Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1079: Procrastinating Ramble

So today has come around and I sit here and I wait for things to happen in an order that makes sense. There are sounds outside and there are sounds inside, but this has nothing to do with anything other than everything and nothing at the same time.

It comes down to how you view it, really. How do you view it? How do I view it? Is there anything to view at all? Maybe all is static and the sound is there, but it is static. It is not something in motion and therefore there is nothing here to analyse or overanalyse.  Then again, maybe there is, but that’s not something I want to get into. What I want to get into is a smattering of words in an order that appears to make sense, but actually does not make nay sense whatsoever.

So now that that is out of the way I must admit that there is a need to continue on with whatever it was that I as doing before I started this. However, the order has been disrupted and now everything is disintegrating, so therefore I need to think of a way to save everything before it all falls apart far beyond whatever allowable limit for falling apart there happens to be as decided by whatever I feel like making the metrics and all that other stuff.

This said, I refuse to take action. I refuse to do anything about it as I don’t want to. I want to relax and listen to the cicadas in their chirping which seems to be getting louder, which I hope is a good thing. I want to relax and take it easy and forget about all of the things that I need to remember as that takes a lot of time and effort and I can only do so much of what requires time and effort, and right now my reserves are low as I want to be lazy and so my focus is on being lazy over anything else, really.

Anyway, now that I’ve said all of that I need to think of ways to go about getting to the end of this writing. This is something that I’ve done many a time before and I will inevitably do in the future. However, right now I am pretending that I have not and so I will continue on with what it is that I need to say in order to get to the end of this bit of writing.

What it is that I need to say is that I’m not sure as to how to go about getting to the end of this writing, but that may not necessarily be truthful and so I might not say that. Instead I might just procrastinate until I get to the end, then say that the end has been reached, then get on with my life as there is a lot of getting on that I need to do today.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:01:71

Very rough and messy writing, this one.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

This review was started in early 2020 and finished now.

I wrote a good chunk of it when I first started, then stopped for a long time. I think I added some bits here and there, then added another chunk last year, then stopped again. Finished it today as it needed to be completed and I strongly desired to have it done.

This review isn’t great. I feel I could’ve covered more and I probably should have. Alas, I did not and the final result is lacking.

Most of my interview and review work now appears on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going and (aside from the next few weeks) new episodes are available through there first.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

I hope you enjoy.

Well, the Sywalker trilogy is finally over, or is it the the Skywalker saga? At this point it’s probably more appropriate to call it the Palpatine saga considering he’s behind everything.

Oh yeah; spoilers to follow.

The Rise of Skywalker concerns our plucky group and their quest to stop a bad thing, or something. At the start Palpatine returns, delivers throwaway dialogue about Snoke and pushes Kylo Ren forward as a threat. Somewhere around then Palpatine reveals his shiny new star destroyer fleet which is large enough to eradicate all potential tension. Then a chase race ensues.

From there Skywalker grows into a film difficult to take seriously. Instead of a desperate scenario filled with urgency and adventure, a series of insults is hurled at the audience as a desperate scramble for tension flows outward.

You know what partly made Shin Godzilla work? For the most part Godzilla’s presence was there, driving the plot forward. Sure, the film sometimes feels less about an irradiated creature and more about the way government handles issues. However a lot of their actions were related to the sudden appearance of something not dealt with before.

Palpatine’s inclusion, whilst feeling unwarranted, is great, if only for Ian McDiarmid’s abilities as an actor. That said, like most other things in Skywalker, he feels like a box to tick. He kind of stands there, floats around a bit and doesn’t really move. When scenes move away from him, Palpatine’s presence fades away, leaving most of the pressure and driving force to come from the film throwing scenes at you. Sure, this film doesn’t need to be Shin Godzilla. However, the implied driving force of the plot often remains suggested rather than actualised. But I digress.

Aside from their being physically in the film and a few parts felt thrown in, gone are the characters Poe and Finn.  Instead of continuing on from The Last Jedi‘s ideas, Skywalker is happy to not meaningfully build on them. For some this is a good thing as The Last Jedi is a pretty, yet inconsistent film.

