Five-Hundred Word Challenge 156: More Writing About the Ocean

So I was going to write about something this morning, but to be honest, I’m not sure as to what it was going to be about anymore, so instead I’m going to ramble on for a while and maybe talk about the ocean once again, as, despite my having talked about it and probably said the same thing over and over, I can;t help but continually feel drawn to it and have a strong desire to talk about it on a semi-regular basis.

Well, that and it’s also an easy thing to continue to go back to on a semi-regular basis.

Well, I could talk about that. I could choose to talk about nothing at all and waste everyone’s time by typing more gibberish than usual.

Now I’m not sure what to do, so I think I’ll just go with talking about the ocean.

The ocean; it’s a large body of water that happens to be wet. In the water is molecules that compose the water.

There are also fish.

You can get wet if you go into the ocean. Sometimes you will require a towel or some sort of other object to assist in drying quickly. Sometimes you may not bother with doing such a thing and instead let the sun dry you as you might not feel like drying yourself quickly for some reason after getting out of the ocean.

Some people go into the ocean to swim, and some others go into the ocean to dive.

Sometimes sharks will be near you for some reason and they may or may not attack you, depending on various circumstances.
Some of these circumstances are within your control, whereas others will not be. Such is the nature of circumstances in certain situations.

The ocean is very large. Therefore, it also very big.
Despite having been over it many times, we still know very little about it and therefore should strive to learn far more than we currently know, in order to have a greater understanding of it and the impact we have which would allow us to work harder to make sure we reduce the amount of damage we do by a significant amount.

Sometimes, on a moonless night, people swim in the ocean.
Sometimes, on a sunny day, people swim in the ocean.
Sometimes, outside of these two situations, people swim in the ocean.

It’s probably safe to say that people will choose to swim in the ocean at almost any given time, as it’s an enjoyable thing to do.

Sometimes there are big waves and there are small waves. Sometimes I body-surf on the waves that are big for a city beach in Sydney.

Sometimes I think that I should try to write something a bit more interesting. Then I remember that I like the ocean. I remember that, most of the time, I like the smell of the ocean, as well as how calming and intense it is at the same time.

The ocean sure is swell.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 08:17:69

I’m fairly satisfied with that, even if it was fairly flat writing.

Written at home.

Return to Surry Hills

From ten to nine years ago, I worked in Surry Hills.
It wasn’t a great job and the business wasn’t one that was satisfying to work for, but it was a job.

I spent the some of my early formative years of my “adulthood” working in that job. It was outbound sales.

A person I knew referred to it as a place for social outcasts.

When finishing during the evening, you’d sometimes here someone’s band practising. You’d go to the dive bar on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (or the dive bar section of the remodeled and somehow crappier, upmarket version of the old bar) and hang with some of your coworkers.

A number of the places managed to look really old and rundown, despite being fairly sturdy. It was easy to get bad food that wouldn’t make you ill, but there was always a risk you would take when choosing to do so.

Crime was a bit more of a problem, although you’d usually luck out and not have to deal with any confrontations.

On the very rare occasion, you’d head to The Hopetoun Hotel for a few drinks and see a band.

I don’t care much to think fondly of the time I spent working in Surry Hills. There were good times and there were bad times and I pass through it on a fairly regular basis when not on Semester break. It was what it was and my time is here and now.

When I was working in my last job there, it felt somewhat decrepit and done. It had some fairly frequent crime in some parts.

Having started a new job in Surry Hills, I’ve noticed that not much has changed. Despite gentrification seemingly attempting to take it over, no sounds of bands practising found as of yet, crime being less of a problem, and some new cafés and redevelopment, it seems and feels like it’s a fairly decrepit place trying to be more than it is, seemingly pretending to be somewhat bohemian whilst coming across more as conformist setting. Like other suburbs in Sydney, I don’t mind Surry Hills, but I don’t pretend it’s anything amazing.

With that being said, despite it seemingly trying to hide it, it was nice to see that Surry Hills is still kind of crap.

City Sunrise

Here’s a shot I took a few weeks ago.
I like how the sun looks to be bigger in the sky than it usually does, although it probably looks bigger when it’s just come from the horizon than when it’s in the sky around midday.

