A Wharf at SIMS

A photo of a wharf at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

I think that there’s a nice calm and simplicity to this photo.

There’s some detail, but otherwise I think this image is straightforward and simple, with some nice patterns.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s Monochrome Madness for this week.

If you’re a fan of monochrome photography on any level, then I recommend checking out Monochrome Madness and I also recommend considering submitting if you do photography.

I also recommend checking out Leanne Cole’s work outside of Monochrome Madness.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 323: Stuck with Hunger

I’m sitting here trying to think of what I can write, but all I can think about right now is how hungry I am.

Ladies and gentleman, I am hungry. It is a sad, tragic fact that exists today currently in a state of persistence and yet I am unable to do anything about it because I am sitting here, glued to my seat trying to get stuff done before I head into university to get even more stuff done than I had previously gotten done.

I am stuck here, unable to get up until the stuff that needs doing is done. Therefore, I am stuck here trying to do things whilst my hunger grows and consumes my very being, driving me more and more toward food whilst I am trying to not think about food.

You may suggest that I get off the seat and go and make myself breakfast, to which I ask: Have you tried getting off a chair and making breakfast? Have you had to deal with the terrors that lie between you and the kitchen, such as the door that needs opening and the table that needs to be navigated because you are unable to walk through it due to its corporeal nature?

These are just two of the many, vast obstacles that I would have to deal with in order to go and get myself food before I finish what I am trying to finish, and these are also the most dangerous of all that I would have to deal with.

The only way I can slay them is through the subtle art of doing other things until I see their completion and am satisfied with the result, of course.

Besides which, one can only get off this chair once it senses that something has been completed as it is that kind of chair.

There are too many obstacles separating my own being and the kitchen. Far too many.

How does one open a door anyway? It’s not like it has some sort of mechanism that allows you to turn something which then in turn makes a bar (or other object that can be considered some form of “lock”) retreat into a space that it can fit into which then allows the door to be opened.

These things are really difficult to deal with and sometimes they don’t even budge. I may need to kick the door down later for someone had shut it for some reason and I have no explanation as to why. It seems like a devious, evil act to commit to someone, for now I am trapped within the very confines of my bedroom until I manage to get stuff done in a timely manner.

Oh, what a horrible fate. Oh, if only I could get off this chair, open my door, and then navigate around a table in order to get into the kitchen so I can make myself something to eat in order to satiate my growing hunger.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 07:21:94

And here we have a dramatic telling of being hungry.

I like this one. Not fantastic, but I do like it and how it flows.

Angular Bird Tension

I have no idea as to what is going on in this photo.

I hope you enjoy.

Unsane: Sterilize Review

Unsane, a band that has been making music for a fair number of years.
An album new is one that which they have released.
Sterilize it is called.

The sound is quite bass-heavy; almost more than what has been heard from Unsane prior to Sterilize. However, the bass does not sound as though it is the focus of the songs. Rather, it seems to be the most prominent instrument in each song, driving along continuously whilst adding a bit of groove.

The drums match both the bass and the guitar in any given moment, adding and reducing percussion when required to emphasize and underscore any given section whilst sounding steady and tight and the guitar fills the remaining space with angular lines and an almost broken, dissonant and at times stabbing sound that adds to the bass-heavy nature of the songs.

The vocals sit somewhere between the rear and middle of the songs without being entirely engulfed. Chris Spencer still has a strong delivery in his scream, sounding as tense as it always has. Sitting where it does in the music, the lyrics become partially buried but still understandable. It seems that the sound of the vocals and lyrics become more about what qualities they add to the music rather than what they are about. With that being said, the lyrics themselves do sound quite well-developed without sounding overworked, falling into the spaces they occupy without sounding as though they had to be forced in awkwardly.

As a whole the songs work quite well together. They are all hard-hitting but in different ways, such as “Factory” being very sudden and bleak, “The Grind” seemingly rolling along and… grinding… and “Avail” being a slower track seeming almost monolithic in its sound. As always, along with the noise there is a surprising bit of melody in what can be heard (“Distance” probably has the most overt display here), which balances the more abrasive nature of the music.

Sterilize is a solid album that reinforces Unsane’s sound. Cold, abrasive and intense, it is as relentless as they’ve always been. There’s few, if any missteps to be found on this driving, pummeling album. It is worth a listen.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 322: Cover your Mouth, don’t Sneeze on People

I’ve just been working on my bike so now I’m all fired up!

Roar and so on.

People in public… well, some people in public…

Uhh…

There are some people in public who need to learn some basic decency.

A friend of mine was on the bus and there was a person behind them.

The person behind them sneezed onto my friend because they were too busy holding their phone with both of their hands.

Now I know that it is difficult to cover your face when you sneeze, especially when you’re doing something as important as showing a complete disregard for not being an asshole by holding onto your phone when you sneeze. After all, holding a phone is an incredibly difficult task that only a few of us can master, but when you sneeze you do your best to stop it from going everywhere instead of ignoring a process that should be considered a basic obligation.

