Power Pole Among the Branches

I thought that I had posted this on Thursday, but it turns out that I hadn’t so here is this photo that I thought I posted but did not because somehow I managed to not do so even though I explicitly remember doing so, but sometimes these things happen.

I took this whilst on the way to Ewe’s place on Tuesday.

I liked the pattern and the contrast between the power pole and the branches of the tree, so I decided to take a photo, as you can see.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.
This M.M. had the theme of “Repetition”, as the first Thursday of each month has a theme.

I was thinking that it was Thursday next week, but I still managed to submit a photo that has repetition, which is mostly in the branches and the leaves.

I recommend that you check out what other people are submitting and perhaps consider submitting something yourself.
I also recommend checking out Leanne Cole’s other work.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 227: Things About Things

So I’m writing this when I have other things that I would very much like to writ about but don’t have the energy or enthusiasm to write about because, after handing in an essay four days late, I don’t feel very much like writing.

However, I still feel the need to write about something. so today I am writing about whatever comes into my mind, although that is not really different from the usual way of things here.

But then, the question is asked: Where is here, and why am I writing?

I am writing because I an and here is neither here, nor there, as is the way of the things that have their way in such matters, or something.

Sometimes there are things that having nothing to do with anything, and some things are no thing known to other things that know things unless the things that the things know are not known, in which no thing knows something and in fact they all know nothing.

There is a chance that the things that the things know of know nothing themselves, therefore knowing nothing about things that know nothing about anything to be known, therefore knowing nothing and not knowing a thing about the things that they should know, whilst knowing nothing about the things that they should not know something about.

Perhaps if there was anything to know, the things that think they know things about the things that know nothing about things that shouldn’t and things that should be known about, then the things may not think that they know anything about anything that they knew things about, for it seems that the more you know about things, the less things you think you know about as it would seem that the more you know about things, the more you realise that there are a grand amount of things to know about in the universe that could be well out of your reach, as knowledge may be power, but it also is humbling in that it reveals more and more things to be known along paths that you may choose to follow, as well as paths that you may not be able to follow.

Well, this is of course assuming that you don’t get a big head about yourself as you learn more things.

There are things that we will know and things that we will know. There are some things that will never be know, but there are things that may always be known except when they are not known, therefore preventing the progress of knowing unless the things that are not known decide to reveal themselves as some sort of connection to things that are known, or just as things themselves, therefore allowing us to know the things that were once not known and are now known as things that can be added to the collective knowledge base of knowing.

I think that, now that I know some more things today, I’ll do something.

So… yeah.

Written at work.

Barge in Rozelle Bay

Here’s a photo of a barge… in Rozelle Bay.

I’m not too sure if I was going for anything when I was processing this photo, but I do like how it turned out as it seems washed out and striking to me.

I like how the city is framed as well as the barge being as close as it is as it feels a little more real to me.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Tying Shoelace

Here’s a shot of my “Friend” Ewe that I took in order to help him promote his show Who is Mordechai Waterview? that was being held as part of Adelaide Fringe Festival.

I think that this is a good photo. It doesn’t have the best lighting, but it does have interesting form and shape.

It was fun to help with the promotion. We had a good time.

On a side note, Ewe may just be bringing it to Sydney Fringe Festival, which means there will be more promo shots, which means another night of fun photography.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Drifting Clouds over Sydney CBD

Two more long exposure shots.

In these shots, I like the drift and pattern of the clouds, as well as how they contrast with the stillness of the urban landscape sitting underneath.

I also like how the colours are soft and vibrant as it makes the area feel quieter and more low-key than it happens to be.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 226: Can’t get Good Coffee at UNSW

Today, for the first time in a very long time, I decided to go against all good  judgement and get a coffee at UNSW.

At UNSW, I got a coffee. It was a bad idea.

There are people here who have somehow been brainwashed into believing that there is a place at UNSW where you can get good coffee. at UNSW, there is no place that offers good coffee. It ranges from bile filth to tolerable mud water. Well, usually. Sometimes it is merely tolerable.

The coffee on offer is significantly overpriced for what you get. If I wanted to get overpriced bad coffee, I’d go to Starbucks or Gloria Jeans.

So I went to this place that supposedly does good coffee. I’d been there before, but it had been well over a year and it was the only place that I thought I could get something not overly bad from, but it turned out that I was wrong.

A coffee should not taste like bitter lukewarm milk. Sure, there are plenty of variances to coffee, but generally a good blend of flavour is a starting point for a good coffee, of which you work from there. You don’t just suddenly decide to make it some weird combination of bitterness and dairy. It doesn’t make for a good experience.

The problem is that with people thinking that something like this makes for good coffee is that it convinces other people to go. If they don’t have enough experience with coffee, they start convincing themselves that it makes for good coffee and in turn start trying to convince other people themselves. It is not healthy.

The last time I had coffees from this place, they were different. They were still merely tolerable. It’s almost as though they haven’t improved and merely gone sideways.

I’ve had coffee from a few different places on campus and not once has the coffee been good. It’s almost as though the people that run the coffee places here think that giving crappy quality coffee is okay because they have some sort of monopoly. It is not okay. If you’re going to charge crappy prices for crappy coffee, then please leave. A coffee should be well-made all the time. A barista should also be able to work quickly and make a good quality coffee at the same time. They shouldn’t take their sweet time and come out with something that tastes like it’s been run through a machine that has not been cleaned for a very long time, which I’m going to guess is part of the problem.

