Godflesh: A World Lit Only by Fire Review

And so following the release of Decline & Fall, we’ve now the release of (to some) a highly anticipated album.

Is it worthy of being considered good?

In short, yes.

Is it worthy of being considered great?

Well…

Kicking off with “New Dark Ages”, the album is an almost relentless assault, only letting up for the grinding “Carrion” and “Towers of Emptiness” and on the monolithic closing track, “Forgive our Fathers”.

The duo are a focused machine throughout all the tracks, combining dissonance and harmony to create a bleak and tense sound. They’re aware that they work best as a cohesive unit and have made sure that the whole is the priority here. The guitar, bass, drums and vocals remain rhythmically focused and only allowed a brief flourish when it serves to strengthen the music.

Broadrick is in top form with his vocals, whether he is screaming or singing. Once again, he keeps it appropriate and his lyrics remain terse yet effective.
His playing is heavily riff-based and still very much true to the Godflesh sound. It is always adding rather than subtracting and whilst it is prominent, it is not spotlight stealing.

Green remains an excellent bass player. I still believe his crunching bass is the most important element of the band and listening to this album only serves to strengthen that belief. It always seems to be driving the rhythm along and what everything is built around whilst remaining equal to the other instruments in the mix.

At times, A World Lit Only by Fire seems to be shaped more by Songs of Love and Hate than by the work that preceded that album. I say this due to what I perceive here as a distinct hip-hop sound permeating throughout most of the songs (mostly heard in the drums) and how riff-laden the album is compared to what came prior, especially Streetcleaner which, whilst containing a lot of similarly bleak and dissonant elements, was probably their work most defined by industrial music, ambient, soundscapes and (self-titled EP aside) minimalistic playing.

Songs of Love and Hate is, to me, their album that was as close to hip-hop as Godflesh ever has been but also far more riff-heavy than what came before it. The style of screaming is also far more similar to SoLaH, being only slightly deeper in comparison. This is why I feel there are strong similarities, but only at times. A World Lit Only by Fire is a far more minimalistic, less wordy affair that also has the same sense of heaviness that was found on early Godflesh.

However, I do feel that it can sound a little too digital at times and whilst it makes the album sound more machine-like in ways, this is something the band was able to achieve previously without the same effect. I also feel that it does sound a bit compressed at times, but maybe this is something I’m perceiving and is not actually there. With that being said, I found these to be the the only points of contention I have.

I do believe this is the best album that Godflesh are able to release at this stage. That they’ve spent a good deal of time on it is quite clear and despite the extended period they were inactive, they’ve created a solid, well executed work. I do also think that they’ll be able to do better on subsequent releases as they keep pushing forward.

If Hymns was a reaction to heavy music at the time it was released, then A World Lit Only by Fire is a reaction to Hymns and what has come since. It manages to sound a lot like early Godflesh yet at the same time quite different. It is an evolution but also a new beginning and it’s good to have them back.

Public Holiday

Today is a public holiday and I have to work.

WHY?!

To be honest, I don’t mind.
It’ll be quiet in the office and I’ll be able to focus on what I do because of that.

I’ll be getting paid a lot more as well and only have to work for five hours.

I was finally able to start my work day with a swim, albeit a brief one. It was quite refreshing. The water was a good temperature and there weren’t many people around so it felt a bit more like I had the beach to myself.

I’m not sure if I’m going to head to the beach again after work or go straight home instead. I’ll probably end up going home as I need to buy a few things on the way and I want to spend some time on music, but having another swim is quite tempting.

I’m somewhat surprised as to how clear and clean the water is at Brighton-Le-Sands. It’s in Botany Bay and also quite close to Sydney Airport, so it doesn’t make sense to me, but I imagine there’s a valid explanation that probably involves currents.

I did end up cycling on Saturday. They popped in very briefly just after I came home and told me the open inspection went well and then apologised for being unable to close the back door. I let them know it was fine, not understanding how badly they screwed up. When I went to close the back door before going to sleep later, I noticed that they managed to jam part of it onto the lower part that keeps it in place (it’s a sliding double door). Now the door is a bit damaged.

Well played real estate.

Well played.

Shihad: FVEY Review

I have one question.

Just one.

Who mastered this?
Just about everything sounds compressed and muddy. I find myself turning it down to listen to it without feeling like I’m going through an aural assault because it’s too loud.

I’ve seen the album described as being brutal.
If it is brutal, it’s because it sounds shit.

There. I said it.

If anyone takes issue with that, well too bad. It is an awful mix that only serves to drag the quality of the album down.

It was Forrester Savell who mixed and mastered this?

Why am I not surprised?

Sometimes he’s alright. I’ve heard him do some great work. I’ve also heard him do some stuff that leaves a lot to be desired.

