Moon Over Valley

A sunrise as seen whilst in The Blue Mountains and featuring the moon.

The sun was behind Fe and I. I think it may have been partially obscured. Not entirely sure.

Anyway, this is the sunrise that we saw and it was rather beautiful.

I like the blend of colours and how calm this shot feels.

I like that the shot also feels soft.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s photo challenge for this week.

The theme for this one is “Lights in the Sky”.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 586: Ramblings on a Sunday

The coffee starts the day. It is cold outside, I am inside and I am here, transmitting myself through waves of digital natures, and I sit and I work and I beat away.

You need to leave the office and look ahead and make sure that your goal is set so that you can continue on forward into the tomorrow. There is no point in living underground if you are going to only deprive yourself for something or something else.

Sometimes when we look ahead, we do not see what is in front of us. Too lost in though and it twists and contorts our ability to make clear, rational decision. However, we need  a balance of sorts. There needs to be those chaotic moments. Otherwise, you don’t get the whole picture of life. Not everything can be an easy cruise, but that’s not saying very much.

Sometimes you need to ride into the sun and make sure that you do not burn up. Sometimes you need to pierce right through it and on your cosmic journey into another entity known as another location, you will see things that you never knew could be seen. Then, once you have seen those things, you take them back to wherever it was that you had come from, and then you keep on going after you’ve shared the stories of visitation. That is how some things work. Not all things work that way, but some things definitely do. That is how it is, after all.

Sometimes you need to take a dive. Sometimes you need to plunge into a voluminous body and see what lies underneath. Sometimes you need to plant yourself firmly on the earth that is and know what was in order to be what may. There are so many things that need to be done and there is so little time, but so long as you make a steady pace, keep your head forward and walk, even in the times that are uncertain, you  are certain to experience some thing.

Well, even not doing anything is an experience, but there are better experiences. That said, a non-experience still being an experience is a valid experience that needs to be experienced. It is just one that you should not aim for all the time. There are other, more productive things to do with your time and doing nothing all the time doesn’t aid you very much (obviously this depends on the circumstances as not everyone can’t do nothing all the time, as there are some who  can only do that, but I digress).

The fact is that it is a large and small world out there and there are so many things that we can see and do on this journey in life that there is little point in limiting ourselves if we have the option to do other things, both for the betterment of ourselves and the people around us.

But that has nothing to do with work right now.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:41:62

This one is a bit more together than the last bit of writing that I did, but I know less of what to make of it.

Well, it’s a text at a certain length.

Written at work.

Cave In: Final Transmission Review

This review took longer to write than I thought it would.

I spent a fair bit of time thinking about how much Caleb Scofield’s passing affected how I was hearing the album and thus unfairly viewing it.

I’m note entirely sure if I did the album justice, but I tried.

This is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I are working on growing Culture Eater so we can have more things covered whilst taking the pressure of continually putting out content off of ourselves; Hence our going onto Patreon.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Final Transmission starts with its title track, which is entirely Caleb Scofield. With its gentle acoustic guitar and “Do do do do” vocals, it’s a sweet and playful album opener.

From there the songs move into a spacier sound. “Shake My Blood” flows from “All Illusion” exhibit this the most; however, it’s also quite prominent on “Lunar Day” and “Winter Window”. The other songs are a bit heavier and direct, but all fit with each other nicely.

Well, most are a bit heavier. Closer “Led to the Wolves” openly embraces the more metal / hardcore Cave In sounds. Combined with the low quality of the recording and it borders on noise rock. Although sound-wise it’s distant away from everything else, the song makes for a strong and punchy finish.

Another track that sits away of the rest is “Lunar Day”, though more for design than sound. Whilst still pretty direct and spacey, the song is significantly more experimental and ambient than the rest of the album. It makes heavy use of a static-like sound in conjunction with drones, and layered, slightly processed vocals to create a warm, melodic and emotional piece.

