Other End of the Bend

Same road and same bend as this one, but from a different point.

I think that from this point of view the bend seems sharper. It probably has a lot to do with the sense of distance given by the relative straightness of the road in this section.

I also like how the vegetation contrasts against the road. It’s a rather sudden shift in feel and colour, I think.

This is my submission into the ninety-third Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Morning“. I’m not sure as to how apparent it is that this photo was taken in the morning. It’s quiet, though this area likely often is.

I think there’s a certain tone to it that might come through only due to its being a scene of the morning, however.

The challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This one is Leya. Amy hosts the next one.

I recommend giving the challenges a go and seeing how you interpret each theme. I also recommend checking out what other people are doing to meet the challenges.

I hope you enjoy.

Galah in the Grass

This was taken whilst walking around a few days ago.

I don’t often get to see galahs so I was quite careful in getting close when getting close to the small group of which this one was a part. Unfortunately at one point I fell backwards which led to the galahs flying away, but I did get a few photos I thought were pleasant, such as this one.

All this shows is a galah eating, but something about it feels playful to me. Maybe it’s the way the galah is positioned. Maybe it has to do with it being partially obscured by the grass.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 41: Cool Breeze

There is only so much time but that is not something that right now needs to be covered. What needs to be covered is the two parts of my body that comprise the region known as the hands.

Well, there are more parts than that that comprise hands and I need to not cover them as they really are quite warm right now, but already I’m off on a tangent, but that is due to my once more trying to buy time until I reach whatever it is that I want to cover. Not sure if I’ll get there of course, but there is only one way to find out. That is something that I probably say far too often, but for some reason it feels like it should be said more often, though maybe not in written format. Revealing far too much of myself with those words. Or perhaps I’m not revealing much at all. Hard to say in this day and age, when I think about it, though thinking is not much of what I’m doing at the present time.

Anyway, I’m clearly trying to take up space and it is rather apparent to me, but perhaps not to you. Maybe this will read fine, but I don’t know. I really don’t know. I’m probably overthinking the challenge of writing this morning. I think I need to let go a bit more. I need to relax. I need to unwind and let the words come through naturally. Need to think a little less and let that subconscious take over and guide all the words toward visibility. If I do that, then perhaps I won’t; worry so much about what I’m trying to write, though I don’t even know what it is that I am trying to write.

Maybe I’ve burned out again. Not really sure right now. The only way to get through burning out right now, however, is with writing. That’ll help. That will get me to the other side and into the cool breeze of which I so desperately crave. Hopefully the breeze isn’t too cool. Need a little bit of warmth in it. Well, actually, I don’t want much warmth in it. I just don’t want it to be cold. So long as it isn’t cold, then I’m happy. Just needs to be cool enough. Once I’m through this sensation that I probably don’t have, I will feel the breeze and glide through the rest of the day on the smoothness of which I am so readily ready to traverse.

That sounds like a good idea, though maybe I am not feeling as though I’m burned out and perhaps instead it’s just that, after a few nights of not enough sleep followed by one night of good sleep I’m still feeling tired and need multiple nights in a row where the sleep is good and long enough to make sure that my ability to function a little better than usual is much more fully realised. That would be a good thing, I think. However, even if it doesn’t happen, so long as I am able to function in any way, shape or form, then that is a good day. Not an excuse to not look after myself; just a realisation of the small variety.

Pretty sure I realised that a long time ago, but right now it feels like a new realisation, though it will feel as such the next time, and the next time, and so on and so forth until I realise that it’s not a realisation but a reminder to myself to keep on going, and so should you all. If you can, keep on going. If you can’t, then do your best to keep on going. Better yourself and help your community.

Now, onto something else. I think I need to get back to hoping for that cool breeze, but then again I shouldn’t hope for it. Well, maybe I should. Maybe it is a good idea to hope for the breeze, but I cannot summon it unless I am referring to a metaphorical form of the breeze. I guess I could get a fan and a bunch of ice and use them in some sort of combination, but that would be cheating and I think I am leaning more to the metaphorical than the actual form of a combination of a breeze and coolness.

