At the Step

Another photo of these two swans (previous ones here).

I like this photo but I’m not sure I can explain as to why.
I think it has to do with the colour balance and the simplicity of the scene, but it might also have to do with how the rain affect’s the pond’s surface.

This is my submission into the one hundred-and-ninety-first Lens-Artists Photo Challenge.

The theme for this one is “Curves“.

I think this photo counts for the challenge due to the curve in the adult swan’s neck, as well as the curves from the ripples caused by rainfall.

The host of the Lens-Artists challenges cycles weekly between the following people:

Week 1 – Patti

Week 2 – Ann-Christine aka Leya

Week 3 – Amy

Week 4 – Tina

This year three people are joining the Lens-Artists team:

John Steiner of Journeys with Johnbo

Sofia Alves of  Photographias

Anne Sandler of Slow Shutter Speed

As such the above hosting order is likely to change.

This one is curated by Leya. The next one is curated by Amy.

I recommend participating in the challenges. They’re enjoyable and allow room for interpretation of the theme without straying too far. If you don’t participate, then I recommend that you at least check out what others of the Lens-Artists community are submitting.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1087: Pointless Pressure

Need to really stop putting pressure on myself to get these things written as it does not help with the thinking through of things.

Wait.

Need to really stop putting myself under pressure by waiting until the last minute to get these written. Does not help with the thinking as what I’m thinking about is how I need to get this written and how there is not enough time for me to get the writing done. Oh well. Such is life and all of that other stuff.

Sitting here, thinking about the music that is coming out of the speakers and thinking about today is a short day. It is a short day and I’m here and I get to experience it in all of its existence. I get to experience being here and present and I get to think about things. I think about obligations and I think about other things too.

I am already struggling. Putting this in the last half of a break was not a good idea. It was a bad idea, some might say. My writing is all over the place and I’m not gliding in the way I want to be gliding.

I could be writing about ideas. I could be writing about concepts. I could be expressing things related to the environment. I could be discussing marine science. Instead I am once more writing about writing, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it is when you’ve written the same thing over and over and you’re tired of the subject.

Maybe all writing is writing about writing.

Anyway, I sit here. Music. Stuff. All those other things. Lock myself into a circular state of procrastination. There’s a door there and I can step through, but for some reason instead of doing so I choose not to. I choose to lie prone on the floor and let the room keep on rotating in a slow manner. It does not help anything but at least it keeps me in a realm of familiarity. It is a bad realm of familiarity as it does not allow for growth, but I stay here and I refuse to open the door.

I should open that door. I should step through and look outside and embrace what is there. I need to move away form this subject, but the ground, despite its hard and cold surface, remains comfortable by way of knowing this particular bit of ground. However, what I know is only surface as there is the possibility of digging through, but I refuse to do that too.

I could either dig or I could open the door. At this stage opening the door is probably the better option., but the options are there. I could discuss the options, but I’d rather not and just get on with getting up and getting out. I feel that that is a more productive use of my time, and probably a necessary use. Therefore, that is what I will do. Maybe.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:21:16

This one I’m a little more fine with than some others as it went somewhere.
That said, usual it could’ve been better, too much repetition, bit of a mess…

VIQ: Vestige

One listen for this one.

Had to restart early as I was distracted and technically I finished the writing after another song started. Such is the way of things sometimes.

I tried to talk less about what the music was doing and focus on the imagery. The song is alright; it’s nothing special and relies a little too much on coolness and stating what one should feel which leads to it feeling superficial and manipulative, but it’s alright. It’s enjoyable for what it is. However, some of that and some of that criticism seeped in here, I think.

VIQ’s “Vestige” is from Crystal Shores.

I hope you enjoy.

Something slowly shimmering fades into view as the horizon reveals the path ahead and around. A strike of something deep and sounds form shapes of a view rich with some sort of seriousness.

Suddenly the beat bursts on in as movement forward continues on through a shapeless, yet entirely formed landscape. Space between strikes as the idea of emotion is pushed forward through the forcefulness of the sounds. Tone and texture comes into play just before the sounds pull back and allow some space that allows something akin to a guitar to shine.

The beat returns and an emotional manipulation suggesting comfort among a sadness comes forward among a soundscape that proceeds slow and steady. Staring forward determination leads through the landscape and all wakes up form a lengthy night. The sun rises somewhere behind, but there’s no time to look back for all the coolness that needs to be handled is here and there’s no turning back.

However, even through all this there needs to be an end and so all fades out, leaving a few notes to ring on out, suggesting something cool and lingering, and maybe a continuation elsewhere, if that is necessary, as it is here that the song ends.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1086: Tired Rambling

It would probably help if I had the keyboard in front of me when I started writing, but I didn’t, but now I do and now seeing as I do, I can go on my lengthy tangent and lead to nowhere.

There is a nice light filtering through outside. There are some clouds, but the light of the sunset is nice and what with it being nice and all, it makes me think that I should go for a walk. However, today is a day of rest as there needs to be rest.