Aside from the title track, “Lunar Day” is Final Transmission‘s most moving piece of music. It’s not due to it sitting in the middle the album and bringing a sense of calm after the more aggressive “Night Crawler”, although that helps. It’s due to how effective it brings forth a sense of genuine sadness. Despite his playing on it not being obvious “Lunar Day” strongly evokes both Caleb and a sense of mourning. It hits hard whilst at the same time being gentler than most of the album.

As Final Transmission came from various demos, it sounds rough. That’s not to say that it’s muddy; although the fidelity decreases as the album progresses, there’s still a great deal of detail in the songs. It’s that, given Cave In chose to put out the last full recordings featuring Caleb’s playing rather than go into a studio to record the whole album, it has a raw sound.

This is also in part due the album’s emotive qualities. Despite mostly being ready to take to the studio before Caleb’s passing, Final Transmission carries a great deal of sadness. That said, there’s also a sense of the heartwarming. Hearing Caleb be an integral part of the album and play as hard as he does makes for a bittersweet listen.

I don’t know as to what else I can say about Final Transmission. It’s a flawed album; I don’t think that can be denied. Some of the tracks are stronger than others. Some are weaker as, whilst generally cohesive, the songwriting is uneven in a few places. However, Final Transmission is also a beautiful album. It contains some of Cave In’s best and most heartfelt work.

However, more importantly, it’s a touching tribute to a departed friend.

Final Transmission is available here.

The Jensens: Sexless Review

Unfortunately the source of the quote on this one is no longer available, as far as I’m aware. Maybe The Music sent the original article to an archive somewhere.

The quote’s probably available elsewhere.

From the get-go, my stance is quite clear.

Reading over this makes me want to edit its entirety.
However, I’m leaving it as is as this is how it was and this is how I was writing reviews a little over two years ago.

My colleague and I are working on growing Culture Eater so we can have more things covered whilst taking the pressure of continually putting out content off of ourselves. Hence our going onto Patreon.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Welcome to Sexless by The Jensens, where the sounds are of last year’s Summer, the Summer before that one, and the Summer before the Summer before last year’s Summer, except it’s now Autumn.

The basis of the music seems to be some sort of idea of late 60’s / early 70’s-era shimmery-sounding pop and surf rock drenched in more reverb than necessary. There’s a light, fun quality to a lot of what is heard and the music is played decently, with what each instrument needs to do for each song being quite clear.

The songs mostly sound fun and roll along at a good speed, not feeling like they’re longer or shorter than they are which is much to their benefit as they seem consciously designed to have people dancing to them.

The problem is that whilst the songs are written decently enough, due how The Jensens used sound they don’t offer anything that hasn’t already been offered by a good number of bands from the last few years. Some of the songs have a bit more of a spring than others and the songs are positioned with each other well enough and It sounds like they know what they want to pursue, but there’s nothing to suggest that they’re doing this type of pop better than anyone else.

In regards to the lyrics, to quote The Jensens: “It’s about wilfully denying yourself of something instinctual, as well as the magnetism of desire. An internal argument of wanting love, but having no more time you’re prepared to give. It’s about sex being both a vital shared experience and a temporary distraction of a life otherwise lived at existential breaking point. And how pursuing that experience, is to enter a world of sacrifice and convention. It’s about appreciating the fact that your mind has been trained to feed you the notion of significance, by way of the libido, but ultimately questioning the necessity of all of it.” (The Music, 2017)

This can be extended to the rest of Sexless. Lyrically a good chunk of what you hear seems to be about the dichotomy of sex and feels very much like what a teenager thinks an adult thinks makes mature lyrics. Passages such as “You said you thought it out, so what’s it all about / Don’t you know me better? / What’s the point in doing a girl like you?” from “Drowning” and “Darling / That you might hate me / Well, you made me feel so bad / ‘Cause every time you said the wrong thing I turned around and took you back” from “Everybody Talks” show that the band have worked on what is being sung, but they come off as cringe-worthy more than they do thought-provoking or exploratory.

On top of this, the delivery feels rather forced. Lines such as “Girl can’t you see / You belong to me” from “Bones” wouldn’t necessarily be notable. However, the way that particular line is sung (as well as the rest of the song) is done in an overly emotional and miserable-sounding manner that has it crosses over to sounding rather creepy and controlling.

