I was in this layout where there were some others but they disappeared pretty quickly. The layout was in the shape of a corridor of sorts, but the top was missing. The walls were taller than the ground was wide. At the end there were stairs that led down to another hallway that was the same, followed by another set, followed by stairs that led to another area that had a bit more space.

We had to get to the area with a bit more space. There was this draconic thing flying around that we had to avoid (if you’re thinking it was a dragon, it wasn’t; it was similar in appearance to Breath of Fire III‘s Garr]). It looked as though it was coated in crude oil. It was able to shoot a continuous laser from above the hallways it could angle through them without issue.

So I went down and at some point the others disappeared. I got the whole way to the end and hid behind a block. The draconic thing landed on the other side and started looking for me. I moved to the other side to get away. Not sure what happened but there was a scuffle and I pinned it down.

I then said something about it needing to absorb me as it was the only way and something about fighting something. Then it absorbed me and then something else happened. It was then rising up in a beam of light. Maybe it was flying.

Then I woke up.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 703: Fish Slide

When you sit down for a long time, you inevitably end up sitting down for a long time. You’re not standing and there is a difference, but all this is is the board of spring in order to launch into other things as right now I am going to do the long string of gibberish and see where it takes me as that is what I feel like doing.

It is cold in here but I’m in here and thus I am experiencing the cold, but not outside where it is warm and there are birds and grass and the grass is nice but under the grass are things that I currently cannot see s I do not have the power to see under grass as my spacial orientation renders me above the grass and my senses render me unable to see through objects of which are the ones that I am unable to see through. This has a lot to do with their lack of clarity which vexes me to no end, though realistically I am not vexed. I am also not a fish but that has nothing to do with anything so I’ll let that one slide, though it needs to be in the ocean so it can swim, so it will need a long slide in order to slide to the ocean. The slide will also need a low amount of tracktion. It will need to be the smoothest thing ever so that the moment gained from the launching of the fish will allow it to move along the entirety of the slide and then off the slide and into the ocean.

If we do not give the fish enough moment then it will not make it the whole way. Actually, it could, but likely it will not and that is a real shame as when a fish is sliding to the ocean it is better to make it the whole way. Also, hopefully the fish prefers a saline environment as if it does not then there will be more issues and the idea is to avoid issues altogether, so if the issues cannot be avoided then there are problems.

What about the birds? Well, they can stay home for the day. Don’t want to deal with their complications whilst trying to return a fish to where it should be. The fish shouldn’t be on land. It is not terrestrial. It also is not an arboreal fish and as such it needs to go home. Unlike the fish, I am home. I am also cold but that is my thing to deal with. I don’t want to deal with the cold but I must as right now I am at work and working is a process that involves being in a cold room to do a job. Perhaps instead of that I’ll just hop onto the slide and let myself slide all the way to the ocean and say I’m going back to my home or something.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:46:84

So I was hoping for something all over the place and messy and instead it was sort of focused and messy.

Pleasant Weather

The same view as seen here.

A rather relaxed scene that shows part of the coast’s shape and gives a nice sense of scale.

I don’t have much to say about this one. Apart from the smoke, I find the image to be nice to look upon.

I hope you enjoy.

Cargo Ships Waiting

Not sure if they’re waiting to dock at Port Kembla or waiting to go somewhere else.

Maybe they’re just sitting there.

This is a pretty common sight near Otford. It is what it is.

I’m not sure why the photo turned out looking faded. Perhaps there were a lot of particulate matter in the air at the time.

I do like that whilst cargo ships are massive, the photo shows that they are tiny compared to the ocean.

I hope you enjoy.

Q & A with FERLA

I’ve spent a few hours editing a writer’s piece that’s going up on Culture Eater some time in the future and want to rest as it was mentally exhausting to read and edit, so instead here’s (probably) the last thing from Cool Try that I’ll share.

So this is the last interview (and if I remember correctly, the last thing) that went up on Cool Try. Also one of my better interviews at the time.

Other than one small edit, this is as it was.

Words in bold are mine.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going. We’re going to do a live broadcast of the podcast soon and are looking to add more things for supporters.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Recently I was given the opportunity to interview Giuliano Ferla of FERLA.
It was conducted via email, hence my questions being a little more thought out than usual.

Here’s the review.

You’ve recently released a new single by the name of “The Human Heart”.
What was the impetus to release a single that was not part of the recent Guilt Pop / Stay Posi double-EP, and does this imply that an album or EP is on the way?

FERLA: It sure does.

Beyond what the title implies, what is “The Human Heart” about?

FERLA: It’s a hook-up/break-up song. On the last EPs I wrote all these depressing breakup songs and they were all heavy and emotionally wrought. This song was me trying to look at a breakup through a more positive, self-accepting light. There’s no logic to love.

“The Human Heat” is a fairly light, airy composition. Was this an intentional decision made to offset the weight of the lyrics?

FERLA: Interesting, I wouldn’t describe the composition as light or airy, and I don’t think the lyrics are very weighty. I think the music and lyrics compliment each other well.

The video recorded for “The Human Heart” seems to be more performative in nature than it does seem to be about telling a narrative.
Was this thought of as a something that would better compliment the song?

FERLA: Yes.

In regards to your songwriting, do you sit down and compose them, or do you play around on instruments and work on ideas that come to the forefront? Furthermore to this, are songs worked on individually or as a group?

FERLA: It depends on the song. There’s no one way I have to write, it’s a whole bunch of different methods and I just go with whatever method works on the day. Same goes for the second question. I’ll have a whole bunch of songs on the go at one time and work on whichever one resonates on a particular day. Some of the songs end up being little ditties that never see the light of day, some will come out fully fleshed and ready to be rehearsed. Most fall in the middle and take a bit more work to finish.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of songwriting?

FERLA: At the moment it’s finding the time. Whenever I go away from writing for a while I start to worry that if I go back to it there’ll be no music left to write, which is ridiculous. But I start thinking that maybe I’ve lost it, maybe I’ve run out of things to say. And then starts negative self-talk and all that self-deprecating babble. But then as soon as I go back to writing there’s always heaps of music and it comes. Action is the antidote. There’s a line in a Kurt Vile song; “Making music is easy, watch me.” That’s become a mantra whenever I start to worry.

How well do you feel your songs translate in a live setting?

FERLA:They do great. I’ve got a band of babes who are great performers and players. I feel pretty lucky to have such talented people around me.

With the upcoming single launch, are there plans to have it lead to a tour?

FERLA: I’ll let you know.

What plans do you have for the near future?

FERLA: I’ll also let you know.

FERLA, thank you for your time. I hope it all goes well.

FERLA: Thanks, likewise.

Two Watercraft

Two watercraft with a large amount of distance between them.
Both similar and perhaps familiar, yet ultimately providing different services.

I took this photo mostly for the difference in the vehicles’ sizes, but I really like how strongly the sense of distance came through.

I also like how due to wave action parts of the ocean appear raised.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Group of Apartments

There are a few large buildings in this particular area, but these really stand out to me. I imagine in a few years these will be ubiquitous enough around Olympic Park so as to lack prominence, but right now they feel more like a sore thumb rather than a massive blight.

When it comes to shape and form I do think they’re interesting as they create a rough cutting into the sky.

I also like how in this instance it almost seems like peering through the trees. Almost.

I hope you enjoy.