Nighttime gradually approaches and its approach is unstoppable. It advances upon us and we have no choice but to accept its embrace, for it will be here soon and it will envelope all within its body and that will be that. There will be no changing of this. I can switch on all the lights that I have, but I cannot drive away the dark.

The night will sit here and it will be here for as long as it sees as necessary. It will keep on moving and it will move through many things and it will move over many things and eventually it will pass, and once more daylight will return. It will keep on going on like this and then… well, yeah.

I need to rest. Trying to write on very little sleep is not a good idea and it’s not something that I want to keep on doing. I may have done it this time and I may have done it many times in the past. I am likely to do it again, but I need to categorically state that writing with little sleep is not fun.

It’s also not fun when you’re feeling drained, but that’s another story for no other time.
This feels like a struggle and it is, but I’m getting through it. I’m getting to the end of what it is that I am trying to write at this present time, which is more just an expression of the relaxed feeling of the light outside and the day inside, but it doesn’t really feel relaxed. It feels like something I’m experiencing and going through, and it feels like something that will eventually pass, but I don’t want to quite express that as there are other things worth expressing in this present moment.

There is a world very much alive outside and it is one of beauty and prettiness, and there is a part of that world in here and I do like that it is in here also. I like that I’m sitting here, but I need to go out there more often as I’ve spent far too much of my time sitting down and doing nothing, and so I need to get back into action. I need to get back to doing things, and maybe this thing counts as doing things.

Then again, I should just spend more time outside but I’m not and now I’m repeating myself.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:32:04

I’m not sure as to what it was that I was going for with this one, but I don’t think I quite got there, if I am to be honest.

Austin Wintory: Apotheosis

One listen for this one.

I started talki0ng more about the song as it was happening and realised that that was not something that I wanted to do so I switched gear. As such, this is uneven in a few ways, but that’s not different from usual.

Austin Wintory’s “Apotheosis” is from Journey, the soundtrack for Journey.

I hope you enjoy.

A low hum moves onward and slowly finds itself joined by other sounds. Strings move a little about and they too draw long, though with more movement. A slight flourish of sound, though calm and weighted before it starts to fade out.

A strum signifies a rush and a build of tension. There is a building to something dramatic and dire, but it too finds a stop before things become too much.

Strings seem to form a base upon which other sounds seem to lift up from. They lift repeatedly as the strings move with a sense of urgency and slow a space fills with a gentleness. There seems to be a sense of a movement toward something. There is a building up. There is an accompaniment and there is a reflection upon things that have come and maybe things that may be, but what matters most is the moment.

Sounds build up and reinforce and look toward where to go next. They rise and push on forward and move into something bright. A catharsis gradually approaches as motion joins emotion in an upwelling. Determination comes forward as the need to push on forward supersedes all and suddenly there is a freedom that stretches out and onward. Suddenly no longer bound and a destination is pushed toward.

Floating along as the sounds pull back and a landing is found. The destination lies ahead and a drone stretches outward. Percussive sounds ring and build and tone pushes a discovery that remains unknown. Almost a pause and a lone string plays out, calling, searching in an emptiness. A percussive sound rings out and stretches and forms a base as the string moves on, searching, looking for something at the journey’s end and it’s all there, but it is not known.

Slight appearances of what was fade in and out of view as the string sounds its last at the song’s end.

Port Under Clouds

This was taken on the same day as these two photos.

I was trying to capture a sense of smallness with this one, as this port area, whilst large, is dwarfed by the clouds. I think I got it, but I don’t think the light on the clouds came through as well as it should have… maybe.

This is my submission into Leanne Cole‘s “Monochrome Madness” for this week.
I suggest checking out Leanne’s photography, as well as checking out what other people submit.

A lot of what people are submitting will likely end up here.

I hope you enjoy.

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1085: Sewage Idea

This morning I had what I thought was a great idea. Logistics aside, I feel this idea would be good both in terms of recycling, preventing waste from getting into the ocean and potentially creating demand for jobs.

Whilst going for a walk this morning I started thinking about how, if I had the money and my own house, I’d probably have a compost toilet built. They’re useful; they consume less resources in the long run and you end up with something you can use to fertilise plants. Slowly waste decomposes and turns into compost and you get the idea.

Now, why not apply this to sewage and waste in general?

I’m not sure as to how sewage disposal functions in other countries, but in Sydney we have a lot of it (possibly all of it, but I don’t know) pumped into the ocean. I believe that until recently a fair portion of said sewage left untreated before it entered the ocean.

Upon a bit of extra reading, it might not be a lot of Sydney’s sewage, but rather most of The Eastern Suburbs’ sewage, but I digress.

Now it is treated before it runs off into the ocean, but I feel that this is a massive waste of resources. It can still create issues for local habitats and, despite exists being positioned offshore, lead to beaches being nonviable to visit after heavy rainfall.

I don’t know what the costs would be and I don’t know how much remodeling would need to be done, but I feel that, if possible, it would be a good idea to redesign how Sydney’s sewage travels.

It would need to be rerouted to somewhere else. Some other type of processing plant where a lot of the plastics and rubbish are removed and then recycled (where possible). Any human waste then is turned into compost which then can go to being used for either habitat restoration (if necessary) as well as general fertiliser.

