Five-Hundred Word Challenge 192: Remembering a Gig, then Some Pointless Talk About Cannibalism

This morning, within ten minutes of waking up I went straight to a café close to me to get coffee and a croissant. The croissants had not yet arrived, leaving me in a position to wait until they were, which meant coming back home to work on things before heading back out once more.

That is far too much walking and turning around than what is considered sensible for any given hour of the year, let me tell you!

Before that, I threw on a shirt that I hadn’t worn in a long time. It’s a Devo shirt from their tour of Australia in 2008. I’m note sure as to why it’s been a long time since I last wore it as it’s still in a decent condition. I briefly thought about the show whilst looking at the shirt. I can still remember it quite well.

Devo were performing at The Hordern Pavilion. The crowd was a decent size. Regurgitator were supporting. I didn’t get to see much of their performance, unfortunately.

When Devo came on, they played really hard and really well. The Hordern Pavilion has a fair bit of space in it, but it didn’t seem to affect Devo’s sound.  It was a really fun, enjoyable show. The crowd was enjoying it quite a fair bit. It was a really good show and one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

Right now I’m sitting in front of the compute typing this out whilst biding my time before I head back to the café to get coffee and a croissant, which will hopefully be there by the time I arrive once more.

I could be studying, which is what I’ll begin very shortly. However, until then I continue to wait like a predator keeping a low profile until it is the right time to strike, except that I’m not a predator and I won’t be taking down someone before eating them as I’m not into cannibalism.

I think it’s safe to say that I don’t know anyone who is into cannibalism.

I’m sure that if I did, then something would happen at some indeterminate point in the future, involving objects or people and actions or feelings.

I don’t know what knowing or not knowing a cannibal has to do with right now, so instead I’m going to move on from that topic as it’s a rather silly one to get caught on, and one that has no merit in being discussed in this very brief space as I’m sure that there’s plenty of nuances to cannibalism that I don’t know and don’t care to discover and I’d rather keep it that way right now.

I’d rather keep it that way for the rest of my life, I think.

With that being said, cannibalism is probably an interesting subject to research but not become involved with as you might get into a little bit of trouble if you start doing it, so make sure that you don’t, or else

A Dirt Road in the Bush

This was taken on the way back to where I was staying for the field trip after taking photos on the first morning.

I wanted to get a good shot of the track as I like how it looked.

I found processing this photo to be rather difficult due to how finicky striking a balance between the light and colour contrast was.

In the end, this was the best result.

I think you get a real sense of how dense the vegetation is, as well as what the area was like in certain parts.

I hope you enjoy.

A Driver Nearly Took me out Today, so Here’s a Short Tangent

So today is going to be another post about cycling because I had a dearth of desire to write.

Actually, it would be more accurate to say that whilst I had a desire to write, I didn’t feel as though I had anything to write about and didn’t feel like going on another stream-of-consciousness tangent.

However, with that being said, one driver was able to give me all the inspiration that I needed, so to that driver, I say thank you for almost causing an accident.

I was cycling along to work, as one does when they are on a bike and desperately trying to stay on a tight budget, when I had to change lanes to continue my commute at a decent pace. I looked behind me to see if there was enough space and, lo and behold, there was for a very brief time.

The driver that I would have merged in front of decided that the best thing to do would be to speed up whilst I was indicating my intention to merge.

Whilst merging they drove right past me, preventing me from completing my merging unless I decided to change my mind and merge with the side of their car.

From there, they decided that it’s better to follow the law rather than do things that could be considered illegal and followed the speed of the rest of the traffic.

It’s not hard to see why I don’t look at this behaviour with any sort of approval.

Admittedly I could have signaled for longer, but it would have been quite difficult to miss that I had signaled and started merging.

I like cycling quite a lot. Anyone who has tolerated me for a while will know that.
They’ll also know that what absolutely pisses me off is the attitude that some drivers take toward cyclists, especially drivers in Sydney.

To be fair, there’s a number of cyclists in Sydney that have a mediocre attitude and do things such as go on the road and then go at their own pace. It’s not good.

I don’t think that that justifies sub-par behaviour toward cyclists, as well as bad driving practices in general.

The roads are shared and people need to accept that. You don’t get to rule the roads and do whatever you want just because you’re using a vehicle with two or four wheels. You don’t get to risk harm to others just because you think they’re a nuisance or not worthy of your consideration.

Consider what your actions are doing. You’re giving your class of commuter a bad name by behaving the way you do. Stop it.

Two Swans Again

Another shot of the same two swans that I saw at Smiths Lake.

I like this shot due to the ambiguous shape of the swans, as well as the light trail.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 191: It’s Getting Cold Again

Well, it’s getting cold again, as it does when winter gradually encroaches upon the southern hemisphere.

It’s a time for blankets, blankets, gloves, blankets, coats, and really bad typing because my hands seem to enjoy the cold as much as I enjoy falling down a mountain with my pants around my ankles.

Whilst my hands seem to want to disagree with me, I think the cold is fantastic. You get to rug up, you get to fight bears, you get to imagine the difficulty when it comes to fighting bears, you get to realise that the bears that you are imagining that you want to fight aren’t found in the Australian wilderness, and everyone around you seems to look like they’re almost constantly pissed off as somehow having to wear a few more clothes has somehow offended them.

Yes, it is a most magical time of year. The encroachment of the colder season is one to look forward to and no one can escape it’s icy cold grip upon the hearts of us all, as we shall suffer in reverent worship of the freezing chill that shall make or break us all.

Now, where was I?

So anyway, its cold, I’m tired and all I want to do is go back to bed, but I cannot for there is much to be done over the next few hours and if I don’t do what I need to do then I’m going to be in a position where I won’t get enough uni work done and that’s not a position that I want to find myself in at the moment.