The idea of Daisy Ridley’s parents being shitty nobodies is a great one. Sure, it’s troubling, but at least in The Force Awakens she was able to look past this and push it aside to focus on what she felt necessary. The great thing about this is what it suggests; you don’t need some sort of great heritage to succeed, be powerful and do great things. Whilst this does simplify the suggestion and its application to reality, it’s still worth considering as it speaks of what should more often be.

Skywalker goes for the “It doesn’t matter who your parents are” message again, but in a way that strongly implies it does through an additional twist on the parents being nobodies. That your connections are more likely to determine your success is a more realistic suggestion. However, dressing it up as “You don’t have to be evil just because a relative is” doesn’t make the suggestion any less shitty and lazy.

There were other ways to explore what remained of Daisy Ridley’s arc after she and Adam Driver discuss how her parents were nobodies who sold her for booze money in a manner that both gave the dialogue the importance it needed whilst also suggesting the meaninglessness of its revelation. Sure, there’s the question of how much you should trust an antagonist, but going “Well actually” cheapened that moment whilst also preventing any possibility to explore connected lingering questions in a meaningful way.

So anyway, everyone acts their way through scenes and Sir Anthony Daniels has a chance to monologue about friends; friends who either barely knew him or mostly treated his character like crap. His role is important, albeit forced and soon after his key moment he mostly fades from view. John Boyega and Oscar Isaac get important moments and do the best with what they have, but mostly feel superfluous to events. At a stretch it makes sense but surely they could’ve had better involvement in the goings-on. Whilst they have moments, what they have feels like an afterthought of convenience rather than a genuine sense of belonging. That said, they don’t feel as underutilised as Kellie Marie Tran whom, whilst poorly implemented in The Last Jedi, had a lot of wasted potential here.

Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley also do the best with what they have. Their scenes together are mostly okay, though some have problematic undertones. Their characters are believable at times and ridiculous at others, but otherwise they are mostly okay. Sometimes they’re believable; at other times they’re passable, but ultimately it’s just enough for the film.

Once more Ian McDiarmid steals the show with ease. Not only does he outperform everyone else, but he does it whilst barely moving and dressed as a vampire. He makes good use of going over the top and his performance is delightful to watch. Sure, his inclusion doesn’t feel warranted. He’s by far the best thing of Skywalker; there is no contest, which is unfortunate and feels like more of a fault with the directing than it does the actors.

I want to give Skywalker more respect. I really do. However, it was a film that did little to earn it. It came off as rushed and made to appease as many people as possible. It was too willing to get through as much as quickly as possible in a way that left a lot of the film feeling as though it was there just because. Less may have been more here; it’s possible that cutting down on how much the actors move from different locations could’ve allowed for a better sense of urgency to develop. That said, that would’ve alleviated only one of many problems. There are enjoyable moments, and as a conclusion it’s satisfies the requirement of concluding a story. Beyond that it offers little other than suggestions of what it could’ve been.

Walk Through Rings

Same bridge as this one.

I think in this photo there’s more of a sense of depth, and I like how that works to enhance the pattern formed by the frame.

I also like how there’s a cold, industrial feel to this. It’s a little bleak. At the same time, it’s kind of not.

I hope you enjoy.

Renting Rant

I’m sitting here and I’ve been trying to think of a way to write in a polite and (hopefully) entertaining manner. I’ve been trying to think of how I can express myself and avoid dipping into anger – at least, overtly – so I can get what I want to get across in a way that is a little more engaging than just spilling out a whole lot of rage and frustration. Alas, it appears that that is not the way today and so I should just go ahead with what I’m going to say and not worry so much about how it comes across.

For two months my partner and I have been trying to rent out a room in our house. We live in a pretty good location; not the best, but it is pretty good. The street is mostly quiet but it’s close to main roads and it’s easy enough to get public transport to get around. It’s a relaxed and safe area and the house, whilst also not the best, has a lot of space to it.

