Bennelong Bridge

A bridge built for buses, bikes and pedestrians.
If I remember correctly, some people have attempted to drive over the bridge in their cars. It might have been just one person. Not sure.

Sometimes I enjoy being in areas like this on an overcast day as the clouds can make everything appear a little more striking.

I also like how the clouds can make things look unpleasant, so to speak.

I like how the scene appears to be quiet and how the different shades interact with each other.

I also like how this is detailed without being too cluttered.

I hope you enjoy.

From West Ryde Station to Tempe Station

I caught the train from Central to West Ryde.

Easy part of the cycle. Got me to where I wanted to begin and it got me there pretty quickly.

Once there I got off the train and began making my way south. There was little issue and it didn’t take too long to reach and cross John Whitton Bridge.

I followed the path and let it carry me to the bridge that runs from Rhodes to Wentworth Point.

From here I headed slightly west, then north until I reached another cycle path and then followed that west until I reached a point with two cargo cranes. I had a brief break here before resuming my cycle down south and further into the Olympic Park region.

Around there is where I got a little lost and had to do some backtracking at parts in order to continue on the route that I had set for myself.

Everything was still pretty easy. I was tiring a bit, but I was holding out better than I had anticipated.

There was plenty of green scenery and despite the pathways kind of clashing with nature, it was a pretty peaceful experience, as far as I’m concerned.

I slowly made my way through and eventually was able to leave the Olympic Park region. The path took me through mangrove areas, past a pond and around an oval.

Whilst heading further south I saw a road that looked rather familiar to me. It was one that I had crossed a number of times when I was much younger than I am now.
It made me think of how I lived (relatively) near that area at a few points in my life and brought back vague ideas of memories. It was not necessarily something that I wanted to think about as I’d done enough thinking about and living of those experiences.

It was not long before I was in Strathfield. I had the option of going past Strathfield Station but instead I went past Homebush Station as I thought it would make for an easier path to Cooks River.

I’ve cycled along Cooks River a number of times so I think that I know the path pretty well. Following it was how I wanted to finish my ride for the afternoon.

I crossed over Hombeush Station and on the other side, hopped on the bike once more and found that the rear tyre and tube had been punctured. Rather annoying. It was a good thing that I was carrying spare tubes.

I managed to get the tube changed and inflated in around twenty-five minutes. It’s the fastest I’ve changed and inflated a tube.

At this point I was considering catching the train back home. The valve of the new tube was one of which I was unfamiliar and I was questioning my ability to complete the ride before dark as the sun was setting at this point.

After I inflated the tube I decided to continue.

I went south down Homebush Road for a few minutes, headed west, then after a few minutes I headed south. The route took me to where The Cooks River path started and also past a place in which I used to live.

The sunset was somewhere behind me and it was nearing the end. I got a move on for a few minutes and tried to keep a fast pace.

I had to stop for a minute or so in order to rest my legs and I also wanted to see how much longer I had left before I would reach Tempe Station.

About nine kilometres. I believed that I could get that done in roughly thirty minutes.

I moved as quickly as I could, stopping occasionally for a quick rest and at one stage to put the lights onto my bike. It was getting cold but I was doing well for time and speed.

I felt as though in some parts I was gliding and in others I was dragging. I may have been pushing a little too hard, but I really wanted to reach the goal. It wasn’t long before it was dark which only exacerbated my desire to have the cycle completed.

I’m glad that I knew the path fairly well as it enabled me to go a bit faster than I normally would, or at least think that I was going a little faster than I normally would as it took around forty minutes for me to get from where I saw there was nine kilometres remaining to Tempe Station.

It was a good thing that I didn’t have to worry too much about people on the path as it was wide enough and there weren’t many people around.

I saw Tempe Station less than a hundred metres in front of me. It was night at this point. There were some people working around the base of the concourse and around one of the tracks.

I peddled up to the stairs leading to the concourse and saw that there was a tape across them.

Track work.

I called my partner and let her know that I was going to be back later and told her why. She let me know that she knew and that Wolli Creek Station was still open and I should go there as it wasn’t far away.

After a bit of grumbling to her I hopped back on my bike and cycled over to Wolli Creek Station.

The area around the station looked almost exactly like many other areas that I’ve seen before. Due to that, for a brief moment I found it slightly confusing to navigate. Still, it was not long before I reached the station.

I went down to the platform and took a photo of my bike once I found a place on the platform to stop. Someone came up to me and asked if I was a photographer, or something along those lines. I can’t remember the entirety of the conversation, but they were asking me if I wanted to come to this thing that was not a play. It might have been a seminar. I knew that it was being held in a theatre. Anyway, it was something to do with proper use of energy and communication. I think. It sounded interesting, but I was not something that I wanted to do so I declined. I declined multiple times. Someone in the person’s group was a marine scientist. We had a brief conversation. I remained curt. I was tired and I wanted to be left alone to my thoughts.