Whilst avoiding the creepiness, most of the vocals follow the same process of being overly wrought with emotion. There are moments when the delivery works well and feels natural (despite the chorus of “Don’t Disagree”, the use of harmony is quite good), but otherwise they come close to sounding ingenuine.

Aside from the above issues, it feels very much like The Jensens were getting all their pain and angst over relationships out and instead of being humble about it, tried to make it out to be some sort of grandiose statement.

Sexless shows that The Jensens do have potential.
There’s nothing wrong with some fun pop music, which this release does contain. However, everything found here has been heard before far too many times in recent years to the point where it is difficult to discern them from other artists making the same kind of music. This combined with the lyrics does not make for a decent collection of songs..
Being their second release, one shouldn’t expect The Jensens to be pulling out the most amazing of songs.

With that being said, they certainly can do better than Sexless.

Logging Regrowth

Last week whilst in the Blue Mountains I came across this area of forest rejuvenation.

I’m guessing that this is a logging area, what with how the majority of the vegetation in this photo is roughly of equal height.

I like that this photo feels like it is showing an area that should be natural but has clearly felt the impact of industry.

The area seems barren. Clearly there’s vegetation there, but this doesn’t come off as an area containing life.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Wednesday” for this week.
Leanne recently resumed having a focused day for monochrome photography and is inviting people to participate.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Just Some Stuff on Writing

So yesterday I was going to get a bit more directly personal than I’ve been in a long time.

Yesterday was a day of being quite nonfunctional and I wanted to touch on the subject, but I didn’t as, well, I was quite nonfunctional.

At the moment it’s making me think about needing to do a lot and enjoying being busy, but also not being able to bring myself to write about my life in a direct, personal manner. It may have to do with a strong desire to not really touch on my life as much as I used to. Not entirely sure.

When I think back on how long I’ve been writing for, I think about the few years where I was doing very little writing-wise. I think about how certain events led to my writing once more and how, despite the slow and continuing crawl that is my working on producing something decent combined with my output, I still enjoy writing.

I think I enjoy it almost as much as I enjoy working on music.

Sometimes I feel like stopping, mostly due to how much time I spend on writing. Then I get back into it. It’s one of the few addictions I consider to be good to have.

There’s a lot of things that you can say about writing; that it can take a long time; that it’s frustrating; that it’s difficult. These might all be correct given certain contexts, but I think the important thing to recognise about writing is that it’s a powerful and flexible medium.

Maybe I’ll start moving Stupidity Hole toward being more personal. I’m not entirely sure. I do think there is a need for a bit of a change, but who knows what will happen down the track?

I’m still not feeling all that functional, but today is a better day than yesterday, so we’ll see what comes out.

Broken Object

Something seen whilst walking around a forest in The Blue Mountains.

I don’t know what this is, or why it was left behind.
All I know is that it was there and, depending on how you want to read into this, there is a lot of subtext.

I like the way the object’s shards contrast and clash with the natural ground coverage. I also like how much more bright and alien it feels in comparison to the earthier, more natural-appearing colours.

This is my submission into The Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme this week is “Unique“.

Not sure about the uniqueness of this image considering plenty of people love to treat nature as a dumping ground, but I think this image applies to the challenge.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This week is hosted by Amy and next week’s will be hosted by Tina.

Please check out the challenges and consider submitting and seeing how other people interpret them.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Washing Machine

A photo of a washing machine.

I took this whilst going through my storage unit a few months ago.

I thought the idea of getting a moody, kind of dramatic shot of a washing machine was kind of silly enough to be ludicrous.

Anyway, as you can see, there’s a lot of drama here.

The dim lighting and faded colours give the impression of an old, worn out machine.
Despite their attempts to engulf, the washing machine steps out of the shadows, showing that it still has use.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s photo challenge for this week.

The theme for this one is “Close Up”.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 585: Ramblings on a Monday

Something about standing, you get the idea.

