Five-Hundred Word Challenge 140: Needing Shelter

Into the sky and a little beyond the field of vision, all there was seemed to be some sort of endless light blue with the occasional scattering of clouds moving along as though they were on a conveyor belt, all in one direction and all at the same speed, until it seemed as though they needed to change direction for whatever reason would require them to do so.

Beneath them stretched many hills and fields filled with various flora and fauna going about their business as though anything beyond their reach was not a necessary concern they needed to think about at that particular time as there were other things to worry about, such as what was going to be a meal and what was going to remain untouched.

Along the land ran a great body of water that was as chaotic as it was controlled; as calm as it was furious. It gave and took life just as effectively as many other mechanisms on the land could, but it did so with far less discrimination.

Staring as far as one could see, it seemed as though many things just continued beyond what was known at any given time, not thinking that perhaps the horizon was the limit and perhaps one was just moving, surrounded by some sort of box.

Lying down and watching some of the clouds pass by, a person felt a small insect land on them, seeming to think that a significantly larger creature was a safe place to land for a moment to have a rest before taking off again and continuing on its search for food and a mate before deciding that it was time to pass on, unless it became a sweet delicacy for something a bit more aggressive than it could ever be.

After some time, the person decided to get moving, for winds were picking up and warmth was deciding that it was time to go to slumber.

It was still a significant distance from home and the last thing the person wanted to do was spend time traveling there in the dark and cold, which, whilst they had done so a number of times, were keenly aware of the dangers such an act posed and would rather avoid it if they could.

They kept a steady pace for as long as they felt necessary before deciding to relax a bit. However, noticing that late evening was readily approaching, they decided to pick up their pace to a light jog.

Reaching a partially-define path, they continued at their speed until it became a little too dark to continue with any real ease, for nocturnal creatures would come out and moving right into one could cause an antagonistic reaction that would lead to needless fighting.

Slowly feeling their way along, the person managed to make significant progress for a while. However, compounding on their troubles, rain set in quickly, not leaving much opportunity for making a temporary shelter.

They needed to act quickly.

Darling Harbour

Recently, whilst heading home, I took this picture.

On my ongoing and never-ending “Quest” to become a better photographer, after processing and ending up with a result that closely matched what I saw – the second image – I played around a bit  and ended up with the first  image.

I think it looks a little like it is an impressionistic picture.

Also, I like how this has been framed, which is not something I don’t think I was taking into consideration when I took the shot.

This is my submission for The Daily Post‘s photo challenge this week

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 139: Sand

Well, it’s an evening.

That’s really a surprising thing to… something.

Almost as if a transverse sky has reached out to caress the ocean, the sand has risen in waves to caress the populace, pushing outward, upward, and forward unto lands new and fresh to help build the great body of sand that engulfs anything that is not liquid in order to create a mass unison of life buried under grains upon grains upon grains that continuously encroach on everything that it can touch.

And of course, with all of that being said, there are some who object, preferring their individuality and the ability to breathe, but as far as most are aware, there’s no real complaints to be heard and it has been reported that it’s quite well liked as there’s no longer the worry of the need to eat or the need to think. All there is, is sand, and that’s the way that many seem to like it once they have been consumed by the sand as it continues to spread, only stopping once it reached the ocean, for the ocean can wash it all away if it chooses, as, no matter how much sand there is, it is always powerless to the ocean, for the ocean is always infinitely more powerful than the sand could ever hope to be.

For that reason, the sand is unable to connect with other areas, forever being unable to be complete, despite many attempts.

It has tried to bridge expanses many a time, only to have the ocean tear it down and trap it permanently until it is needed to form something new.

It has tried to travel underneath, only to reach a point where the ocean would be able to grab and force it to go no further.

The sand is forever stuck, but it always yearns to be as complete and unified as possible.

It has tried to reach for the air in order to leave, but it is not powerful enough to have enough strength to hold a structure as complete as it would need to in order for this to work.