The train arrived and I wasn’t able to get on in time due to the need to put my camera away in my bag and need to walk bike onto train. The person who asked me to attend looked a little sad and waved goodbye as the train departed. There wasn’t much of a wait for the next train, thankfully.

I hopped on, got off at Green square and then cycled the rest of the way home.

The cycle to Wolli Creek took almost three hours in total. Getting to Tempe Station was meant to take roughly ninety minutes, but I imagine that it took longer due to stopping a few times, taking photos, going the wrong way and changing the rear tube. With that being said, the actual cycling time was around two hours so I think that I did alright regarding time.

Going through places I was familiar with was kind of saddening. Seeing a bunch of apartments go up where there were once houses (near Strathfield) made me think that, whilst the previous structures were not that good, the new ones only served to remove the character and history of the area. Despite appearing somewhat interesting, they were far too reminiscent of sterile homogeneity; the kind that far too people seem fond of in Sydney.

Few areas remain the same forever. Change is an inevitability. That doesn’t mean we should settle for the removal of history and culture in order to accommodate the development of a bunch of bland apartments.

Strathfield is going to become different to what I once knew, but it disappoints me that it, like Glebe, Redfern and a slew of other places will loose their character and what various things will bring to the area. Too many new buildings lack character. They bring nothing to an area other than their hideous blight. The Sirius Building has character. It might be ugly, but it’s a better building than most of the refuse nearby. It is genuinely interesting and served a purpose of genuine benefit.

The Wolli Creek area reminded me of other places that I’d seen. I don’t consider this to be a good thing. Everything appeared to be calculated which was fine, but it appeared sterile and lacked any real character. It was almost as though it was a facsimile of other places that have followed the same style of development; buildings that all look the same in an area that is meant to feel recreational but is distinctly artificial. It was redolent of the urban estate developments that feel like a maze to navigate around, but on a smaller scale.

It would be remiss for me to not mention that this is only a part of Wolli Creek and the rest could be different, but I was not impressed with what I saw.

With that out of the way, the cycle was good. I got to see some interesting things and it was something that I enjoyed.

Structures of Power

This was taken whilst close to Olympic Park.

I think that the overcast sky and the pushing of the black levels have made this appear like something a bit shadowy and menacing (in a way).

I think that the cables help to give a good sense of depth.

I like that you also get a good idea of the size of these structures without having a person in the photo.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 458: Nothing to Reach For

It’s all a cruise, this time of the hour.

Sometimes it is not a cruise and instead it is a drag, but at the moment it is a cruise and gliding my way to victory is what I hope to achieve.

Soon there will be an outside world that is my universe and through it I shall soar on two wheels down a hill and off onto something else that must be, for there is an end to be reached so long as I get there and verily so.

Perhaps there is nothing to reach for on the other side,  but always there will be at some stage, but perhaps not at this moment in time and so on.

I will glide my way to the station and off to another thing of which there shall be some sort of achievement in moving from point A to point B and in that stated order, as there must be for the order to work.

Now, where was I?

Somewhere using a phrase that I’ve used far too many times at this point, but it works (sometimes, but not really) so I shall stick with that phrase.

I shall not feel the wind in my hair, but I shall feel the steed of the iron element as it moves along and carries me to glorious times.

I shall see some things that I have seen before, but in a different context to the times I had previously seen them.

I shall make my way through suburbia and off onto something else entirely, which will be a different kinds of suburbia.

There will be blades of grass and people of the pathway.

There shall be an afternoon that shall be enjoyed in some context.

I shall think and make decisions that may or may not make sense.

I shall do the things that I shall set out to do in this afternoon that is mine to enjoy.

I shall also do some other things, such as go up a hill and then down a hill.

A world outside shall be my universe to explore within a limited quantity, but the most of it is what I shall make of it and at the end of the ride I shall head home and then rest in a way that suggests that I will be resting and verily so.

Perhaps there will be some things that I am yet to see in my short life, but who knows?

There is, after all, only one way to find out and that involves leaving this building as quickly as I can in order to get to that outside world and find something else that I can find that I would normally find…

I think that I’ve started to ramble a little more than I should be rambling.

Well, here we are at the end of the shift. Time to get outside. Time to see what lies out there.

Well, as soon as I finish this last sentence.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:17:35

I think that I really just wanted to leave work when I wrote this, which might explain why it turned out the way it turned out.

Written at work.

Building Development

Some buildings. Some already developed. Some being developed.

Once more the location is Wentworth Point.

The reflection appears to be a vague description, but no less real than the real thing.

Muted colours against a bright, cloudy sky.

I hope you enjoy.

Cliff with a View

Once more, another photo taken in the Royal National Park.

I think that I have a photo of the view from near the edge, but I like this photo more.

It gives a bit more of a view of the different kinds of natural landscape in the area and I don’t think that the texture of the rock is out of place with the texture of the vegetation.

