Problem 10: Love this Suburb

I do not like the suburb I live in.
I never have.
I think it’s far too compressed.
I also think that it is far more expensive than what it should be.

The subrub feels like it’s a very cold and uncaring place where people are more worried about cred than they are about others.

I moved to where I am for two reasons. The first being that my ex wanted to be closer to her family.

The second being that it meant I could live next door to Ewe.Beyond that, I could do without the suburb easily. It sucks.

The parks are nice though.

The problem here is that I wrote the suburb off well before I gave it a chance.

I’ve never really checked out many of the stores and markets that it has. It’s safe to say that I’ve never really explored it propely at any stage, usually only being on the main street to get through the suburb as quickly as possible.

So how do I change this?

By checking the place out properly.

From what I’ve learned, my suburb does have a strong sense of community that has survived through it’s gradual gentrification (something that has had an odd effect here). There are many different things to check out through the area that I would actually be interested in, so I might as well start giving it a go.

This might not seem like a big thing but it was a major point of contention between myself and a few others simply because I made a decision about a place and refused to challenge it.

Usually when I would bring it up, I would crap on about how great other places were instead of being considerate because the best thing to do when you have no good reason to dislike where you live is to dig your heels in and ignore all reasoning.

Makes for fun times.

I guess the advice here is to not judge something before you have a chance to experience it properly.

Problem 9: An Argument is Nigh!

Apologies for the lower-than-usual quality of the below. Brain still in work mode.

I don’t know anyone who likes to argue.

Actually, maybe I do, but I’m not entirely sure.

Anyway, I don’t like arguing.
I can’t express myself well through it.
Everyone ends up angry or upset afterwards.
The problem here is that I unintentionally seek it out.
I do this a lot.

Sometimes I’ll start a fight by using an opinion that whilst I may not believe, I’ll use anyway because it will antagonise the person I’m hanging out with. Other times I’ll start arguing because I’m tired and grumpy.

Whenever the opportunities arise, my brain switches off and all reasoning exits via window instead of staying and telling me not to start a fight.

That is a bad description of what happens, but it’s better than saying that it happens automatically ALL THE TIME.

A lot of it probably has to do with seeing my parents fly off the handle for little to no discernable reason often enough to have a lasting influence on me. However, it is my problem to deal with at this stage and it’s what I need to stop.

So how do I change this?

At the moment I haven’t fought with anyone for a while. Ewe has pointed this out to me and is pretty happy about it. However, this doesn’t mean it has stopped.

I’ve begun to become aware of times when I would normally begin arguing, which is good. This allows me to think before I open my mouth and therefore not anger others by automatically switching to… automatic.

Right now it’s a process I have to stay aware but it will eventually become something more natural to me.

But what about times when I argue because of something I do believe?

These would start because I would get quite defensive for no reason.

Well, it was probably out of a subconscious fear of questioning my own beliefs and opinions.

There isn’t anything wrong with wanting to get your views across but it can be done with full consideration of someone else’s and not being afraid of having your own challenged.

Again, it’s a bit of a think before I speak but this is also about accepting that any response or difference of opinion I allow in can only help to shape my views further instead of letting them stagnate. It also lets discussions stay on course and end more pleasantly instead of becoming a loud ego fueled wank-fest.

Well, here’s hoping I can pull out of this one.

Problem 8: You can read my Mind

Pardon the bad title. Brain in work mode.

So yesterday I was having a chat with Naa and I did the verbal invasion of the conversation thing again because when you’re conducting a language conquest it’s best to start with your friends to allow the domination to spread faster.

So whilst I was crapping on, one of my problems I forgot about came up. This is quite possibly the most important thing I need to work on currently as it has caused myself and many others far more trouble than it’s worth.

I put a bit of fiction here a few posts back as I thought it fit nicely into the narrative of my somewhat dramatic yet uninteresting life, weaving it in slightly with a previous post and posing questions in it as well.

Yes, it was written whilst I was bitter. Yes, it draws on some elements in my life. No, it was not written about anyone. It is fiction. I assumed everyone would know.

AND THAT’S THE PROBLEM.

“But Stupidity Hole, surely you wouldn’t make an assumption that ridiculous regarding something like that!”

I would and did.

Generally I assume that people know what I’m thinking, why I do or say something or why I might find something a problem. Usually this is because I will mention something once (sometimes as a side note) and leave it at that.

At other times it is due to my thinking that once someone has spent enough time around me, they’ll automatically know my thoughts/understand my doing of stuff/saying things.

On uncommon occasions, I will put something out there with no explanation because I don’t think about puttig an explanation with it. I think that if it’s obvious to me, it should be obvious to everyone else.

What ends up happening is either myself or a friend or a significant other gets angry due to my assuming. Then what usually happens is that I end up explaining and get frustrated that there was no understanding, despite that resting on my shoulders.

So how do I change this?

I have to be more open about thoughts and actions instead of outright assuming or mentioning something briefly and then assuming.

Restating things on occasion is not a bad thing to do either. It does prevent a lot of bad events later down the track.

