Higher Tide

On one of the days on the turtle island I took some photos over the side of one of the cliffs.

This is one of the photos.

Due to the minerals in the water it seems a little foggy around the rocks..

I like the patterns and texture of the rocks, and how they sit out of the water, breaking its smoothness with their form.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 356: Closer to Christmas

Well, we draw ever closer to Christmas and all I can think of is getting to the end of the year, for Christmas is not a time that I want to be spending my time doing things with.

Such is the way of things, I guess.

I am at work and the customers may be furious if they are not hungover. It is getting close to Christmas and all they can think of is blaming customer service for their own terrible life decisions, such as ordering things at the last minute and then getting annoyed that what they ordered will not arrive in time, despite the warnings that they were provided on our website advising that ordering after a certain time may mean that they will not get what they want before Christmas and may have to wait a few days extra.,

Our sincerest apologies for your not being able to read, you intelligent human being.

Yes, I am tired and grouchy. I don’t care. Today is a day of work and most of the customers will be unpleasant, unless they won’t be unpleasant, in which case I shall swallow my words as I sow rightly should.

Such is the way of work when most of the customers are unreasonable and don’t like the idea of using a little thought, instead preferring to get aggro over the fact that they need something to blame as it means that they don’t have to face the responsibility that they bring up[on themselves.

It certain is a work day today. It is a little warm outside, but soon the air conditioning will be turned on, in which the office will drop to some temperature below twenty degrees Celsius.

This time I have come prepared. I have gloves, I am wearing pants instead of shorts and I also have a beanie.

I probably should have taken a jacket with me, but I felt that that may be a little too excessive, so I’ll just stick with what I have.

I’m almost certain that my arms will be fine.

Soon the Christmas rush will be over and the calls will return to a normal volume. Less getting hammered with enquiries about orders that have been delayed due to a huge increase of orders around Christmas, especially at the last minute.

Less calls from people who don’t know what they are doing and want to put the blame on someone. Less calls from blah blah blah.

I am feeling a little grouchy this morning, but I am sure that with a little bit of time it will pass and I will be back to feling less than grumpy.

I’m sure it will happen at some point during the day.

Maybe it won’t. Maybe I am deluding myself.

Still, there are calls to be taken and customers to help  and soon Christmas will be past.

So, here they come. Here come the calls. I will be ready.

Or I will just be grouchy. I don’t know yet.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:27:65

A rant that could be a little more sharp, but is otherwise fine. Probably.

Written at work.

Tree Obscures the Sun

I think that this photo was only a partial success.

I was trying to get as much of the sun hidden behind the tree as I could but I didn’t completely account for the brightness.

Still, I think the photo is decent.

I think that the focus on the tree falls more on its shape than its detail.

I do like the way the rocks sit around the tree, and I think that the softer colouring makes the photo a little easier to look upon.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Ups and Downs: The Sky’s in Love With You Review

Ups and Downs have a new album out called The Sky’s in Love With You, so here’s a review.

The new album from Ups and Downs sees the band release something that sounds like a continuation without sounding as though it was pulled from their first period. Coming in around a lean thirty-four minutes, the songs are packed with an excellent use of melody.

The songs don’t sound as though they drag and are fleshed out enough to not feel underdeveloped. There’s a nice, natural-sounding textural layering to each song that allows them to inhabit their own space whilst also feeling like they are part of the album. This is driven by strong, tight performances that never overplay.

Greg Atkinson’s vocals are still as good as they ever have been. He does not sound tired nor as though he is struggling and delivers well-written lyrics that are as image-evoking as they are emotive with much aplomb.

There’s something about Greg Atkinson’s vocals and the band’s performance that separates both him and Ups and Downs from other artists. Perhaps it is that Ups and Downs know how to temper melody with a mostly low-key performance and a fair bit of breathing space. Perhaps it is that Greg Atkinson uses subtlety to great effect. There could be many reasons. Whatever it is, in conjunction with a strong sense of melody and ability to work well with what they have, it not only separates Ups and Downs from other artists but also elevates them above their peers, especially on The Sky’s in Love With You.

Branch Ascending

There were a few shots of plants that I took whilst on the turtle island.

Here’s one of them.

To me, it appears as though the branch on this old tree is “Ascending”.

I like how at certain parts the branch suddenly changes direction.

I also like that it looks almost like a sculpture.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for this week.

I hope you enjoy.

Five Gulls

A photo of five gulls in flight over the surface of Sydney Harbour.

Great form seen in these birds as they head somewhere to find something.

Low are the waves, allowing their flight a much easier one, for they are not being hit by the waves.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness this week.

If you enjoy monochrome photography, then I strongly recommend checking out Monochrome Madness. If you do photography, then I also recommend submitting.

I also recommend checking out Leanne Cole’s work outside of Monochrome Madness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Island Mangrove

One of the many photos that I took whilst on the Island that I was on for the turtle research.

