MONO: Nowhere Now Here Review

This is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I are working on growing Culture Eater, so please check it out and see what other people are contributing.

There’s a few galleries from the photographers helping us out, as well as words from other contributors.

Anyway, here’s the review.

MONO: A band with a lengthy career in music, which is more than what I can say for myself.

Never the purveyors of technical skill-oriented complexity MONO have certainly crafted their fair share of great, moving pieces. Nowhere Now Here, their latest effort is of course another MONO banger.

Oftentimes MONO don’t go for the easy payoff. Whilst there is a great deal of rising and falling in their music, MONO give more than a build to another big dumb rock ending. A lot of the layering and textures have an intricacy to them that isn’t immediately obvious. In realising them the climaxes become so much more climactic and the payoff much more earned.

It’s more about the journey and the way it gets to the ending rather than the ending itself. However, the finality of each song still is important. MONO built to the closing moments and as such those endings are as much a part of the movement of the song as everything preceding them.

Whilst strong on melody, the songs don’t seem focused on that aspect. The focus seems to be more on how each part comes together to form the whole. As previously mentioned, there’s a lot of layering and textures. It’s clear that a lot of care has gone into making sure everything works together for the songs. However, that’s not to say that Nowhere Now Here is flat or emotively lacking. In many ways the album is quite dramatic and sweeping.

In part this come through due to MONO working with Steve Albini. Nowhere Now Here is a very dry-sounding record.  Whilst beneficial for more sparse music, here it brings forth a greater liveliness to the songs. The quiet vs. loud dynamics stand out much more from each other without feeling like a flat shift between. The drums sound so much harder and bigger whilst remaining firmly a part of the songs. The guitars sound like they’re raging and ragged when loud, but also remain a good fit among the various instruments.

Anything outside of the guitar, bass and drums stands out a lot more as a strong element of the songs. Often they enhance the sweeping nature of the songs, add more texture and melody and help fill out the space whilst also sitting a little bit behind the main instrumentation.

The drama of their music is readily apparent, and whilst there’s times of little space, Nowhere Now Here seldom (if ever) becomes claustrophobic.

If there is one issue that affects Nowhere Now Here, it is that often the songs go for longer than they should. The slow burn works well and helps a few of the songs reach their climactic peak quite well. However, at times the songs peter out before they hit the closing moments. Whilst MONO sound confident in what they’re doing, there is no reason as to why the songs could’ve been a bit tighter. There’s a leanness to their running but they hit a point where they bloat. The songs could have come to an ending point that would have been as natural whilst saving time. Instead, whilst aware of it, the “hit” for the songs gets a little less impactful over time. That said, the bloat is not a deal breaker.

What MONO have really done well is avoid the trite, easy reach for emotional catharsis. The music is working so much harder and generally veers away from the easy grab. There’s a genuine sense of payoff that’s difficult to replicate without the effort, and as such MONO sound like a band putting in a lot of work. Nowhere Now Here is flawed in parts, but this doesn’t stop the album from being a great work.

Rain Trails

It’s been a long time since I last took a photo of this kind.

The last time was almost two years ago, if I am remembering time in a correct fashion.

I think that this photo show that I’m still at about the same level as I was the last time I took this kind of photo.

I like the water’s form in this one. I like how it looks like strands hanging downward.

I hope you enjoy.

Something About Grazing Myself

So I was just coming into my place from the backyard as I was out there to look at my plants. It had been raining and I wanted to check to see if anything had sprouted that I had not noticed prior to my going out there at this point.

I step inside and slip due to lack of complete traction. Didn’t fall over, but for some reason I swung my arms outward away from me and then slammed them into the door frame. Grazed my arms near my wrists. Really hurt.

It was rather painful, let me tell you. Yes, I know that there are other things that are significantly more painful than this, but this is my world to dramatise and dramatise it I will.

Well, there’s not really much to dramatise with this one, now that I think about it.

I thought I could have turned this into something vaguely profound, but I can’t right now as I’m lazy, so I guess the moral of the story is:

When in times of duress, always mark the rook.

Sunset at the Drying Cooks

Another sunset shot, but this time taken whilst crossing over The Cooks River.

Some strong colours in this one, I think.