I think I’ve done a bit too much procrastination which has put me in a position of being quite far behind, so catching up is now a a greater priority than I had ever wished for it to be, but that is the way of thing when you’re being lazier (far lazier, it could be said) than you should.

In fact, you could say that I’m being lazy by writing this instead of actually knuckling down, but that would be heresy and heresy is something that I so dearly want to avoid right now.

It would also be true.

Truth be told, I’m not sure as to how I feel about university right now. I’m still pushing on because I want to complete it, but I’m mostly just pushing on for the sake of getting to the subjects that I want to be doing and it’s kind of dragging me down. With that being said, I realise that it’s entirely my own fault for being lazy instead of actually knuckling down. I know I can do well, but I don’t want to do anything at all.

Oh well. Time to shut up and get back into getting what needs to be done done, or else I’m going to end up with grades that I don’t want, therefore causing me to take far longer to graduate than I want, which would suck.

A Patch of Sky Among the Clouds

Here’s another photo taken at Smiths Lake in the morning.

I like the contrast between the clouds and the clear sky. It looks as though that the clouds are being pushed back.

Maybe the sky is being swallowed.

I also like how the reflection was captured. It almost lines up with the water  among the low vegetation.

I hope you enjoy.

Hope to Escape

Whilst nearing the end of my shift yesterday I wrote the below.
I wasn’t satisfied with how it turned out so I’m leaving it incomplete.
However, I did write it with the intention of posting it, so here you go.

I hope you enjoy.

—–

There was still time, as there always is, to get the things done that needed to be done, he thought to himself.

Looking beyond the walls that he thought he could see through, he envisioned a verdant rolling green beyond anything he had seen before. The land around him was withered and dry and in a dire need of great refreshment. It was one that he could not provide and was painfully aware of the fact.

The four walls that surrounded him was, other than the immediate area, all that he knew in his life at this given point in time. He had read and been told about places where there was a thing known as a “sea breeze” and sand was something that was not to be dreaded. He had learned about hills as far as the eye could see where the land was fertile and animals were not scarce. In his dreams he imagined the sprawling metropolises that he had heard mentioned time and time again. These were things that he wanted to see and know more about, but it was growing increasingly unlikely that he ever would, for time was short and the land around him seemed only to be dying.

The world was far bigger than he knew and far bigger than he had realised. It was a hope for him to discover the large size of it, but until he was given the freedom from his four walls, it was something that he could never begin attempting.

Even when he was a younger man than he was now, he had hoped for a day when he would be given the opportunity to escape and explore something that he felt he should know but was always denied the chance. Even as a child, when he first heard about a world beyond what could be seen he had imagined that he would be able to see all that was. It was always growing less and less likely, but he still held on. Despite how decrepit the land had become, he still held on to what he could. Perhaps he would never see beyond the immediate view, but hope kept him going and he knew that eventually he would be allowed some sort of give to take advantage of and finally escape to explore.

Until then, all he could do is keep working himself down every day and continue to bide his time.

Cloudy Sky Over Smiths Lake

Here’s a shot of the clouds I saw above Smiths Lake whilst on the field trip.

I think that there’s a nice pattern to them.
I also think that the area looks quite calm in this photo.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 190: Rain Story

Twisted and turning, the worm burrowed its way deep into the moist earth that is so was instinctively required to do. However, eventually due to how much moisture was being collected due to the heavy rain above the worm instinctively worked its way up to the surface, perhaps to escape drowning, where it turned into an easy meal for a bird that happened to be nearby.

Once the bird had the worm, it flew off to reach shelter before the rain became too heavy for it to go anywhere. There were plenty of trees, yet shelter was scarce and the trees at which it would usually roost already seemed to be occupied. Still, it continued on until it found an awning under which it could rest.

The rain was much heavier than usual on that particular day. There had been many days of rain which meant many plants didn’t need to be watered by hand, but it was getting to a point where it was becoming oppressive. Many people had hoped that, despite the increase in how much rain was falling, that this would be the end of it and they would be allowed at the least a few days of respite from the continual downpour.

Raincoats and driving could only get them so far as, despite the freedom that driving and wearing a raincoat could allow during the rain, it could only allow so much as actions outside of these were still limited and a raincoat could only offer limited protection when the rain became heavier. As the rain turned into a torrential storm, driving around became much riskier and significantly more limited. Indeed, it would seem that the only option for most people was to wait as the streets around them became pregnant with the water flowing through.

Buses stalled trying to go through the water as it rose higher in certain spots. For a while it had seemed that it would not stop. However, as is the nature of the weather, eventually the rain did stop.

After a few hours, the roads cleared and they were able to be driven on once more. Some property was flooded, but there was nothing that could be classified as damage that could not be easily fixed and no one suffered from any injury, other than to their patience.

It looked as though everything would be okay, and for the time being it was, despite the heavy clouds that were hanging above. Of course more rain would eventually fall, as it is the way of the weather, but despite that, everything was fine. People were relaxing and the streets seemed a little less chaotic than usual, despite suddenly becoming flooded with traffic just like it was almost all of the time.

It became a most glorious day that people enjoyed thoroughly. In the end, everyone was okay and the only thing that seemed to have suffered anything that could be seen as saddening was a worm that came up for air.

I tried to go in and see what happened (as I usually do) and came up with this.

Overgrowth at the Asbestos House

The field trip I was on was being held near this property as a good portion of the area used to be farmland.

My team and I had to walk past this place twice. I took a photo the first time we were passing by.

The house was quite dilapidated in appearance and had a sign stating the danger.

The overgrowth of the vegetation was quite “Dense” around both it and the rest of the area.

It was nice to see how nature was gradually taking over the house.

This is my entry into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.