Its only hope would be for the ocean to dry, but by the time something such as that would happen, the sand itself would not be able to reap the benefit of this happening, thus leaving it in a position of continuous wanting and desire for something that it cannot have, and so it continues to consume and absorb all that it can, regardless of protests that those who might object might present, for being unified with a whole is, in the sand’s opinion, is something greater preferred than any notion of individuality that some might think is a better choice when looking at something in the long term, as, when unified, everything is taken care of, including thinking, thus creating a place without need or want.

However, the sand still wants to be completely unified, and the ocean still prevents it from being able.

So I started rambling and then ran with it.

That’s all there is to it.

Light Rail

Here’s a photo I took earlier in the month.

I wanted to get a close long exposure of a tram, and that is what I ended up with.

I like how it looks like a mass of light moving into the tunnel.
I like that it looks stretched out.
…And so on.

This is my seventy-third picture I’ve submitted to Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

If you’re interested in monochrome photography, I recommend checking it out and considering submitting something.

I also recommend you check out Leanne Cole’s work.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

An Issue that Bothers me

There’s something that’s been bothering me a fair bit in recent times.

It’s the amount of focus that refugees have been receiving.

To be specific, it’s the focus on their plight that has been bothering me.

Before anyone grabs their torches and pitchforks, I have to state that I do not have a problem with the amount of attention this particular issues has been receiving. Nor do I have a problem with the fact that people are fighting for their rights.

Anyone who is fleeing from a whole load of bullshit that no one should have to deal with should be given the opportunity to be protected from that. When it comes to how their plight seems to be treated, I think that it can be handled much better in Australia than how it has been so far.

What bothers me about it is that most people seem to not care about the Aborigines so much anymore, or they don’t want to think about them.

The Aborigines seem to have become the elephant in the room. There’s still a lot of problems that are happening with how they’re treated, as well as what is perceived as what they should have as rights versus what they actually get as rights.

Before anyone says anything about financial benefits and preferential treatment in certain areas, the problem is you can’t just throw money and preference at a problem and hope it goes away, because the problems haven’t.

The issue is that they need to actually be treated entirely as equals rather than given some compensation and then swept to the side.

This is a major problem and people seem to pretend that it’s not, instead focusing on the refugee problem, which, whilst is a big issue, should a be treated as an issue that is equal to the one involving a group of people that have been in the country for much longer than the majority of the populace who still seem to be treated poorly.

A quick side note: I do not like using emotive language when it comes to issues such as these, so I apologise for any that I may have used and may now end up using.

Anyway, a big question I have is this: How many people will still care about refugees once the ones who are still getting treated poorly are allowed into Australia?

They still have issues they need to deal with, but I can’t help but think that they will no longer be flavour of the month once one issue is solved.

It’s a bit like the pro-life people. Most of them don’t care about a baby once it’s born.
They only seem to care that their own interests in something that’s not their business aren’t offended or challenged.

Again, I have to state that I don’t have a problem with the refugees getting attention and their right to be here getting fought for. I think that, between the fight for the rights of the Indigenous people of Australia and the refugees, there’s a significant imbalance that needs to be addressed.

How are we meant to properly care about how people trying to come into the country are treated if we don’t seem to want to keep fighting alongside people who were in this country before us?

Another Self-portrait

I took this picture whilst walking from Waterfall to Loftus.

I ended up playing around a lot with the light levels, as well as the contrast and saturation.

I’m happy with the result as, to me, it becomes more about the shape and tone than it does about the person.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 138: Swinging Room

I just had a really bizarre moment.

Well, it was about one hour ago now and it may have not actually been that bizarre, but I feel it was, so I’m going to try and write about it right now.

When I woke up this morning, I was trying to work out as to whether I was going to go to a café around the corner from where I live and get coffee as I did not get enough sleep last night, but wasn’t tired to the point of being unable to function.

After a few hours, I decided that coffee was indeed needed, so I had a shower, put on some clothes, went into the backyard to see how some of the plants were doing (this place has a backyard, a massive positive for me as the last place didn’t have what I would call a backyard and I really missed having a backyard).