The stillness of the water captures the sky well, and the contrast between the brightness of the sunset and the dark of the area around the river helps bring focus to certain details, I think.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 520: Another lengthy Sentence

Alright, here we go, getting ready for what is ahead, but I’m in an awkward position and the only block around the block is the sphere in which I shall ride unto the majestic majesty of the horizon as the fish revolve around an orb that is not a sphere but still wholly mine and I know that if I look into my own eyes, there shall be someone staring back, but this is of course only a form of conjecture in which I shake and rumble and lead toward the grove of oranges whilst we retell all that is and was, but then again maybe I am only repeating myself in indistinct terms that I found by rummaging through the rubbish and looking for a new thing, but that new thing was not mine to find as the people in my area only throw out the old even though the old is still perfectly acceptable most of the time and not just some of the time, which makes me wonder as to how I shall be perceived when I reach an age known as old, because this is something that I cannot easily tell, as I am not currently old, although those around me would either agree or disagree, depending on their point of view which is something that I am not aware of as I cannot read minds, but if I was to be able to make myself aware of their points of view, which I am able to make myself aware of, then I would make myself aware via the process of pursuing this method of making myself aware, but I would of course need to make sure that I would be ready which is not something that is easy to do when your whole hat is held hostage by those that wish to harm hats in a way that suggests harm and violence, and many other a thing that is scary to those that seek the peace in our hearts unless the case is that the heart has been pierced and corrupted by the evils of the world that tease and tantalise us in horrible manners so long as we allow for these horrors to creep up to us in unconscionable ways as we are always caught off-guard, which is to say that our guard is down if only because we assume that it is up and become complacent in our actions and thus we end up in situations that we do not expect to end up in as they are always ones that are far more subtle and insidious than we could ever realise until we look at them in retrospect when we feign shock and outrage at something that we could have prevented, or at least that is what I am saying at the moment, but really this has gone on for far too long and I should end the sentence somewhere around here, lest it run for more words, thus extending the sentence.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:43:91

I’ve slowed down.

Hadn’t done one of these long, rambling sentences for a while and so I decided to do one and this was the result, as you can see.

Some parts I like. Some parts could be better. And so on.

Written at work.

Emergent Bins

I’m glad that my place has tiles for its entryway to my front door.

It rained yesterday and as such the surface of the entryway to my front door was rather reflective.

I saw something in a video that I wanted to try out and this is the result. This was somewhat-“unexpected” as I was expecting something kind of different, but I’m pretty happy with the result.

I like the effect the tiles have on the reflection, as well as the clarity of the reflection itself.
It’s not a perfect reflection, but it carries what its reflecting quite well, I think.

On one side the bins seem to be emerging from the grass, but on the other they are sitting on the grass.

I’m sharing this photo as part of The Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

This challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This week is hosted by Leya and next week’s will be hosted by Amy.

I hope you enjoy.

Satellite Among Cirrocumulus

A photo taken from my backyard.

The afternoon saw what appeared to be a vivid sunset approaching. Alas, the fence was too large to be able to capture its full splendour. Though, that said the houses surely would have obscured the colourful display regardless.

There were plenty of nice clouds above and so many a photo I took, with this of course being but one of them, and so on.

What I like about this photo is how small it makes the moon appear. The clouds don’t look massive, but the moon seems so small in comparison.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s photo challenge.

Leanne’s now merged two photo challenges that she runs. The theme for this one is “The Moon”.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Jarboe: The Cut of the Warrior Review

This is also on Culture Eater.
My colleague and I are working on growing Culture Eater, so please check it out and see what other people are contributing.

Anyway, here’s the review.

A few weeks ago Jarboe released a new set of recorded songs. The release goes by the name of The Cut of the Warrior.

Measured, almost meditative tracks comprise the bulk of The Cut of the Warrior. There’s a strong sense of the spiritual which makes sense as the album is essentially Jarboe exploring her relationship with Buddhism.

As such the album is conceptual, but the ideas are not impenetrable. Having an understanding of certain parts of Buddhism will go a long way to extending the experience. However, there’s a lot to grab onto from someone unfamiliar with the album’s explorations. Essentially the explorations are inviting more than they are barring, but they don’t stop at the surface.

Most songs seem to be based around lengthy note patterns. The melodies gradually unfurl, but not in a typical sense. They unfurl in the sense that they gradually draw you in with their repetition. There are subtle changes and alterations in each track that become indistinct except in retrospect. Jarboe made songs that keep you in the moment and they do a good job of doing so.

More direct sections appear, but their use usually means you don’t notice until, again, in retrospect.

In a sense The Cut of the Warrior is much like a journey. You remember a lot about where you’ve been and how you got there, but a lot of things are blurred until you think over what you’ve been through.

The remixes / interpretations are an interesting inclusion. Whilst they mirror certain tracks, they still fit in with the mood and tone of the bulk of The Cut of the Warrior. The remixes / interpretations sound much more like their own things separate from the original. The ideas are the same, but presented in a different form. As such they feel more like a part of The Cut of the Warrior rather than extra material.

Jarboe’s voice is, of course, in fine form. Few artists out there are capable of giving life to their words in such an organic, textured way. Jarboe does so and does so well.