Coffee from a clean machine tastes good. It also comes across as though the person who made it actually cares about what coffee is and isn’t. Coffee from a dirty machine shows a lack of interest in actually being good at one’s job. It shows that someone who made the coffee doesn’t actually know what they’re doing, because making a good coffee is more than just mixing the ingredients.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:56:65

I hope to myself that the next coffee I get at UNSW is good.
I also hope to myself that the next time I get a coffee at UNSW, I don’t.

South

Here is a shot of the view of the area to the south of the apartment I was recently in whilst working on the group assignment.

I was there again over the recent weekend to do more assignment work.

Having all of my camera gear with me, I took a few long exposures, with the photo below being one of the results.

I like the angularity and rigidness of the buildings and how the contrast with the slight vegetation in the shot, as well as the smoothness of the clouds.

I don’t like that it’s made me realise that I need to put my camera in for cleaning again.

Still, I’m happy with the shot.

I hope you enjoy.

Shark Jumps onto Boat, Fisherman Handles it Well

Somewhere on some body of water that was part of the ocean, there was a 73-year-old man fishing. Whilst he was fishing, a shark jumped onto the boat, which is somewhat surprising.

It thrashed about a bit and the man ended up injured, although the injury was reported as not being anything major. He managed to get rescue and has survived. Not too sure if the shark did, as it was abandoned with the boat at that time. When people returned to the boat in order to retrieve it, unsurprisingly the shark was still there.

No word on if the shark survived (as far as I’m aware).

The man intends to return to fishing and, whilst surprised, called it “just a mundane thing that just happened”.

Now this article should not be news at all. It is unusual, but it’s not really newsworthy. What is newsworthy is how the person responded.

They expressed surprise and then said something that can be summed up as “it happens”.
It’s sad that this part is what is newsworthy because this is the attitude that should always be held when people have encounters with sharks.

Too many people seem to express surprise when they encounter a shark about the fact that there was a shark in the ocean, almost revealing a ridiculous amount of ignorance.

This person, in a few words has shown that they understand that, whilst this encounter was unusual, it’s not something to get into a massive fuss over as they understood that they were on the ocean and when you’re on the ocean, encountering a creature, especially a predator is something that can happen. They’ve shown that they understand that it’s not their domain, so if something happens they’re not going to be terrified for no reason.

Too often it is that people go into the water and then express complete and utter fear of something that actually lives there. They express far too much lack of understanding that when you go into the ocean, there is a risk of something going awry.

Sadly this ends up leading to things such as shark culling, because people don’t understand that life of the ocean is important to the life of the ocean and that killing off creatures because a bunch of people can’t pull their heads out of their ass and think about the consequences of their actions, as well as all those that they’re enabling and see them as being a bad thing.

Sorry. I’ve gone off on a slight tangent.

The fact is that this person expressed an admirable attitude to what they experienced. It is one that most people should think about adopting when an encounter with a shark (or other dangerous creature) occurs and they survive.

You step into the ocean and you put yourself at risk, regardless of how safe you feel. This is a fact of life. If something happens, learn, don’t spread fear and get on with your life.

There are far worse things that happen every single day, but you don’t see people trying to  cull those who drive cars.

Artificial Waterway

This is an artificial waterway in Sydney Park.

There’s something that is almost artistic about it that I can’t quite put my finger on.

I do like that the focus is mostly on the waterway, with everything else being more and more out of focus as it makes the area feel much larger than it actually is.

I also like that this feels like a really open shot.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 225: Assignments Due Today

The last day of any assignments due is today.

That means, of course, that I have two assignments due today.

The pain and so on.

I know that right now I am sitting at home, waiting for my washing to finish before I blast of in an amazing light show in order to make my way to university.

It will be one of those days where I cycle hard, although I will be taking a highly indirect route to get there because I can and no one can stop me, except for everyone who can stop me.

I don’t know what that means, although it probably makes more sense than I realise.

ANYWAY!

So I am sitting here, I’ve had one coffee and I am warming up in order to bang out a lot of words in order to compose an essay that needs to be handed in and, luckily enough, I know what it is that I want to write so I will be able to get through it a fair bit quicker than I would with other things.

The one assignment is for science and that features a lot less writing than the first one mentioned in this post. It will be a little slow to get finished, but at the same time most of it is working on layout. There’s maybe a total of a thousand words that need to be written for it, so thankfully I will be able to get through that quite quickly, I hope.

I’m working with my group once more, but we are doing our own individual things. The great thing about the science assignment is that we can all have the same results, so long as we write about the results ourselves. It takes a lot fo the pressure off.

The other assignment is mostly writing. Writing, writing, writing. Again, I am thankful as, due to my continual quest in writing as much as possible with as little quality as possible, I’ve managed to churn out a rough draft over a period of about thirty minutes and need to add more in a moment before I start bringing in the references and research and make it as good as I possibly can, which to be fair, probably isn’t that good, but should be sufficient enough to make sure that I get the points I am trying to argue across really well, which then hopefully transfers into good marks.

If not, then I don’t know what to do, other than keep on working, keep on writing, and keep on doing the things that I do when I do the things that I do when I am not working on university work, such as… things… and stuff.

Soon I shall be writing once more to get all of this done. Then I shall be off to university to hand it all in so I can rest for a day or so before the almighty cram begins.

Well, time to head off to success.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:17:05

Pretty happy with the time.

Time for stuff.

Written at home.
