SUMAC: Love in Shadow Review

Anyway, here’s the review.

—–

Not too many bands have enough studio albums released to be able to cover each year of their being active. SUMAC are on their fourth in as many years. It is commendable that SUMAC have released as much as they have in as little time, but does Love in Shadow, their most recent show that they still are progressing?

SUMAC almost jump immediately into the proceedings on “The Task”. The first track wastes little time, drives hard and and flows smoothly up until its almost-sudden shift into something entirely different, highlighting the biggest problem with Love in Shadow; at the start there’s a lot of unnecessary bloat.

It’s possible that SUMAC needed the entirety of “The Task” to get across the entirety of what they were exploring. If that is the case, “The Task” still could have been over multiple tracks. There is no need for it to be the lengthy slab that it is. The song sounds quite clearly like two different songs on one track. The contrast suggests two different sides, but again, “The Task” didn’t need to be one chunk. The contrast still would have worked.

If it is indeed the case that SUMAC needed the entirety or “The Task” as one thing, then that suggests that they needed to rethink the approach from the beginning but decided against doing so. What makes the length of “The Task” even more glaring an issue is that, all things considered, much of the rest of the album does a better job of getting itself across despite length. Opening the album with a bloated track is problematic.

Outside of this the songs see a better interplay between their varying sections. SUMAC lock into each other well and whilst some sections overstay their welcome, the band do a good job of making everything work. Noise sections make sense between parts that are more linearity and weight, so to speak. Alternations between faster and slower, more menacing sections come with ease. Most parts naturally link which in turn provides the songs a decent narrative flow.

The vocals are deep more than they are abrasive. There’s a distinct lack of clarity to them and as such they work well as a sound. Furthermore, the vocals become less about what the lyrics are and more about their mood. Had they been clear, they would have been distracting.

SUMAC have learned a few things over their currently brief tenure and they’re putting those things to good use. Love in Shadow is in many ways an expansive record. There’s a drive and linearity to it, but it feels quite open and wide, and there’s still improvisational elements. SUMAC play well, they embrace textural elements much more and are leaning away from pummeling as it becomes less a necessary compensation for their ability.

There are also some choices that suggest that SUMAC need to work on refinement.

Love in Shadow is quite lean in a few places but there are others with bloat. The album didn’t need to be over an hour long and would have gained much from a shorter run time. Whilst it is more experimental than prior albums, the only way in which Love in Shadow is challenging is through its length. That aside, the album is exploratory in a wonderful way and it does carry itself differently to many other heavy albums.

You can hear Love in Shadow here.

Lens-artists photo challenge #14: Building Reflects on its Surroundings

For part of yesterday’s afternoon I was in Bondi Junction.
It was an intentional visit as there were photos that I wanted to take.

Here’s a building that appears to have its walls made mostly out of “Windows“.

I think that you can get a partial idea of what the surrounding urban area is like.

I like how well the windows reflect on this building, although I imagine that they would have appeared to do better had the sky been clear.

This is my submission into the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge for this week.

This challenge is hosted by four people and cycles weekly:

Week 1 – Patti of https://pilotfishblog.com/

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya of https://lagottocattleya.wordpress.com/

Week 3 – Amy of https://shareandconnect.wordpress.com/

Week 4 – Tina of https://travelsandtrifles.wordpress.com/

This week is hosted by Leya and next week’s will be hosted by Amy.

I suggest following and considering participating, but also seeing how other people have responded to the photo challenge from The Daily Post ending.

Anyway, I hope you  enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 493: Stare out the Window

I was able to stare out the window of the apartment that I am currently in. I was able to stare out of it and I guess now I am able to attempt to stare out of it, but it has fogged up quite a bit.

There is a difference in temperature between the inside of this apartment and its immediate outside.

It is raining and it is cold, but in here it is warm. It is warm and significantly drier than it is outside, where it is cold and wet due to the rain and the temperature being lower than a temperature that some may consider as being a temperature that could be classified as warm.

I get to be partially wet, but hopefully the warmth dries the parts of my clothes that could be classified as being that of a wet quality, or texture, depending on how you want to look at the situation.

Then again, if you don’t want to look at the situation, then that too is fine. Well, it’s fine for the time being, at least.

There has been much writing and work through the stuff that I am working through today. I have moved to a different location for a few hours and am currently in an apartment. It is raining outside. Well, at least I think it is raining outside. The windows have fogged up and so I cannot see what the weather is like at the present moment.