It wasn’t always, but now that things have calmed down a bit in the house, it’s a nice place to be. Easy to get to and from more popular areas and easy to to just be here and relax. That said, rent needs to be taken care of and no one has taken the room which isn’t exactly putting us in the best of financial positions.

Most of the reasons I’ve been getting back are that people don’t want to inspect as the place is inconvenient to get to, or that it’s not close enough to things. At the same time, I’ve regularly read and heard people discussing how hard it is to get a place at the moment; places that are often in areas of high demand.

If people don’t want to move in here as they find an additional ten minutes added to a commute to popular areas to be too much, I can’t do anything. I can’t control that and I can’t change their minds, try as I might, but it really pisses me off that people won’t consider this place due to that additional time, because that’s all it adds. This suburb isn’t popular. It’s not cool and it doesn’t have a bustling night life. It’s a quiet suburb.

It’s also close to a lot of shops and is far enough from things to feel like you’re away from the city whilst close enough to be able to easily reach it with little additional time.

I get that a lot of people out there don’t want to spend that extra time. I get that it is preferable to be closer to where things are perceived as happening. However, I don’t think you have the right to complain about having difficulty in getting a place if you’re rejecting rooms based on their adding a bit more time to your commute.

It makes me think about privilege and classism in Sydney as you get a lot of people who want to be among the multiculturalism of Sydney’s inner west, as well as among all the artistry of the popular areas, and yet draw an arbitrary line of what is and is not considered part of said area and refuse to venture out further than that. Generally it’s somewhere around Petersham and people won’t venture farther out west than that for reasons I do not know, but can only guess involve some sort of lack of belief in what lies beyond there as being multicultural, or artsy, or cool. Perhaps it is some sort of belief in anything beyond that being less safe. If so, it’s just more bullshit.

It’s as though people feel some sort of impassable obstacle at the idea of not being as close to everything as possible and that the inconvenience of spending a bit more time traveling is an affront to getting anything done. Maybe they feel that if they are in an area that isn’t as close to everything as possible, then they’ll think lesser of themselves, as though they dare mingle with people poorer than them. I don’t know if that is the case and there is probably a good argument to be made that I’m making some big leaps here, but that’s how it feels. If people don’t want to move to this area, then fine. They’re missing out on a good place that’s close enough and far enough for less rent than if they were in an area much closer to a train station, or where they want to spend their time. It is their loss at the end of the day.

However, at the same time it’s our loss too as we’re approaching a point where we can’t afford the rent here anymore. My work is drying up and I’m hunting for another job, but there are no bites. My partner’s contract wraps up soon and she needs to get more work coming up sooner rather than later. It’s not a great position to be in as, if we can’t afford the rent here by ourselves, then we don’t have much of a roof over our heads. It’s not exactly what I’d describe as being a fun position to be in.

Of course we could look for another place, but we don’t have the money to move. We could look for a room in another place, but we also don’t have the money for storage in case things don’t sell quickly enough. It’s frustrating and aggravating as, unless someone decides to accept the indignity of about ten extra minutes of commute, or our job situation changes, we’re not in a good position.

What really helps in a situation such as this is money. Both liking this rant and passing on well wishes does not help. If you’ve liked or followed this blog for any length of time, then please consider either buying my work or supporting on Patreon. Don’t just like this and forget.

Sorry for the rant. It’s a shitty situation to be in and unless things change within the next couple of weeks or we get more money coming in, it’s not looking good.

Car Park With a View

A recent photo, this one.

I was walking around this area and it started raining.
Stood under shelter and waited for the rain to stop, then took this photo.

It’s sort of a direct photo, as level as I could get it at the time.

I like the sense of space as well as the sense of transition regarding the weather.
I think it helps to create a sense of quiet, and maybe a sense of smallness.

I hope you enjoy.

Birds Around the Edge

Birds among water and a bit of land.
Perhaps a little wedge of land, but land nonetheless.

I think this photo works better in monochrome than it does colour. The colour one as differentiation, but I think it works better when it becomes more about shade and tone than it does colour.