I hope you enjoy.

Wild Card Review

Jason Statham plays a guy who has a gambling addiction. He also fights but only sometimes.

His gambling addiction is also only sometimes. Sometimes he’s recovering, sometimes he’s not.

He works as a mercenary-type chaperone, or something. People pay him money to do things. Then things happen.

The plot is a little weak and sometimes it jumps around for no reason. It is respectable that the film doesn’t reveal Jason Satham’s character’s backstory beyond a few lines of dialogue near the end and some minor implying. It’s not important to most of the story and thus is left out.

This is the part that probably stands the strongest out of the whole film, as well as a good portion of films out there. A lot of the time you don’t need to know about a character’s past but too often a focus on such a thing is included and praised. Too often such a thing is a waste of everyone’s time.

The climactic fight near the end (and just before, of course) allows for some sort of epiphany.

Stanley Tucci wears a wig.

The film is kind of an art-house film, but that may have been due to the state I was in when I saw the film.

The film is shot well and has an uneven tone.
The first scene goes for a long time and is tense, but the post-script to this scene is lighthearted.

Jason Statham is not entirely unbelievable, but he is also not entirely believable.

It could have been worse.

The film does plod along more than it should.

Some of the action is interesting, some of it is not. There being less focus on action and more focus on drama is a good thing as it does allow Jason Statham to do something a little different. It’s not a great performance from him but he does show potential to be more dynamic than he allows himself to be.

The other actors do a good job as a supporting cast. However, some of them are weaker than others. Some of them pile on the drama a little too hard, some of them don’t go hard enough.

Stanley Tucci does a good job of playing… Stanley Tucci? Playing Stanley Tucci playing a mafia boss?
He wears a wig.

Wild Card is uneven. It is okay, but uneven. Some parts flow really well and some parts drag on longer than they should. The scenes are shot pretty well, but sometimes the acting is flat.

Interesting to see Jason Statham move a little out of his comfort zone. Interesting to see the base flow of the film. Little else to make Wild Card worthwhile.

Wentworth Point

Here’s a photo that I took yesterday.

I decided to head out to Rhodes in the afternoon to wander around for a while.
Ended up walking to Olympic Park.

Anyway, I think that the overexposure helps to bring the focus to the buildings and the clouds close to them.

I also think that it kind of gives the image a bit of a… vague feel? I’m not entirely sure.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 457: Another Sleep-Related Polemic

Argh, it’s time to wake up.

However, I have been awake for a number of hours due to my body deciding that the time to wake up was far earlier than usual and now I’ve had COFFEE and I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m not going anywhere at the moment for I’m at my desk ready to work and there is a banana, gloves and a bottle of water on my desk.

This is a conundrum, yes it is and I don’t know as to what face or which direction I should be busing in order to punch on with the mythical beast that is pressure that I apply to myself for I am a warrior and if a warrior has nothing to fight, the are they still a warrior or are they a barbarian that a kingdom no longer has any use for?

It really is a difficult situation but I am sure that there are many away around the maze and through the woods to something else, so long as that something else has a pillow for which I can rest my weary head upon, but this is all something that is hopeful in the end as it doesn’t really matter, but it does matter, for a good sleep at a night leading to a good night’s sleep can be a good thing as you get to sleep and rest and do the other things in the morning as you feel much more recharged, as is the way of the things of the day.

Wait. Where was I?

Oh. I’m in Sydney.

I think that so long as I get to home at some stage this evening, then I should be able to get some rest but I need  to go to bed early and make sure that early is when I go to bed, lest I be carried away  to the porcelain throne and sit there for a few hours as I would not bee able to sleep and then make sure that I am doing something productive…

Wait.

I just need to get to sleep somehow and then not wake up early, so I need to put pressure upon myself to ensure that there is no pressure upon my being in order to have a restful sleep.

I think that this is the process that I need to follow, but if I do not follow it then I should at least wade through a thicket in a swamp in order to chase ducks around and hope that some sort of lazy lizard lasciviously leaves me living.

If it does not, then who is top know as to what would happen?

There could be a conundrum of sorts and I would not be able to combat the wombat , but then again a wombat is not something that I would like to combat.

Maybe I should just focus on what is in front of me and follow the path to some sort of sleeping very peacefully.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 04:58:19

Kind of okay.

I like the rambling.

Written at work.

Slight Lean

On the way home from work a few days ago I saw this and decided to take a picture, as evidenced by the picture which is being shared here.

I find myself wondering as to what is causing this to lean.

It could be due to a vehicular collision, or perhaps someone forcefully colliding with the object.

This is my entry into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.

If you are a photographer, then I recommend checking out Monochrome Madness and consider participating in the event. It’s been going for a few years now and it’s a fun way to be part of a small photography community.

I also recommend that you check out Leanne’s work outside of Monochrome Madness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