I decided to put up these two versions of the photo because… I don’t know why.
I guess they make a nice contrast with each other, although the first has a bit too much yellow in it, I think.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Another Sydney Park Sunset

On Monday, a friend and I went to Sydney Park to see the Perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system as it rose. Whilst waiting, seeing the sunset, I decided to take a few photos as it was the sunset that I had hoped to capture a few weeks prior.

Most people missed the beauty of the sunset, waiting for the “super” moon to rise.
There was at least twenty minutes of this light display that most of the people missed out on seeing as apparently it would mean they would completely miss the moon.

I ended up taking quite a few photos of the sunset. As said before, it was beautiful. It had a lot more “Magic” to it than the moon, which only appeared from behind some clouds for a few minutes before being hidden by the clouds once more.

It didn’t seem to appear any bigger than it had been over the past few months, but maybe that has to do with the location of viewing.

I find it surprising that so many people willingly did not turn around and see something significantly better than the “super” moon, because the sunset really was the superior event to experience in this case.

This is my submission for The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

One Thousand Word Challenge 15: I don’t Understand

I don’t understand many things.
A lot of that comes with experience.
Whilst I’d like to believe that what I do understand, I understand well and have a fairly strong grasp of knowledge surrounding that understanding of the things I understand, there’s still a lot that I don’t and, whilst I will hopefully be able to learn and understand more as I get older, I find it humbling to know that, no matter how much I learn, I will always know very little as there are always new things to learn and know and I am a small person in a large universe.

With that being said, I don’t think I’ll ever understand why some people seem to want to obsess with the past.
Could it be due to a desire to not let go of what has already been and may not ever be again?
Is it due to having the idea of something so firmly drilled into their head that they cannot get past it, preventing them from discovering other things?

What if bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd are good not because they actually have artistic merit, but because the idea of them being good as been so firmly beaten into people as they’re growing up that they cannot grasp with anything to the contrary?

I’m not a big fan of these bands by any measure.
For me, The Beatles were a band that I listened to when I was a kid/young teenager and I kind of grew out of them. I still listen to a song or two on occasion, but beyond that, I don’t think much of them. I think they’re alright, but there’s not much else I think when it comes to said band.

I don’t understand as to why people have expressed surprise at my view of this. Different people listen to different things.

I find it almost as difficult to understand as the act of someone writing a whole lot of crap in the form of some sort of “challenge” series and putting it out into the unholy abyss that is known as the Internet, expecting that someone will read it and find some sort of amazing brilliance in these gems of sub-par writing that somehow are allowed to exist in some form that cannot be entirely explained beyond “someone writes a lot of sub-par crap”.

Now that is something that I find incredibly difficult to understand. I mean, who the hell would thing that doing such a thing would be a good idea? It’s not interesting. it’s absolutely terrible. It’s confusing, bewildering, and confusing and I cannot wrap my head or thoughts around the very concept of doing such a thing.

Could it be for some sort of validation of self-worth that won’t lead to any actual validation because the only thing that can validate the self-worth of someone is themselves? Could it actually be that they’re trying to construct some sort of complex form of literature that will span many different interweaving sections that may eventually reveal themselves as being some sort of amazing text that will somehow redefine how things are read, as well as how things are written, in the hopes to reveal that the old methods need to be changed because they have been stagnant for far too long, thus inhibiting our ability to become better writers that are far beyond the standards that had been set so long ago so that the classics remain the few classics that there are, thus preventing the collection of classics from growing into something far greater and more note-worthy than it already happens to be at this point in time?

Could it be that the person is some sort of person who thinks that doing such a thing will improve their ability to write, especially when it comes to stream-of-conscious writing so that they can have something here that will capture people and give them something to read that they may enjoy, no matter of bad (or good) the things that they write turn out to be?

As much as I’d like to believe that these are the case, they all seem highly unlikely to me and I doubt that the reason is something that I will ever be able to ever know, leaving me to continually puzzle over what the true reason could be.

It remains the same for my not understanding as to why some people seem to want to live in the past.
Some almost seem to fetishize the idea in their minds, seemingly forgetting that there’s been a lot of progress made since. Whilst I do think that it is important to remember what has come before us and appreciate that once things seemed simpler, one needs to remember that remaining there and ignoring a lot of the things that can be seen as really bad only leads to stagnation, as it’s progress that allows us to continue forward.