With that particular post, I’ve added a disclaimer and will do so for future fictitious writings I make appear to be real life. To be honest, this wouldn’t have occurred to me if it hadn’t been pointed yesterday that writing a fictitious post like that with no obvious sign that it is not real life makes it not a respectable read. Especially when it comes off as spiteful.

This is good because I was going to write about a car crash and a failed robbery and have no indication they didn’t happen.

Whilst this is a communication problem, I think it’s a pretty specific issue that requires more attention than generalising it under one thing. It will take some time, but I can turn it around.

Problem 7: Communication Breakdown

They say that silence is golden.

Hmmm…

It bloody well isn’t when you know something is wrong.

There were two major problems and they were both communication.

There is no denying that we are somewhat lacking in that area.

I wouldn’t communicate about my issues and insecurities. I wouldn’t talk about my general feelings a lot of the time either, pretending a lot of things were fine. I wouldn’t talk about these things to anyone and kept them inside as I felt that they were my problems only. Technically they are, but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t discuss them with my ex.

They would manifest quite uhealthily, leading to some pretty big meltdowns and becoming a contributing factor to my negativity (I’ll stop with the self-plugging eventually), making me generally unpleasant to be around.

I would express what I considered problems in the relationship, but I’d let them come out as a set of instructions instead of actually discussing them in a more civilised manner.

My ex wouldn’t communicate about the problems she saw in the relationship. She would tell others though. Whilst we could have worked on them, I don’t feel she is entirely at fault in this regard due to my unpleasantness making it difficult to talk to me about things.

So how do I change this?

The negativity has reduced faster than I thought it would and it in turn has made my general responses more pleasent. Still have a way to go there though.

The other thing I need to do is stop pretending I feel everything is ok when I’m feeling stressed, insecure or down. The more open I am, the more likely I will discuss them calmly and not hide them away. In turn, the less I will be affected when I am feeling these things.

Now I know what I say next doesn’t apply to everyone there are many ways a relationship can function, but for those that it does, here is some advice that you will hear a lot because whilst it is obvious, you must not forget it:

Always communicate with your partner. A lot of the time it can be hard but if you want your relationship to be healthy, one of the things that must be constant is communication. It leads to better understanding, relating and general happiness.

Don’t be closed off from it and guard your feelings. It’ll really make your partner feel as though they can’t communicate with you and if that is how they feel, you run a high risk of losing a great person in your life.

It is good for you to be strong for your partner, but there is nothing wrong with lowering your guard around them.

This is something I should have paid more attention to and now I’m fighting a long battle I may have already lost to show the woman I love I’m worth another chance.

Sure, there were other issues, but communication has been a major one.

I’m not letting it be a problem again.

Friends are Evil

PLEASE NOTE: The following is a work of fiction. Whilst it was written in a dramatic mood, it is not actually about anyone. It weaved an interesting narrative but that was it.
My apologies to those who have taken offense and those who will take offense in the future.

I had to think a lot about whether I was going to post about this or not but I’m feeling a bit bitter and also want to get the opinion of you, my readers putting up with my written dramatics, on whether what someone did was an appropriate thing to do or not and if a stance I have is childish.

A few weeks back I found out that a friend of mine I had known for a while had been listening to my ex about the problems she saw in the relationship.

What my friend did was tell my ex to break up with me.

My ex wouldn’t communicate the problems to me and had previously asked this friend to talk to me about them as they supposedly knew what to say due to knowing me longer. What I was told was that I needed to treat my ex better (not something I can deny), without much information beyond that.

This happened twice and after one occasion I asked my ex if she had asked this friend to speak to me about our relationship. She said she hadn’t.

I understand direct discussion better than what (in hindsight) I felt was vague hinting.

After the break up, said friend told me they weren’t taking sides and wanted to make sure both my ex and I were ok.

It’s been a few weeks since they last spoke to me.

Now to be fair, communication was a problem for both of us. However, what we didn’t communicate about were different things. I’ll go into more detail about that later in the week.

Now I haven’t been a good friend to this person. However, I don’t feel that justifies their telling my ex to break up with me. I believe said friend should have told my ex to sit down with me and discuss the problems instead. I don’t know if what I believe is fair or not though.

The other issue I have here is that whilst this friend has known me for a while, they don’t know me nearly as well as my ex or other friends of mine do. We didn’t talk that often and when we did, our conversations were about problems and not much else, so them claiming to know what to say seems like a bit of a misfire to me.

In the post about the first two weeks after the break up, I said that I first rejected the idea of friendship and then changed my mind later on.

As word gets around, I found out that the person I saw at the art exhibition (pardon the two self-promotions) had told my ex how childish I was for not wanting to remain friends and that I needed to grow up.

My ex had always known that when I go through a break up, I don’t like to remain friends as it’s too much emotional weight for me and I’d much rather let go of that and move on with my life.

I have seen some great friendships come from break ups, with people getting along better than when they were together. However, it was still not something I felt was for me.

However, I (obviously) changed my mind; partly because it gives me a better chance to show that I’m worth another shot and partly because I still really care and still love her.

She hasn’t spoken to me since the first week but I have my hopes.

