Toward the City, Toward the Night

Another Long Exposure of a train heading to the city from Erskineville.

I think that there’s a nice softness to the colours.

I like the sense of motion from the train despise there being a sense of stillness.

I like that not everything has enough light on it to reveal full detail.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 255: The Big Connection

Today I am attempting to get this writing done in under five minutes because I can and mostly because I have very little time left on my lunch break before I have to get back to work and face the calls with a fiery will of justice and an iron resolve of hope that the day will end soon, but it won’t and the customer will keep on calling in droves, asking me questions that I will answer with certainty, but I will secretly wish that they wouldn’t ask and I would be left to my own devices whilst getting paid for being left to my own devices.

Anything is possible within the realm of dreaming!

My mouth is burning as I made a really hot pasta. It’s a nice kind of burning as the chilies were fresh and delicious and I’m not sweating like crazy. Still, I do kind of wish that the chili were hotter, as if they were hotter it would be a more intense experience. With that being said, I’d also probably need a much better tolerance than I have now if I were to be able to handle hotter chilies. I used to have a better tolerance. Now? Not so much.

I am at work, sitting and typing as quickly as I can, stringing the words together as they come to my mind in an attempt to go as quickly as I can and get this finished in under five minutes.

I said that because it works as filler, although now that I’ve said that, everyone will notice and my plan that was grand will no longer be so, therefore revealing the true nature of this post which is yet to be decided, but soon will be, therefore leading to other things in the world that will interchangeably connect in some sort of vast network that links us all together, allowing us to communicate with someone in another country and making the world feel much smaller than it actually is, which is somewhat amazing when you think about it.

I believe it will be called “The Big Connection”.

Then people will talk and ideas will spread as everyone gets along much better than before (you’d hope), therefore unifying us all in some sort of mad dance that forces everyone to dance madly whilst their legs get really muscular until they explode into some sort of fantastic display for everyone to see.

It probably would not be that amazing at all, but one can dream, can’t they?

I’m sitting down and I’d rather stand. However, standing would meant hat more people can look at me and I’d rather not stare at them, for if I stare too intensely, then they may feel shame and I do not want to introduce that into someone’s life, for it is up to them to do that to themselves rather than I, for I am merely a man sitting down at a job and I am not wearing a hat.

Sophia: Live at Stengade, Copenhagen (DK) 13/02/1997 Review

Between Fixed Water and The Infinite Circle Sophia played their first performance in Copenhagen which was recorded by Danish National Radio. Earlier in 2017 with the assistance of a friend, Robin Proper-Sheppard made the recording available for everyone to hear.

The performance is a combination of songs from Fixed Water, as well as songs that would see their release on The Infinite Circle. It works mostly as a document of a band in a semi-transitional phase. Some of the earlier versions of the (then) newer songs sound quite developed whereas others sound like there’s a bit more work required. With that being said, there’s a clear idea of how the songs would be shaped and they still work very well atmosphere and sound-wise.

Although it is slightly imbalanced in parts, the mix is fairly even for all the instruments. The clarity of the performance is excellent the whole way through the recording. As many of Sophia’s songs rely more on the subtleties and textures of the music, especially the ones presented here, this is a significant benefit. So much of what makes the songs work would be lost if one instrument was often taking over the songs.

The vocals aren’t as developed as they have become, both recorded and live, but they are still strong. There’s a sense that Robin Proper-Sheppard was searching for how his voice worked with this form of music, but it doesn’t come off as being lost or uncertain. He knows how to carry his voice and has an idea of how it works, delivering lyrics of morose and sad subject matter that could very easily come off as dramatic whinging with conviction that makes them seem honest and believable without wallowing in the misery.

If there’s anything that Live at Stengade… does, it shows Sophia at a transitional stage. It works well as a record of a time between albums when Sophia were working toward something new and slightly different. It’s an excellently captured performance that may get them new fans, but is mostly for those already into their music. This could have ended up being bad, but it is not. It is an excellent live album.

Growth on Hacking River

Here’s a photo of some vegetation building up and growing on Hacking River.

This was seen at a part where a road is built directly onto the river as a crossing.
It is also a dam that goes by the name of Audley Weir.

There doesn’t appear to be much freedom for water flow at Audley Weir and with the vegetation growth (as well as soil buildup), the ability for the water to flow freely is further reduced.

I think that this photo shows some of the growth well.

I like that the growth takes prominence in the photo. There’s plenty of other stuff to see, but my eyes are continually brought back to the vegetation that is close.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 254: The King of Spin

It had been tough getting to this point and there was a lot of pressure. From within the locker room, they could hear all the people cheering and booing, all enthralled in the excitement of the display of action, the flailing of limbs and all the danger that that entailed.

They were sitting there, waiting their turn, waiting for the very moment in which they would finally be crowned the greatest. They were doing their best to make sure that their nerves would not get to them, but it seemed as though the pressure was affecting them ever-so-slightly. Still, they could not let this moment pass them by. They could not back out now. All the time that they had spent working toward their one goal for as long as they could remember. All the sacrifices that they had made.

They knew that if they skipped on this now, that the opportunity would never arise after. They had to make the most of this moment and refuse to back down.

It was difficult, but they knew that they could succeed so long as they stayed as focused on the goal as they could.