I understand that some people might have an issue with this, but that waste doesn’t just disappear. It has to go somewhere and it’s not meant to be pumped into the ocean. Removing the plastics and rubbish might take time and effort, but that would lead to a demand for people whop are willing to do that work. So would having a processing plant dedicated to the removal, as well as the processing of any waste into fertiliser.

Again, I don’t know how much this would cost to undertake. I don’t know what kind of redesign work would be required. However, I feel that it is a good idea. Less rubbish in the ocean and more readily available fertiliser. It could probably save a fair bit on protection and restoration efforts in the long run.

Anyway, this is just an idea I had and I thought I’d put it out there. Recycling where possible is great and if it means less stuff being pushed into the ocean, then it is worth considering.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 10:36:85

This I feel is one of my stronger bits of writing, if only due to my thinking about it before I started writing. That said, as a start to thinking more about it and developing further, I feel this could’ve been expressed with fewer words.

Junya Nakano: Guadosalam

One listen for this one.
However, there were a few pauses toward the end.
This was in part due to being a bit thrown off by this song not looping.

Normally when it comes to game soundtracks the song will loop before it ends.
I’m not sure as to why this is the norm as, in a listening situation, many tracks don’t warrant their looping. To be honest, I’m not sure if this one does, but it doesn’t have a loop and it works fine without.

I was looking to just write about the song. I was kind of hoping to venture into something more based around imagery, especially with how Junya Nakano’s (仲野順也) music usually flows and works with sound. Alas, tonight it was not to be.

Junya Nakano’s “Guadosalam” (“グアドサラム”) is from Final Fantasy X Original Soundtrack, the soundtrack for Final Fantasy X. The soundtrack was composed by Nakano, Masashi Hamauzu (浜渦 正志) and Nobuo Uematsu (植松 伸夫).

I hope you enjoy.

A low, percussive series of sounds rings low and makes out a pattern. Some extra percussive sound joins in and its echoing rhythm provides a counter to form structure. Something else stretches out around the percussion, humming and hovering.

A sense of mystery and gentleness comes forward on a brief woodwind before something seems to flutter about. The woodwind comes in, higher and riding a soft air. Suddenly voices rise on up in a gentle chorus, as do other sounds. There is a sense of filling out that comes forward in the exploring of a scenery that seems as distant as it does close. The woodwind rides the choral vocals and continues its ascension, but instead of moving into the grandiose, it and the other sounds pull back and allow themselves to fully relax once more.

Soon it all fades and the song ends.

A Poem About More Procrastination

This one is pretty obvious.
I kind of took my time, but I didn’t spend much time thinking about what I was writing, if that makes sense.
It gets the point across but it’s pretty bland.

I hope you enjoy.

For too long I stared
Into a long and winding distance
I would tell myself
I could stop at any time

I kept on driving forward
Prepared to pull over at any time
However, the view remained the same
For I was standing still

Too many days have passed
And given way to nights
Nights have given way to days
Whilst I’ve remained still

I think about the distance ahead
And how it does not change
I could drive ahead at any time
So I will do so now

Five-Hundred Word Challenge 1084: Sleep Deluding

It is afternoon and I’ve had all day to start on things, but now is a time to start and so I start now. Should’ve done so earlier, but lost time is not something that can be made up for and so I’m just going to keep on going and see what happens now.

Humidity feels like it should be in the air, but it is not and so today is an odd day. It is like many other days, but it is odd. It feels shaped by something beyond my reach, but then again, most days are, so I don’t know as to what I’m going on about here and instead of continuing the thread I shall drop it and move toward something else and hope that it leads to something greater than whatever it is that I am going on about.

I think I need to have a bit of a rest. I need to lie down and fall asleep and let my dreams take over and guide the narrative to whatever place they will guide to. There will be adventure, but then there may be no adventure whatsoever. There may be nothing at all. There may be no dreaming to speak of and that could be a fine thing, but the hope is that there are dreams of the deep variety and I want to be held within those dreams. I want to be held by the dreams and I want them to lead to something. I don’t know what that something would be, but I do know that I would want it to be something that is comforting and relieving of a lack of sleep, as, whilst I have had sleep, I feel a lack of it.

I feel that sleep has left me and really, all that I am doing is closing my eyes for a while and somehow that provides the illusion of rest. In feeling that illusion I can delude myself for a little while. It is not a long while, but often it is enough to get through the day.

Maybe this is how everyone goes about thing. No one person is getting enough sleep and we just delude ourselves into believing that we do get enough. Maybe that is how everyone operates and I’ve never known this and all of this theorising has finally allowed me to get to this point in my life. I finally have uncovered the truth and in doing that I can now move forward and find a way to make sure that everyone is getting enough sleep to be able to function and be healthy.

Now, there is a lot of work in taking on such a thing, but it’s something that must be done and so I think I can get it done. However, I need to deal with this entering a state of being able to dream for a while first as that will guide me to the answers that will lead to success.

The time it took to write five-hundred words: 05:03:50

This feels like it went somewhere and I think that is a good thing.
However, it took a while to start.