I know that the childish thing isn’t much, but it has made me wonder if my opinion on friendship after break up really is childish or not.

So, do you all think my friend was justified in telling my ex to break up with me or not and do you think my initial stance of not having friendship after break up was childish?

Also, if anyone is wondering about the title of the post, it’s a song by Jesu. It’s somewhat heavy and right now far more intense for me than it usually is. I found it somewhat appropriate given the subject matter (although there are some stones I need to take).

A Dull Post for your Monday

I’m riding the bus to work right now, wondering as to why I let myself leave late.

At least I’m not running too late to work.

Feeling healthier and more awake than I have over the past few weeks. Not feeling much happier; much more satisfied though.

Actually, I am feeling a fair bit happier.

The situation with my ex has not changed. Right now it’s waiting for communication to begin. As much as I want to initiate it, I have to be patient.

I thought the break up would hurt the most so far, but it’s been things I’ve realised about what I’ve carried with me through my life at this stage that have hurt me far more. The good thing though is that with everything i do realise, I am able to work out what I need to do to become a better me.

Linked to communication: my ex’s unwillingness to let me show her whether I’m worth it or not is also hurting me, but again, I need to be patient.

Sometimes I think the Sun at this hour is very beautiful. At other times I think it’s tormenting. Usually I just think it’s the Sun.

I’m still really scared. Not of succeeding and things going back to how they were before, but of missing the chance I’d need to take.

And now I’m at work. Urgh.

Problem 6: I Need to Control

Actually, I don’t.
I don’t like the idea of trying to control others.
Admittedly, sometimes you need to nudge people to get them to do something but you shouldn’t be forceful with it.

My ex felt I was controlling her a lot.
I never was. However, I can see how she came to that conclusion.

I’m not good with words. I’ll go to say something and it will not come out in a good way.

An example would be how I ask people to do stuff around the house.
Instead of asking if someone can do something, I’ll ask them if they would like to do it.

A better example would be that instead of discussing what I thought a problem was, I would tell my ex what I thought and tell her to stop doing it.

Due to my shitty attitude towards the end, I would be very blunt and somewhat direct in getting my ex to do things my way or doing things I wanted to do. I would consider the alternatives she presented, but I would always shoot them down instead of being open to them.

So how do I change this?

I can start by considering my words much more carefully when I use them.

I can also stop being closed off to different options when it comes to doing things. Discussing them instead of dismissing them goes a long way.

Reading this, it doesn’t seem like it’s entirely controlling behaviour, but it’s the effect it has that makes it what it is.

It wss never my intention to come across that way but I managed to do it spectacularly. As it is probably quite ingrained into her mind, that I’m not trying to control my ex will be one of the things I will have the most difficulty convincing her of.

Thankfully, this is one of the easier things for me to turn around.

I’ve already begun to.

Problem 5: Game the Day Away

Who enjoys gaming?

I know I do!
I enjoy it so much that I can spend most of my waking hours gaming. Multiple days in a row, given the opportunity.

I’ll even skip on studying if it means I can squeeze a few more hours in.

That I’m so addicted to it is the problem.

It most certainly isn’t the worst addiction one could have, but it is still pretty bad.

I’ve used gaming to hide away a lot of my insecurities and not deal with general problems in my life. I’ve also shut myself off from people during important times, my ex included.

Now we have done plenty of gaming together, but I’d go longer than her instead of doing more important stuff, like head out and enjoy the day.

Well, not always. Enough for me to recognise it is an issue though.

So how do I change this?

That I have done very little of it over the  past month is a good start. However, I need to do more.

I can set myself time limits for my gaming based on more important priorities. It would severely limit the amount I do, but at least I’d be forced to function a little better.

It would certainly give me less of an excuse to hide my insecurities and problems.

Certainly easier said than done, but not impossible!

Le Parkour

This week is my fourth week of parkour.
I’ve had four body conditioning sessions, two harbour runs and two training sessions with Drew and Justo.

I’m picking up the techniques quickly but still having trouble pulling them off properly. Part of the learning curve; one that doesn’t seem too steep, thankfully.

I do worry that I’m going to burn out doing it, but I keep pushing. I know I’ll get past that feeling eventually.

Drew and Justo are a massive help. They’re keeping me focused and making it more enjoyable than it should be (although the others I’m doing everything with are pretty awesome as well). I already consider them good friends. They’re amazing people and I feel very comfortable and relaxed around them.

Soon I’ll be incorporating what I’m learning into my travel to work, uni and home. I see opportunities to use what I’m learning but I’m not confident enough to yet.

I think I may have said this before, but what I really like about parkour is how it uses the body and the environment, as well as it’s nature as a non-competitive activity. I’m probably wrong here, but I think it is quite graceful, fluid and natural. It suits me fine.

Right now it’s hard for me. My body is coping but I want to be able to do more now. I keep injuring my left ankle but I keep pushing on. It’s getting easier though. I feel better and a little more dedicated to achieving my goals after each session. I also feel a bit stronger and agile, so I know my body is adapting. Just have to keep getting past the walls that rise and refuse to let myself give up. Eventually I will be good at this.