With that being said, this might be the worst I’ve heard him do.

If this turned out to be a decision from Jaz Coleman or Shihad and not Forrester’s choice, then shame on him from choosing to bow down to that kind of crap.

Now that I’ve said what I wanted to about the sound quality, I’ll talk about the rest of the album.

It’s not too bad.

It’s not too good either.

There are a some songs that will rank amongst Shihad’s best.
There are also some that feel undercooked. However, they still fit in well on the track list.

The band does sounds far more impassioned than they did on the previous two albums (both decent but needed a bit more work).

Much of the music has a lot of groove and flow and the approach has been kept simple and highly direct. Whilst the drumming is the most noticeably stripped down, just about everything else has been reigned in, making the band much tighter than usual as they aggressively attack their instruments and also allowing for clearer emoting through the music.

Speaking of which, Jon Toogood is usually better when it comes to lyrics.
Whilst there’s no denying how angry he and the others sound, there’s a bit too much cheese for my liking.

Having Jaz Coleman work on the album was definitely a good idea.
At this stage in their career, Shihad need someone to help them with the creative process as this is quite possibly their most inspired work in a long time. With that being said, it could’ve been better.

For some reason, the four bonus tracks from the special edition were left off. They easily outshine a good portion of the album as they sound quite complete and, mixing and mastering aside, heavier than most of the album.

To me, a good example would be “Funeral Dance”, the last of the bonus tracks. It could’ve easily replaced the closing track, “Cheap As” as it sounds far more incisive and bitter. It also manages to say what it needs to without meandering aimlessly, something I feel that “Cheap As” does (although I do quite like the main riff). It is also the closest to sounding like Killing Joke that the band has ever been.

Whilst Jaz Coleman has clearly had a positive impact on the band, too much of the album sounds really beefy, bulky and overly muscular. Sometimes the songs can come off as a bit big and dumb because of this.
That may be the point though, considering a lot of it seems to be politically themed and sometimes it’s better to have something hit hard, despite how long it may take to reach that stage.

With that being said I feel Shihad work better as a sleek, lean and muscular unit. They are more than able to be dynamically heavy and it’s something they do better than heavy heavy. A good example would be “Debs Night Out” from Killjoy. Whilst the album doesn’t feel like it’s attacking you, a lot of it is quite abrasive and confrontational, especially for a guitar record. “Debs Night Out” sits right in the middle and doesn’t sound anything like the other songs. It’s quite light and airy, being somewhat of a reprieve, creating an interesting dichotomy sound-wise. However, the lyrics (seemingly about confronting someone over damaging behaviour) make the song as heavy as the rest of the album thematically and emotionally, making it feel more in place, thus strengthening the album instead of weakening it.

Comparatively, “Loves Long Shadow” (a song about losing a loved one) can be seen as a similar track. However, whilst it is the song that sounds the least similar to the rest of the FVEY and seems somewhat thematically and emotionally connected to the other songs, it’s not by much. It also loses impact being the penultimate track instead of being placed a slight bit earlier on in the album.

Killjoy works because whilst it is quite intense, it isn’t continuously punching you in the face or screaming at you as close to your eardrum as possible.

I don’t think FVEY is a great album. There are times where it’s really good and there are times where it’s alright. Unfortunately it’s hampered by the poor sound quality. However, I do think it is a step in the right direction for Shihad and I’m sure that if they keep working with Jaz Coleman they can put out an album that will be vastly superior to this and quite possibly the majority of their discography.

A dull Weekend begins with a Saturday

For the first time since the last time this happened, I slept for more than six-and-a-half-hours last night.

I think it’s been two or three weeks.
Maybe longer.
I’m not entirely sure.

I worked it out to be around eight-and-a-half hours. A slight bit longer than the preferred eight, but it’s still a significant improvement.

I don’t feel anywhere near as tired as I did yesterday. Nor do I feel irritable.

Today there is an open inspection at my place as it is going to be auctioned at the end of the month. Hopefully someone who wants rent purchases it, as I don’t want to move again. I am finally enjoying this suburb and it’s the fifth place I’ve lived in since moving out of home (through no fault of my own).

I’ll probably go for a cycle around Iron Cove to kill time.

Maybe do two laps.

I spent a few minutes trying to reattach a smoke alarm this morning. It wouldn’t go into standby so instead of continuing, I took the battery out. It was quite loud.

I am going to apologise in advance for the amount of posts I may be making over the next two days. There are a lot of things I want to get finished. I might spread them out instead. I’m not sure.

Another Shot of a small part of Sydney Harbour

My apologies for the unoriginal title.

Titling something is usually what I have tthe most difficulty with.

Anyway, as I was on the way home I thought the sun looked quite grand and magnificent, so I took this picture.