There had been a vine that had been killing a few trees that I’ve slowly removed and there is some green returning to one of them, so I wanted to check on that, as well as the plants Je and I took with us from our previous place. The tree has some more green in its leaves at the moment and the plants are starting to look healthier (they were re-potted and one of them looked like it had died recently, but it hadn’t [as evidenced by it having what appears to be a leaf sprouting]), but that’s all a story for another time, so I better get back to what I was originally going to talk about.

After being in my backyard, I headed to the café to get my coffee and ordered once I arrived there, as one usually does when they go to a café to get coffee.

Whilst I was waiting, I looked to one side of the café and saw that the room was swaying back and forth.

It was fairly intense as, when I walked in, the room was fine and stationary. I wasn’t sure if I was getting some kind of vertigo or if the room was somehow hinged and actually swinging.

After a few seconds, I looked to the wall to the right of where I was looking and found myself feeling quite thankful that the room was not swinging.

It turned out that it was just a mirror on a wall that was in my peripheral.

The room then returned to normal, I got my coffee and a slice of banana bread that I also ordered and made my way back home to get away from the café and the visual trick that my mind managed to play on me in that one instance.

It wasn’t pleasant in the slightest and now it’s over. I’d like to know how the mirror was set in motion, but that would involve going back to the café and therefore more swinging room shenanigans.

I’ve had enough of that today.

I’m feeling a bit nauseated from the experience, but at least I was able to write about it!

Radiohead: A Moon Shaped Pool Review

So I’ve been trying to get a review done for A Moon Shaped Pool for a while now but I haven’t had much luck, so I’ve decided to try and power through it right now whilst listening to a Blind Idiot God song on repeat (“Thunderhead”) because somehow I think that doing so is a good idea.

Maybe I think it’ll enable me to spit out the same kind of pretentious wank that comes from a music website out there (as well as a physical publication I could spend a long time ranting about, but now is not the time for that).

So Radiohead have released a new album… four months ago. It’s a cracker. Kind of.

The album seems to have a fairly sombre mood, yet overall they’re delivered with a fairly laid-back feel, coming off more as relaxed and calm, despite downcast emotions.
This might have to do with the majority of what is heard being rather soft and, in a sense, quiet. Even “Ful Stop”, the most (and pretty much only) frantic song on the album, does not sound overt, fitting in well with the rest of the album. There are occasions where an instrument (or instruments) might become a bit more prominent than others. However, it never becomes obnoxious and is always in service of the song.

Whilst strings have been used to great effect on some songs of previous Radiohead albums, here they get to be a bit more prominent, accentuating melody and atmosphere for most of the songs they appear on, whilst seeming to be the basis of the others (“Burn the Witch” comes to mind).

Thom Yorke still sings well, although at times it can be difficult to tell if he sounds interested. It’s like that he was, but due to his delivery at various points throughout A Moon Shaped Pool, it becomes hard to tell how much. With that being said, the most likely reason it becomes hard to discern is how his voice works with the rest of the band, as he too is, for the most part, sounding fairly laid back and low-key with his delivery.

With all of that being said, at times it feels as though there’s something off with the album. It can come off as a bit lifeless, or at least drained. It’s clear that there has been a fair bit of effort put into its creation. However, sometimes some of the songs feel like they should be livelier than they are.

A Moon Shaped Pool is a decent Blind Idiot God Radiohead album. Like most albums, it has moments that are stronger than others. However, overall it’s a good collection of songs that work well together.

Looking Up

Two Thursdays ago, Ewe and I walked to the city from Ewe’s place.

I had to pick up a camera lens that was being repaired and Ewe had to pick up his phone along the way as it was also being repaired.

I took this photo when walking down a small street as I liked how tall the buildings around us were.

I also like the shape and angularity of the buildings.

Processing this was fairly easy as it was only minor adjustments that needed to be made. I decided to have a bit of fun with it in the last two images due to stuffing around with another photo that turned out interestingly (to me).

I submitted the monochrome image as my seventy-second entry into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness“.

I recommend checking out what people submit, as well as Leanne Cole’s work.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