I really like the colour and tone balance of this photo,  although I do think that it is a little too saturated.

It’s nice to see these plants looking rather healthy and I think that I’ve framed them fairly well.

I like that the sky is mostly empty as it gives a fair bit of space and doesn’t draw too much attention away from the plants.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 355: Tunneling for an Exit

The walls were collapsing and there was no escape.

Well, it seemed that there was no escape. It was rather hard to tell, what with all the lack of easily-accessible lighting that would be needed to tell as to where the exits were.

there was only one way out, it seemed and that was down. Further down into an underground that needed to be hastily ,made in order for escape to be successful, for the doors that lead outward were not visible and there was little time to explore. Quick decisions needed to be made and made they were, for there was little time indeed.

Our protagonists began working together as a team, slowly digging at the ground which, thankfully was already cracked.

They made swift work and quite quickly made more than a small indent into the surface.

The walls were falling in on them. They were slow, yet unstoppable as they fell, piece by piece, collapsing into and over each other, almost functioning as a timer that was counting down the time before there was none left.

Onward and hard the protagonists worked, turning their small indent into something more closely resembling a tunnel.

Once they felt that it was deep enough, they began tunneling in a horizontal direction, in order to make progress that would lead to them being able to get away far enough for the escape to be a safe one.

Of course they were digging mostly blind, but that did not deter them.

Their tunnel was deep before it went horizontal. All that was that was above seemed ,much farther away than it was.

Some debris began to fall into the tunnel and some of our protagonists were hit, yet no one was seriously injured and their progress continued unabated.

there was little time to lose and no time to spare. They continued working hard, sweating hard in order to ensure that they survived. Getting trapped in this building was a bad idea, they all realised, almost at the same time. The horizontal tunneling was causing a few issues and their progress was slowing, but onward they continued as they all had a lot to live for at this point.

Eventually the whole building, or at least what remained of it, came down at once. The tunnel was sealed and sound was silenced.

Outside the crowd was watching, both around the building and on their televisions. There was a bit of shock, but no-one was too panicked. It seemed that a group had failed to escape.

The host of the show asked all those around to not write off our protagonists just yet, as the host had a good feeling about their ability to work under pressure.

The minutes passed with silence.

There seemed to be nothing.

Soon some soil could be seen being displaced. The protagonists managed to get out with their lives.

There was cheering from the crowds and those watching.

Our protagonists successfully finished and went on to the next round.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 09:10:48

Writing with a sprained wrist still is fun.

I had the idea to end this the way I ended this around two-hundred words into the writing.

Not sure as to how well it works, but I think that the ending is appropriate.

I think.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 354: One of those ones where I ramble a fair bit

I do not have much left before the time of my lunch ends and I am at work and there are things that I should have taken care of and have not and now I don’t know as to what I and doing with my life anymore as I need to get something down before the end of my lunch and I don’t have the time to do so and here I am sitting writing about it as though it is the most original thing in the world and I am not going to get this done within the time that I would like to get it done but that is the price I pay for the procrastination that I exhibit at every possible opportunity of my life. What am I doing right now? Why am I going right now? Can I get this done within a reasonable time? Can I get something interesting completed within the time that I am setting myself? Can I beat the timer? Can I beat my time? Can I beat using the pause mechanism? Can I do whatever it is that I need to get done within the time that I set myself? Is there coffee available for me to consume readily in the morning so that when the day approaches I will be able to tackle all the problems with one fell swoop, like a magpie defending its nest in a hot summer day, and sometimes spring but not always?

There are many questions to ask and very little time in which to ask it.

The joys of having a sprained wrist means that I have slowed down a little more than I would have liked, but I am still getting it all done.

Here is something interesting, but I am unable to show you for it is sitting in front of me, exhibiting qualities that make the thing that is sitting in front of me interesting.

Such is life. It is a ball of value and value must be contained within some sort of spherical magnet pointing down and yet always facing upside the sun core of the sun.

What am I even going on about now?

Who knows?

I am getting close.

I have crossed the time required and now I am working again.

Racing the time for some sort of supremacy that I can then take hold of and cast into the light above me as the sky opens up its maw and the calls spill forth, coming as a deluge unto my ears and moving my mouth to answer the questions that come my way in order to make sure as many of the customers get a little more knowledge to carry  them on their way to another day just over the horizontal mass that continues to do something beyond providing a massive light show of colour and display reflecting off of the clouds and all the way into another tomorrow that must be faced in order to live.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:12:95

Writing with a sprained wrist is a whole lot of fun.

Written at work.

Leans in to Take the Food

A “Cheeky” cockatoo goes in to get a bite whilst the other one is preoccupied.

I really like the form and pose of both the cockatoos in this photo.

I also like how they’re framed and their colouring.

This is my submission into The Daily Post‘s photo challenge for last week.

I hope you enjoy.