How strong would the breeze be? Should it be a strong or a gentle breeze? It needs to be a cathartic breeze; that much is certain at the moment. However, in the next moment that certainty may be questioned (and it rightly should be [or perhaps not]) and once more I will need to reconfigure the way forward so as to leave the ashen land and usher in a place full of the views that I s desperately crave to have once more in my life.

If this continues to shift around, then who am I to try and grasp it and make sense of the whole thing? Perhaps it should remain as something that shifts and changes. It will settle in its own time and I can’t force that, and perhaps that is fine. Perhaps it is fine to sometimes let things carry you along rather than try to force them into a form or shape that works best. There needs to be a knowing of when and when not to do these things. There needs to be a learning to as to make the best decisions, and perhaps I really an not burned out right now. Perhaps it really is just the being tired due to not enough good sleeps in a row.

Still, I should just keep on writing and then try and let the subconscious take over so as to have whatever this is come out and be a bit more… well, whatever it is that it should be. I don’t know yet. I think I will have to wait and see.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 12:14:44

Inane rambling that right now I’m pretty happy with, but who knows what the future holds?

I think my subconscious did take over at one point, but I was also aware of my thinking about what I was writing. I think.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 653: Fresh Rant About Customers

I probably should have started this earlier, but there was a bit less drive than usual and work has been a bit heavier than usual.

I guess the new normal for work is overly busy, but today really is a harsh one. It’s getting in the way of my ability to procrastinate on doing work in order to work on this more, which I guess is not what I’m getting paid for, but… well, I’ve no excuses other than the one that, after enough thinking about the whole thing, will be so ingenious that no one will be able to doubt its strength and ability to convince and then I’ll be free to do what I want and paid more than enough to survive and get along with getting on.

Well, that is of course the dream and it is good to have the dream, so I guess I’ll just disappear back into the dream. If that is where I want to be, then there is where I will be until my lunch break is over. Once my lunch break is over it is the returning of the customers and their voices and their gnashing of their teeth and that is something that I’d much rather avoid, for there are only so many times you can say the same thing over and over again until you are resisting the urge to tell customers to read what is in front of them and instead of calling us, thinking about what it means so that they can understand that what is in front of them is clear enough to be giving them the answer to the questions that they are currently asking.

It really is one of those days where pain rules supreme, but this isn’t the pain of physicality; this is the pain of mind. This is the day where my patience is being tested far more than usual. I’d much rather not have to deal with this right now, but as some people would say, at least I have a job. Despite having to deal with customer abuse and aggression far too frequently, at least I have a job. Even though I have to deal with being yelled at and people getting angry at me for their not paying attention, it’s good to have a job. Hell, maybe some customers are right: even though I cop a lot of unwarranted crap from customers and even though they’ll sometimes think it’s okay to tell me that I’m bad at my job because someone else didn’t follow the rules that we’ve got set out at the moment, I don’t actually have to deal with any of that at all.

I’ve been told by customers that I don’t have it bad. Well, customer service is a job where you get to spend a lot of time treated poorly, but apparently that’s not bad. Apparently that’s fine.

Still, some customers are wonderful and appreciate your trying to help them. Those customers make work easier.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:23:49

Slow time, angry writing.

I’m surprised as to how much most customers staunchly unwilling to read and then call up and start taking it out on both myself and the people I work with.

I think that until an overwhelming shift away from this shitty kind of behaviour happens, the issue can’t be overstated.

Nine Years of Stupidity Hole

In the time since Stupidity Hole began it has been updated on four devices I’ve owned as well as more that belonged to an office, a hostel and a university. Since Stupidity Hole started I’ve had three jobs (third still going), a relationship begin and end, another relationship begin a few years later, a few new friendships and many failed ones.

Despite how unlikely it seemed toward its end, I finished a bachelor of science majoring in marine science. Now UNSW keep trying to sell me stuff.

I still make music (though not as much as I’d like) as well as do photography, and my gaming and reading comes and goes in cycles. I get to co-run and write for Culture Eater, which is something I enjoy quite a bit. I haven’t been on a lengthy bushwalk for a while and it has been longer since I last did parkour. I want to get back into doing those more often. I also want to get back into drawing.