There has been much writing and it is a good thing as the rain seems to be a good motivator. However, when I say that there has been much writing, I am referring to the past few days. The rain has not been a factor until today. Well, it has not been a factor in regards to my  productivity. Today it has and thus today has feature a deal of work that could be described as  that has been conducted, but it has been relegated to the processing of the photos of which I have taken over the past two weeks.

Maybe it is the past one week. Not entirely sure about the specific time frame. It has spanned about seven days. That such I do know.

This is not something of which I need to consider at the moment.

What I do need to consider is the fact that it is raining outside and soon I will need to once more go back out into the weather. I will need to consider my approach. I will need to make sure that my approach is carefully considered. I will approach the weather that is outside, as opposed to inside and there will be an approaching of sorts, if you will.

I will step outside and make my way out into the outside world and embrace the weather with some sort of protection in order to remain as dry as I possibly can. I will do it, but first there is a dinner fast approaching.

Not a bad speed.
Kind of cohesive, good rhythm.

Needs improvement, blah blah blah.

To and From the City

Across an expanse of rail, two vehicles are witnessed.

They are in motion, carrying passengers to various destinations based on where they are and are not allowed to go.

I wonder as to how this area would appear if all the tracks had “Trains” on them.

I think that in this photo the city looks kind of ominous, but doesn’t feel ominous.

I like the level of detail coming through on the trains and the tracks. I think that it really helps to give the area a lot of definition.

Leanne Cole recently has started a new photo challenge.

I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit into the challenge.

You can find the challenges here.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Orbital: Monsters Exist Review

A couple of years ago Orbital got back together.
Stupid joke that incorporates the title of the album, Monsters Exist, here.

There’s a thread of indecision that runs through Monsters Exist. Whilst the album is comprised of light dance tracks, there are some that are darker in sound. Orbital were influenced by the world around them and it really comes through. The album sounds like they tried to find a happy medium for the songs but it’s not quite an even listen.

There’s a bit of a forced pull in the first few tracks before the album finds balance. “Monsters Exist” opens with a dark, aggressive kind of sound. “Hoo Hoo Ha Ha”, a wonderfully cheesy song featuring wonky brass follows “Monsters Exist”. Then the album gets more aggressive again in “The Raid”, then light once more for “P.H.U.K”. The lighter tracks are aggressive in a way, but they’re tonally off for the start. Still, whilst “P.H.U.K” could have been shorter, the tracks do work and the shift is not too jarring. It’s just a bit at odds with the rest of the album as the transitions aren’t as smooth.

Orbital have made a lot of music that makes you think and on Monsters Exist that is no exception. This time around the message feels a bit more direct. It’s easier to work out what Orbital were trying to get across as the songs themselves are a bit more direct, but there is still room for subtlety. There’s enough if you want to think about the meaning, but if you just want to enjoy the music then you’re not going to have trouble.

Monsters Exist progresses well enough from “P.H.U.C.K” onward, weaving through heavier and lighter songs fairly smoothly whilst embracing some interesting approaches as well as some quite familiar ones. The album could have ended at “The End is Nigh”, which would have been fitting. Instead one more track follows.

“There Will Come a Time” is interesting in that it does a good job of closing some of the album whilst almost reaching “Gamemaster” levels of cheese. The song is mostly minimal in sound and has a good balance between the light and heavy. It flows really well and has a fair number of more ambient sounds. The use of Brian Cox’s words and voice don’t clash with the song and inspire thought in a good way. They’re quite humbling, but due to the music they end up coming off as melodramatic. It can take away a lot of intent from the words and be detrimental to the message. However, considering how all the tracks prior progress, the use is appropriate. In a way it’s life-affirming and it’s not overbearing.

Some artists reunite and release stuff that is bad and some reunite and release good. Orbital fall into the latter. They could have churned out an album really quickly but instead they waited and got something out that was good, if a bit flawed in places. Monsters Exist has some issues, but they’re pretty minor. It’s put together well and makes for a pleasing listen.

Culture Eater Launches

So I’ve been meaning to get this up for a few days, but stuff has gotten in the way.

After around a month of preparation, a zine by the name of Culture Eater has launched.

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing how the new site develops.
It will be slow going at first, but over time my colleague and I are hoping to make it grow.

It can be found here.

Also popped a link up on the side.

Anyway, that’s all for now.