No one wants to get sick because some wonderful human being decided that whatever was on their screen was so important that they needed both of their hands to hold their phone.

People also do not want to get sick because other people decide that when they cough it is better to cough without covering their mouth with some sort of fabric, which is something that I have seen far too often.

I don’t care if you think that stopping the material that comes from your mouth is too difficult a task. Learn.

Basic hygiene is not a hard thing to learn.
It falls under basic etiquette.

You sneeze, don’t sneeze onto someone because you decide to be a selfish asshole by gripping your phone with both hands. Cover your nose if you can, or apologise.

You cough, don’t cough into the air because you’re too much of a selfish asshole to decide to cover your mouth because you think you’re above all of that. Cover your damn mouth.

I don’t think people forgetting is much of an excuse. If you forget something that basic, memorise the process until it becomes some sort of muscle memory.

I don’t understand why people think it is absolutely okay to forget to do these things.

I imagine that these are also the kinds of people that have the audacity to complain about people going in public and spreading illness.

Here’s an idea: maybe you’re contributing.

All I want to do is get to and from work on a work day without having to worry about getting sick because some idiot decided to be an extra special idiot in some particular moment in time that may end up having a detrimental impact to my ability to work.

I am sure that my friend feels the same way.

If you are so sick that you cannot stop yourself from sneezing or coughing, then perhaps you should either remain out of public until you get better, or take a cab to wherever it is that you are going.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:05:91

Slower than other recent posts but also much more cohesive, kind of.

A bit too much repetition.

I was really stretching this one.

Afternoon Tide

Whilst wandering around Huskisson Beach during the first day of the marine science field trip I came across a small creek.

Here we can see a small gathering of rock oysters in the creek.

I think the tide was rising, but I’m not sure. I didn’t stay long enough to see.

Perhaps it was low tide.

Actually, I think it was low tide as when I had to collect samples during the field trip it was noted that the tide was low and this was taken before that happened.

I like the way that the water frames the shot, as well as how the oysters cut their shape out among everything.

So much of the image appears smooth and then the oysters are there, jagged in their appearance.

I hope you enjoy.

Urban Industry

This is another photo that was taken from Sublime Point Lookout.

I could see some smoke so smoke was what I decided to take a photo of it if I could.

I managed to capture a few different types of urban areas.

Obviously there’s the industrial and residential, but there’s also a fair bit of recreational urban area in the shot.

I like the lighthouse on the bit of land jutting out sitting there, tall and solitary.

I think that the way that the land and ocean take up space in this photo works really well, seeming to contrast nature and urban whilst almost complimenting each other that the same time.

I hope you enjoy.

Wasp Island

As viewed from somewhere at Wasp Head.

I like how the details in this photo really come through from how the light and colour is balanced.

The island is in the distance out of reach and yet it seems quite close.

I also like how the waves appear in this photo, forming a pattern across the water.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 321: Greasy Hands of Unjust Justice

Why does my face feel like it is going to melt off today, if a small gust of wind comes along to carry it away from where it rightfully belongs?

Well, my face does not feel that way, but let us assume that it does.

I then have to ask as to why it does feel that way?

What are the motivations of my face?

What is it trying to achieve?

Is it trying to achieve anything?

Why am I here, sitting down on a seat, wearing a Hawaiian shirt?

Why am I asking questions that have either an answer, or no answer that I care to discover?

That is a good question.

Is it?

Perhaps.

I do know that I am here and not there, unless there is here and here is merely describing there in this moment, although that is unlikely to be the case, unless it is in which case there is a word describing a location that is named after a word used for some sort of indication that I can’t quite figure out right now because I am here and not there, as opposed to there and not here unless here is there and there is here and where I am is where I am not except for certain times of the day in which I habit here and there at separate locations at the same time due to the way that some things seem to work and some other things do not seem to work.

Perhaps work is working its way to work in some sort of wordplay that doesn’t make too much sense unless you view it from a certain angle, meaning that the words will need to be given more than two dimensions to inhabit which will then allow them to be viewed from another angle, although even in two dimensions I imagine that at certain other angles they will be able to be witnessed because of some thing that allows some other thing to happen in some manner that I cannot be bothered to think of right now.

There is a cockatoo and a tiger on my shirt.

Actually, I think that there are a few. However, they only inhabit two dimensions, as opposed to three or more, for they are not either a cockatoo or a tiger but merely a representation through the medium of image of a cockatoo and a tiger respectively, as opposed to the other way as these creatures do not look like each other very much, aside from the fact that they have eyes and are mobile unless they are images, unless they are moving images which are usually seen in the medium of film or television.

Perhaps I am thinking about  this far too much and should get back to doing things that are more relevant, such as buttering myself up and getting ready to seize the day with greasy hands of unjust justice, because that seems like a more sensible endeavor in this moment.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:30:72

Some of this manages to make sense.

Some of it is really bad.

What a cacophony.

Written at work.

Bent Bare Branches

Here’s another shot taken at Jamberoo Lookout.

There’s a lot of things that I like about the Australian bushland.

One of the things I like is how dry it can look at times.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