Occasionally I think about all the blogs that have fallen by the wayside. I think about people that I’ve followed and how they’re now gone. Sometimes I think about why they stopped and why I’ve continued on.

I do feel as though I need to go through everything here and clean it up a bit. I’m pretty sure last year I said I’d do so. I’m thinking of taking down some things as I don’t feel they should be here anymore, though considering my track record it’ll be a while before that happens, but I digress.

I think early on I decided not to celebrate Stupidity Hole‘s anniversaries, but nine years is a long time. Not as long as ten, but certainly longer than three. In that time I’ve been through both a lot and not much. There has been a fair bit of hurt and sadness, a lot of introspection, all that kind of stuff. There has also been a lot of joy and happiness. I can still remember most of it (I think).

Even though there were also some gaps before Stupidity Hole began, I’ve been doing the blog thing for fifteen years now. Whilst my previous blogs ran for a few years (only closing due to their hosts ending and my inaction on moving them elsewhere), Stupidity Hole has continued for far longer than they did.

Aside from most of 2011, all of 2012 and most of 2013, Stupidity Hole has been a constant in my life. It’s not great by any measure, but despite my attempts to push for bettering my writing and photography I’m not overly fussed with how things have turned out. I don’t mind that this blog tangentialised into something I didn’t originally envision.

I’m pretty sure that at this point whilst writing on here I’ve burned out quite a few times (for various reasons), but I’ve always managed to keep pushing on. I enjoy doing what I do, and I’m glad that some people who come here get something out what what I share.

Here’s to nine years of Stupidity Hole.

Sunset View of Sydney CBD

When I switched from using my 60D to my 5D Mark IV, I’m fairly certain I was going to share at the very least a few more photos from the former before sharing only what was taken with the latter.

Instead of that I’ve only shared photos taken with the 5D Mark IV since. I think that at some point I decided not to go back to the 60D.

Anyway, here’s an early lucky shot I took when the 60D was new, way back in the far distant past of 2011 when I had less of an idea of what I was doing than I do now.

I had come out of Balls Head Reserve a few minutes prior and must’ve felt that the scene was something I wanted to capture, hence the photo.

I think my photography skills have improved in the time since I took this photo, but I’m pretty sure the desire to just capture something remains strong. However, I might be a bit more selective now, though only a little bit.

I think I did alright with the framing and capturing of the scene. I like that the clouds don’t feel as sharp as everything below them. I also like that they feel massive.

There’s a bit more angularity in this shot than I thought when I started writing about this photo, though not all of it is obvious.

Perhaps the vegetation is a bit too dark, but overall I think the photo holds a good light and colour balance.

Overall I find this photo relaxing to look upon.

On an unrelated note, it reminds me a bit of my life at the time I took this photo. It was very different and I’m glad I lived through that time, I’m happy to never relive it as I’m interested in being where and who I am now.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 40: The Galactic Ocean

The vast and open World Ocean presented itself and that was probably the best thing, for some of the time – not all of the time; only some – it was limitless and the possibility and potential that it presented was something far greater and far too difficult to try and quantify, and perhaps that was the best way, for it made potential seem far more limitless than it actually was.

It was easy to take to The World Ocean and explore its seemingly-infinite bounty. It was just as easy to be swallowed by its being and never return, though as the times changed this became less of a probability and more of a possibility. It was preferred that way for many, though not for all.

Of course, just as there were many people looking to explore The World Ocean, there were just as many fish that preferred it to remain unexplored by people. Whilst people were looking to just do their thing, or confer their industry upon the ocean’s body, the fish preferred not to become food for a being that they themselves may have considered as being unknowable. Thus they deigned it necessary to try and avoid people where possible, but people are craftier than they let on, regardless of how aware of their craftiness at any given moment they just so happen to be.

And so may fish went and spoke to other fish, who spoke to other ocean creatures, who spoke to other fish and so on in a long chain until the message of requesting could reach The Great Marlin, whom then passed a message along a chain until it reached The Great Sailfish, whom then returned a message, and so on and so forth so that both of these majestic creatures could discuss and formulate a plan to help protect the fish and by extension the other creatures of The World Ocean, upon which whom it was that the habitat of many ocean-dwelling organisms was conferred.