I hope you enjoy.

A Poem About Some Pain

I’ve had a few days of pain that started off as ice pick headaches somewhere around my ear. It has now progressed onto my tongue and remains a constant rather than a series of sharp pains, but it seems to be fading away.

Anyway, here’s a crappy poem about the pain.

I hope you enjoy.

It began with a series of pangs
Stretched across a day
Making themselves clear
As they marked out moments

Eventually the pangs dulled
And melded into each other
Becoming a constant
To hold attention

They moved further down
Into what space they could
And settled where
They could ensure their presence

Lines in the Rock

Another photo of the same rock area eroded by wind as in these photos.

I’m not sure as to what has happened here. I think there may have been some major impact from some sort of liquid, but I’m not certain. It’s possible that this is just showing layers that weren’t affected by liquid, but… yeah. If I knew more about geology I could be more certain with my words.

Anyway, I do like the layering and lines as I feel it creates some interesting details and colouring in the rock.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-eighty-fifth Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Change“.

I like how you can see the effects of erosion here and think about how over (what is to us) a lengthy period of time this area has changed in its appearance.

The host of the Lens-Artists challenges cycles weekly between the following people:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This year three people are joining the Lens-Artists team:

John Steiner of Journeys with Johnbo

Sofia Alves of  Photographias

Anne Sandler of Slow Shutter Speed

As such the above hosting order is likely to change.

This one is curated by John. The next one is curated by Sofia.

I recommend participating in the challenges. They’re enjoyable and allow room for interpretation of the theme without straying too far. If you don’t participate, then I recommend that you at least check out what others of the Lens-Artists community are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

Frame Wraps Around

This was taken a few days ago.

I was walking around near Matraville and walked across this bridge. Decided to take photos as I liked its appearance.

I like the frame’s spread caused by distance from the camera. It almost feels like it’s guiding. Not so much a fan of the footpath as it appears a bit flat.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1078: Constantly Cool

Slow days do that slow thing and all that and I sit here and relax a little more than I should. However, you take it all in and you see how things progress and then you feel that you’ve been put in the thing that you’ve been put in for a reason, but you try to ignore it (much easier done than said) as you don’t want to think about it too much.

So anyway, it’s cool and I sit here feeling cool and perhaps that means that I am actually cool. I don’t know if that is indeed the case, but I feel cool and so I can pretend that I am cool. I can pretend that I am the coolest that ever was and in pretending that I can somehow be even cooler than I could ever think possible.

I’m slick. I’m sublime. I’m the greatest. I’m reinventing things that are yet to exist with my sheer style. I’m constantly on fleek and there is no one who can stand in the way. Of course this doesn’t account for the fact that I’m sitting down, but you get the idea.

Anyway, I’m so cool that ice freezes into super ice when it is around me. I’m so cool that sunglasses make me look less cool and mysterious, as there are no sunglasses powerful enough to make me look cooler.

I’m so cool that I have to talk about how cool I am in order to take sure that everyone knows how cool I am. That’s how cool I am.

However, I’m not so cool that I can’t sit down and look lazy at the same time. Everything I do is so effortless, and yet it requires the maximum amount of effort to get across just how effortless it all is.

Anyway, I think you all get the idea. Now that the idea has gotten across, I think I’ll just take it easy to the max and relax in a way that is so relaxed that I cannot even begin to discuss just how relaxed I will be once I start relaxing. It will be so relaxed, this relaxing, that there will be no way to see it coming as it’ll be that smooth. It will be amazing and all of those other things and… yeah.

So anyway, I think I’ve covered all that I can possibly think of covering and in doing so I think that it is time to get on with doing other things that involve being cool and relaxed, and I will do it all with the greatest of style. No one will see it coming and it’ll just happen in ways unprecedented and majestic, and all of that will then lead to other things and I’ll just get on with my life in a way that implies the getting on with my life, but… yeah.

So anyway, I’m cool and so on and so forth and you get the idea, so I’ll now stop.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:37:63

I don’t know why I wrote this. However, I do know that it’s pretty bland.