On The Cut of the Warrior Jarboe employs lyrics sparingly. Of the few uses, only one song has lyrical clarity, but it makes sense as to why and it doesn’t feel out of place. Often the vocals seem to be for wordless expressiveness. They blend into the music and become another part of the experience. At the same time the vocals

Whilst The Cut of the Warrior starts off “light”, on the surface it grows in intensity the longer it runs. There seems to be a descent into something… well, not darker, per se, but more intense. A deepening as it proceeds. The sounds become heavier and Jarboe seems to adopt a heavier tone. At the same time the album becomes more meditative and trance-like.

That is to say that The Cut of the Warrior isn’t just one thing. “Looking” at it from different angles rewards in different ways in the same way that a physical piece of art can be different from different angles. Something like this could easily sound artificial and superficial in really horrible ways, so it’s a real credit to Jarboe that the album doesn’t.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 519: I need to do these earlier in the day

Hardly working hard, and yet the need for sleep is needed due to the exhaustion I managed to give myself.

Working with a new keyboard on a new computer is a weird experience. I need to get a different keyboard, maybe. I like this one, but it’s just not as good for me as I want. I guess that says more about a refusal to adapt more than it does about the keyboard, but, well, you know…

Writing, writing and more writing needs to be done in the next few minutes. Well, maybe,. Maybe I just need to work more on going to bed or something. Maybe I need to work on resting up and recharging so I’m energised for tomorrow and therefore can take on THE WORLLLLLLD!

Well, that would be nice, but tomorrow is a work day in which very little shall get done as I’m a lazy person. A lazy, lazy person.

I think I need to spend a little less time writing at night. Well, I don’t often do it anyway.

I think that I’m looking to fill space, but realistically all this is doing is filling time.

I have the desire and I have the need, but I think that I’m procrastinating a little too much.

Outside the thunder cracks, and before the lighting would illuminate the space underneath. I was out there at one point and now I am inside, writing away for some reason. I don’t know as to what I’m writing about, but the only way to tell is in the produce that is the result of the typing.

The rain has only been heavy for short periods. It is coming in waves. It attacks, then it relents. With its withdrawal the heat comes back to creep in and is only removed once the rain falls once more. The heat is not necessarily unpleasant, but of course it is carrying a lot of what feels like humidity, and as such it is not something that I want to bear at the moment.

I’m merely whinging, though. The sound of the rain certainly is not one that is unpleasant. That said I must admit that I wish it was a little louder so it could lull me to sleep. Lull me slowly and then I could pass out and sleep soundly until the morning in which I would inevitably wake up, as it would be the morning and thus it would be the time to wake up and get the things done so that they are done and done when they need to be done, or something.

If this doesn’t make much sense, then don’t worry; I theorise that it has a lot to do with the desire of my body to stick to this chair as much as it can.

It’s neither pleasant, nor unpleasant. It’s just a thing. Could be worse, I guess. Could be sticking to the wall.

Besides which, the chair and I are almost one and the same.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:42:13

Maybe this was too normal. I don’t know.

Written at home.

On Australia Day

The morning is carrying a dew in the air, except there is no dew in the air and instead the air is bloated with heat as the heat descends upon the earth and carries its way around the areas of the suburban expanse that makes up the majority of Sydney.

Of course I get to avoid the brunt of all of this as the place in which I am currently inside and residing is full of air conditioning and thus the air conditioning is doing its job but conditioning the air and thus allowing a modicum of comfort.

Personally, I’d rather the heat and a fan. At least then I’m not deceiving my body.

This is something pointless to consider, however, as there are other things to worry about. Today is the day of Australia. It is a day where a bunch of people will get drunk and be disrespectful, but if challenged on the notion that maybe there should be some sort of Indigenous remembrance and recognition, especially in regards to how Australia began as a nation, then many will cry afoul due to it being disrespectful, or something.

Today is going to be a day where at work we will speak to what will likely be a lot of drunk, or soon to be drunk people wanting to find out if we’re open today. People who claim they care about Australia Day but in reality only care about remaining in their bubble where nothing wrong has happened in Australia’s history.

This may seem a bit cynical, but I think that it’s much more cynical to pretend that Australia Day doesn’t signify a day that lead to the decline of the Indigenous.

It’s a more complex issue than it probably should be.

I don’t necessarily agree with having the day removed entirely, or having its name changed to Invasion day. What I would put forward is that Australia Day should be treated as a day of remembrance of our history, and not something throwaway. Actually something ingrained into Australia Day.

But that still might be too much for some, because the idea that maybe, just maybe Australia’s history should be acknowledged in something greater than a token gesture is something they find deeply offensive.