This messaging continued for a long time, for whilst people moved rapidly, The World Ocean remained far too great to easy explore, and so time was both of the essence and quite great. However, the impacts would start… impacting… the ability to have messages passed on, and so caution was needed with many movements so as to make sure that the messages got through as efficiently as possible.

It was a difficult thing to strategies with, but it did not deter and so eventually a plan was formulated to protect all forms of organisms within the great body of The World Ocean. Naturally this did not include humanity and its machinations unless they became more respectful of the environment on which they were impressing their presence and own form of nature.

There still had to be some waiting. The wait for the right moment for everything to be done so as to make sure that it all went without a hitch had to be experienced so as to make sure that the whole thing went down without a hitch. There was little, if any room for error. All it could take is one mistake and thus the whole plan would not properly come to fruition. At the same time, there still was room for hoping, though hoping for the best seemed like folly.

Eventually the right moment eventuated, and so the plan began.

The World Ocean seemed still. It seemed far too still. It was almost static, though this went unnoticed. Soon it seemed to swirl and swell, and gradually grow into a rage. It was a gradual shift, almost as though it wasn’t happening at all outside of the ever-present moment, in which nothing before or after existed.

The World Ocean kept on increasing in its rage and unsteadiness, and began to toss and turn and show a mere glimpse of its true ferocity, and so when the awareness of the danger dawned upon many a people out on the ocean, they did their best to make their way back to a shoreline distant, yet close, or at the very least brace themselves and do everything they could to whether what felt like the oncoming of an unexpected onslaught.

Of course this did little to diminish the situation and it seemed that, just like its size, The World Ocean’s power too was limitless. However, whilst this struck a great deal of terror and hopelessness into the hearts of many people on its body, the plan of the fish had nothing to do with this. The Great Sailfish and Great Marlin had decided on something else entirely, and this just so happened to be a byproduct of their move to defend themselves from the mysterious and unknowable human race and its far too dangerous encroachment on the saline organisms’ being and existence.

A strong, quaking sensation could be felt, though no land both above and underwater was cracking with the roaring of the earth. It was the sound of The World Ocean vibrating and rising, though not expanding.

Slowly, yet steadily it rose and lifted all the organisms that lived within its glorious body upward. It sent those people that were in it away and back to land, leaving them with a sense of relief, though also with a strong sense of being overwhelmed, for they had been from the sheer experience.

And so The World Ocean rose and lifted above the continents. It reoriented itself so it no longer appeared as though it was from a larger sphere and so, in its smaller and more condensed spheroid shape, took off and headed far away from Earth.

As for Earth, the now-exposed beds began to fill with water once more as a new ocean was borne.

For the fish, the search for a home free of human influence commenced. A home that would have minimal impact on its existing inhabitants when The World Ocean arrived. A home where The World Ocean would grow in unity and become The Galactic Ocean.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 21:32:06

This piece feels verbose and stupid, and I think it’s great.

The narrative flows a bit better than my usual writing, however.

Walls, Walls and a Ceiling Above

It’s been a while since I last wrote some poetry.

It is apparent that I have managed to not improve, which might be an achievement.

I think that the imagery is both specific and vague. Maybe.

I think I got a point across. Not sure what exactly, though I have an idea.

I hope you enjoy.

Walls, walls and a ceiling above
For now these are now more common occurrences
The freedom to explore scenery removed of others
Is not as readily available as expected
For caution rules more than ever
And precaution readily follows
And so walls and a ceiling must remain familiar
Until opportunity strikes
For another view to be reached
Though that time may be missed
As even looking might not reveal its visitation
Such is the way focus can blind
For caution must be heeded
And precaution verily so
Most actions require care and certainty
To reduce the chance of impact
If we are to continue moving
Then the walls must remain present
So that we can one day
Chase those views again

Good Old War: Broken Into Better Shape Review

This was the fifth album review I wrote for Cool Try.

I think that at the time I was pretty happy with what I wrote. Looking at it now makes me realise that it is far, far too short.