I was going to write about other things, but that is a dead horse with the wings of a parrot and so you’ll need to ride the dolphin in order to get to where there isn’t, but always is, and so on and you know the rest, but at the end of this story is where I’ll see it all come together, or maybe not, for I don’t know which way I need to go in order to make sure that I can hit all of the points and reach some sort of general consensus that suggests that maybe we need to re-elect all of our officials, as maybe, just maybe they aren’t doing a good enough job. Besides which, they’re our employees; not the other way around.

Realistically, we need to express some form of disapproval at their actions if we do indeed feel that they are not up to standard, as they say.

I’m not suggesting radical action; I’m suggesting strongly-worded letters that express disappointment, but hope that they will indeed improve and do better for the country, rather than keep taking actions that seem to imply that they don’t actually care about us and would rather care about their own interests.

Well, that’s about as political as I feel like getting today, so instead let us move onto something else.

Let us move onto lettuce and how much it lets us do the eating of the lettuce.

lettuce lets us eat itself… an interesting thought experiment. However, that is not for today.

Today is the day in which I get to the home. It is a lot like other days, except instead of being like other days, it is almost exactly like other days. Do you follow? If you do, then you understand, I think. I think I understand, but maybe I do not. Maybe I am running a little too rampant and I need to rethink what it is that I am going on about, for maybe there are other things to consider, but then again I’d rather ride the rain up into the clouds and find a way that appeases everything, and yet reaches nothing. Surely there must be answers that lie beyond the silver lining of the grey sky. Surely there must be answers in which I look for other things and then come across the unexpected. After all, you only get the answers that are based on knowledge and experience when you deal with customer service. You aren’t given the answers you want to hear, unless they just so happen to align with the information at hand. In that case, you would get the answers that you want to hear.

Now that that is all out of the way, I need to make sure that I am braced well for the day ahead. It is going to be a long one and I feel like I need to engage in some small form of fancy cavalcade.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:20:08

Not sure what is going on with this one.
It is clear that there were things of which I wanted to touch upon.

Written at work.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 584: Somewhat-direct

Why does there have to be a loud, droning noise that has to cut in into the thing of which I am listening to in order to review so I can get the view to you, you know?

Wait, what?

Anyway, I’m here, not there, blah blah blah and so on and so forth and you get the idea. If I were to wrap this all in a neat little bow, with pretty packaging, would you know that I am not knowing as to what the hell I am going on about, but need to charge into hell anyway?

Maybe I’m trying to express something in metaphor, but am also trying to make it so obscure that the thing I am looking to criticise newer finds out. That is always possible, but then I’d go back to what I wrote and I’d never figure it out, so I guess I need to be as direct as possible.

This is as direct as I can be:

If there is a school of fish and somehow they have a leader, and then that leader starts doing things that detrimentally impact the fish behind it, at what point should the fish start questioning, rather than blindly following, and at what point should they break off to find a school better led by someone who has a better idea of understanding that the fish behind them are just as important as the one out front?

Yep. That’s about as direct as I can be.

Well, now that I’ve said that, time to fill this with more gibberish, I guess.

Then again, if all I am doing is writing gibberish, then I’m probably dribbling a whole load of nonsense that leads to nothing, unless you get something out of the words that I use and the order in which I use them, in which case I’m glad that you do.

Better than not getting anything out of something, although when you think about it, not getting something is still leading to getting something out of the something that you are not getting anything out of, if that makes sense.

I’m not sure if it does. That is something for you to discern. After all, what is a work of text if no one is there to read it?

Well, it still is a work of text. It just remains unread.

Well, I guess that all of this really says is that whilst the beat is bouncing around, we’re just gonna keep on ignoring it and try to go to our own flow; even when we are offered the chance of success on a plate, as it may not be the success that we want. Sometimes it’s a bit better to be unhappy than to be placid. Not all unhappiness is bad, just like not all happiness is good. It’s more that you’ve got to live as best as you can with what you have, even if that means changing your circumstances from time to time.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:24:73

So I thought I shared this yesterday after writing it, but apparently I did not.

Kind of okay.

Written at work.