Ignoring certain careers that require it, staying willingly stuck in the past only inhibits the ability to grow.

Not entirely related, but I feel that I should mention this as it does have a little bit to do with why I’m writing this right now:

Yesterday, whilst at my new job, I heard some strong talk about how good The Simpsons was.

I found myself feeling quite indifferent to the talk about it because I’ve had my time with it and I’m done. It had its time and place and, whilst a few of the things that have been seen in the show could be seen as still being relevant, I feel that it’s time to move on and away from it and find something else to endlessly love.

I’m probably being a bit harsh in saying that, but that’s how I feel.

Maybe I’m being a bit cynical, but I feel that too many people want to live in the past and I don’t understand as to why.

The time it took to write one thousand words: 21:22:22

So I wasn’t expecting this to be as long as it is and I think it’s a bit long-winded and probably makes the point I was trying to make a bit too much.

Oh well.

Sydney Park Chimneys During Sunset

Here’s a photo I took at the same time as this one.

It wasn’t the sunset that I was hoping for, but I’m still happy with how it looks.
The glow is small in a fairly expansive sky and the darkness, whilst increasing, isn’t hiding all of the details of the scenery.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 155: I won’t Write About a Cyclist

So I was going to write about how there was some guy who managed to annoy me because he wouldn’t move out of the way because he was too busy listening to his music and blocking the pathway to notice that I was trying to get his attention so he would move his bike slightly so I could ride past him, requiring me to tap him after speaking loudly to try and get his attention.

I will not write about how much it annoyed me and reminded me that I don’t like some cyclists as they can be just as frustrating as public transport commuters.

I won’t write about how this reminded me of how much it annoys me to see people cycling on the road at a casual pace during traffic, slowing everyone down because you’re too lazy to go at a speed that could be considered somewhat tolerable and think that your comfort is more important than making sure you don’t hold up other people.

If you are a cyclist and you’re on the road and you either have no intention of going as fast as possible when there’s a fair bit of traffic around, or unable to, you should stay away from busy roads until you’re able to go at a speed that could be seen as acceptable.

I won’t write about those. I won’t write about how, as a cyclist, I find a lot of other cyclists frustrating to have to deal with and find myself understanding why many motorists get annoyed with them.

I won’t write about any of that because it’s something that’s probably been written about a lot more than I can even care to try and imagine.

I don’t want to talk about how someone on his bike, listening to music so loud that they don’t notice that someone is trying to get their attention to get around them thought it was completely okay to block off a shared path whilst they waited for a crossing light to change because they didn’t see any reason why they should move their bike a few feet forward so that not only could I get around them, but other cyclists would also have a clear path to continue moving, should any more show up in the time that said person was there busy being a nuisance.

I’m fully aware that I’m probably misreading the actions (or lack thereof) of a singular person that I had an interaction with that did not last very long (it was most likely under a minute).

However, I think that it doesn’t take that long to see if you’re doing something that may inhibit others and work to rectify that, no matter how little or great an amount of effort you need to put into said task that would allow you to be a little bit nicer to the people who may or may not be around you, whether they appreciate it or not.

I won’t write about that tonight.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:30:29
Urgh.

To be fair, I’m not as annoyed as I’m implying.
To also be fair, I could have also done a better job writing.

Well, bed time.

Dogs in Motion

Here’s another photo I took whilst in Jubilee Park.

I like seeing how creatures look when they move.
I like how this has a strong sense of motion.

This is my entry into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.

You should check out what everyone else enters, as well as Leanne’s other work.

I hope you enjoy.

Dogs

One day last week, I ended up sitting in Jubilee Park for a while whilst I took photos of dogs and birds.

Here’s one of those photos.

Cloud Trails

Here’s a photo I took a couple of weekends ago.

I like the patterns that the clouds form.
I think they’re really nice.

I like how well the reflection on the water came through as it makes most things in the shot look more like they’re coming from a single point.
I also like how it’s seen in the quiet of the morning.

I hope you enjoy.