It didn’t turn out as well as I hoped, probably due to being stuck with my phone camera again, but I think it’s still a nice picture.

Also, I’m pretty sure the photo is on a bit of an angle.

Well, it seems to at least contrast nicely with the last photo I took here.

Enjoy.

Cycle Story

This story is going to be brief, but it’s kind of worth telling

On Saturday last weekend, I unintentionally cycled 53.75 kilometres.

I was planning on cycling to Tempe Station via Iron Cove as it’s something I hadn’t done before and I’d noticed there is a pathway to get there.

Getting over the hill before Iron Cove Bridge was a hassle as per ususal.

Often there’s a fair bit of wind there but it was a lot calmer this time so it made cycling around Iron Cove much easier.

I reached the pathway fairly quickly and it was fairly straightforward for a while.

Eventually I hit Parramatta Road. This is when things became a bit more difficult.

The only way to cross Parramatta Road without taking a large detour was by going up to the tram (aka light rail) station and crossing that way, which thankfully had an elevator.

Shortly after that, the cycleway ended and signs became far less frequent than they were previously, to the point where I had to guess the direction at times.

After a few mishaps in heading the wrong direction, I eventually found myself in a familiar area, crossing Cooks River via Wardell Road.

I’ve been through this part twice before, doing about 52 kilometres from work to home (about 44 kilometres longer than the usual trip home) as apparently I have an interesting view on what could be classified as sensible.

Being familiar with the area, instead of continuing to Tempe Station (which was quite close), I decided to head out to Strathfield via the Cooks River cycleway as it was pretty close as well.

Well, that’s how I remembered it anyway.

When the track seemingly kept going, I started wondering if I should turn back as I didn’t think I’d have the energy to get back.

Other thoughts amounted to ‘this isn’t quite how I remember it. They must’ve made it longer somehow’.

Eventually I did reach Strathfield with a fair bit of energy remaining. I took a quick break and then began to return.

When I reach Wardell Road again, I had begun to tire. However, I kept pushing because again, apparently I have an interesting view on what could be classified as sensible.

That and I wanted to make it to Tempe Station.

I did make it. It was satisfying. Then, in cliché fasion, I had a wonderful idea.

‘I guess I’ll cycle the rest of the way home!’

Urgh.

I went around Sydney Airport into Mascot, where apart from recognising a few streets, I found myself to be unaware of where I specifically was and where I was meant to be heading.

Somehow I managed to end up reaching Cleveland Street in Redfern after a lengthy period of guesswork, which meant I was able to get onto Abercrombie Street easily and arrive home shortly after that.

My legs were quite sore after that.

On a side note, I stopped off at Broadway Shopping Center on the way home for some minor shopping, but that’s irrelevant.

I made it

And it was wonderful.

Although brief, I’m glad I went straight to Brighton-Le-Sands after work.

Going for a Swim

I’ve made two attempts over the last week to get to Brighton-Le-Sands in the morning for a swim and both attempts have ended in failure.

The first one was due to me horribly misjudging how long it would take as it had been a while since I’d gone there.

The second time (early in the morning today) was due to my attempt at taking a route that would cut a slight bit of time off and getting a little bit lost instead and subsequently increasing the time it took me.

Both times I’ve caught the train from Tempe station as I’ve had to go to work due to being too low on time to continue.

It is a bit frustrating, mainly because of it being my own fault, but also because I am really missing being in the water without many people around.

When I go to the beach, it usually involves a bush walk early in the morning. The particular beach I go to doesn’t have many visitors and the surf is nice and strong.

Unfortunately that’s a large distance to cycle for a brief swim.

The reason why I’ve attempted to go to Brighton-Le-Sands is that it’s close to home and I’m (usually) familiar with the route).

Also, even though I enjoy a strong surf, I do like that, due to it being in a bay, it has a calm surf which would be nice in the morning.

I have just found out that Bondi Beach would take roughly the same time, so I might give that a go from time to time, depending on how I feel.

I really do miss being in water a lot. I wasn’t able to go swimming much last summer, so hopefully I can do a fair bit during the one that is fast approaching.

Especially before work, so I can maximize how often I can go.

My Attempt at making a Pug

So I tried to make a picture of a pug that looked proud for my ex.

It took a bit longer than I thought it would.

Here was the first attempt.

image

                              “Rawr”

I guess it looks like a pug. Kind of.

I took it a bit more seriously after that.

image

It doesn’t quite look like a pug, but I was getting there.

After a bit more work, I ended up with this:

image

Well, it still doesn’t look like a pug, but I tried.

My ex liked it. She thought it looked quite proud.

There’s one more I did, just before the last one as I was getting frustrated and decided to do something a bit different. Personally, I think it is the best one.

I hope you all enjoy it.