Much time passed whilst they sat there waiting to be called to come to the arena. It seemed as though they had lived a full lifetime whilst they were waiting to walk toward where they would finally defeat their opponents.

It was time for them to rise and walk into the view of the crowd that was waiting for them to perform.

They made their way as quickly as they could so that the crowd could see that they were indeed visible sooner rather than later. They were feeling more nervous now than they had earlier been and it was showing. Still, they pushed on and stepped into the sight of the crowd.

The crowd was quiet. It was almost far too much to handle. Yet still, the person pushed their way onward, one foot in front of the other to the centre of the arena where they would finally engage in taking the crown from any reigning champion that would dare stand in their way at this point.

They were there. They could be seen. It was far more silent than one would expect. They still pushed on to the centre of the arena.

And then, there they were, standing in full view of everyone there who was watching and waiting to see the final bout go down.

They were there surrounded by far more people than they had the time to count, completely alone in the centre. They felt small and powerless.

They began to tune everything out once more as they began to take form and shape into their hands. Twisting their body around from the waist up, holding the pose for a moment, they were ready.

They allowed themselves to unwind as they entered their quick rotation.

Faster and faster they rotated, pure in action. Surely now they were the king of spin.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:30:97

I overheard something said in the lunch room about someone being the king of spin which then inspired the above fiction.

I like that this is a ridiculous premise, but then again the whole sports star rising and succeeding being done as a film premise is so overdone at this point that this bit of writing may be no less ridiculous than the film premise.

Sorry about the repetition.

Mirror Sky

Not quite, but it is above the ground.

This was taken near Central Station.

I like how there’s a wave-like pattern formed by these panels, as well as patterns of colour and light.

I like how the way the ground is reflected creates an ambiguity as to what it looks like.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 253: Generic Fantasy Story

On the top of the trees, the wild mongoose of destiny awaits the destiny that is set out for it, which is to be  a mongoose that is out of place that needs to fulfill the destiny of someone else who is on a quest that is as dramatic and “epic” as can be, for the more “epic” and dramatic the quest, the more that destiny is needed.

There were fated, vague mentions of a prophecy of a coming darkness; an evil that would spread across the lands and subjugate all that it could, but before all hope was lost, a child would be born who would bring hope to the world and push back the evil, finally defeating it after its many years of reigning over the land and increasing its power.

The child was raised innocently and far away from the evil, having a mostly easy life in the village in which it grew up. However, when the great evil finally took its home, it journeyed out and slowly discovered its destiny, which involved much questing and much suffering, but in the end the child knew that it would reign triumphant and free the land from the ironclad grasp of the evil that tried to suffocate the beauty and nature of the world as the evil did evil things, such as enslave people for industry to build a scorched empire or something, and developing a palace that was so big that it became a bit superfluous as, whilst it worked well as a symbol of evil, it was impractical as it took too long to get around.

And anyway, what would happen when its army finally conquered everything? What would it then do? Would the army turn around and defeat the evil on its own? Would it continue to follow and keep a perpetual subjugation going on in the world?

Wouldn’t people eventually adapt and find a a solution?

Anyway, there was journeying. There was question. Sometimes at once, but not usually. Then there was prophecy. Then the mongoose of destiny sitting in the tree was used in the way that was required in order for it to fulfill its role in the destiny of the child of the prophecy. Then there was some fighting and some horse riding action.

It was one of those days.

Then there was more fighting and then a battle. Then the evil was vanquished once and for all, until it became convenient for it to not be vanquished.

It had been an arduous journey and, eventually through time it fell into myth and fiction.

The lineage would fade away, obscured by legend, but it would always be told and passed down. However, what would not be told was the suffering and the journey and the “epic” nature of the journey, as well as the mongoose of destiny sitting on the tree, waiting for the destiny to be fulfilled in whichever way that it needed to be.

It was one of those journeys.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:32:94

I went into this not knowing what I was going to write and I came up with something that I didn’t know I would write.

It has a nice flow to it and I like that it’s generic and ambiguous, but I think it could have been better.

The Superstructure of Sydney Harbour Bridge

What a view!

Well, it’s another photo of the Sydney Harbour “Bridge“, but I think it’s an interesting photo.

The bridge just seems to be hanging there, placed into the photo whilst at the same time feeling like it is a part of the photo that was always there.

I think that there’s a difference in geometry between the bridge and the buildings in this shot.

I think that there’s also a strong sense of depth in this photo.

This is my entry into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Tall Trees Along the Path

Here’s one of the photos that I took whilst I was bushwalking last week.

Here you can see some tall trees among a lush growth of vegetation.

Like the rest of the bush land, this is an area that I consider as being beautiful.

It felt like I was in some sort of forest, with a lot of ferns and other forms of small vegetation with a number of taller trees around, feeling very open and yet not at the same time.

For Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness this week, there was a theme which was “Wild”.

This is my submission.

I strongly recommend checking out Monochrome Madness and, if you partake in photography or have an interest in taking it up, then I also recommend submitting something. It’s a small, yet strong community-driven event that I honestly believe is worth the time.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Cables

Here is a shot of… well… cables.

I think that they form an interesting pattern  and sit well with the sky in the background.

I like that, to me, the cables feel smaller than they are.

I hope you enjoy.