The reviews reads too much like a checklist. I really should have expanded much more on what I was saying. I don’t think I should have boldly proclaimed that the album was about love and heartbreak either. It’s quite possible that Broken Into Better Shape is about those things, but I’m not completely certain that those are the entirety of the album’s themes. Then again, it has been a while since I’ve listened to the album, so maybe those are all it is about.

I can remember a few moments from the album pretty well, which I think is a good thing. I should probably go listen to it again some time soon as I do remember it being quite enjoyable.

I fixed some spelling and spacing, but otherwise this is as it was.

Along with most of my review and interview work, this review is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I set up a Patreon to further develop Culture Eater as a source of good quality arts coverage from both ourselves and our contributors.

We’re looking at what we can give to supporters as we don’t want to set up a one way relationship, so suggestions are welcome. Podcast Eater is one of the things we’ve got going. We’ve recently switch to weekly releases and soon will be giving the patrons a bit more.

Please consider supporting, or at least sharing the Patreon page with others. Please also check out what our wonderful contributors are contributing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

“Tell me why my love has got a gun / aimed at my heart / I’m begging please just try and realise baby / I did my part”.

If the first lines aren’t a giveaway, this album is about love and heartbreak and possibly some of the happier times as well. I’m not entirely sure which takes dominance, but my money’s on heartbreak.

The album keeps a good flow and has a strong feel of slowing down and unwinding as it goes on.

I find it difficult to completely explain, but from the up-tempo opener “Tell me What you Want From me” to the relaxed, soft closer “Don’t Forget”, it really does feel like the whole album is winding down from something intense that happened before it began.

The vocals aren’t strong but this is beneficial to the music as they don’t run the risk of overpowering and taking all the attention.

Despite the lyrics being not the happiest for the most part, they are sung in a very upbeat manner. This makes them appropriate for the moods and tones of the songs which are quite light and airy in nature.

There’s a sense of familiarity all throughout Broken Into Better Shape.
I’m not sure why, but it feels like a lot of this has been done before.
However, the album is nice enough and it works well as a whole.
Despite the subject matter, it has a positive feel to it.
It’s certainly worth a listen.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 652: Frog Things

So there was this frog and it was sitting by a river, doing the things that a frog does. What it was doing seemed unknowable, but I imagine that with enough studying of the frog and its actions (as well as other frogs and also their actions in order to get a better idea of what frogs likely do when they do the things that they do) people would be able to know what it is that the frog was doing. If people knew what the frog was doing, then perhaps the unknowable would then become knowable which of course would be a great boon to knowing what it is that frogs do. At the very least it would be easier to make an inference regarding what it is that this frog was doing. That would probably be helpful and conducive to the study of frogs, which I believe falls under the scientific branch known as herpetology. Knowing more about the frog and what it is and isn’t doing would allow for people to make better-informed actions regarding when and when not to disturb a frog.

This frog did not want to be disturbed, but of course as the people who disturbed the frog did not know that it did not want to be disturbed due to not knowing enough about what it was and was not doing disturbed it, the frog had its desire to not be disturbed disrespected, which led to some modicum of displeasure as the frog wanted to be left alone to sit there and do the things that it wanted to do. Perhaps it wanted to keep those things unknown. It was difficult to tell, but the damage had been done and it was far too late to go back and undisturb the frog. The action had been completed and that was the end of that. It was now a part of that frog’s existence and there was nothing that it could do to change that. Just as much it was part of the lives of the disturbers also, and they too could not undo the disturbing that had been done.

And so the frog was airlifted by hand and raised to a position where communication with the people would be much easier.

With a great deal of vexation across the face of the frog, it did verily say to the people “Unhand me please, for I am looking to be left alone and do the things for which at the moment only I can know, and this process has been rather interrupting and I may have to resume from the very beginning of my doing of the things that I was doing”, to which one of the people responded “I am rather sorry, for I was not aware of your doing of the things to which I know not of now but may in the future”, followed by the lowering of the frog.

And so the frog sat and recommenced doing its frog things.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:39:05

I think this is wonderfully silly and rambling.

If I spent time on this outside of the challenge’s constraints, then I imagine it would would read much better. Still, rather happy with how it turned out.