Lens-Artist Photo Challenge #13: Large-reaching Sea Spray

More sea spray.

This one was massive in its reach.
There’s probably locations out there with larger reaches, but I think that this one still had quite the reach.

It almost got to the top of the cliff face.

I had to “Look Up” to be able to properly see it from where I was.

I like the way the spray spreads in this shot, and I also like how it blends better with the sky the farther its reach.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 492: Once more a Shift

A push and a pull, a snap and a drag and there is a rising and a falling.

This is all happening right now. Right now!

Can you see, can you hear, can you  feel the way that the rhythm is pulsing in and out of sync with itself as it slowly disintegrates and becomes something else entirely?

The work transforms itself into something new entirely. It looks toward the horizon and reaches out there, smothering all that is underneath whilst something slides and glides on top.

The mountains crumble and grind down into dust over a time far longer than we can experience, but it is as sudden as the sky passing toward something else entirely.

The work is transforming itself whilst remaining resolutely the same as it will be and has been. There are no surprises but there are also wonderful things to experience.

The blade is dull, but it still cuts its way through swathes of land and it reaches far beyond what can be fathomed.

Clouds spread and collide, coalesce and split apart, trying to make sense of the whole situation that they are not indebted to. They cannot see underneath for that which was is now not, but there is still the reach of the hand from beyond the thicket, trying to crawl on out and get moving toward a new land, a new horizon, a new ocean and the kiss of salt in the air.

Rising and falling and following on through, rolling into a tension of dizziness and a numismatic illusion is all that is set forward into motion, but pushing onward and outward with little to no effort this spreads and consumes, but it leaves no trace of its being there ever.

Then the space opens, it all clears up and it is as though nothing ever was affected. There is a peace that can only be cradled, but it is there. it must be cherished for there is no telling for how long it will last. There is no telling for how long until the march of the grind comes in once more and begins to erode all around it, looking for something that encroaches and ascends whilst also descending toward the goal, the target, the intended recipient of the delivery.

Ringing out and holding true, it is uneasy, but it is mercurial and confident in its ability to cleanse away the engulfing reach, but there is a pull, there is an act that expresses recalcitrant themes and there is more than enough to allow for the second-guessing.

There is more than enough space and there are once more plants reaching for the sky and new mountains are born from the husks of the old world. It is all shifting and changing. Names move toward something new, populations migrate to new locations and the peace is as tranquil as it is temporary.

A new dawn is experienced every morning and the days reach toward something that indicates once more a shift.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 06:46:62

Maybe abstract? Maybe?

I think that I was going more for feel than I was anything else. I think.

Written at work.

Macdonaldtown During the Evening

People walk toward the exit, their train having let them off here so they could approach their next destination.

Not sure about the light balance but I do like how the photo turned out.

I think that there’s a good deal of detail and I like how urban the photo feels.

I also like that the dark almost makes this feel like a contained area.

I hope you enjoy.

Third Attempt Today

This is my third attempt at writing today. My third attempt. I don’t want to write about something that happened to one of my colleagues as it a bit of a sad thing (he’s fine, but it’s something that affects him outside of work). At the moment I don’t want to write something that is sad. I want tow rite something that is celebratory of life, so here goes:

Shit things happen all the time, but it’s part of what makes life worth living.

Well, that’s all I have at the moment.

Soon the day of work will be over and I will be making my way home. My thoughts are on my friend who is experiencing something that is pretty saddening. He will be fine once it all passes, but what he has to deal with is one of those sobering things.

At the end of the day,. all I can do is console him as much as I can, so long as he wants consolation.

Well, I can also listen to him and continue being his friend.

Sometimes I wonder as to what the point of it all is. It seems that we want to find meaning where there is none at times, but that doesn’t mean that the pursuit of this kind of non-existent knowledge is necessarily a bad thing. It can really make life a lot more enjoyable than we would like to believe at times.

The universe is an uncaring thing and there probably isn’t any meaning, but we should still go out there and experience things and live our lives to the fullest where we can. There are times when we should rest on our laurels. You need a break form time to time. However, that doesn’t mean that we should try and live full lives.

There’s too much time spent working on jobs we don’t like and whilst this is sometimes a necessary thing, it’s too easy to spend the rest of our entirety being in places we don’t like and then end up living lives we don’t want to live.

There’s not always room to do what you want, but you have to where you can, so long as it does not come to the harm of others around you.

That’s pretty much all I have at the moment.
